Manchester United investigate fan treatment after teargas incident in Lyon

Manchester United are investigating the treatment of their fans who attended Thursday’s 2-2 draw at Lyon. The local government admitted French police used teargas but said it was “proportionate” to restore calm.

Posts on social media showed United fans feeling the effect of the spray at the Europa League quarter-final first leg. The Rhône prefecture said in a statement: “English fans were seated in the away section waiting to be allowed to join their bus. They attempted to force their way through the security measures deployed by the national police. Projectiles were also reported to be thrown at the police. The police therefore used moderate, proportionate and necessary force (tear gas) to restore calm.

Onana errors cost Manchester United and let Lyon have the last laugh

In a scarcely credible tale of hubris André Onana was Manchester ­United’s culprit, committing two howlers that cast the goalkeeper as a mug and Nemanja Matic as a seer.

In the buildup to this match, Matic branded Onana one of United’s ­poorest-ever keepers when responding to the 29-year-old’s claim that United were better than Lyon. The tit-for-tat closed with Onana’s dig that he had won trophies at United – unlike Matic in his five years at the club – before a nightmarish evening ended with another error, this time for the hosts’ equaliser.

Eric Cantona accuses Sir Jim Ratcliffe of trying to ‘destroy’ Manchester United

Eric Cantona has accused Sir Jim Ratcliffe of trying to “destroy” Manchester United and said the minority owner rejected his offer to help rebuild the club.

Cantona is considered one of United’s greatest footballers after playing for them for five years in the 1990s. On Saturday Cantona was at FC United of Manchester, who were founded by disaffected Manchester United fans in May 2005 as a protest against Malcolm Glazer’s leveraged purchase of United, which loaded about £500m of debt on the club.

Matic calls Onana one of Manchester United’s worst goalkeepers after Lyon claim

Nemanja Matic has described André Onana as one of the worst goal­keepers in Manchester United’s history after the Cameroonian claimed his team were far better than Lyon.

In an escalating row before the players face off in the Europa League quarter-final ­opening leg at Lyon on Thursday, Onana responded by pointing out that Matic had won ­nothing as a United player from 2017 to 2022.
