The island nation will take up to 75 migrants, months after lawmakers rejected a previous request from Washington

Palau will take up to 75 migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after the tiny Pacific Island nation signed a memorandum of understanding with Washington on transfer of third-country nationals.

US deputy secretary of state Christopher Landau spoke to Palau president Surangel Whipps in a call on Tuesday about transferring third-country nationals to Palau, the two sides said in separate statements, after Palau’s lawmakers rejected a previous request from Washington on the matter earlier this year.

Pope Leo calls for kindness to strangers and the poor in Christmas message

Pope Leo has told Christians that the Christmas story should remind them of their duty to help the poor and strangers.

In his Christmas Eve sermon, the pope said the story of Jesus being born in a stable because there was no room at an inn showed followers that refusing to help those in need was tantamount to rejecting God himself.

Libya’s army chief dies in plane crash in Turkey

Libyan PM says Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad died after aircraft lost radio contact above Ankara

The Libyan army’s chief of staff, Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad, has been killed in a plane crash after leaving Turkey’s capital, Ankara.

The prime minister of Libya’s internationally recognised government confirmed on Tuesday evening that Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad had died and that four others were on the jet with him.

Accord pour la vente des opérations US de TikTok à des investisseurs principalement américains

19 ‌décembre (Reuters) - Le groupe chinois ByteDance, propriétaire de TikTok, a signé des accords contraignants avec trois grands investisseurs pour la vente d'un peu plus de ‍80% des actifs américains de la plateforme, qui seront détenus par une nouvelle entité contrôlée par des investisseurs américains et mondiaux, a déclaré jeudi le directeur général de TikTok, Shou Zi Chew, à des employés. Cette opération, réclamée par l'administration du ‍président américain Donald Trump pour éviter à TikTok d'être interdite ‍aux Etats-Unis, permet d'avancer vers l'épilogue d'un feuilleton qui a alimenté ces dernières années l'incertitude autour de l'avenir ⁠de la plateforme sur le territoire américain. Donald Trump avait initialement tenté en 2020, au ​cours de son premier mandat, d'interdire TikTok aux Etats-Unis, où l'application de vidéos est désormais utilisée régulièrement par plus de 170 ​millions d'Américains.
