Senior NSW police officer fined after consuming 20 standard drinks and crashing work car in tunnel

The officer was convicted of drink-driving after court heard he was seen doing floss dance while drinking before NorthConnex crash

A senior New South Wales police officer was caught on camera drinking and dancing with colleagues before he left a Sydney venue and crashed a work car into a barrier on the NorthConnex tunnel before fleeing the scene.

The officer, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was fined $1,500 and handed a two-year community corrections order at Sydney’s Downing Centre local court on Tuesday after being convicted of mid-range drink-driving.

New Zealand Rugby launches legal action against Ineos over sponsorship

New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has launched legal action against Ineos after the company, which is founded and run by the British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, allegedly dropped a sponsorship agreement with three years remaining.

Ineos branding appears on jerseys and other clothing worn by the men’s and women’s senior sides – the All Blacks and Black Ferns – as well as the New Zealand Māori team and New Zealand sevens teams after a deal signed in 2022, which was due to continue until 2028.

US justice department official seeks dismissal of charges against Eric Adams

Federal prosecutors ordered to drop charges against New York mayor, who has cultivated relationship with Trump

A top official at the US Department of Justice has ordered federal prosecutors to drop charges against New York mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat who has cultivated a warm relationship with Donald Trump.

In a two-page memo obtained by the Associated Press, acting deputy attorney general Emil Bove, an alumnus of the Manhattan office that brought the case, said that the decision to dismiss the charges was reached without an assessment of the strength of the prosecution and was not meant to call into question the attorneys who filed the case.

Yrjö Kukkapuro, renowned Finnish chair designer, dies aged 91

‘Almost every Finn has sat on a chair he designed,’ his studio says, with his postmodern creations gracing galleries around the world

Yrjö Kukkapuro, a renowned Finnish designer whose postmodern style of chairs graced waiting rooms, offices and living rooms across Finland as well as collections in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, has died aged 91.

Kukkapuro died on Saturday at his home outside Helsinki, his daughter, Isa Kukkapuro-Enbom, confirmed in an email on Sunday, as well as in a statement from Studio Kukkapuro, where she is the curator. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Australia crush Sri Lanka in second Test to complete rare series sweep

Australia have capped off a brilliant summer with a nine-wicket defeat of Sri Lanka that confirms their first clean sweep of a subcontinent Test series in almost 20 years.

Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s first president, dies aged 95

Charismatic father of the nation led the fight for independence from South Africa and ruled for 15 years as the country’s first president

Sam Nujoma, the fiery freedom fighter who led Namibia to independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990 and served as its first president for 15 years, has died aged 95.

Nujoma’s death was announced Sunday by current Namibian president Nangolo Mbumba. Mbumba said Nujoma died on Saturday night after being hospitalised in the capital, Windhoek.

Australia’s Tyler Wright makes surfing history with second Pipe Pro title

Australia’s Tyler Wright has made surfing history, becoming the first woman to win Hawaii’s iconic Pipe Pro event twice as she snapped her title drought. The two-time world champion beat American defending world champion Caitlin Simmers in a low-scoring final on Sunday (AEDT) at Banzai Pipeline.

Wright won the first women’s Pipe Pro in 2020 and Simmers took out the event a year ago. Simmers was shut down on a wave with a minute left, and Wright won the opening round of the season 7.70 to 3.94.
