Hochul, Schumer and the three mayoral candidates express outrage over federal operation in Chinatown

Local and state officials in New York are expressing outrage after dozens of federal agents carried out a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) raid in Manhattan’s Chinatown on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses accounts and video footage captured the chaotic scenes in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon, where masked and armed federal agents were seen detaining several individuals near Canal Street, while crowds of New Yorkers gathered, protesting against the action. Military-style vehicles were also seen driving through the area.

January 6 US Capitol rioter arrested for alleged threat to kill Hakeem Jeffries

Christopher Moynihan, pardoned by Trump for his role in Capitol attack, allegedly threatened House minority leader

A man who was pardoned by Donald Trump for his conviction in the US Capitol attack carried out by the Republican president’s supporters in early 2021 has been arrested for allegedly threatening to kill the Democratic House minority leader, Hakeem Jeffries, according to authorities and the New York representative himself.

Christopher Moynihan, 34, was arrested by New York state police on a felony count of making terroristic threats, the agency announced.

Trump administration asks supreme court to allow deployment of national guard in Chicago area – US politics live

The move would escalate President Donald Trump’s conflict with Democratic governors over using the military on US soil

The US Senate failed on Thursday to re-open the government and to vote to fund the military during the federal government shutdown, ensuring that the standoff will stretch into next week.

The Senate vote on a short-term Republican funding bill failed for the 10th time with just 51 votes. A second vote on Pentagon funding in the afternoon similarly failed in a floor vote, meaning the process to begin fully funding military operations also becomes a non-starter. After the votes, senators are expected to leave Washington for the weekend, almost guaranteeing the shutdown lasts until at least Monday.

Mamdani, Cuomo and Sliwa spar in New York mayoral debate

The Democratic nominee and the former governor of New York clashed repeatedly, while Sliwa criticized them both

New York City’s three mayoral candidates faced off on Thursday night in the first of two televised debates, less than three weeks before voters head to the polls.

On stage were Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, former governor Andrew Cuomo – now running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani in June – and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Mayor Eric Adams, who dropped out of the race several weeks ago, did not participate.
