Peru is set to declare a state of emergency after at least one person was killed and dozens of police officers were injured in widespread protests against President José Jerí who assumed power just days ago.
Prime minister Ernesto Alvarez said late on Thursday that the government would declare the state of emergency in Lima within hours and is preparing a package of measures to tackle rising insecurity.

It is unknown whether US military rendered aid to survivors after attack on suspected ‘narcoterrorist’ vessel
The US military carried out a new strike on Thursday against a suspected drug vessel in the Caribbean, and in what is believed to be the first such case, there were survivors among the crew, a US official told Reuters.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, did not offer additional details about the incident, which has not been previously reported. But it raises new questions, including whether the US military rendered aid to the survivors and whether they are now in US military custody.

States who received funding under an EPA project aimed to expand solar energy for low-income communities
Nearly two dozen states are suing the Trump administration over its cancellation of a $7bn grant program aimed at expanding solar energy in low-income communities, according to court papers.
In a statement on Thursday, California’s attorney general, Rob Bonta, announced two lawsuits by a group of states that received grants under the Environmental Protection Agency’s Solar for All program. The EPA’s administrator, Lee Zeldin, announced the termination of the program in August. The agency said in an email that it would not comment on pending litigation.

Thousands gather in Nairobi to pay respects to veteran opposition leader, prompting chaotic scenes at stadium
Four people have been killed in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, after security forces fired shots and teargas to disperse huge crowds at a stadium where the body of the opposition leader Raila Odinga was lying in state.
Odinga, a major figure in Kenyan politics for decades who was once a political prisoner and ran unsuccessfully for president five times, died on Wednesday aged 80 in India, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

Pontiff condemns use of hunger as a weapon of war during visit to UN Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome
Pope Leo has made an urgent appeal to global leaders to end world hunger, saying in a speech to a UN agency that allowing millions to go without food each day represented “an ethical derailment”.
In a visit to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome, the pontiff also condemned the use of hunger as a weapon of war, without naming specific conflicts or countries.

US defense secretary was returning from a brief trip to Brussels, and everyone onboard was safe, Pentagon said
A plane carrying Pete Hegseth, the US defense secretary, on Wednesday made an unscheduled landing in the United Kingdom due to a crack in the aircraft’s windshield, the Pentagon said, adding Hegseth was safe.
“The plane landed based on standard procedures and everyone onboard, including Secretary Hegseth, is safe,” Sean Parnell, a Pentagon spokesperson, said in a post on X.

Wu says Trump comments are ‘targeting Boston values’
The mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, implied the city was ready for a face-off with the US president Donald Trump over his claim he could order Fifa to remove World Cup games from Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, 22 miles south-west of the city.
Wu appeared on local podcast “Java with Jimmy” on Wednesday to respond to Tuesday’s criticism from the White House, which labeled the Democrat as “radical left”. Trump threatened he would make a call to the Fifa president, Gianni Infantino, if Boston did not “clean up its act”.
