Trump backs down on sending federal troops to San Francisco for immigration crackdown

Protesters flood streets in show of resistance, as president calls off deployment after speaking with city’s mayor and Silicon Valley leaders

Donald Trump canceled plans for a deployment of federal troops to San Francisco that had sparked widespread condemnation from California leaders and sent protesters flooding into the streets.

The Bay Area region had been on edge after reports emerged on Wednesday that the Trump administration was poised to send more than 100 Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and other federal agents to the US Coast Guard base in Alameda, a city in the East Bay, as part of a large-scale immigration-enforcement plan. By early Thursday morning, hundreds of protesters had gathered outside the Coast Guard base, holding signs with slogans such as “No ICE or Troops in the Bay!”.

LA TikTok creator streaming ICE raids charged with assault after being shot

Carlitos Ricardo Parias remained hospitalized after he was shot in the elbow by federal agents during arrest

An influential Los Angeles man who livestreams US immigration enforcement operations on social media remained hospitalized on Wednesday after he was shot and arrested by federal agents.

Authorities allege that Carlitos Ricardo Parias, a TikTok creator with a large following online, tried to ram federal agents’ vehicles with his vehicle in an attempt to flee after agents surrounded him and boxed in his car. He was shot in the elbow during the incident while a ricochet bullet hit a deputy US marshal in the hand.

Los Angeles agrees to pay $828m to settle more sexual abuse claims

Deal comes after county in April agreed to pay $4bn to settle historical claims – largest such settlement in US history

Six months after approving the largest sexual abuse settlement in US history, officials in Los Angeles announced the county tentatively agreed to pay another huge sum, nearly $1bn, to settle more than 400 additional claims against county employees.

In April, Los Angeles county approved a historic $4bn settlement with about 11,000 claimants and allegations of sexual abuse in LA juvenile facilities that dated back decades. On Friday, the county said it had reached another major settlement for $828m, pending approval by the board of supervisors, the county governing body, and the county claims board.

Alaska governor asks Trump for federal aid after typhoon displaces 1,500 people

Lawmakers urge president to allow for repair of housing and utilities after Typhoon Halong devastates villages

Mike Dunleavy, the governor of Alaska, has asked Donald Trump to declare a major disaster after a powerful storm devastated villages in the state’s south-west, displacing 1,500 people and prompting large-scale air evacuations.

The state’s senators and congressman urged the president to approve the declaration to allow additional federal resources into the region to repair housing and utilities before winter. The scale of the disaster has surpassed the state’s ability to respond, Senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, and Nick Begich, the Alaska congressman, wrote.

Major airlift evacuations in Alaska after remnants of typhoon decimate villages

Weekend storm devastated two villages and displaced more than 1,500 people in the south-western part of the state

Authorities in Alaska are staging a major evacuation operation, relocating hundreds of people in one of the “most significant” airlifts in the state’s history, after a storm decimated two villages along the south-west coast over the weekend.

More than 1,500 people were displaced after the remnants of Typhoon Halong hit remote communities in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, battering the area with fierce winds, rain and record-breaking storm surge that caused some homes to float off their foundations.

Gavin Newsom again denies parole for Manson follower Patricia Krenwinkel

California governor blocks 77-year-old’s parole for second time, saying she ‘poses an unreasonable danger to society’

Gavin Newsom this week again denied parole for Patricia Krenwinkel, who has spent more than half a century in prison for her role in the 1969 Tate-LaBianca killings orchestrated by Charles Manson and perpetrated by his followers.

Nearly five months after California’s parole board found the 77-year-old suitable for release, the governor on Monday reversed the decisionand said Krenwinkel “currently poses an unreasonable danger to society if released from prison at this time’”.

At least one person was killed and two were missing after weekend storm battered two Alaska Native communities

The Alaskan coast was bracing for more rain and wind on Wednesday after a devastating storm decimated two small native villages, killing at least one person and and displacing more than 1,500 people.

Over the weekend, the remnants of Typhoon Halong hit remote communities in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, in the south-western part of the state, bringing fierce winds, rain and record-breaking storm surge that caused some homes to float away.
