Following its surprise release last week, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has seemingly only benefited from its Shadow-drop strategy, seeing well over 200,000 concurrent players on Steam alone. Being available on PlayStation for the first time ever, the game is performing extremely well on the platform – currently sitting as the 3rd-biggest launch of the year so far.

As reported by the PlayStation-focused publication TrueTrophies, Oblivion Remastered has so far been a huge hit on PS5.

Based on data from both TrueTrophies and GameTrends, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has managed to have the 3rd biggest launch week for any game in 2025 – landing behind Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Monster Hunter Wilds. In fact, according to the report, Oblivion was just 4.7% shy from taking Shadows’ 2nd spot.

Of course, given its surprise release, Oblivion was unlikely to outpace Monster Hunter Wilds – especially as the latter sold 8 million copies in its first 72 hours. That said, landing at 3rd place is highly respectable, especially as the game had little to no official marketing leading up to its release.

It will be interesting to see how Oblivion (among others) continue to perform over the coming months – and whether the impending GTA VI will suck all the air out of the industry upon its release.

Infinity Nikki is a cute “cozy” free-to-play open world platformer which offers a focus on puzzles and fashion, letting you collect and utilise a ton of different ‘magical Ability Outfits’. Released at the tail-end of last year for PS5, mobile and the Epic Games Store, Infinity Nikki has now officially launched on Steam.

Released in alignment with the game’s 1.5 update, Infinity Nikki is available to add to your library for free right now on Steam. As mentioned, the game was technically playable on PC since December of last year, however it was exclusive to the Epic Games Store at the time.

Six months on and the exclusivity period seems to have ended, just in time for update 1.5 – which is said to bring with it:

• New Limited Time Events
• New Storyline
• Multiple new areas and quests
• Additional Gameplay features
• Co-op
• Additional customisation
• And more

Last year, Microsoft released Indiana Jones and the Great Circle for Xbox and PC. While the game was celebrated at the time, it failed to reach the peak of the sales charts. Interestingly, with the game now available on PS5, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has managed to top the weekly sales charts for the first time.

As reported by industry analyst Matt Piscatella of Circana via BlueSky, “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was the best-selling video game in the US during week ending April 19th, following its PS5 launch”. Adding further context, Piscatella continued, “It was the first time the title reached #1 on the weekly charts.”

Of course, this is not to say that the game failed during its initial launch, with Microsoft confirming earlier this year that the game has exceeded 4 million players.

It’s worth noting that being a first-party Xbox game, Indiana Jones was available day-one on Game Pass PC / Ultimate, likely impacting its placement on the Circana charts (due to its use of Dollar sales as the metric for calculations).

Even so, it is interesting to see Microsoft’s first-party Xbox titles in some ways perform better on PlayStation than their own system. That said, more sales for Indiana Jones is a win for Microsoft, no matter the platform of choice.

It will be interesting to see how Forza Horizon 5 performs on PS5 when it launches soon.

Late last year, PC platform holder GOG announced that they were setting up a new game preservation program. In the months since, the initiative has seen a consistent influx of games being preserved for generations to come. Ahead of this year’s Star Wars Day, the team announced around half a dozen titles set to be preserved for the future.

Making the announcement on their blog, the team at GOG wrote: “With Star Wars Day approaching, we want to honor this amazing franchise in the best way we can: by adding iconic classics from a galaxy far, far away to the GOG Preservation Program! That’s right – while we kick off intergalactic celebrations with May the 4th sale, we also decided to put special attention into some of the most classic Star Wars games out there; those titles shaped who we are, and it’s about time to go back to them.”

Said to have been updated to “run as smoothly as possible on modern systems and are now made to live forever” the following games have now been added to GOG’s preservation program:

• STAR WARS Dark Forces
• STAR WARS: X-Wing Special Edition
• STAR WARS: TIE Fighter Special Edition
• STAR WARS Battlefront (Classic)
• Star Wars: Rebel Assault 1 + 2

In alignment with this announcement, all of the listed games are currently on sale for 75% off – and will remain so until the 6th of May.

For the uninitiated, the GOG preservation program expands on the platform’s already solid business practice of offering all their games DRM-free. These preserved titles in particular however have had extra care put into them to ensure long-term compatibility.

Star Wars Battlefront for example has had its stability validated; has added cloud save support and is now verified to work correctly on Windows 10/11.

As the video games industry evolves and matures, it is highly welcome to see at least one company doing what it can to ensure that video gaming remains as accessible and forward-facing as possible. Hopefully game preservation programs become a common practice.

Between the 3 major console makers, Microsoft’s Xbox controller is easily the most basic, lacking any form of advanced haptics, gyro-controls and the like. That said, it seems the company is testing out a number of next-gen controllers – including one which appears heavily inspired by the PS5’s DualSense.

Back in 2023 during Microsoft’s then-ongoing hearings with the FTC, the console maker accidentally leaked some of its future plans, including a next-gen controller which was said to feature new precision haptics, an accelerometer, improved build quality with quieter buttons and thumbsticks – and a lift-to-wake mechanic for better battery life.

Now, known insider Jez Corden has offered some updated details, including what appears to be multiple controllers in the works.

According to Corden, Microsoft currently has 3 different Xbox controllers in development. The first is said to be a 3rd version of the company’s Elite controller – bringing with it improved connectivity alongside advanced haptic feedback and adaptive triggers (like the PS5’s DualSense).

The other two controllers are perhaps even more interesting, with controller #2 said to feature an LED status bar (also similar to the PS4/5) alongside improved Bluetooth for better connectivity. Additionally, the controller will reportedly offer a Google Stadia-like direct connection to Xbox’s cloud services for minimal latency when streaming.

Last but not least, controller #3 is codenamed Sebile and is seemingly a blend of the two above accessories, featuring full haptics alongside support for direct cloud connection (as well as Bluetooth). That said, Sebile also includes an odd feature which is said to vibrate the controller in order to alert players of various issues such as connection quality.

Technologically, Xbox controllers have remained pretty much the same since the very first console. With both Sony and Nintendo lapping the Xbox multiple times over when it comes to controller tech, it is encouraging to see Microsoft finally trying to catch up.

Back in 2023, Bulletstorm developers People Can Fly announced that they were working on a game with Microsoft known as Project Maverick. Following this, the studio revealed that they are also assisting The Coalition with development on Gear of War: E-Day. Though not explicitly stated at the time, the team has now confirmed that Project Maverick was in fact Gear of War: E-Day.

People Can Fly recently updated the ‘About Us’ section on their website, offering new details on all their current ongoing projects. Though not confirmed to be the same project at the time, the team have now solidified the fact that their mysterious ‘Project Maverick’ was in fact the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day, writing:

“PCF Group S.A. is currently working on seven projects: Gemini, a new AAA game developed in partnership with global publisher Square Enix; Maverick (Gears of War: E-Day), in collaboration with Microsoft; Echo, a mode to the existing game developed for Krafton; and projects Bifrost and Victoria (Lost Rift) to be released in the self-publishing model.”

Of course, for our purposes the most notable reveal was the confirmation that Project Maverick is in fact Gears of War: E-Day (a fact which was assumed but not officially announced).

This is somewhat interesting however as Maverick was said to be an RPG of sorts – something which is not typically associated with the Gears franchise. Whether this was merely a matter of different definitions, or whether E-Day will offer more in the way of role-playing we will have to wait and see.

All that said, it is slightly disappointing to know that Project Maverick is not some brand new IP with a ton of inventive ideas. Hopefully E-Day proves to be more than just a simple sequel/prequel to Gears 5.

The Resident Evil series is by far Capcom’s biggest, with each entry selling millions upon millions of copies – especially in recent years. While fans eagerly await the announcement and subsequent release of Resident Evil 9, other titles in the franchise have continued to sell well, with multiple RE titles hitting record numbers.

Making the announcement via a blog post, the team at Capcom officially confirmed that 2023’s RE4 Remake has hit a new major milestone of over 10 million copies sold – officially making it one of Capcom’s best-selling games.

That said, other RE titles still have it beat, with 2019’s much-loved Resident Evil 2 Remake having now surpassed 15 million copies sold (matching that of RE7: Biohazard).

This marks both RE7 and RE2 Remake as the joint 3rd-best selling games of all time from Capcom, only being beaten by Monster Hunter Rise (16.7 million) and World (21.3 million) – and perhaps MH: Wilds.

Regardless, Resident Evil continues to prove itself as one of Capcom’s most important franchises. It will be interesting to see just how quickly RE9 sells when it inevitably releases.

With the Nintendo Switch 2 a little over a month away from release, many 3rd party developers have announced or expressed interest in bringing their previous titles to the console maker’s upcoming system. Interestingly, one game which may not come to Switch 2 is Diablo IV, with Blizzard claiming the platform to be “challenging” for live-service titles.

In a recent interview with Gamertag Radio, the Senior Vice President / General Manager for Diablo at Blizzard ‘Rod Fergusson’ was asked about the upcoming Switch 2 and their plans for the system.

With a rather interesting response, Fergusson had this to say: “I think there’s opportunity there for sure. I mean, we have Diablo III and Diablo II Resurrected is already on the Switch, and with back compat like it’ll be playable on Switch 2.”

He continued, “It's nice the Switch 2 has the performance that can run a game like Diablo 4, so yeah, it's something to look at for sure. I think the challenge is less around the hardware and just about how we… you know, live services on Switch have been a little bit challenging in the past.”

Offering some positivity on the matter, Fergusson concluded by stating “I'm hopeful that as they launch this June and as we look to the future, that becomes easier and easier, so it makes more sense to put a live service on that platform.”

As mentioned by Fergusson, both Diablo II and III are available on the OG Switch and so the idea that a live-service title can’t work on Nintendo’s sequel system is slightly odd. That said, it would be highly surprising if Diablo IV didn’t eventually make its way onto Switch 2. We will have to wait and see.

While Sony typically waits until the last Wednesday of the month to announce its upcoming PlayStation Plus Essential line-up, the console maker seems to have accidentally leaked one of May’s headlining titles – with the Until Dawn Remake seemingly set to be given away next month.

As discovered by Reddit user ‘Budget-Neat4750’ a select number of PlayStation users have had their PS Plus tab updated with a listing for the Until Dawn Remake as one of the available monthly games.

Of course, right now, the title is not actually available to claim, with April’s PS Plus line-up still set to be available until the 6th of May – those games being RoboCop Rogue City; Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Hacker's Memory and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Given this, it is highly likely that last year’s Until Dawn remake will be one of May’s headlining PlayStation Plus titles. This also lines up with the recent release of the Until Dawn film a couple days ago; making for a great synergistic release.

All that said, the Until Dawn Remake was a bit of a controversial release, with some fans arguing the original game to be superior. Since its launch last year however, the Remake has seen a number of updates, which at the very least helped with performance issues.

It will be interesting to see what the wider audience thinks of the game should it wind up being one of next month’s PS Plus titles.

Following a ton of leaks and rumours, the much-anticipated Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered was finally shadow-dropped to a great deal of interest, seeing a peak concurrent player count on Steam of over 100,000 within hours of its launch. In alignment with the announcement that the remaster has surpassed 4 million total players, Oblivion managed to hit a new peak concurrent player count on Steam on Sunday.

Over the weekend, as some of the early launch day bugs were squashed and more people got the chance to hop into the game, TES IV: Oblivion Remastered managed to surpass its day-one concurrent player count on Steam.

While CCUs are a rather arbitrary metric (particularly for single player games) it is still worthy of note, especially in instances such as this, as Oblivion Remastered has now seen a new peak CCU of over 200,000 players – 216,784 to be specific.

Though not uncommon for a game to rise in popularity during the weekend period, it is interesting to consider whether Oblivion’s surprise ‘shadow drop’ launch has contributed to its continued rise in concurrent players as more people were made aware of its release.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see how the game continues to perform over time, and whether it has hit its peak, or if this is just the start.

Unfortunately, at the same time the company also removes games from the service on a monthly basis – with the likes of GTA V, InFamous Second Son and well over a dozen more titles departing PS Plus in May.

In going to the PlayStation Plus tab on your PS5, you’ll find a list of  titles under the ‘Last Chance to Play’ section. Leaving the service at some point in May are the following:

Given the fact that InFamous Second Son is a first-party PlayStation title developed by Sucker Punch Productions, its removal from the service makes little sense – especially as this marks the only version of the game available (meaning this isn’t being done in order to add a remastered SKU later on).

Beyond this, other notable titles leaving include the fun first-person open-zone platform shooter ‘Journey to the Savage Planet’; the surprisingly immersive VR title ‘The Walking Dead Saints & Sinners’ and last but not least the fun, fast-paced first-person parkour slasher ‘Ghostrunner’.

While April’s PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium line-up was one of its best in a while, hopefully Sony has some major plans for PS Plus next month in order to make up for the slew of titles leaving the service.

While predominantly seen as a console-focused studio, ATLUS announced back in 2021 that they wanted to bring more of their titles (past and future) to additional platforms. Since then, we’ve seen the likes of Persona 5, P3R, SMT V and more come to PC – to great success. In discussing last year’s Metaphor: ReFantazio, the team revealed that sales on the platform had “exceeded expectations.”

In an interview conducted by the Japanese publication 4Gamer (and translated by Automaton-Media), the director and creative producer for Metaphor: ReFantazio – Katsura Hashino – spoke on ATLUS’ shift towards simultaneous releases across multiple platforms, saying:

“Even as a developer, I believe that there is much merit in each player being able to enjoy the game in their preferred environment, and I’m glad that we were able to accomplish that.”

This new strategy seems to be paying off, with Hashino revealing that sales for Metaphor: ReFantazio on PC exceeded the team’s expectations. While we’ve not gotten any updated figures in quite some time, the game was confirmed to have been the biggest launch for ATLUS so far, selling over 1 million copies in its first day.

Considering that Metaphor: ReFantazio is a brand new IP, its success across the board is worthy of note – especially given its surprising popularity on PC. Hopefully this means all future ATLUS games will continue to release simultaneously across all platforms.

Well over a decade on from its launch, GTA V remains more relevant than ever, with the game selling over 210 million copies since 2013 and continuing to see a solid 100,000+ concurrent players on PC on the daily. Beyond players themselves, GTA V continues to be one of the most-viewed games in the world, with the title topping viewership charts for Twitch in 2024.

As reported by The Verge, Twitch has released an infographic showing off various stats for the biggest games on the platform in 2024. Having a 60% market share in global gaming live-streaming, Twitch remains by far the biggest platform for insights into the general gaming landscape in this regard.

With over 15 billion hours of gaming content viewed in 2024, many games were privy to their 15 minutes of fame. That said, one title reigned supreme, with GTA V taking up almost 10% of the entire year’s views with over 1.4 billion hours watched.

Second place meanwhile went to League of Legends (1.19 billion hours), followed by Valorant (804 million hours); Fortnite (539 million hours) and rounding up the top 5 was Call of Duty with 451 million hours watched in 2024.

While yes, GTA V is one of the biggest games of all time, its continued relevance on Twitch in particular is due in part to the ongoing popularity of the game’s roleplaying servers – a function which popped up independently of Rockstar/Take-Two’s own ambitions for the game.

With GTA VI set to release at some point later this year, it will be interesting to see how the game performs both in terms of sales, but also continued livestream viewership figures.

Given the fact that no PC release has been announced yet, GTA V’s RP servers will likely remain quite popular for the foreseeable future. It will be interesting to see how the two will compete in this regard.

With the Nintendo Switch set to launch in a couple months’ time, we have started to hear an increasing number of previously-released 3rd-party titles being announced for the sequel system. One launch-day game which new Switch 2 owners will be able to enjoy right from the get-go is last year’s Sonic x Shadow Generations.

Nintendo is slowly but surely collecting a solid list of games set to drop alongside the Switch 2 on the 5th of June. Amongst the likes of Cyberpunk 2077; Mario Kart World; Street Fighter 6 and more, SEGA has now officially confirmed that Sonic x Shadow Generations will also be available for Switch 2 on day-one.

For the uninitiated, Sonic x Shadow Generations is a remaster of the much-loved 2011 2D/3D platformer, featuring a ton of throwback levels, fun mechanics and plenty of replayability.

As expected, the remaster adds the titular Shadow the Hedgehog as part of his own Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury styled spin-off add-on.

While a remaster of a decade old game may not be the best way to showcase the power of Switch 2, Sonic x Shadows Generations is still a good get for the system.

Seemingly out of nowhere, Sony officially announced the release date for Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Yōtei alongside a brand new trailer. In alignment with the announcement, a number of interviews have been published in which the team discuss all aspects of the much-anticipated sequel including the open-world, combat and more.

With Ghost of Yōtei officially set to launch in just a few months on the 2nd of October, the team at Sucker Punch are finally beginning to speak more on the hotly-anticipated sequel to one of PlayStation’s biggest new IPs in recent years.

In an interview with Variety, Sucker Punch directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell sat down to discuss all manner of topics, including Ghost of Yōtei's points of focus as a sequel; the open world and much more.

In talking about the evolution of the weapons being used in Yōtei (some of which was shown off in the trailer), Nate Fox had this to say: “We have the benefit of gunpowder being part of the combat mix. While the Katana is still the most valuable weapon, having some more opportunities to blow things up is never a bad addition for a video game.”

Beyond this, the team have confirmed that Ghost of Yōtei will feature the kusarigama (chain-sickle); dual wielding swords; a yari (spear) and more – all of which are said to be organically implemented while featuring their own benefits.

One of the best aspects of Ghost of Tsushima was its combat and so in building on top of what was already there, Yōtei looks set to not only be a visually stunning time, but a mechanically fun one as well.

Late last year Sony pushed out an update to all PS5 users adding a bunch of themes based on the company’s prior consoles. Though a limited-time feature created solely to celebrate PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, reception towards the themes saw Sony promise to bring them back in an enhanced form later down the line. Finally, the day has arrived.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Shuzo Kikuchi – the VP of Product Management at SIE – wrote “We continue to work behind the scenes to bring new enhancements to the PS5 experience, and today we are excited to announce two key additions based on player feedback – audio focus and the return of the classic console designs for the PS5 UI.”

While the UI customisation is easily the more exciting of the two additions, the new Audio Focus mode is certainly worth checking out.

Upon enabling it, this new mode toggle is said to ‘increase immersion’ by “providing presets to amplify soft sounds to meet your hearing preferences, ensuring a clearer audio experience when using headphones or headsets.”

Of course the less useful (though more exciting) addition with this update is the return of the 30th anniversary PlayStation themes.

Now labelled as ‘Appearance and Sound’ this new settings sub-menu will let you pick between the visual and audio aesthetics of the PSOne, PS2, PS3 or PS4 – giving you just a hint of nostalgia no matter your generation of choice. Hopefully Sony chooses to expand this feature further over time.

Earlier this year we got our first taste of what might be an early game of the year contender in the form of Hazelight Studios’ Split fiction. Not to be outdone, new studio Sandfall Interactive’s hybrid turn-based RPG ‘Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’ has now snatched the crown for the highest rated game of 2025 so far.

With a Metacritic score of 92 and an OpenCritic rating of 91, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is officially the highest rated game of 2025 so far – taking the number 1 spot from Josef Fares and Hazelight Studios’ Split Fiction.

As mentioned, Sandfall Interactive is a brand new studio, with Clair Obscur representing their very first game. Despite this, the team seems to have stuck lightning right from the off, with praise being given to pretty much all aspects of the title – from its unique hybrid turn-based combat; to its visuals; voice acting; story and more.

For the uninitiated, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is described as “a ground-breaking turn-based RPG with unique real-time mechanics, making battles more immersive and addictive than ever” where you “explore a fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France in which you battle devastating enemies.”

The game is officially available from today for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

After many years of false starts, the film and TV industries seem to have figured out (for the most part) how to adapt a video game into other mediums. One publisher which has seen success is SEGA with their Sonic the Hedgehog series. It seems the company is looking to expand its film repertoire further, with Michael Bay now set to direct a film based on the 80s racing game OutRun.

As reported by the publication Deadline, following the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies by SEGA/Paramount and the ongoing box office dominance of WB’s A Minecraft Movie (among others), film distributor Universal Pictures is looking to get in on the action.

According to the report, Michael Bay (known for his work on Transformers) will direct a film based on SEGA’s classic racing IP OutRun.

Alongside Bay, Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria, Anyone But You) is joining the crew as a producer – with Jayson Rothwell tasked as scriptwriter.

While an undeniable classic, choosing to adapt OutRun in particular is interesting as the series is not known for its story chops. Of course, this does mean that Universal can do much more with the adaptation without impacting the lore of the games.

Still, whether there is any interest in an OutRun film, we will have to wait and see. At the very least, with Michael Bay set to direct, it will hopefully be an action-packed and visually stimulating time.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach marks one of the biggest PlayStation 5 console exclusives set to release in 2025. Ahead of its official launch this June, fans will get the chance to hear more from the game when the preview embargo is lifted early next month.

As confirmed by multiple different outlets, publications have been invited to Kojima Productions’ studio in Japan to try out Death Stranding 2: On the Beach ahead of its official release on the 26th of June.

Though little else has been shared for now, the outlets confirmed that previews for the upcoming sequel will go live on the 8th of May.

Of course, this is just the preview event, meaning full reviews won’t be out until much closer to its official release. Still, it is exciting to be getting a ton more information about Death Stranding 2 early next month.

While we have seen plenty from the game already, as is the case with Kojima titles, there is always much more than meets the eye – and so hopefully we’ll hear more about what separates DS2 from its predecessor in a couple weeks’ time.

Following the successful launch of Persona 3 Reload last year, we began to hear rumours that SEGA/ATLUS was working on a similar remake for Persona 4. Further evidence popped up in March when the domain name P4RE.JP was registered. Almost exactly a month later, the site has been updated – hinting at what could be an upcoming announcement.

Back on the 20th of March, Twitter user ScrambledFaz discovered a recent registration for the domain name P4RE.JP, indicating that the rumoured Persona 4 remake could be gearing up for a possible announcement.

Though nothing official has come to pass yet, fansite PersonaCentral has now reported that the domain has since been updated in a similar manner to the likes of Persona 3 Reload ahead of its official announcement.

In the many years since the initial launch of Persona 5, ATLUS/SEGA have released a ton of different titles and spin-offs, including Persona 5 Royal; Persona 3 Reload; Persona 4 Golden remaster; P5 Strikers; Tactica and Dancing in Starlight – to name a few.

Assuming they maintain their previous release strategies, then the rumoured Persona 4 remake could be coming out quite soon. We (hopefully) won’t have to wait long to find out.

Following months of leaks and rumours, the long-awaited and much anticipated Elder Scrolls Oblivion remaster/remake is finally here. Despite little to no official lead up to the game’s release, the title has proven to be an immediate hit – amassing well over 100,000 concurrent players in mere hours.

As of writing, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remastered has seen an immense number of players flock to the game in the immediacy following its official launch, with the title currently sitting at over 147,000 concurrent players on Steam.

For comparison, another major single player game released this year was Assassin’s Creed Shadows – and while it has so far been a hit for Ubisoft, the game achieved less than half the peak concurrent players of Oblivion on Steam (64,825 CCU).

Of course, the original Oblivion was a rather PC-centric title, and so it is likely that a solid percentage of players do hail from the PC space. Even so, there is no denying that the Oblivion remaster is already a success.

It will be interesting to see whether Microsoft chooses to share game sales data or not and how this will impact their other future plans.
