Ubisoft unceremoniously cancels 6 games including Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake

22 janvier 2026 à 11:00

Throughout 2025 we saw an increasing number of leaks and rumours surrounding Ubisoft’s long-awaited Prince of Persia The Sands of Time Remake, with recent reports claiming that the title is scheduled to launch as early as this month. While this may have been the case at one point, Ubisoft have now announced “a major organizational, operational and portfolio reset” which includes the cancellation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake and 5 other projects.

Making the surprise announcement via a press release, Ubisoft unveiled the details of their “major organizational, operational and portfolio reset” designed “to reclaim creative leadership and restore sustainable growth.”

While there is of course plenty to dig into with this press release (including details on the publisher’s “accelerated investments behind player-facing Generative AI”) by far the most surprising part of the announcement was the fact that half a dozen in-development projects have now been cancelled as a result of this restructure, with them writing:

Prince of Persia Sands of Time

“Ubisoft has discontinued 6 games that do not meet the new enhanced quality as well as more selective portfolio prioritization criteria at Group level. These include Prince of Persia The Sands of Time remake as well as 4 unannounced titles, including 3 new IP’s, and a mobile title.”

As mentioned, many were expecting Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake to be released this month, with various leaks and rumours late last year indicating as much. Additionally, just last week the ESRB published a listing for the game alongside an official content rating; suggesting that its release was indeed imminent.

Given the fact that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake was delayed multiple times, changed studios and rebooted in order to ensure a quality product, the news of its sudden and unexpected cancellation is highly disappointing to see.

Far Cry 3 60FPS update officially announced

19 janvier 2026 à 13:00

Ubisoft has been one of the better publishers when it comes to updating their back-catalogue of games for current-gen hardware, with multiple Assassin’s Creed titles; Far Cry entries and most recently The Division 1 all getting 60fps patches on PS5 and Series X|S. Following a variety of teasers over the past few weeks, the team at Ubisoft have now confirmed that Far Cry 3 is getting a 60fps patch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Officially arriving in just a few days on the 21st of January, Far Cry 3 Classic Edition is set to receive a free 60fps update on current-gen consoles.

While certainly a welcome addition, it appears as though the update is not making any other changes to the game, meaning it remains at the PS4 Pro / Xbox One X resolution of 1440p with TAA – and will not allow you to alter your player field-of-view.

Regardless, having a 60fps update is welcome nonetheless and will allow those on consoles to experience (or re-experience) this classic in a slightly improved form.

In case you missed it, Ubisoft also recently teased that both Far Cry 3’s standalone DLC ‘Blood Dragon’ and the spin-off ‘Primal’ will also receive 60fps updates. We likely won’t have to wait long for those to also be officially confirmed.

Division series boss Julian Gerighty departs Ubisoft to lead EA’s Battlefield Studios

17 janvier 2026 à 13:00

Julian Gerighty, the creative director and executive producer of Tom Clancy's The Division franchise, has officially resigned from Ubisoft to join Electronic Arts' Battlefield Studios. Massive Entertainment confirmed the news this week, marking the end of Gerighty's extensive tenure at the studio, where he was a key figure shaping the first two Division games and leading the creative direction for Star Wars Outlaws.

While Gerighty recently teased that The Division 3 was “shaping up to be a monster”, his departure means he will no longer be at the helm to see the project through to its completion. Instead, he will transition to a leadership role within EA's Battlefield team, though his specific title has not yet been confirmed. Ubisoft's leadership has moved quickly to reassure fans and investors that the series remains in capable hands. The publisher emphasised that the vision for the franchise remains unchanged despite the loss of its primary creative face. Massive Entertainment's statement on the topic can be found below:

Gerighty himself also shared a message to the community on X, expressing confidence in the franchise's future and noting that it was simply time for “another grand adventure” after over 27 years at the company.

This move comes at a juncture for both gaming giants. Ubisoft has been grappling with a prolonged slump that led to its stock being temporarily halted on Euronext in late 2025. While Assassin's Creed Shadows provided a much-needed commercial boost last year, the group has faced significant layoffs and studio closures as part of a major internal restructuring. On the other side of the industry, EA's Battlefield Studios is still navigating the tragic loss of Vince Zampella, who passed away following a car accident in December 2025. Bringing in a veteran with Gerighty's expertise could be just what EA needs as it looks to expand the Battlefield franchise and fill the leadership gap left by one of the industry's most influential figures.

KitGuru says: Losing Julian Gerighty is a heavy blow for Ubisoft. However, for EA and the Battlefield franchise, this could be a massive win. Gerighty's experience with shooters and large-scale IP management is precisely what EA needs to maintain the momentum of the successful Battlefield 6.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has been rated by the ESRB

15 janvier 2026 à 12:00

Throughout 2025 we saw an increasing number of leaks and rumours surrounding Ubisoft’s long-awaited Prince of Persia The Sands of Time Remake, with recent reports claiming that the title is scheduled to launch as early as this month. While Ubisoft have yet to officially let the cat out of the bag, the ESRB has now published a rating for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake – indicating an imminent unveiling.

Ahead of the leaked launch date for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake (which is purportedly planned to arrive some time this month), the Entertainment Software Ratings Board [ESRB] has published an official listing for the long-awaited remake.

With a T for Teen rating, the Sands of Time Remake is said to include “Blood, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, and Violence”. While we did not get too much in the way of gameplay details, the summary does feature a section which confirms that the game will include 2D side-scrolling elements – to some degree at least.

Though wholly expected, the remake is also confirmed to include puzzles, platforming challenges and a plethora of traps (including spike pits, wall-mounted blades and saws).

Despite being announced all the way back in 2020, we know very little about the Sands of Time Remake – especially in the wake of its development reboot. As such, it will be interesting to officially learn all about the project, likely in the coming days.
