Long-throw trend prompts Ifab to consider time limit for taking throw-ins

Football’s lawmakers are considering taking action against the most fashionable trend in the game: long throws.

The International Football Association Board (Ifab) has discussed the possibility of limiting how long a player can spend on a throw-in, in a bid to increase the amount of time the ball is in play during a match.

Fifa joins with trade union to promote ‘safe working conditions’

Fifa has announced new measures for promoting “decent and safe working conditions” at its tournaments after agreeing a five-year partnership with the Building and Wood Workers’ International trade union.

The BWI, which has been critical of Fifa’s decision to award the 2034 World Cup finals tournament to Saudi Arabia, will now partner with world football’s governing body on conducting labour inspections in the Gulf state and elsewhere. The agreement will also incorporate training for workers and their representatives, and the creation of a “time-bound corrective action plan” that will ensure remedy for those workers who are exploited or otherwise impacted in their jobs.

La Liga announces cancellation of Villarreal-Barcelona match’s move to Miami

La Liga has announced it will no longer stage Villarreal v Barcelona in Miami this December, blaming “uncertainty” caused by the critical response to the plans in Spain.

The Spanish top flight had set great store in staging some of its fixtures abroad and bemoaned its inability to follow through with the plans in a lengthy statement released on Tuesday night.

Starmer condemns ‘wrong decision’ to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from Aston Villa game

  • Europa League match is classified ‘high risk’ by police

Fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv will not be allowed to attend the Europa League match at Aston Villa on 6 November owing to safety concerns.

West Midlands police said it had classified the fixture as “high risk” based on “current intelligence and previous incidents, ­including ­violent clashes and hate crime offences that occurred during the 2024 Uefa Europa League match between Ajax and ­Maccabi Tel Aviv in Amsterdam”.
