After years of leaks, rumours and speculation, Nintendo finally officially unveiled the Switch 2. While we will have to wait until April for the full blow-out event, the brief teaser trailer released already offers plenty to get excited for – including the fact that the new Mario Kart could feature up to 24 characters per race.
While the Switch 2 reveal focused almost entirely on showing off the console hardware itself, we did get a brief look at one game which is likely to release at or around the console’s launch: Mario Kart 9 (or whatever it ends up being called).
Visually the game doesn’t appear to be too different to the current Switch’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, however eagle-eyed fans have noticed that certain frames of the teaser showcases up to 15 characters on screen at once – breaking the series-long limit of 12 player races.
Excitingly, in editing various frames together to make a more complete image, it can be seen that the next-gen Mario Kart will in fact allow for up to 24 players per race – double that of the previous limit.
It is interesting to see Nintendo using the Switch 2’s extra horsepower to change and impact gameplay itself, rather than simply enhancing visuals. Hopefully this bodes well for all other Switch 2 titles. We will have to wait and see.
