‘There was always a male gaze behind it’: Madrid exhibition rewrites cliches of female Latin artists

Show looks beyond notions of exoticism, hyper-sexuality and diva behaviour to how stars gained control of their own image

From the cha-cha-chá dancers of the 1950s to the fruit-heavy turbans of Carmen Miranda, and from the golden age of Mexican cinema to the emergence of salsa stars such as Celia Cruz, the world has not lacked powerful symbols of Latin womanhood.

But a new exhibition in Madrid is inviting visitors to look past the cliches and stereotypes of the past century and to reflect on the myriad ways in which Latin women, their bodies and their stories have made their way into popular culture.

Pilot of crashed New York helicopter was reportedly low on fuel and headed back to helipad

Search resumes for six killed aboard plane: the pilot and a Spanish family with children age 10, eight and four

The pilot of a sightseeing helicopter that crashed into New York’s Hudson River on Thursday killing all six people onboard reportedly sent a radio message moments earlier saying he was low on fuel and was heading back to the helipad, its operators said on Friday.

Michael Roth, the chief executive of New York Helicopter Tours, described how the pilot never made it back to the downtown Manhattan heliport it took off from about 16 minutes previously on its sixth flight of the day, the Telegraph reported.

EU suspends retaliatory 25% tariffs on US goods after Trump U-turn

‘We want to give negotiations a chance,’ says Ursula von der Leyen in announcement of 90-day pause

The EU has suspended its retaliatory 25% tariffs on US goods for 90 days after Donald Trump’s dramatic climbdown in his trade war.

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said the EU would put on hold for 90 days the countermeasures – 25% tariffs on €21bn (£18bn) of US goods – that it had agreed on Wednesday. “We want to give negotiations a chance,” she said. “If negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will kick in.”
