Gene Hackman’s final days marked by isolation: ‘slowing down and reclusive’

The actor was likely alone in his house for days, disoriented and too frail to seek help, after death of wife Betsy Arakawa

Actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, who were found dead last month in Santa Fe, New Mexico, were rarely apart from each other, and it’s that closeness that may have led to the circumstances of their deaths.

Arakawa had become Hackman’s caregiver in his later years when he developed Alzheimer’s disease and became incapable of carrying out even the simplest of tasks. She ran the household errands, made sure he remained active and protected him from illnesses.

Louisiana death row inmate challenges nitrogen gas as execution method

Jessie Hoffman Jr, who would become first person state killed this way, says his religious rights would be violated

A man scheduled to become the first person executed by nitrogen gas in Louisiana is challenging the method in court, arguing it violates his religious beliefs.

A federal judge will decide whether executing Jessie Hoffman Jr by nitrogen hypoxia violates his constitutional right to practice his religion, which includes Buddhist breathing and meditation exercises that would be impeded by the gas during the capital punishment.

US DoJ to investigate University of California over alleged antisemitism

Justice department to determine whether UC violated Civil Rights Act of 1964 amid pro-Palestinian campus protests

The US Department of Justice is investigating the University of California system for possible antisemitic discrimination after demonstrations against Israel’s war in Gaza took place on campuses last year.

“This Department of Justice will always defend Jewish Americans, protect civil rights, and leverage our resources to eradicate institutional Antisemitism in our nation’s universities,” read a statement by Pam Bondi, the attorney general, released on Wednesday.

Man accused of stealing $25,000 worth of Lego from northern California stores

Michael Ivory Fletcher alleged to have entered at least seven stores, loaded cart with Lego items and left quickly

A man in California has been charged with nabbing about $25,000 of Lego in two state counties, according to officials.

Michael Ivory Fletcher, 32, is accused of stealing the Lego products from Target stores in Walnut Creek and San Ramon between 15 August 2024 and 15 February 2025, according to the Contra Costa district attorney’s office. He faces multiple charges of commercial burglary and grand theft.
