This Day in Gaming 🎂

In retro news, I'm using an incendiary lick from K.K. Slider's guitar to light a 20-candle cake baked for Animal Crossing: Wild World, the coziest life sim I ever smashed on Nintendo DS.

I still remember slapping that cart in and strolling into a village of friendly animals, hours of fishing, house-proud decorating, digging for fossils, and writing silly letters. The real time clock and seasons made the world feel alive, and the holiday events added small joys that made each visit feel special. Wild World also let me harass my mates online through Nintendo Wi-Fi, which was a rare thrill in mine ye olden times. As I always say with this series, only the geniuses at Nintendo could make paying off a crippling mortgage entertaining.

Just like I did last holiday season, I'm getting festive with the LEGO section. In Mathew Manor, my sons and I are again racing this year's batch of LEGO Advent Calendars. We’re less than two weeks away from the premiere of Fallout Season 2, and fans have been eager for any information on how the show will handle the franchise’s return to New Vegas. Well, now we have (just a few) answers.

Speaking to a packed house at CCXP25 in Brazil, several of the show’s stars including Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, Aaron Moten, and Justin Theroux showed off a new look at Season 2 and let the audience in on what fans of the game can be excited about when the new season hits Prime Video. Season 1 contained plenty of callbacks to the games, and it looks like we can expect more of that in Season 2.

“Every single corner you look there’s an Easter egg,” said Walton Goggins, who plays Cooper Howard, otherwise known as The Ghoul. “But none more than House. It becomes this larger than life presence.”

Goggins, of course was referring to none other than Robert House, the mysterious leader of New Vegas, who is being portrayed on the show by Justin Theroux. “In the video game we don't really see flesh and blood House,” Theroux said. “Mr. House is (mainly on) screen. And I think (Fallout producers) Geneva (Robertson-Dworet), Graham (Wagner), and Jonah (Nolan) are smart enough to be like, ‘No, let's see this guy breathing. Let's see what he was like before the Armageddon.’ And so that was really fun just from an acting perspective to breathe life into that character and see him walk around. That was really fun.”

When asked about the challenges of bringing House to life, Theroux acknowledged wanting to respect the legacy of the character from the game. “The challenge was just to make him as realized as possible. Obviously not phone it in and not really try and compete with the wonderful actor (René Auberjonois, who died in 2019) who had already been his voice in the game.”

Goggins and Theroux, who are longtime friends, were excited at the chance to work together on screen. “I've been a fan and friend of Justin for a really long time,” Goggins said. “We had never worked together. What I was most looking forward to was being in that space and watching my friend do his thing and listening to him. And when he showed up, he brought an entire world with him.”

“It’s kind of like getting invited to watch your favorite magician do their magic tricks,” Theroux said of Goggins. “We had a couple really barn-burner scenes to do together and it was really fun to chop those scenes.”

Paul Giamatti isn’t just one of the big-name, Oscar-nominated stars of the next Star Trek series, Starfleet Academy (the other is Holly Hunter). He’s also a big Star Trek nerd himself, and he proved it to me when I chatted with him at the CCXP con in São Paulo, Brazil, this week.

“Seven years old, seven, eight years old,” Giamatti immediately responds when asked when his fandom began. “I watched it with my father, who was a fan from the '60s, watching in the '60s. So yeah, I go back, way back.”

Cut to half a century later, and the actor is standing in front of thousands of fans promoting his own Star Trek show on CCXP’s Thunder Stage – the Brazilian con’s version of SDCC’s Hall H. To rapturous cheers, Giamatti unveiled a clip from the latest series (this is the twelfth Trek TV show, give or take).

New Starfleet Academy Clip Revealed

In the new clip, the latest starship to take to the heavens, the USS Athena, is under heavy attack from an unknown force that seems to be engulfing the ship in a sort of cosmic sheath. As Hunter’s Captain Nahla Ake gives orders from the bridge, we see the young Academy students running to and fro in the decks below. Also spotted is Robert Picardo’s The Doctor, still swinging some 800 years after his time on the USS Voyager, as he attempts to corral the students (“Don’t panic! Breathe! Breathing is your friend!”) while acerbicly (of course) advising the captain to avoid any further direct hits to the ship. Suddenly a ship emerges in the space beyond the Athena, seemingly putting itself together from different pieces, and who appears but Giamatti’s villainous Nus Braka, who tells Captain Ake she looks “as radiant as ever” before adding that “payback’s a bitch.” End of clip!

The actor doesn’t mince words when it comes to what his favorite Trek series is.

“My favorite one probably of all of them is Deep Space Nine,” he says. “I like The Original Series. I like Next Generation. I like Voyager actually a lot. I've enjoyed Strange New Worlds a lot. Those would be top favorites. But Deep Space Nine's probably my most favorite one.”

So then going down the list of other required favorites every Star Trek fan must have…

“Yes, it would mean Sisko is my favorite captain,” he laughs. “And the Defiant is my favorite ship. I love that show. I weirdly love that show. The actors are so great on that show. All the actors on all the shows are great, but I really love that one. … I always admired Colm Meaney on Deep Space Nine because he pretty much… only 97% of what he says is technobabble. And it's so good the way he does it. And you can follow it and he looks like he really knows what he's talking about!”

Favorite episode?

“Oh, wow. Well, there's ‘The Visitor’ one when Jake gets old – that’s a classic one,” he says. “A lot of the stuff with Odo I really like. There's the episode where Jadzia almost dies on that planet and Worf goes back to save her. That was a great one. Super moving. But anything with Odo in it I really like. All that Changeling stuff is great.”

See? He knows his stuff.

Playing Nus Braka, the Half-Klingon/Half-Tellarite Villain of Starfleet Academy

Giamatti was involved in the development of his character’s unique combo of Star Trek alien races. The Klingons, of course, need no introduction, but the other half of his character Nus Braka’s genetic make-up is Tellarite, which is actually a species well known to Trek fans that dates back to the William Shatner Original Series days.

“I had been just shooting my mouth off about how much I wanted to be a Klingon,” the actor laughs. “And they were like, ‘OK, we have a Klingon [character already] and we have a lot of Klingony stuff. What if he's half? What if he's half?’ They were like, ‘We thought we'd bring the Tellarites back.’ And I thought, ‘Oh, yeah, the pig guys from The Original Series! That's two really aggressive alien types. I'm going to be really aggressive!’ So it was partially my thing about being a Klingon, but then they brought the Tellarite thing, which I thought was very funny. So I let myself get pretty hairy for the thing too!”

The actor has had some fun trying to imagine what exactly led to the conception of this half-Klingon/half-pig-man creature.

“Can you imagine those two races mating and creating this guy? Oh, my God,” he beams. “But I don't know which one – I could never decide who's the mother and who's the father. I kept thinking, is the mother a Tellarite, a female Tellarite? I was like, ‘I like that.’ I like the idea that some Klingon was attracted to this pig woman!”

None of which is to say that Nus Braka is a joke. There’s an element of whimsy to the character to be sure, but he will disintegrate you just as easily as he’ll crack a joke about you… or maybe he’ll do both.

“Well, that was the thing that they said to me when they brought it to me,” he recalls. “They said the one thing that they wanted to kind of throw to at me as an idea was that he was a comedian. He thought he was funny. And he was a very kind of showy, flashy comedian, but underneath it he's dangerous. And that combination I thought was kind of interesting. Because that's a kind of creepy thing in a psychopath, is if they're sort of funny and kind of, ‘I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding.’ Everything's just a joke and it's not really. … [But] he doesn't care. He wants to destroy everything.”

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Premiere Date

Starfleet Academy will debut worldwide with two episodes on Thursday, January 15, 2026, on Paramount+, and in Japan on Tuesday, January 23. New episodes of the 10-episode series will be released weekly after that.

The Boys Season 5 finally has a release date as well as the long-awaited teaser trailer for the fifth and final season.

Season 5 kicks off on April 8, 2026 on Prime Video, showrunner and executive producer Eric Kripke announced at CCXP Brazil, with two episodes, followed by a new episode each week. The series finale has a release date of May 20, 2026, marking the end of The Boys for good.

The trailer, below, revolves around Karl Urban’s Butcher rallying the troops as The Boys mount a fightback against Homelander, played by Antony Starr. Everyone seems up for it, although it very much looks like not everyone will make it out of the end of Season 5 alive. Keep an eye out for Jensen Ackles‘ Soldier Boy, who is back on ice and watched over by Homelander. Speaking of Homelander, we see him beat someone, or something, to a bloody pulp. A glimpse at a big name character death, perhaps?

Here’s the official blurb on The Boys Season 5:

In the fifth and final season, it’s Homelander’s world, completely subject to his erratic, egomaniacal whims. Hughie, Mother’s Milk, and Frenchie are imprisoned in a “Freedom Camp.” Annie struggles to mount a resistance against the overwhelming Supe force. Kimiko is nowhere to be found. But when Butcher reappears, ready and willing to use a virus that will wipe all Supes off the map, he sets in motion a chain of events that will forever change the world and everyone in it. It’s the climax, people. Big stuff’s gonna happen.

Season 5 not only follows on from the end of Season 4, but Season 2 of spinoff Gen V. Fans were left wondering how the incredibly powerful Marie from Gen V might fare in a showdown with overpowered The Boys supervillain Homelander. Kripke has said in the past, however, that fans shouldn’t expect Marie to appear in The Boys Season 5 as a Captain Marvel-style deus ex machina who kicks Homelander’s ass. That’s because Marie still hasn’t mastered her powers, or as Kripke has put it in a number of Gen V Season 2 finale spoiler interviews, she’s not Neo at the end of The Matrix.

Some very brief, blink-and-you'll-miss-it footage from the upcoming Amazon series Spider-Noir was just revealed at CCXP25 in Brazil. As part of a sizzle trailer shown prior to a panel for Prime Video's The Boys at the massive Thunder Stage (think San Diego Comic-con's Hall H), a brief scene from the new show starring Nicolas Cage was shown for the audience in attendence.

At the beginning of the preview, we see Spider-Noir's eyes. Then we see a mash-up of a bunch of other current and upcoming Amazon shows. We then cut to a 1930s-style burglar or crook. All of a sudden, the lights go on behind him and Spider-Noir is standing there. Cut to black.

It was just yesterday that Amazon released new posters for the series, indicating that viewers can either watch the show in black and white or color when it arrives next year.

Scream and Five Nights at Freddy's star Matthew Lillard has admitted it "it f***ing sucks" to be on the receiving end of an insult from Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill director Quentin Tarantino.

Earlier this week, Quentin Tarantino hit the headlines for saying There Will Be Blood could have been his favorite film of the 21st century if “weak sauce” actor Paul Dano wasn’t in it.

The Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs writer and director appeared on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast to reveal his 20 favorite films of the 21st century, and in doing so said There Will Be Blood might have been his top pick if it weren’t for Paul Dano, who he described as the film’s “giant flaw.” Dano played identical twins Paul and Eli Sunday in Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 period drama.

When you sit down with a game, you make a pact with it: you’ll push the buttons, and it will show you what happens when you do. A lot of games don’t really care to interrogate what that means, to use the physical realities of the medium to tell a story. Remember having to plug your controller into the second port of your PlayStation to fight Psycho Mantis? That’s rare. Instead, many of them are content to be films where you control the action. Rhythm Doctor is not one of those games.

In the eight or so hours I spent seeing its 1.0 version through to completion, Rhythm Doctor frustrated me, earned some laughs, made me tear up, and used this medium to tell a story in ways I’ve never seen a game do before. It is one of the most difficult rhythm games I’ve ever played, and one I couldn’t put down. Near the end, I felt like I might need a little rhythm therapy myself, a shock to the heart to keep me going. But I wanted to live in that world a little longer, listen to these songs a little more, spend a little more time with these characters. It was worth it. Rhythm Doctor drove me crazy, and I loved it.

In Rhythm Doctor, you are an intern assigned to Middlesea Hospital. You work remotely, so you sit behind a screen and watch what’s happening through the hospital’s cameras. The doctors and patients speak to you, but you cannot respond to them. Well, you can, but they can’t hear the intern. Like you as a player, the intern is part of this world but not of it. A participant, but not a resident. When you see yourself on screen, it is as a long arm hovering over a button. The patients sometimes jokingly call you Doctor Finger. It’s a brilliant bit of “player-as-character” that Rhythm Doctor makes the most of throughout its runtime. That this story features some absolutely gorgeous pixel art spritework is just a bonus.

The simple but extremely effective gimmick here is that Middlesea is experimenting with a new treatment that promotes healing by defibrillating patients’ hearts in time with their heartbeats. Your job is to press the button on the defibrillator in sync with the beat of their heart. That’s it. There is only one button. Press it every 7th beat in time with the patient’s heart. Line the beats up properly, and you’ll cure what ails them.

That might not sound hard, and it isn’t. At least at first. One, two, three, four, five, six, press is easy enough. But then you’ll get to polyrhythms, hemiolas, irregular time signatures, silent beats, the works. Again, all you have to do is press your button on every seventh beat. But it gets challenging quickly. I used to think I was good at rhythm games. I played Guitar Hero and Rock Band on Expert. I used to play a couple different instruments. After playing Rhythm Doctor, I no longer think that. Few games have challenged me like this did.

Sometimes you’ll be treating multiple patients at once, each with their own rhythm, and you’ll have to keep track of them simultaneously. Some may drop in and drop out. The excellent songs their hearts are beating to will abruptly change pace. You may have to hit notes in rapid succession or hold them or match a tempo you’ll hear and then have to reproduce. There is a visual indicator here, but it’s not going to hold your hand or tell you exactly when to press your lone button. You’ll have to keep pace yourself, and overcoming initially brutal levels was a thrill.

Rhythm Doctor will help you out – most levels feature a dedicated tutorial teaching you new concepts, certain beats are often preceded by unique sound effects to let you know they’re coming, and a nice nurse will often call out timing changes with a “Get Set Go!” in time to the beat before the change occurs, but visual prompts are limited. There’s no “fit the note into this handy-dandy slot it's barreling towards” in Rhythm Doctor. You have to keep time. I often found myself tapping my other hand against my thigh, silently counting to seven, or moving my head from side to side.

And you’ll need to, because Rhythm Doctor likes to mess with you, to use the idea that you’re a guy behind a screen pressing buttons to tell its story. If you’re treating a patient while a virus is messing with your connection, you’ll feel it. There will be static, the beat will be thrown off, and things will pop up or fade out. At one point, a bunch of pop-ups saying “DISTRACTION!” overwhelm your screen. As a player, it’s annoying, especially if you’re somewhat reliant on visual cues. As a storytelling conceit, it’s dynamite. Dealing with that would be difficult and irritating, especially at work! I could practically hear the virus mocking me; J.K. Simmons breathing in my ear. “Not quite my tempo.”

But that’s not the only time Rhythm Doctor pulls this trick. Sometimes, it will shrink your screen and bounce it around to the beat. Once, when Cole, a down on his luck musician with a caffeine addiction, rushes across the screen to get to Nicole, a barista at the hospital’s cafe who he’s grown fond of, the game window travels with him as you struggle to keep up via the hospital’s cameras, going entirely off your monitor before reappearing. Even the songs themselves tell a story: when a patient named Logan has trouble admitting his feelings for another named Hailey, their songs reflect it, and he often loses the beat during that level. As the two get closer across several songs, their heart rates grow closer in time. When he finally summons the courage to make it happen, the track resembles a duet at a Broadway show.

The songs here vary from showtunes to dubstep to techno and everything in-between, and each is used to tell a story like this. Every patient’s unique heart rhythm can and will show up in other tracks as they bond with one another, whether it’s a miner helping an injured baseball player rehab from an injury, an elderly couple at opposite ends of the hospital who long to see one another, or Cole and Nicole hash out their issues through song. In Rhythm Doctor, the music is part of the story. Each track moves the narrative forward, and gets to the heart of who these people are and how they feel about one another. You can treat a lot of things with medicine, but sometimes the only cure for a damaged heart is working through what caused it in the first place. I cared about these characters and their relationships, and I wanted to stick around.

That’s good, because you’ll probably have to. Rhythm Doctor holds you to a high standard. Cs may get you degrees, but you’ll need a B grade or better before you can move on to the next level. That can be a little frustrating if you get stuck, and I’m not ashamed to say I had to turn the difficulty down to clear some of the harder stages. Some even have “Night Shift” versions for an extra challenge and a bit more story, and there are several bonus levels to tackle as well, which are goofy and a lot of fun, like the one where a group of nurses pursues a limousine, kicking away projectiles the limo is hurling at them. Others are just chill vibes where you hang out with the characters.

Through it all, though, you’re reminded that while you’re part of this story, it’s not about you. Without spoilers, there’s a rather touching scene later on that you hear about but don’t witness because you’re busy helping another patient. Almost every other character is there, but you’re helping someone else, and the scene happens without you. You only hear the other characters react to it. On one level, it’s smart commentary on the limitations of being behind a screen and the role of the player; you’re not part of this world physically, not matter how badly you might want to be. Your job is to watch and press buttons. On another, it’s a reminder that no one recovery, no one part of the hospital, and no one patient, is less important than any other. It all matters. And there’s emotional resonance here. When one of Cole’s tracks says “Sometimes I’m angry I’m not doing better than I thought I’d do at this point,” I had to pause the game for a moment. I’ve been there. I understand that feeling. I understood that character, and all his flaws. And I admired his persistence in spite of it all.

Rhythm Doctor also features some shockingly relevant commentary on the state of healthcare and capitalism. As the program you’re part of gains traction, there’s pressure from the hospital’s administrator (and head doctor) to expand it, eventually resulting in layoffs to hospital staff and overworked doctors. After all, why have staff when you can have a miracle treatment an intern in their pajamas can perform from their laptop? You don’t need people, right? Just results. Rhythm Doctor ends about as perfectly as it can given all the plates it’s spinning, but it’s nice that it never pulls punches. Nothing is free; everything has a cost, and that cost might be other people.

If you need a break from the story, there’s also a comprehensive level editor to play with and community tracks to download. I’ll be honest with y’all; I’m not much of a level editor cat, but what I’ve played of the community tracks is genuinely impressive. Rhythm Doctor’s soundtrack is so good that I’ve listened to it in between sessions, but it’s great to see developer 7th Beat Games turn their baby over to the community and say “go nuts.” In a world obsessed with selling you something at every moment, editors like this feel increasingly rare, and I’m glad it’s here.

Netflix has sent subscribers an email of reassurance following the news of its $82.7 billion deal to acquire Warner Bros., amid concern over potential price rises.

The email — reviewed by IGN — promises subscribers that “nothing is changing today,” and confirms that the Warner Bros.-owned streaming platform HBO Max and Netflix will continue to operate separately until the deal closes. Netflix goes on to say that there are a number of steps it needs to complete before the deal closes, including regulatory and shareholder approval.

Hot on the heels of Friday's dramatic announcement, Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren called on the Justice Department to examine Netflix's buyout of Warner Bros., branding the deal "like an anti-monopoly nightmare." Netflix has said acquiring Warner Bros. would provide better value to subscribers and shareholders, but Warren insisted a Netflix-owned Warner Bros. risked job losses and higher subscription prices, and said that the Justice Department must now enforce the country's anti-monopoly laws "fairly and transparently."

Netflix’s email to subscribers does not rule out future price rises, but does promise that current membership plans will remain in place at least until the deal goes through. As for when that will be, Netflix said it expects to close the translation in 12-18 months. So, at the earliest, December 2026, but it could be as late as summer 2027.

There is also a message of reassurance for questions around whether HBO Max subscribers should cancel: “Netflix and Warner Bros. will remain separate until the transaction is closed.”

The Boys showrunner and executive producer Eric Kripke announced at CCXP Brazil that season 5 of the show starts streaming on April 8, 2026 on Prime Video. The finale will air on May 20, 2026, and will be the final episode of the show as a whole.

Luckily the trailer suggests the final season will be a banger, with Homelander doing what he does best (clue: it's not baking pies) and Butcher getting ready to do his best to end the milk-loving maniac.

Fallout Season 2 Exclusive New Clip

At CCXP we got a look at the upcoming second season of the Fallout TV show from Amazon. It shows fan favorites Lucy (Ella Purnell) and The Ghoul (Walton Goggins) making a pit stop in Novac on their way to New Vegas.

During the Fallout Season 2 panel Goggins revealed that this season was much more difficult to shoot than the first because of the larger story is bigger, likening it to cinema and the process of making a movie.

The new season of the Hulu show Paradise got a release date announcement and a teaser trailer at CCXP 2025. Returning on February 23 for Season 2, Paradise stars Sterling K. Brown as secret service agent Xavier Collins, and fans will remember that the debut season came with plenty of twists, so if you're new to the show, beware spoilers.

Marty Supreme Panel

On a panel for Marty Surpreme star Timothée Chalamet revealed that fellow actors like Denzel Washington, Leonardo DiCaprio inspired his career in movies.

"You get inspired by these people when you're young and sometimes the world puts you down and doesn't encourage you to dream. And this movie is exclusively about that. It's about following your dreams. Even driving here through Sao Paulo, always taking a moment to be grateful for the opportunities I had in my life. Going to the Performing Arts High School in New York, being surrounded by artists to be able to pursue my dreams, because you need people in your corner that support you."

Marty Supreme will be released in theaters on Christmas Day.

Wonder Man

New footage from Marvel's upcoming Wonder Man TV show was revealed during the Disney+ Panel at CCXP, featuring main character Simon Williams (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) auditioning for a role, before smashing up some furniture in a moment of frustration. In the comics, Wonder Man was a superhero with super strength and invincibility, who also wanted to be an actor.

Previously we've seen footage showing Williams signing documents to attest that he doesn't have super powers ahead of an audition, so it's an awkward time to get all super strength. The series debuts on January 27.

Daredevil: Born Again

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 will debut on March 4, 2026, and CCXP gave us a quick idea of what to expect, including a look at Matthew Lillard as one of the new antagonists, Mr. Charles. In the comics, Mr. Charles was Charles Burroughs, a dangerous psychopath, and damn Lillard always gives good crazy. We also got to see the return of Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Matt Murdock having what looked like a seizure, and Wilson Fisk doing a bit of boxing.

Percy Jackson is coming to Fortnite. The popular series, based on the novels by Rick Riordan and now streaming on Disney+, was just announced to be getting its very own Fortnite Island on December 9.

Revealed on stage at CCXP25 in Brazil, Percy Jackson: Siege of Monsters will allow players to “embark on an authentic Percy Jackson adventure across an island map inspired by Camp Half-Blood – the earthly sanctuary and training facility for the children of mortals and Greek gods. As newly arrived demigods, players must discover the identity of their godly parent, gain new divine powers, and ally with their fellow demigods for a climactic battle against Scylla and Charybdis on the Sea of Monsters.”

Players will be able to meet various characters from the popular stories, rendered in the likenesses of the actors from the streaming series, including Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, and Grover Underwood, and “complete multiple side quests” and other activities “inspired by the first two seasons of the show.”

I recently spoke with the stars and producers of the show about bringing some fan-favorite storylines to Fortnite. Walker Scobell, who plays Percy on the series, and co-star Aryan Simhadri (Grover) had been begging producers to get their characters into Fortnite “since day one.”

“I'm just excited to be the guy from Fortnite,” says Scobell. “That's what I want people to call me. If that's the only thing I'm ever remembered for, I'm fine with that. Percy Jackson? No, he's the guy from Fortnite.”

Series Executive Producer and Co-showrunner Dan Shotz, who presented a sneak peak of the Fortnite island at CCXP, says bringing Percy Jackson to the game involved a lot of moving pieces. “We have worked directly with Disney to build an entire world within Fortnite,” Shotz says. “You're going to get to see incredible monsters. You get to fight the Minotaur, you get to have a boss battle with Scylla and Charybdis, and you also just get to hang out with the gang from Percy Jackson. It's pretty epic.”

Dior Goodjohn, who plays Clarisse on the show, agrees: “It's really, really sick. You kind of know the magnitude of what you're doing when they put you in a video game or when you get a doll made of you. This is insane that this is real life for all of us right now. It's crazy.”

Percy Jackson Creator Rick Riordan says it was important to adapt his stories for a younger, modern audience. “I cannot tell you how many years the fans have been asking me, ‘When are we going to get a Percy Jackson immersive game?’” Riordan says. “I (played) my share of World of Warcraft when I was younger, (so) I get it. I totally get it.”

Leah Sava Jeffries, who portrays Annabeth, says she used to play Fortnite but intends to jump back in now that she and her co-stars are featured in the game. “This is making me want to go back and play it again,” Jeffries says. “I have been waiting for this for so long, and now I really feel like this is our moment.”

Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians hits Disney+ December 10.

The second season of the Hulu streaming series Paradise got a release date announcement and a teaser trailer today at the CCXP convention in São Paulo, Brazil. Returning on February 23 for Season 2, Paradise stars Sterling K. Brown as secret service agent Xavier Collins as he unravels the mystery of the president of the United States' murder. And that's just the start of things for this show, which pulls more than a couple of rugs out from under its audience -- and characters -- throughout its first season.

Brown was on hand for the CCXP panel, along with series creator and executive producer Dan Fogelman and co-star Shailene Woodley, who joins Paradise for the new season. Here's the official synopsis of Season 2 from Hulu: "Xavier searches for Teri out in the world and learns how people survived the three years since The Day. Back in Paradise, the social fabric frays as the bunker deals with the aftermath of Season 1, and new secrets are uncovered about the city's origins."

Brown had the following to say to the CCXP crowd about the new season: "So three years, being in this isolated thing from the rest of the world, thinking that the rest of the world has been destroyed, that nobody else existed. Then I finally go out into the world and I see that people, they have survived. ... But you do see the resourcefulness of humanity finding a way to survive when it doesn't seem like there is a way to survive, and people coming together and sharing their resource. ... There is a part of me that has to trust and believe in the goodness of people. Right? To survive something you can only get through it together. If everybody's scared at everybody all the time, then it's just war. At some point in time you'll have to come together and fight as a team."

When Does Paradise Season 2 Debut?

The second season of Paradise debuts on Monday, February 23, with three episodes. Thereafter, new episodes of Paradise will drop weekly.

The 2025 edition of CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil, is happening at this very moment, and has already seen some major reveals, featuring Fallout, Supergirl, Marty Supreme, Percy Jackson Season 2, Paradise Season 2, and of course some Marvel goodies as well, specifically some in-the-room-only footage from both the upcoming Wonder Man and Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.

Here's what we saw:

Wonder Man's Powers

Wonder Man stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the title character, aka Simon Williams, who is an actor in Hollywood who just happens to also have superpowers. Ben Kingsley returns to the MCU as that universe's other most notable actor, Trevor Slattery, for what looks to be a comedic look at the world of superhero filmmaking -- and maybe superhero fatigue as well.

At one point in the sneak peek, we see Williams get frustrated and smash a table, revealing his powers which have largely been held back in the marketing of this series so far (and in the character's life apparently as well, since we know from the trailers that he has to sign an agreement in one scene that says he doesn't have powers before he can audition for the role). This moment of table-destruction was previously glimpsed in a Disney+ trailer for their various upcoming series, but any real look at Williams' abilities remains elusive with the series' debut coming on January 27.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Footage

On the Daredevil: Born Again front, the exclusive CCXP footage showed off several noteworthy bits and pieces, including the return of Krysten Ritter to the MCU as Jessica Jones, Matt Murdock's former fellow Defender (though you can't blame them if they don't talk much about that), Charlie Cox's Matt having what looks like a seizure, Wilson Bethel's Dex/Bullseye possibly drinking a milkshake ("I drink your milkshake!"), Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk boxing a guy, lots of fighting (of course), and... our first look at Matthew Lillard as a new antagonist for the Man Without Fear named Mr. Charles.

According to Entertainment Weekly, via The Direct, Marvel’s Head of TV and Animation Brad Winderbaum had this to say about the character: "He plays a character named Mr. Charles. The story is about power. When Wilson Fisk takes over New York, not just as a mayor but as a king in a way, it puts him in a new class of power players on the international stage. Matthew Lillard's character represents that."

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 will debut on March 4, 2026, and a third season is also in the works.

After the huge success of the Amazon Fallout TV show, some have wondered whether The Elder Scrolls, Bethesda’s fantasy video game franchise, might be next in line for an adaptation. But what does Bethesda boss Todd Howard think?

In an interview with Eurogamer ahead of the launch of Fallout Season 2, Howard refused to rule out the possibility of an Elder Scrolls TV show, but did suggest the post-apocalyptic sci-fi franchise Fallout was better suited to an adaptation.

"I will say this, the Fallout journey was like a 10 year one," Howard replied to the suggestion of an Elder Scrolls adaptation. "After Fallout 3, people were asking to do a movie or show for Fallout, and we really took our time."

Howard "can't rule in or rule out an Elder Scrolls thing in the future," Eurogamer said, but he also believes the Fallout franchise was "more uniquely suited" and had "more to say in its genre.”

Howard continued: "But, you never know. I think the impact of the show on Fallout as a franchise has been bigger than I expected, so it does make you think like, 'Hey, is there a path?' But, nothing today... [and] I'm willing to say 'no' for a decade."

The Fallout series is wide-ranging in tone and content. Indeed, Season 2 star Macaulay Culkin touched on this in a recent interview with IGN, explaining why he’s so big into the Fallout lore.

“You could have zombies in it, you have deathclaws, you have monsters and things like that,” he said. “I mean, gosh, you have aliens. You name it, you can throw it at the wall. Even Fallout 76, I mean, the Mothman is now fair game. It is that kind of stuff. There's no really shape to it. You can kind of stick any kind of shape piece into that hole.”

And in any case, there’s no sign of Fallout slowing down when it comes to the TV series. Season 3 is already confirmed, and its stars have indicated they’d be willing to continue playing their characters for many more series beyond that. In May, Aaron Moten, who plays Brotherhood of Steel hopeful Maximus, said the Fallout series’ “endpoint” runs until Season 5 or Season 6.

“When I signed on to do the series, we would have a starting point and they gave me the endpoint,” Moten said. “And that endpoint hasn’t changed. But it is Season 5, 6 type of endpoint.

“We’ve always known that we were gonna take our time with the development of the characters.”

Perhaps when that is done and dusted, Bethesda might turn its attention to an Elder Scrolls adaptation. Will The Elder Scrolls 6 be out by then? One can only hope.

The Lord of the Rings movies are coming back to theaters next year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring — but be prepared to strap yourself in for the long haul, as they’re all the Extended Editions.

Fathom Entertainment will release all three Extended Editions from Peter Jackson’s trilogy in DBOX presentation from January 16-18, then in standard formats from January 23-25, in theaters nationwide as part of a two-weekend event.

Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings movies are long enough in standard form, but the Extended Editions are epics. The Return of the King Extended Edition, for example, is nearly four-and-a-half hours long including credits.

Perhaps wisely, Fathom is staggering the release of the movies across each weekend period, so you can’t watch all three Extended Editions back-to-back. That might be for the best, since doing so would take you nearly 12 hours!

I've always loved The Lord of the Rings. I wouldn't necessarily say I'm fanatical about it, though. I already own copies of the books and the movies, so I'm not usually swayed by the endless barrage of Lord of the Rings gifts the internet seems to throw my way. I do really like the look of this Battle for Middle-Earth Chess set, however. I've seen a lot of really cool chess sets in my day, but this one appears to be surprisingly well done for how affordable it is. I don't even play that much chess and I've found myself adding it to my Christmas wishlist this year.

Timothée Chalamet and writer-director Josh Safdie took the stage at CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil, today to hype up fans for Marty Supreme (review), the duo's upcoming, highly buzzed-about film.

During the panel, which saw the actor donning a Brazilian flag with his face on it at one point -- plus an array of ping-pong-headed men accompanying him, Chalamet was asked what moves him to aspire to greatness in his career.

"The people that inspired me to become an actor in the first place," responded the Dune star. "The greats before me, the Denzel Washingtons, the Leonardo DiCaprios, the people that laid a path that you aspire to as a young man, as a young artist. You get inspired by these people when you're young and sometimes the world puts you down and doesn't encourage you to dream. And this movie is exclusively about that. It's about following your dreams. Even driving here through Sao Paulo, always taking a moment to be grateful for the opportunities I had in my life. Going to the Performing Arts High School in New York, being surrounded by artists to be able to pursue my dreams, because you need people in your corner that support you."

"Equally, Marty Supreme is about an underdog, it's about believing your dreams when no one has your back, when no one believes in you, when the people you think love you the most, that claim to be in love with you, don't have your back. And then he's somehow persevering through it to be the greatest table tennis player of all time."

In his review of Marty Supreme, IGN's Michael Calabro said it was "equal parts fun and stressful" and that "Marty Supreme combines the chaotic directing style of Josh Safdie with the charisma of Timothée Chalamet to make a one-of-a-kind ping pong movie that is, without a doubt, one of the year’s best films.

Prime Video brought the cast of Fallout to CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil, today to, ahem, prime fans for Season 2 of the hit show, which will be arriving in less than two weeks. On hand were Ella Purnell (Lucy MacLean), Aaron Moten (Maximus), Walton Goggins (The Ghoul), and Justin Theroux (Robert Edwin House), who joins the show for the new season as the villain fans will remember from New Vegas.

During the panel, a scene from the new season was revealed, and you can watch a shorter version of it right here. (You'd have to fly to Brazil for the extra 30 seconds or so.) Featuring the video game location of Novac and Dinky the T-Rex, the scene would seem to be just a taste of the many game references the new season will be including as the story delves into the New Vegas of it all...

Obviously Lucy and The Ghoul are still working together, though neither one seems particularly pleased about it. But, man, if The Ghoul doesn't need a hand at the moment...

"I think so much of Lucy and The Ghoul is revealed over the course of this apocalyptic road trip they take," Goggins told the crowd. "Ella was saying that either she'll become more like me or I'll become more like her. And it really is through this rhythm that you see The Ghoul change, and Lucy change! But for me, [The Ghoul's human persona] Cooper Howard, you got to know him a bit in Season 1, but Season 2 is a deep dive and deep exploration picking up where we left off in Season 1 about how much, how little he knows about the world that he thought he knew. And so much of The Ghoul is informed by Cooper Howard's experience in the past, and it's the way in which these writers architected it. The way in which the directors chose to tell the story visually, it's very powerful and very cinematic. And I'll be the third person [here] to say, I can't wait for you guys to see it!"

Fallout Season 2 debuts on December 17 on Prime Video, with a new episode dropping each week until the season finale on February 4.

Battlefield Studios has published the Battlefield 6 update 1.1.3.0 patch notes ahead of next week’s Winter Offensive update, revealing a detailed list of audio improvements, soldier visibility tweaks, a range of map adjustments, and more.

Patch notes for the third major Season 1 update were published in a post on the EA shooter series’ website today. The full breakdown follows up on promises made by BF Studios’ outline from earlier this week and touches on every notable change coming to Battlefield 6 and REDSEC when Winter Offensive reaches its December 9 release date.

Though today’s patch notes cover everything from audio to Sector sizes, players may be happy to see the studio continuing to adjust an issue that has wormed its way to the front of online discussion since launch: hit registration. BF Studios says the 1.1.3.0 changes should result in more predictable bullet impact and easier-to-read damage feedback thanks to tweaks to quick aim, pre-zoom firing, and close-quarters gunfights.

Other elements the Battlefield 6 developers took aim at with the Winter Offensive update include better weapon handling, improved character highlights and animations for visibility, gadget reliability, and refined gameplay for vehicle-savvy players. Launch players will also notice relatively extensive changes to Sectors and vehicles across seven Breakthrough maps: Manhattan Bridge, Mirak Valley, New Sobek City, Operation Firestorm, Liberation Peak, Siege of Cairo, and Empire State.

It may be some time before players get a handle on whether many of these changes correct the balance of the average Battlefield 6 multiplayer match. Those audio tweaks, however, will likely be noticeable from the get-go, with the hope being that infantry noise is clearer and easier to read at different distances.

“We’ve also continued addressing performance and memory issues that could cause sounds, such as footsteps or vehicle audio, to drop out or fail to play, especially during large-scale Battle Royale matches,” BF Studios says in the update 1.1.3.0 patch notes. “To get ahead of this as we add more audio content to the game, we’ve adjusted the memory priorities for most sounds in the game and optimized how some larger audio assets load. In practical terms, this means that important combat, movement, and vehicle sounds should play more consistently even under heavy load.

“These changes are part of an ongoing effort to improve the overall stability of the soundscape. While this isn’t a complete overhaul, and there may still be edge cases depending on hardware and match conditions, it's a big step toward more reliable and predictable sound across the game.”

Each change arrives in addition to new weapons, limited-time winter events, and more new content that players have been told to expect since launch. Highlights include the Ice Lock Empire State map, the Ice Lock multiplayer and Gauntlet modes, the Ice Climbing Axe melee weapon, Portal updates, and a mini–Winter Offensive-themed battle pass bonus path. It’s the latest in the run of Battlefield 6 Season 1 chapter updates, which saw Rogue Ops bring Blackwell Fields and battle royale to the experience October 28, while California Resistance added Eastwood November 18.

Battlefield 6 Update 1.1.3.0 Patch Notes

Update 1.1.3.0 delivers a broad range of fixes and refinements across Battlefield 6, improving soldier clarity, weapon reliability, vehicle behaviour, audio consistency, and overall gameplay flow. This update also includes several quality-of-life improvements across UI, HUD, and controller aiming options, along with map-specific updates designed to stabilise objective play and reduce round-end matchmaking frustration.

We also made improvements to reduce cases where player settings could be reset when updating the game to the newest version. While this behaviour should now occur less frequently, we are still seeing isolated instances and expect to fully resolve the issue in an upcoming update.

New Content: Winter Offensive

• New Time-Limited Map: Ice Lock Empire State. A winter-shrouded version of Empire State featuring frozen streets and seasonal environmental visuals.
• New Time-Limited Multiplayer and Gauntlet Mode: A themed event mode playable across Domination, Conquest, and Gauntlet mission variations on Ice Lock Empire State featuring the event-limited “Freeze” mechanic.
• New Melee Weapon: the Ice Climbing Axe. Unlocked through the Winter Offensive Bonus Path.

• Fixed an issue where lock-on indicators appeared for Engineers without a lock-on capable launcher equipped.

Supply Pouch

• Fixed an issue where the Supply Pouch instantly regenerated health on deployment.

While existing syntax remains unchanged, any TypeScript code that explicitly references generic object types will now need to specify mod.SFX or mod.VO as appropriate.
• Fixed an issue where mod.PlayVO() always played the voiceover for the Alpha flag, regardless of the flag specified by the script.
• SDK Assets for MainStreet, ClubHouse, and Marina have been corrected to only use relevant assets.

AI:

• AI bots can now respond to ammo, healing, and pickup requests.
• Fixed an issue that caused AI repairing friendly vehicles to be less responsive than intended.

WEAPONS:

• Adjusted damage for the Rorsch Mk-2 SMRW Rail Gun against fully armoured soldiers. Headshots now kill the opponent on one shot while a bodyshot will leave the opponent with 10 HP.

GADGETS:

• Fixed an issue with incorrect textures on the projectile deployed by the XFGM-6D Recon Drone
• Fixed an issue where the XFGM-6D Recon Drone’s altitude unintentionally decreased as the match went on.

CALL-INS:

• Fixed an issue where Smoke Cover could not be activated during the late stages of a match.
• The UAV now fully explodes on impact when shot down.

MAP:

• Fixed an issue where a Razer keyboard lightning event did not trigger when interacting with antennas on the “Signal Hack” mission.

Battle Royale

• Improved loot box placement across the map for more reliable accessibility.

Gauntlet

• Fixed an issue where M-COMs in Wreckage would not reactivate after being destroyed.

UI & HUD:

• Fixed an issue where the armour bar of your team mates were showing even though they were at full capacity.

Battle Royale

• Added clearer distinction between player and squad member inventory requests.
• Added upgrade notifications to the loot feed when a weapon is improved.
• Fixed an issue where ping icons of lootable vehicles would disappear from the mini map when the players get more than 25m away from them.
• Fixed an issue where the Tank Hunter mission UI could remain active if the targeted squad destroyed its own tank.
• Updated the artwork for mission rewards to reflect new keycard changes.

Gauntlet

• Added correct interaction prompts for counter-mission teams when defusing explosives in Wreckage.
• Fixed an issue where the scoreboard was sorted by deaths instead of score.
• Fixed an issue where the Loadout screen overlay could incorrectly appear over the Gauntlet Mission Briefing on Aftermath.
• Fixed team-ownership colours for M-COMs in Wreckage missions.

AUDIO:

• Fixed an issue where subtitles would not appear correctly during insertion.
• Fixed missing UI audio when unlocking the first Field Upgrade.
• Increased the volume of armour-break audio for both incoming and outgoing hits.

Direct from the showroom floor of CCXP 2025 in São Paulo, Brazil, we've got a close-up look at Supergirl's costume from the 2026 DC movie. Also along for the ride is the Girl of Steel's dog Krypto, or a statue of him at least.

Warner Bros. and DC's activation dominates the São Paulo Expo where CCXP is held, as it's situated right next to the Omelete Stage, which is a location where the stars and creators who are visiting the convention brave the showfloor amid a sea of fans.

Supergirl stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El, returning after her brief appearance in last summer's Superman. Directed by Craig Gillespie (Fright Night, I, Tonya, Cruella), the film is an adaptation of the comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. James Gunn and Peter Safran of course serves as producers on the film.

Supergirl will be released on June 26, 2026.

Earlier this year, Disney announced it would bring the original Star Wars film, later dubbed Episode IV: A New Hope, back to theaters for the film's 50th anniversary in 2027. But it looks like we'll be seeing it a little earlier than we originally thought, on February 19, 2027.

This comes from an official announcement on the Star Wars website, which also revealed another piece of pretty big news. The version of A New Hope that will show in theaters in 2027 will be a "newly restored" version of the original 1977 theatrical release. This is likely the same version that was shown earlier this year in London at the Film on Film Festival.

The original version of the film features a number of differences from the Special Edition, which at the behest of George Lucas has replaced the original in just about every possible medium for watching it since 1981. The differences are the origin of the "Han shot first" controversy, which is probably the most-discussed aspect of the differences, but there are a number of other changes of varying levels of subtlety throughout.

Lucas has been firm over the years that the Special Edition is his true vision for the film, speaking to the Associated Press in 2004 about his feelings:

The Special Edition, that’s the one I wanted out there. The other movie, it’s on VHS, if anybody wants it. I’m not going to spend the — we’re talking millions of dollars here — the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn’t really exist anymore. It’s like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I’m sorry you saw a half-completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be. I’m the one who has to take responsibility for it. I’m the one who has to have everybody throw rocks at me all the time, so at least if they’re going to throw rocks at me, they’re going to throw rocks at me for something I love rather than something I think is not very good, or at least something I think is not finished.

It's unclear if this 2027 showing and the London festival showing are indicators of Lucas relaxing his stance a bit, or if everyone has just sufficiently bullied him into letting it exist alongside the Special Edition. Probably Disney's ownership of Lucasfilm has something to do with it. Or, as he told People Magazine in October of this year, perhaps he's simply managed to let go. “Of course I’ve moved past it," he said. "I mean, I’ve got a life."

We also don't know how long Star Wars will stay in theaters. The original announcement suggested it would debut on April 30, 2027, with the intent of it showing at least through May the 4th, or Star Wars Day. It's possible they'll keep it in theaters long enough to still celebrate May the 4th, or perhaps Disney has other, even splashier plans for the big 50th. We only have to wait just over a whole year to find out.
