A Riders Republic Film Is in the Works From Bad Boys for Life Director Duo

Ubisoft's extreme sports game Riders Republic is the latest in a long line of video games heading to the silver screen. The publisher announced today that a feature film adaptation of 2021's Riders Republic is underway, and it already has a directorial duo seated behind the camera.

In a press release, Ubisoft Film & Television annnounced it's partnering with Gaumont for the adaptation of Riders Republic. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the Belgian duo who directed Bad Boys for Life and Bad Boys: Ride or Die, are already signed on to direct.

The script adaptation will be penned by Noé Debré, whose credits include Stillwater and The World Is Yours.

Not much has been said about the direction, other than the adaptation is "poised to be an electrifying action movie, delivering non-stop thrills, humor, and spectacular stunts on the snowy slopes of the Alps," per Ubisoft.

2021's Riders Republic mixed elements of extreme sports simulation with open-world exploration, akin to Ubisoft's The Crew games. "Riders Republic is an excellent, arcadey extreme sports sandbox with bonkers multiplayer events, an impressive open world, and unfortunate server issues," wrote our reviewer in IGN's 8/10 review of its launch version.

In the years since, Ubisoft has gradually added more to the experience, with Season 14 adding a Park Creator for players to form their own playgrounds. It certainly seems like players have been gradually poking away at Riders Republic over time.

As for a feature film adaptation, it remains to be seen what narrative might be concocted around all the extreme sports action. Hopefully there's at least some sick tricks and crazy stunts, if nothing else.

Video game adaptations are certainly picking up in earnest, though. From box office successes like the Sonic and Mario movies, to recent attempts like Until Dawn, to upcoming adaptations like Clair Obscur and Death Stranding, everyone seems to be getting in on the video game adaptation trend. So why not Riders Republic?

Scarlett Johansson Calls Out Oscars For Snubbing Avengers: Endgame: 'It Was An Impossible Film That Shouldn't Have Worked'

Actress Scarlett Johansson has two Academy Award nominations under her belt, but she still can’t understand why Avengers: Endgame, which she starred in as Black Widow, didn’t walk away with more than its one nomination for visual effects.

“How did this film not get nominated for an Oscar?” Johansson wondered about the 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe smash hit in a recent interview with Vanity Fair. “It was an impossible movie that should not have worked, that really works as a film — and also, it’s one of the most successful films of all time.”

Avengers: Endgame is certainly considered one of the best of the MCU outputs in recent years, but the Academy has rarely afforded top honors — such as the acting and directing categories for example — to superhero (or even genre) fare. In fact, the only Marvel film to date to snag a nomination is 2018’s Black Panther. That said, Johansson’s turn as Natasha Romanoff was pretty award-worthy, from her first appearance in 2010’s Iron Man to her death in Endgame.

However, the actress also told Vanity Fair that she most likely would never return to that world. “It would be very hard for me to understand in what capacity [returning] would make sense for me, for the character that I play,” she explained.

“I miss my buddies and really would love to be with them forever, but what works about the character is that her story is complete. I don’t want to mess with that. For fans, too — it’s important for them.”

After Black Widow’s death in Endgame, Johansson returned for one more spin as Romanoff. She starred in the prequel film Black Widow in 2021, which she also executive produced.

Get 1 Year of Peacock TV for Just $24.99 ($2 Per Month)

Peacock TV just launched another seasonal coupon code. Get one year of the ad-supported Peacock Premium plan for only $24.99 - or about $2.08 per month - when you apply coupon code "SPRINGSAVINGS". This promotion starts now and runs through April 30. That's 70% off the normal annual price of $79.99. Anyone who isn't currently subscribed to Peacock TV should be eligible, and that includes past subscribers. This beats out the previous winter sale price of $29.99.

1 Year of Peacock Premium for $24.99

In our recently updated Peacock TV streaming service review, Rosie Knight wrote, "When it comes to growth and evolution since its launch, Peacock has really had an impressive journey. In 2024 it feels like the service has found its niche as an affordable platform with a wide range of viewing options. When every other service is edging closer towards $20 a month, Peacock offers new straight-from-the-theater movies, an untouchable TV back catalog, and even live sports. It's a selection that keeps Peacock in the streaming conversation, while the affordability raises it up to one of the best options."

Watch Wicked Exclusively on Peacock

Watch Nosferatu on Peacock

Watch The Wild Robot on Peacock

Access to Live Sports, Including NFL Sunday Night Football

Since Peacock TV is owned and operated by NBC (Peacock, after all, is named after the NBC logo), you get access to NFL Sunday Night football games. Unfortunately, you will not be able to stream this year's Super Bowl LIX (Eagles and Chiefs) since it is being televised by Fox. You also get access to other live sports like Premier League, Big Ten Football, and WWE.

Exclusive Access to The Office

Peacock has a couple of other big wins. This is the only platform where you're able to stream all episodes of The Office for no additional fee. If you aren't familiar with the inter-work relationships between Michael Scott and Dwight Schrute, you are seriously missing out. If that still doesn't tickle your fancy, Yellowstone is another outstanding TV series that just recently ended with its fifth season. (This was a Paramount original that Peacock had the streaming rights to because Paramount made a deal with Peacock before Paramount+ existed. Complicated!) Video game aficionados will find plenty of things to like here as well, like the superbly animated new Super Mario Bros. kids' flick, the Five Night At Freddies supernatural horror, or the Twisted Metal TV series.

T-Mobile's New Experience Plans Offer More Perks and a 5-Year Price Guarantee at a Lower Price

Earlier in April, T-Mobile launched two new mobile family plans intended to replace the Go5G and Go5G Plus services, which included unlimited talk, text, and premium data. The new plans - "Experience Beyond" and "Experience More" - carry over the benefits of Go5G but also tack on new perks like a 5-year fixed price guarantee, a higher mobile hotspot data cap, T-Satellite with Starlink (for "Experience Beyond"), and more, all at a lower monthly rate.

T-Mobile Experience Plans: What They Offer

T-Mobile's Experience plans are currently available as two separate tiers. The "Experience More" plan offers 3 lines for $140 per month with AutoPay (otherwise $185 per month), plus taxes and fees. The "Experience Beyond" plan offers 3 lines for $180 per month with AutoPay (otherwise $230 per month). The benefits for each plan are as follows:

1. T-Mobile Experience More ($140/mo with AutoPay)

  • 5-year price guarantee
  • Upgrade-ready every two years
  • Unlimited talk and text
  • Unlimited 4G & 5G LTE premium data
  • Netflix (standard with ads) subscription included
  • Apple TV+ subscription included
  • 60GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data
  • Unlimited text, 15GB of high-speed data in Canada & Mexico
  • Unlimited text, 5GB of high-speed data in 215+ countries & destinations
  • Full-flight texting and Wi-Fi with streaming where available

2. T-Mobile Experience Beyond ($180/mo with AutoPay)

  • 5-Year price guarantee
  • Upgrade-ready every year
  • Unlimited talk and text
  • Unlimited 4G & 5G LTE premium data
  • T-Satellite with Starlink service (through end of 2025)
  • Netflix (standard with ads) subscription included
  • Apple TV+ subscription included
  • Hulu (standard with ads) included
  • Unlimited mobile hotspot included
  • Unlimited text, 30GB of high-speed data in Canada & Mexico
  • Unlimited text, 15GB of high-speed data in 215+ countries & destinations
  • Full-flight texting and Wi-Fi with streaming where available
  • Watch & tablet lines just $5/month

The "Experience More" plan is more than sufficient for most people, since you get unlimited talk, text, and premium 5G and 4G LTE data for $45 per month (with autopay) plus a 5 year guarantee and both Netflix and Apple TV+ subscriptions. The 2 year upgrade path is perfectly reasonable since most people don't replace their phone every year.

If, however, you do like to be at the forefront of smartphone tech, or you plan to connect an additional device like your tablet or Apple Watch, and/or you travel often (and could benefit from a higher international data cap or Starlink accessibility), then the "Experience Beyond" plan is an attractive option at $60 per month (with autopay).

Did you know? T-Mobile offers incentives for switching carriers

As part of its Family Freedom initiative, T-Mobile will cover up to $800 per line to help pay off your AT&T and Verizon phones (even if they’re locked) and a new smartphone when trading in that device. Families score with deals like four flagship smartphones on Us and four new voice lines for just $100/month on Essentials.

These plans with no yearly contract - What does that mean?

Not to be confused with your phone's financing plan

T-Mobile's "Experience" are postpaid plans that don't lock you into any sort of yearly contact, so you are free to cancel your service at anytime. Keep in mind, however, that if you finance a phone through T-Mobile, you are still required to make payments on the phone for however long the contract entails, usually for a length of 24 months. Although you can opt to pay your phone off early, T-Mobile often offers discounts on their phones in the form of bill credits that are applied every month. So, paying a phone off early could mean you forfeit the bill credits for the remainder of the term. As per the norm, common sense dictates that you read the fine print before committing to any form of contractual obligation.

New Superman Trailer Shows Fresh Looks at Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Krypto Punching The Engineer in the Face

DC Studios has released a new Superman trailer revealing three minutes of the upcoming movie.

The James Gunn-directed film has a supporting cast of superheroes and supervillains, and we get a better look at those characters in this trailer. We see Nathan Fillion in action as Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, batting enemies away with a flick of his hand, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and our best look yet at The Engineer, played by María Gabriela de Faría.

We now know it’s The Engineer who destroys the robots who care for Superman in the Fortress of Solitude, including, presumably, Kelex. We also see Krypto the Superdog perform a flying punch at The Engineer during the battle. Clearly Krypto isn't afraid to get his paws dirty when it comes to fighting bad guys.

The Hammer of Boravia, who was revealed in yesterday's trailer teaser, appears as expected in the full trailer. We also see Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) and Ultraman in action. There's a lot more of Edi Gathegi's Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan's Rex Mason / Metamorpho.

Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s relationship is front and centre, with Lois interviewing Clark in Superman mode. It looks like the interview ends up in a row as the pair argue of Superman’s intervention in a war on foreign soil.

Elden Ring Nightreign: How Limveld Will Change From Run to Run – IGN First

One of the biggest questions left over after Elden Ring Nightreign’s network test back in February was: “How will the world of Limveld change in the real game”? After all, Nightreign is, for all intents and purposes, a roguelite. And one of the core elements of any roguelite is a degree of randomness or procedural generation that ensures that every run feels just a little bit different. Nightreign has that in the loot department, with every run giving you different rewards and forcing you to cobble together a build based on what you’re able to find within that run; and also in the enemy and boss department, since none of the boss encounters are static, with the sole exception of the Nightlord battle on Day 3. But as far as the world of Limveld, we never really got a chance to see how it changes from run to run during the Network Test.

During my two days of playtime at FromSoft’s office and over the course of about 10 full runs, I got my answer. Here’s how Limveld will change from run-to-run in Elden Ring Nightreign:

Elden Ring Nightreign: How Limveld Will Change

Actually, we jumped the gun. Before we go into the ways Limveld will change, let’s quickly establish what doesn’t change:

  • This overall structure of Limveld will not change. The shape of the island, the major geographical features, the positioning of the cliffs, rivers, and lakes, will all be the same, barring a few major exceptions that we’ll cover in just a bit.
  • The locations of sites of grace, evergaols, the launching spirit springs, cave entrances and exits, the spectral trees and the wind currents, all of these are static and do not change location from run-to-run.
  • There is also a giant castle that features exceptionally tough battles and big rewards right smack in the middle of the map that will never change.

Everything else, from the locations of all of the rest of the points of interest, the types of rewards offered at those points of interest, to the wandering mini-bosses, and the bosses you’ll fight at the end of Day 1 and 2 are left completely up to chance.

That said, there are two other huge factors that can completely alter a run. The first are world events known as “Shifting Earth”. Occasionally, before you even launch into a level, you’ll be made aware that there is a Shifting Earth modifier in effect. In our playtime, the one we encountered was “Crater,” which transformed the northern section of the map, placing a giant crater in the middle and rivers of lava all around it. The enemies around and inside the crater are no joke, and wiped the floor with us when we first attempted to even get close enough to investigate the crater on the first day.

But investigate it you should, and you should do so as soon as the second day begins, if you’re up to the challenge. Exploring the crater took us pretty much the entirety of the second day, but when we did eventually make it all the way to the bottom, we beat a boss that granted us an epic rarity level reward by itself, but then also the unique reward of being able to take any weapon in our arsenal and upgrade it to max for free! It’s a risky endeavor though, as in order to escape from the crater, you need to use a bunch of spectral trees and ride the hawks from platform to platform as you try to escape, which will certainly lead to nail-biting escape sequences when you take too long in the crater and now must race against the clock to get out while the circle closes in around you.

The other big way that runs can change are through the appearance of certain events that seem to occur completely randomly and can throw a huge wrench into an otherwise routine run. I’ve seen a couple of these, and some might be familiar with the Margit invasion from the Network Test, in which Margit the Fell will just all of a sudden jump into your game and mercilessly hunt your squad down wherever they are.

But a new one that I encountered involved the appearance of a swirling tornado-like phenomenon in the sky. When our squad approached it, we were suddenly attacked by a very tough group of AI-controlled Nightfarers who seemingly invaded us from another world. Like typical NPC invasions in Elden Ring, these enemies were smarter and hit a lot harder than typical enemies, making it another big risk/reward consideration to explore the areas near one of these ominous swirling tornadoes in the sky.

The most impactful of all of these random events, though, was the appearance of a mysterious boss that would attack from miles away with mortar shots of level-sapping bugs. That's right, get hit even just once by these telegraphed mortar strikes, and you lose a level. It’s not even limited to losing just one. Get a hit again, it’ll take another level from you. The only way to get those levels back is to find and kill the boss by following the bugs to his hiding spot. Unfortunately, I don’t have footage of this, nor do I know what the reward is for killing him, because by the time we found the boss by following the bugs, the circle had started encroaching, and we just wouldn’t have been able to kill him before the circle killed us. I’m not going to lie, It was pretty soul-crushing to have to just give up on those levels that he stole from us, and it really kind of doomed our run right from day one.

There are certainly more of these that I still haven’t encountered, like the forest of corruption, the madness towers, and more that we can see in the overview trailer released by FromSoftware. It’s worth mentioning as well that if you don’t like the Shifting Earth modifier that will affect the world, you can use the bed in the Roundtable Hold to sleep to either remove the modifier or have it be replaced by something else.

As devastating as some of these modifiers can be, I’m nonetheless eagerly anticipating seeing more of them. They inject a healthy level of chaos into what otherwise might start to feel very routine, and led to some great emergent moments with high emotion between me and my squadmates as we raced to escape the crater, or panicked at an unexpected ambush, or felt true despair as we realized the levels that were stolen from us were gone forever. Moments like these are the heart of any good roguelite, and hopefully Nightreign is able to keep them coming at a steady pace.

Max Changing Its Name Back to HBO Max, Warner Bros. Discovery Announces

Max is changing its name back to HBO Max from this summer, Warner Bros. Discovery has announced.

The surprise rebrand follows the change of HBO Max into Max only two years ago. Max, soon to be HBO Max, is the streaming platform home to the likes of Game of Thrones, The White Lotus, The Sopranos, The Last of Us, House of the Dragon, and The Penguin.

Announcing the change, WBD said its streaming business had turned around its profitability by almost $3 billion in just two years, and was “scaling” globally with 22 million subscribers added over the past year. It has a “clear path” to over 150 million by the end of 2026, WBD said.

“This is thanks to an enormous amount of hard work, investment and re-focusing the strategy on the programming that is working best like HBO, recent box-office movies, docuseries, certain reality series, and Max and local originals, and de-prioritizing other genres that drive less engagement or acquisition,” the company continues.

So why go back to HBO Max now? Because people associate the HBO brand with quality content that is unique and “worth paying for,” and that’s what people want now, more than ever, amid the sea of overwhelming streaming options.

“This evolution has also been influenced by changing consumer needs, and the fact that no consumer today is saying they want more content, but most consumers are saying they want better content,” WBD said.

“With other services filling the more basic needs with volume, WBD has clearly distinguished itself through its quality and distinct stories, and no brand has done that better and more consistently over 50+ years than HBO.

“Returning the HBO brand into HBO Max will further drive the service forward and amplify the uniqueness that subscribers can expect from the offering. It is also a testament to WBD’s willingness to keep boldly iterating its strategy and approach – leaning heavily on consumer data and insights – to best position itself for success.”

David Zaslav, President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, said: “The powerful growth we have seen in our global streaming service is built around the quality of our programming. Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead.”

JB Perrette, President and CEO of Streaming, added: “We will continue to focus on what makes us unique – not everything for everyone in a household, but something distinct and great for adults and families. It’s really not subjective, not even controversial – our programming just hits different.”

And Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, said: “With the course we are on and strong momentum we are enjoying, we believe HBO Max far better represents our current consumer proposition. And it clearly states our implicit promise to deliver content that is recognized as unique and, to steal a line we always said at HBO, worth paying for.”

Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat Has a 'Significant Impact' on System Resources, Say Tech Experts, as Final Specs Revealed

The tech experts at Digital Foundry have revealed the final tech specs for Nintendo Switch 2, and with it claimed that the GameChat feature has a "significant impact" on system resources to the point where developers are said to be concerned.

During last month’s Nintendo Direct, Nintendo revealed the Switch 2’s GameChat functionality, triggered by a press of the C button on the new Joy-Con.

Players can watch each other enjoying the same or different titles and, with the help of a camera, even see each other. It's made all the easier by a built-in microphone that is shown to be relatively reliable regardless of each player's gaming environment. The C button's chat menu aims to be an all-in-one multiplayer feature that could result in Nintendo's most successful online push in decades.

Digital Foundry said Nintendo provides developers with a GameChat testing tool that simulates API latency and L3 cache misses that the real world GameChat system incurs on the system. This means developers can test this without needing active GameChat sessions running.

DF is now left wondering whether game performance for the end user is impacted by having GameChat on or off. If GameChat resources are within the system allocation, it shouldn't make any difference. However, given Nintendo provides GameChat emulation tools, the suggestion is there is a hit of some description that developers need to test for.

As Digital Foundry put it: "We'll be interested to see how GameChat may (or may not) impact game performance as this does seem to be an area of developer concern." We won’t know for sure until Switch 2 comes out on June 5.

Meanwhile, Digital Foundry revealed the Switch 2 final tech specs. Switch 2 Memory System Reservation is 3GB, with 9GB available for games. For context, the Switch 2 has 0.8GB Memory System Reservation and 3.2GB available for games. That’s a significant chunk of the Switch 2’s resources that games do not get. As with all consoles, Switch 2 developers don't get access to the full GPU resources, with some reserved by the system.

Switch 2 features a 7.9-inch wide color gamut LCD screen that is capable of outputting at 1080p (1920x1080). This is a big upgrade from Switch 1's 6.2-inch screen, the Switch OLED's 7-inch screen, and the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch screen.

There is also support for HDR10 and VRR up to 120 Hz, which means games can jump up to 120fps if they and your setup allow it.

Slotting the Switch 2 to its new dock will allow games to be played in 4K (3840x2160) at 60fps or 1080p/1440p (1920x1080/2560x1440) at 120fps. We know these higher-end graphics are made possible by a "custom processor made by NVIDIA."

Digital Foundry's specs reveal, which is well worth a read, reveals much more.

Clair Obscur Studio Confirms It's Working On an Official Esquie Plushie, Warns Against Potential Scams

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has many memorable characters, but few might inspire as much joy as Esquie, the game's lovable giant pal who might as well be a mascot character. The studio is warning against issues with fake merch sales around him, but also teasing an official plush Esquie that's in the works.

In a post on X/Twitter from the official Expedition 33 account, Sandfall Interactive said it has seen a number of "suspicious" websites pop up selling Esquie plushies.

"To be clear: any third-party websites selling Esquie plushies are NOT officially licensed," the studio said. "Many of them are using AI-generated artwork to advertise, and we strongly recommend against purchasing from these sources. They could be scams."

To balance out the wheee with the whooo though, as Esquie might say, Sandfall confirms it is looking into making official Esquie plushies, and wants to get them out as soon as it can. "In the meantime, please be patient — and don’t get scammed!" the studio said.

Those who have played the game probably get why an Esquie plushie might be in high demand. If you haven't gone on Expedition 33 yet, Esquie is a giant helper you meet in Act 1 of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 who becomes both a traveling companion and overworld travel method. He's got the same vibe as Big Hero 6's Baymax.

With that in mind, it's easy to see how an Esquie plush might garner some interest, so it's good to know Sandfall is working on an official solution. A cursory search on Google pulled up both an unofficial site, and a few threads asking about Esquie plush peddlers. If you want the real thing from Sandfall and Kepler, you'll have to wait a bit. No news on whether the real-life plushie will also be filled with wine, though.

Last week, Sandfall Interactive released patch 1.2.3 for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, addressing some balance tweaks around Maelle's Stendhal ability. French President Emmanuel Macron also recently praised the game, calling its developers a "shining example of French audacity and creativity."

Debut Ironheart Trailer Shows Riri Williams Smashing A Truck, and The Hood — Who She Definitely Shouldn't Trust

Marvel has released the debut trailer for Ironheart, the upcoming MCU Disney+ show.

Ironheart sees Dominique Thorne reprise her role as the armored superhero from 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, with Anthony Ramos as Parker Robbins / The Hood. The trailer, below, gives us a good idea of what to expect from the mini-series, which focuses on Riri Williams’ journey to become an iconic superhero in her own right after playing a supporting role in the MCU so far.

Parker Robbins / The Hood is positioned as a character who initially wants to help Williams realize her potential, but it’s clear there’s more to this character than meets the eye.

Ironheart, from executive producer Ryan Coogler, launches with a three-episode premiere on June 24 at 6pm PT/ 9pm ET, on Disney+.

Williams calls her involvement in the events of Wakanda Forever an “internship abroad.” She’s booted out of MIT, which leads to The Hood’s play: "anyone who has accomplished anything has to do questionable things. Are you in or out?"

We see Ironheart suit up, fly about, then in an action scene, ground herself before punching a truck, which flies over her head in dramatic fashion.

Marvel has a number of shows coming up. Also spinning off the Black Panther franchise is Eyes of Wakanda, a four-episode animated mini-series about the Hatut Zaraze, an elite group of Wakandan warriors. That series will launch on August 6.

Rounding out the television front is another four-episode animated miniseries, Marvel Zombies, and the live-action series Wonder Man. Marvel Zombies will premiere on October 3, and takes place in the zombie reality depicted in the first season of What If…?. The series will feature many MCU cast members reprising their roles, such as Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Awkwafina as Katy Chen, Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan.

Wonder Man, set to premiere in December 2025, will star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, a superpowered actor who is a recurring member of the Avengers in the comics. Ben Kingsley will be returning as Trevor Slattery, the actor who played the fake Mandarin in Iron Man 3, and Demetrius Grosse is set to play the Grim Reaper, Simon’s villainous brother.

FBC: Firebreak is The Weirdest Shooter You’ll Play All Year

Stick with me, here. Mere hours after first playing FBC: Firebreak, I found myself mouth-to-dough with a delicious cream cake. Unfortunately, because I’m a clumsy bastard who can’t be trusted with anything nice, a dollop of that cream landed directly into my blood orange cocktail and melted into it. I stared at the swirling momentarily and found myself transported back into the halls of the Federal Bureau of Control as I fired white hot bursts of liquid into the glowing red enemies that stalk its hallways. It’s this sort of twisted leap of logic that a trip to Remedy’s headquarters does to a brain.

Remedy is a studio with an eclectic library of games – some are horror, others sci-fi or neo-noir detective fiction. But what I've always loved about the Alan Wake and Max Payne developer is that it's unafraid to be silly. Firebreak, the studio’s latest project and its first foray into both first-person shooting and co-op multiplayer action, is very silly. Over the course of a two-hour play session, I found time to both obliterate everyone around me with a murderous garden gnome and wage war against a 30-foot-high sticky note behemoth. All this was enough for me to be convinced that if anyone can stand out in the crowded, often very serious online shooter space, it's Remedy and its unique desire to inject the weird into everything it makes.

Set six years after the events of Remedy’s 2019 single-player hit, Control, Firebreak’s setting of The Oldest House will be familiar to those who played through Jesse Faden’s story. Both the broad strokes and little touches remain, whether it be the severity of its brutalist pillars and walls or the Finnish folk music spilling out of its bathroom speakers, making for a comforting, if slightly uneasy, return. Firebreak tasks squads with reentering this X-Files-like government building to deal with localised outbreaks of the Hiss, Control’s inter-dimensional threat that embodies living and non-living entities alike. You, and up to two teammates, are essentially this universe's Ghostbusters, just armed with double-barreled shotguns instead of proton packs. The twist, though, is that here, crossing the streams is heavily encouraged.

Let me explain. Outside of your standard arsenal of pistols and rifles, you can pick from three different “kits”. Essentially Firebreak’s classes, each kit aids the team in different ways, both offensively and defensively. The Fix Kit, for example, allows you to quickly mend machines such as ammo stations and healing showers (FBC employees top up their HP by getting drenched with water – I did say this was all very silly). The Splash Kit, meanwhile, arms you with a hydro cannon that can both restore teammates’ health bars and douse enemies in water. And finally, the Jump Kit comes with a short-range Electro-Kinetic Charge Impactor that can shock foes and stop them in their tracks. Each kit has its individual uses, but when combined, they conjure up devastating results – you can likely already imagine what sending a high-voltage bolt of electricity into a soaking wet mob might achieve.

Although the whole game is playable solo, it’s clear that the intention is for three players to come together.

Teamwork and communication are key in Firebreak, then, because although the whole game is playable solo, it’s clear that the intention is for three players to come together, especially when things really start to get hectic. All of FBC: Firebreak’s missions (known as jobs) ultimately use the same structure: get in, achieve your objectives, and then return to the elevator you entered the level in. My first assignment was simple: my team had to fix three faulty heat fans in the building’s furnace while dealing with waves of enemies before swiftly retreating back to the safety of the elevator.

But as I said earlier, things get hectic. Up next was “Paper Chase”, a mission involving the destruction of thousands of scattered sticky notes, and it was an entirely different experience from our breezy fan maintenance job. Only once the target number of notes had been removed from the office floors and walls could we exit the area and claim victory. The problem was that hordes of Hiss would turn up at regular intervals to halt our progress, and the notes themselves could attach themselves to us and inflict damage. Never has the phrase “a death by a thousand paper cuts” been more appropriate. The evil notes could be destroyed by a simple melee attack, but they were much more efficiently disintegrated with a quick soak and spark - another smart use of Firebreak’s elemental kit systems. That kind of multiplayer synergy is supported by solid gunplay, so there’s always something you can do without relying on another player. I quickly honed in on the machine gun as my tool of destruction – I enjoyed mowing down glowing red ghouls, which satisfyingly burst into the oily haze synonymous with Control.

The third mission took place in The Oldest House’s Black Rock Quarry and required the most teamwork of the bunch. Shooting squelchy leeches from the cavernous walls grants you lethal radioactive pearls that need to be contained in a shuttle. Safely locked up, these can then be moved along a track to deeper areas of the quarry. It was the most challenging mission of the set, and really did stress the need for good communication. The need to take regular shower breaks to rinse off the radiation, droves of enemies, and instakill astral spike entities all hindered our progress. I did still manage to have fun, even if it got incredibly hectic at times.

While I’m reasonably satisfied by the mission objectives, I do find myself torn when it comes to Firebreak’s approach to map design. In Control, The Oldest House was a devilish labyrinth of morphing corridors and secrets, but the map layouts here are less complicated. This is probably for the better, as tighter, more linear spaces make for a kinder area to navigate in first-person (even if with no minimap me and my teammates still got occasionally lost, despite their small size). But I do feel like the Federal Bureau of Control’s headquarters has lost some of its unpredictable charm as a result. Don’t necessarily go in here expecting something as wondrous as the Ashtray Maze, for example. Instead you’ll find simpler, more grounded surroundings.

These missions may sound straightforward, but after completing them you unlock clearance levels for each, which add further objectives and result in much lengthier excursions. The maps open up on subsequent revisits, adding extra chambers of activity as well as more complex objectives and foes. Just like in Control, bosses gate your progress through certain areas, effectively causing a lockdown. These range from bullet sponges with drastically larger health bars to more interesting beasts like a giant sticky note monstrosity that slammed my team with its giant yellow fists. I found the latter far more exciting, as taking it down required the elements of communication and teamwork that I enjoy in co-op shooters. Part puzzle boss, part damage dealing, it reminded me of the final stretches of some of Space Marine 2's expeditions, where your brawn and shooter skills must occasionally make way for pockets of brainwork.

These monsters made out of everyday objects are some of my favourite elements of Control, so I'm glad to see some of that weirdness make its way over here. This is further explored through randomly spawning corrupted items, none of which I sadly saw during my playtime, but they remain a tantalising prospect (a rubber duck that can redirect all enemies your away so others can focus on objectives did spawn, but due to its small size none of us found it - an unfortunate instance of readability that the development team assured us they're looking into fixing before launch). Another item detailed to me was a large set of traffic lights, where being caught in its red gaze can result in a heavy amount of damage coming your way, which effectively brings a dash of Squid Game colour to the otherwise grey brutalist surroundings.

There are strong foundations here, but my small number of concerns all boil down to readability.

It's these unreal Remedy flourishes that give Firebreak a chance to stand out from the crowd. They are further explored in your loadouts, too; completing missions grants you unlock tokens that can be used to acquire suitably zany new tools. These include ultimate abilities such as the Splash Kit’s Teapot that burns up any enemy unfortunate enough to collide with its superheated globules. Then there’s the Jump Kit’s erratic garden gnome, which conjures up a destructive electrical storm that strikes anyone in its zone. That ability, in particular, ensured chaos often reigned during my time with Firebreak. Most of the time it's good fun, with swarms of enemies destroyed through chaotic scrambling and juggling of abilities. Sometimes, though, there's just too much going on on screen and it all becomes a bit indecipherable.

There are strong foundations here, but my small number of concerns all boil down to readability. Sometimes it’s unclear where you should be heading on the maps. Other times it’s working out how to avoid hosing your allies down with friendly fire damage, or picking out who exactly the boss is amidst a horde. There’s simply a lot going on here, and with bursts of colour popping off everywhere, it can be a little overwhelming when trying to play tactically and precisely. This is a concern I’m assured that the Firebreak devs are well aware of, though, and they plan to make active improvements to the shooter’s overall readability before its June 17 launch.

Firebreak will feature five jobs at release, with two more promised before the end of 2025. That may not seem like very many, but game director Mike Kayatta tells me that Remedy considers them “more like game modes” than missions. I can see that, with each offering replayability and depth due to their multiple clearance levels and evolving objectives. Combined with the fact that it will cost $39.99 / €39.99 / £32.99 (as well as being included on both Game Pass and PlayStation Plus), I think there’s enough value in here to keep both Control veterans and new fans looking for a fun shooter entertained for many hours.

The always online co-op shooter road is a daunting one for any developer to choose to walk right now. But after playing Firebreak, I’m confident that there’s a strong foundation here, and when combined with injections of Remedy’s unique quirky personality I think it can carve its own niche in the space. Much like that dollop of cream carved its own space in my cocktail. I still drank it all.

'FOMO Has Infected Modern Games,' Says Remedy Director of FBC: Firebreak

Mike Kayatta, game director of Remedy’s upcoming FBC: Firebreak, supports the notion of making games "that respect player time and don't try to overcharge."

This suggestion comes in the wake of a flurry of recent games successfully being released at a lower price point than we’ve come to expect. These include two of the most critically acclaimed titles of the year so far, Split Fiction and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which have sold over 4 million and 2 million copies respectively so far this year.

It’s a pattern that both Mafia: The Old Country – recently revealed to cost $50 when it launches on August 8 – and FBC: Firebreak will be hoping to continue.

Launching on June 17, 2025 and costing $39.99/£32.99 (as well as on both Game Pass and PS Plus), Firebreak is looking towards this newly emerging mid-tier space between wildly budgeted AAA games and indies to find its success. It’s a notion that Kayatta explained to IGN:

I read somebody describe this recently in a very eloquent way as game developers building cathedrals competing to build these more and more complex, beautiful, expensive things," Kayatta said.

“And it's gotten to the point where you've got a lot of games that cost half a billion dollars to make. And then, of course, when you get into marketing and promotion, I mean, the amount of money involved is staggering. And that can produce some incredible, incredible experiences that I am very thankful exist, but only some of those can exist, and everyone can't compete in that space."

Kayatta continued: “And then on the other side, you've got all of these incredible indie developers. Everything from Inscryption to Stardew Valley to Blue Prince feel like they come out of nowhere and light the world on fire. But then I do think we're seeing that emergence of that middle ground now of, it's messy to call it AA, right? But it is something kind of new. It’s not quite God of War Ragnarok or GTA 6, but it's also something more than a Slay the Spire. And that's not a comment on either end of those spectrums. Those are fantastic games, but it does feel like there is something kind of emerging in the middle, at least to me.

"If it's the future, I'm not sure. I wouldn't say in the sense that it implies that that's where all games need to go, but this idea of a responsible team size, a responsible budget, a responsible amount of time to develop a game, just get it out there, make something that respects player time and don't try to overcharge and don't try to be greedy with time. I do think there's a space for it, and we're trying to touch on it with this game.”

That respect for players’ time and money goes hand-in-hand with Remedy’s all-in-one approach to Firebreak. This is a game you pay once for and get everything for that $40. The idea of a free-to-play model was something never even entertained by the team.

“A lot of that has to do with reducing FOMO (the fear of missing out), which I think has kind of infected a lot of modern games," stated Kayatta.

“And by the way, that's not a blanket statement. I think a lot of games are able to use FOMO to be exciting. So I'm just saying that for this game in particular, it didn't work for us, but it's not just about monetization, I think it's about the value that the game has. So one example would be, I don't know if you've ever played Path of Exile, for example, and you open up that skill tree and you see 10,000 things that you're going to be able to do.

“And for a type of person, they're really excited, like look at that depth and look how many hours I've got, all these other things. And then for another type of person, they're looking at that saying, 'I will never extract the value from this game even if I want to.' And even if those devs, and this is no longer a comment about Path of Exile, which I love by the way, even if you say, 'Well, but you don't have to interact with those systems, you can still have fun.' That may be true, but the minute you see those systems exist, you're instantly put into that frame of reference where you say, 'There is something that I'm not getting from this, and that just feels bad.'

"So for us, we wanted to make sure that the game, both from the way we monetize it, we don't do daily check-ins, timed battle passes, all that other stuff that dictates your time. There's that side.

“But the other side, too, is that we don't want to present a game that feels so complex, like, oh, if you don't come back and do six more sessions, you're not going to be able to do this, and progression's important. You feel like you're accomplishing something over time. So we definitely have that, and we definitely wanted to have a strong meta game, but we also just wanted to keep things feeling like, you know what? I get as much out of this as I want at any given time, and at any given moment, I have the complete experience.”

Firebreak will be hoping to capture both fans of Remedy’s uniquely weird work and fans of co-op shooters alike when it launches on June 17. For an in-depth look at how it’s shaping up, check out our hands-on preview.

The 10 Best Final Destination Deaths

Warning: Gross and hilarious death scene images/talk follows!

After a lengthy 14-year hiatus, the Final Destination franchise is finally coming back to theaters with a sixth installment, Final Destination: Bloodlines. The basic formula for this series has always involved someone having had a premonition that leads a group of people to narrowly avoid dying in a disaster – except by doing so, they’re defying the will of Death itself, who’s none too happy as a result and retaliates by then killing each of these survivors off, one by one, in particularly elaborate, brutal – and often darkly funny – ways. So as we get ready for Bloodlines, let’s look back at the first five films and determine which of these crazy demises stand out the most.

First though, some quick ground rules. We’ve decided that the mass casualty premonitions that begin each movie – and, in the third and fourth films, even happen again in the third act – don’t count for our purposes here. Don’t get us wrong: They’re awesome in general and feature spectacular deaths, and wow, that car pile-up that begins the second movie absolutely has us all forever fearing a “Final Destination incident” while driving. But still, in the context of this series, they’re not “real” deaths, since most of the characters we see meet their end in these premonitions will go on to actually die in totally different ways, after first surviving whatever disaster is foretold in these sequences.

But don’t worry, there’s all kinds of gnarly deaths to still sort through... Here’s our look at the 10 best Final Destination deaths so far!

10. Truck Drag & Burn

Character, Movie: Carter, The Final Destination (2009)

The fourth film in the franchise is easily the weakest installment for many reasons, including when it comes to the deaths. Some of them are fun conceptually, but notably lessened by the very fake and often goofy looking, yet very in your face, digital effects used to enhance them, which were meant to accentuate the movie’s 3D gimmick at the time - which isn’t even there to help while watching at home.

However, one highlight death in the film is Carter, who you figured the filmmakers would go big on after making sure we knew he was an absolute piece of trash racist, sporting a swastika tattoo, who’s in the middle of doing horrible racist stuff when he gets dragged behind his own truck and set on fire. Then his truck blows up, blowing Carter up with it - sending both gratuitous 3D debris and Carter’s stupid head flying.

Plus, it is a funny cut from that flaming Carter head to a clip from the 1947 Tex Avery cartoon “Red Hot Rangers,” albeit with some notably updated dialogue.

9. One Sharp Thing After Another

Character, Movie: Ms. Lewton, Final Destination (2000)

We all know spilling liquid on your computer is bad, but high school teacher Ms. Lewton finds out just how bad when her computer full-on explodes after some booze is spilled into it, sending a shard of the monitor into her neck. It seems like that could have been enough to kill her on its own, but no, Death wants this one to last, as soon enough the mixture of sparks and spilled alcohol causes a fire to break out in her house, even as she’s still bleeding out. And then her stove blows up for good measure.

Things take a further turn for the grimly humorous when Ms. Lewton’s desperate attempt to grab a dishcloth to put pressure on her wound ends up dragging her snazzy set of butcher knives down off her counter, one of which flies straight into her body. But even worse, which is to say even funnier, since this is Final Destination, is when Devon Sawa’s Alex attempts to pull out the knife, only for a chair to fall and slam that sucker even further into Ms. Lewton, delivering the literal death blow. Come on, Alex, Death obviously put that knife there for a reason!

8. I Crush Your Head

Character, Movie: Lewis, Final Destination 3 (2006)

In Final Destination 3, our heroine Wendy realizes photos she took of her fellow roller coaster crash survivors contain clues to how they will die, and in the case of football player Lewis, that seems to involve two swords. The super jock’s ensuing death scene is an amusingly testosterone-filled one, as he and his teammates are just so damn excited to be working out. The big payoff stands out, as it turns out the swords themselves – dangerously hanging overhead and, inevitably, falling – don’t cut Lewis, but they do cut the ropes on his weight machine without him realizing it. How can you not enjoy someone’s head being smashed to smithereens right as they’re screaming “I just win!”?

And, hey, at least Lewis died so quickly he didn’t even realize he’d just lost.

7. Chop Top

Character, Movie: Frankie, Final Destination 3 (2006)

Frankie Cheeks is Final Destination 3’s designated overt slimeball and not just because his name is Frankie Cheeks and he refers to himself in the third person. See, this guy’s also a sex pest who keeps being gross with girls from the high school he graduated from a couple of years ago.

What’s notable about Frankie’s death is there’s a huge misdirection in the scene, because Final Destination 3’s main characters, Wendy and Kevin, naturally think death is coming for them when a driverless truck careens down a hill and towards their car, which is stuck in the middle of a fast food drive-thru line. Except what neither they, nor those of us watching, know at first is that the douchebag in the car in front of them, who flips them off as they desperately try to escape, is none other than Frankie.

Even before it’s clear who it is – and it briefly seems like some random dude got Final Destination-ed – his death is pretty great, as the truck’s engine shoots out in the collision that occurs, flying into the back of his head and sawing into him with a fan. Then, as it becomes clear this particular victim is sleazy Frankie Cheeks, we get an exclamation point in the form of seeing the entire back of his head had been torn off.

6. Airbag Meets Pipe

Character, Movie: Kat, Final Destination 2 (2003)

Where sometimes we see people narrowly avoid several different ways they could die before something else finally gets them, Final Destination 2 had a clever swerve on that play out with businesswoman Kat when her tire blows out, causing her to crash and sending a decidedly sharpened pipe tearing into her car and going right through her seat’s headrest - except it just misses her! However, when rescue workers attempt to free her, they accidentally activate her car’s airbag, shoving Kat’s head back violently. And that’s when the force of being lurched back so quickly causes that very same pipe to stab her through the head.

This one stands out for how sudden it is, and also how, technically, the actual moment of death is off camera, obstructed by the airbag, while still using a lethal instrument that was very much set up already. This time, our expectations were that Kat had managed to avoid that particular method of elimination and something else would finish her off, but it seems like Death really, really wanted to use that pipe to get her!

5. Seeing All

Character, Movie: Olivia, Final Destination 5 (2011)

Getting LASIK surgery can be an inherently nerve-racking experience, so of course Final Destination had to make sure it went as terribly as possible – and, okay, maybe beyond possible — in the fifth film. This is one of the most notable deaths in terms of escalation, as so many awful things happen to Olivia in literally the final minute of her life. First, the LASIK machine malfunctions, horrifically cutting into not only her eye but her skin. Then, when she actually manages to escape that, she slips and falls, crashing through a window and hurtling several stories down, smashing into a car. That fall is what kills her, except Death, ever the impish prankster, then has one of her eyes fully pop out from the impact and roll into the street… and then it gets run over by a passing car!

Sorry to say, but you probably should have just stuck with wearing glasses, Olivia.

4. Tanning Bed Flambé

Character, Movie: Ashley and Ashlyn, Final Destination 3 (2006)

Most of the time, even folks who were sitting next to each other during a disaster premonition in these movies still die separately, but Death made an exception for besties Ashley and Ashlyn in Final Destination 3, who die as they lived - doing everything together. At least they got a nice little singalong right before things went horribly wrong!

This death is actually one of the more prolonged and painful ones in the series, as these two poor girls find themselves trapped in rapidly overheating tanning beds, causing their skin to burn while glass shatters in their face… before they become engulfed in flames.

It’s a memorable sequence to be sure, and one also given a dark and funny punch line with the hard cut from their twin flaming tanning beds to their twin coffins.

3. The Bus Hit

Character, Movie: Terry, Final Destination (2000)

There’s absolutely no way we can skip this death from the first movie, both because of how fun and memorable it is in its own right, thanks to the sheer surprise of it at the time, but also for how iconic it’s become to the series. Terry declares how she’s going to move on from the plane crash she and the others survived, only to find out Death has other plans when she steps off a curb and gets pulverized out of nowhere by a passing bus.

Even as the series would move into far more elaborate and gory setpieces in the sequels, Terry’s death stands out as the first time a Final Destination audience found themselves laughing and cheering for one of the deaths – yeah, yeah, we’re all sickos! – so much so that the filmmakers needed to re-edit the aftermath of the moment to account for how well it went over in test screenings, since people were otherwise missing hearing the dialogue in the next scene.

This quickly became such a signature death for the series that it is continually referenced, including providing the conclusion to the fourth movie’s “greatest hits” opening credits as well as that same movie outright repeating this death, albeit with a line of dialogue right before to let the audience know the filmmakers were well aware they were repeating themselves. Even 25 years later, the trailer for Final Destination: Bloodlines ends with a callback to this moment.

Terry, you will never be forgotten!

2. Glass Pane Flattening

Character, Movie: Tim, Final Destination 2 (2003)

The Final Destination filmmakers quickly realized they could have a lot of fun by presenting a ton of ways someone could die and then use that as a fake-out for what was going to actually occur. And few sequences do that better or provide a more amazing crescendo than what happens to young Tim in Final Destination 2, whose trip to the dentist is filled with lethal possibilities.

It starts with pigeons that apparently violently slam into the dentist’s window on a regular basis. That should be a hard pass for any potential patient! Tim somehow makes it out of this death trap, even after a near suffocation, only to instantly pull a “I see pigeons, I run at pigeons!” move outside… which then results in a giant dangling pane of glass that was established earlier just absolutely obliterating the kid!

This death is pure Looney Tunes in a gloriously bloody, Final Destination way. I mean, come on, Tim gets flattened like he’s Wile E. Coyote! Except, unfortunately, he’s not getting up from this one, giving both Death itself and those pigeons an absolute victory the Road Runner can’t claim.

1. The Human Pretzel

Character, Movie: Candice, Final Destination 5 (2011)

This sequence in Final Destination 5 featuring gymnast Candice is another where a lot of the initial excitement comes from first establishing the many ways we see she could meet her demise. A huge air conditioning unit threatening to collapse… a fallen screw on the balance beams ready to be stepped on… an exposed wire with water dripping onto it... Another loose screw on the uneven bars (seriously, this place really needs to tighten their screws better!)...

However, what’s so interesting about the payoff here is that ultimately Candice’s death could be described, in the simplest turns, as taking a bad fall, which doesn’t sound very notable for a Final Destination death.

BUT. WHAT. A. FALL.

Just as she’s doing her routine on the uneven bars, a fellow gymnast steps on that errant screw, knocks over a bowl of that, um, gymnast chalk dust stuff – sorry, guys, we’re generally not gymnasts here at IGN – and blinds Candice, just as she spins into the air and BAM…

One instantly snapped spine later and Candice has provided one of the wildest visuals in the history of Final Destination deaths, which is saying something!

Sony Considering Price Rises Amid $685 Million Impact on Its Business From Tariffs — Could the Cost of PS5 Go Up?

Sony has said it is considering price rises in response to the huge impact of tariffs on its business.

The Japanese hardware and software company reported its financial results for the year ending March 2025, and in an investor-focused Q&A session that followed, its executives discussed the impact of Trump’s tariffs.

Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao said tariffs will have a 100 billion yen (approx. $685 million) impact on Sony, assuming the tariffs already announced remain. Tariffs impact Sony because of its heavy involvement in hardware manufacturing, which of course includes video game consoles such as the PlayStation 5.

Tao then suggested Sony is considering passing some of the cost on to the price of its hardware, which would potentially include the PS5 itself.

“In terms of the tariff, we are not just simply calculating the simple tariff to come up with 100 billion yen, but thinking about the currently available information, and also looking at the market trend, we may pass on to the price, and also shipment allocation,” Tao said, as translated live during the investor webcast.

“So we are taking different measures in managing to come up to the 100 billion yen impact.”

Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki spoke about PlayStation specifically, saying Sony is considering making consoles in the U.S. to avoid the tariffs.

“These hardware of course can be produced locally,” Totoki said. “I think that would be an efficient strategy. But PS5 is being manufactured in many areas. Whether it’s going to be manufactured in the U.S. or not, it needs to be considered going forward. We are not in such a critical situation.”

Analysts have told IGN that they expect Sony to follow Nintendo and Microsoft’s lead and make the jump to $80 games. Could the PS5 family of consoles also see a price rise? Most expect the PS5 Pro in particular to see a jump, something that has caused some to rush out and buy one before Sony makes an announcement.

Daniel Ahmad, director of research and insights at Niko Partners, told IGN that Sony had just raised its console prices in certain regions, but the U.S. might be next.

“Sony has raised the price of its console multiple times outside the U.S.,” he said. “There is a reluctance from both Sony and Microsoft to raise prices in the U.S. given the size and importance of the market when it comes to console sales. That being said, we would not be surprised to see Sony follow suit with price increases on the PS5 in the U.S.”

James McWhirter, senior analyst at Omdia, added. “PS5 hardware is predominantly manufactured in China, exposing Sony's supply chain to greater risk from tariffs originating from the U.S. “Yet what we consistently observe in the console market is that up to half of consoles are typically sold during Q4, the final quarter of the year. This bought both Microsoft and Sony more time to rely on existing inventories. In 2019, consoles were granted an exemption from tariffs on goods from China, but this ruling did not come into effect until August.

“With Microsoft having blinked first with price readjustments this week, it now opens the door for Sony to follow with PS5. This is going to be a particularly tough decision in the U.S., the world's largest console market, which has historically been spared — save for PS5 Digital rising by $50 in late 2023.”

Hogwarts Legacy Switch 1 Players Can Upgrade For $10 To Get Better Graphics And No Loading Screens on Switch 2

The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Hogwarts Legacy will include sharper visuals, faster loading times, and make use of those all-new mouse controls, too.

As demonstrated in an all-new comparisons teaser trailer, while players of the original game had to sit through loading screens when players moved in or out of Hogsmeade, the Switch 2 version enables players to transition seamlessly from area to area.

That's not all, either. Playing on the Nintendo Switch 2 also boosts frame rate, textures, shadows, and even the color saturation of Hogwarts and its surroundings — you can see it for yourself in the trailer below:

As for mouse controls? We're intrigued, too. For now, though, developer Warner Bros. isn't ready to expand on that, but we wonder if the new mouse functionality could be used while spell-casting perhaps.

Much like other Switch 1 games, players with Hogwarts Legacy on the OG system will be able to upgrade to the new, improved version for $10.

Hogwarts Legacy is an immersive, action, open-world role-playing-game set in the 1800s wizarding world. Beginning as a fifth year, players embark on a journey through new and familiar locations, explore and discover magical beasts, craft potions, master spell casting, upgrade talents, and customize their character to become the witch or wizard they've always wanted to be. It's coming to Nintendo Switch 2 the same day the console releases, June 5.

We had an amazing time with Hogwarts Legacy, awarding it 9/10 in the IGN Hogwart's Legacy review, writing: "in almost every way, Hogwarts Legacy is the Harry Potter RPG [we've] always wanted to play."

Deals For Today: A Great Deal On Samsung Galaxy S25 And MTG FF Preorder Is Still Live

I love getting a new phone, but what if you could get the latest Samsung flagship with double the storage and a $50 Amazon gift card at no extra charge?

Welcome to today's deals, everyone. I am all over bargains this morning, including some cool preorders that are still live thanks to Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy Starter Kit and Bundle.

TL;DR: Deals For Today

How about 8 Xbox Game Studios Steam Keys for $10? Humble has you covered. How about 15% off a Nvidia RTX 4070Ti prebuilt gaming PC to play them all on too?

I've even got a solid way to stay hydrated on filtered water with a cheeky $30 discount thanks to Dreo. You'll need a good fan to keep you cool this summer too, so I've found $10 off one of the best Pedestal Fans I've used for a while.

Everyone loves Squishmallows, every plushy or teddy bear should feel this soft. There's up to 76% off them right now on Woot, so there's no excuses this time.

Played Split Fiction yet? It's just got it's first discount for a PS5 physical copy over on Amazon. Don't want to play games? No worries, watch one of the best Anime movies of all time with an awesome steelbook in 4K instead. Of course, we're talking about the cult classic, Akira.

Don't bother cleaning up before putting your feet up either, there's 20% off one of the best robot vac and mop right now too. Let's get into it:

Prismatic Evolutions Surprise Box

This was nearly $90 earlier this week, and it's still at a ridiculous price. The thing is, people are buying Prismatic Evolutions Suprise Boxes at multiple times their MSRP.

This is one of the cheapest prices that's been live at Amazon. So if you wanted to buy one, now is likely a good time, especially since $59.99 now seems to be the market price at the very least.

More Pokémon TCG Restocks

All the products in this caurosel are sold and shipped by Amazon, and there's some cool products in here including changes at Sword and Shield era chase cards in the Mimikyu ex Box and some lower priced Elite Trainer Boxes, such as Shrouded Fable, that are incredibly slept on at the moment. The choice is yours, but here's some great deals on Journey Together single cards.

Journey Together Single Cards

We're seeing up to a 12% drop in Journey Together SIRs over the past couple of weeks, especially Lillie's Clefairy 184/159. Will it drop anymore?

Only time will tell, but it's on a steady downward trend, likely due to restocks and Journey Together pull rates being miles better than the likes of Prismatic Evolutions and the over saturation of Pokéball reverse holo cards.

Looking for a steal? Articuno 161/159 has dropped by nearly over 50% since launch, finding its feet at a comfy $26.97 right now. It's a gorgeous illustration rare and deserves to be in everyone's binder.

MTG Final Fantasy Starter Kit

Arguably one of the most popular boxes, the FFVII-focus starter kit features Cloud and Sephiroth decks and it's just under $20. If you was thinking about getting into Magic and have childhood trauma from swapping discs on PlayStation, this is your chance.

MTG Final Fantasy Bundle

The Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy Bundle just went up for preorder at Walmart. This collectible set includes two traditional foil extended-art cards, 16 traditional foil basic lands, 16 nonfoil basic lands, two reference cards, a sturdy card storage box, and an oversized spindown life counter.

The first wave of preorders for MTG Final Fantasy products was insane. Most products were cleared out within hours of them going live, but Wizards of the Coast seem to be ramping up production.

More MTG Preorders and Restocks

The current available products on Amazon are a mixed bag, with older products going for an absolute fortune with the $748.87 Theros Beyond Death Booster to preorders on the upcoming Edge of Eternities products, including the Collector Booster Box and Play Booster Box.

I'm really close to snapping up those Lord of the Rings sample bundles too.

MTG Final Fantasy Single Cards

Like Pokémon TCG, the savvy collectors and players will want to focus on single card prices. We're seeing a predictable climb on Kefka, Court Mage #332, with a listing starting at $68.33 at the end of May and peaking at $77.53.

It looks like it's going to settle at around the $76.02 judging off current listings, but this could rise further following the release window of MTG Final Fantasy.

Split Fiction (PS5)

Team up for an unforgettable adventure with Split Fiction for PlayStation 5, a clever co-op platformer that flips between sci-fi and fantasy worlds. Designed for split-screen gameplay, you and a partner must master new mechanics and abilities in every level, coordinating closely to survive the surprises ahead.

The story follows Mio and Zoe, reluctant allies whose bond becomes their lifeline. We loved it so much that we awarded it an Editors' Choice badge and a strong 9/10 in our review. If you're looking for your next great two-player experience, Split Fiction is a must-play.

Akira 4K Blu Ray (Steelbook)

The landmark anime classic returns with the Akira - Steelbook 4K UHD Blu-ray, delivering a stunning remaster of one of the most influential sci-fi films ever made.

Helldivers 2 PlayStation Leak Suggests Players Will Fight Against the Illuminate on Super Earth Itself Next Week — and Now Gameplay of Super Earth Mega Cities Has Leaked, Too

Eagle-eyed Helldivers 2 fans have spotted what looks like a leak from PlayStation that suggests players will end up fighting back against the Illuminate on the streets of Super Earth.

This week, developer Arrowhead launched the full Illuminate invasion, adding new enemy types in the process. The in-universe wording of the invasion suggested the Illuminate were heading straight for Super Earth, and now a leak coming out of the official Czech Republic Threads account suggests that the Illuminate will not only make it to our home planet, but we’ll have to fight them off there.

Redditor xTekshi spotted the now-deleted post, which spoke of a "Heart of Democracy" update coming on May 20. While Heart of Democracy is referenced in the official working around this week’s update, neither Sony nor Arrowhead have confirmed it in relation to a May 20 release.

Adding further fuel to the fire is the fact a May 20 release would fit with the timing of the end of the current Major Order.

Official Playstation account for the Czech Republic dropped info on the next title update.
"Heart of Democracy" - May 20th#Helldivers2 pic.twitter.com/gelJbnYMqR

— IronS1ghts (@Iron_S1ghts) May 13, 2025

This all feels pretty much inevitable, and that’s the wording Sony and Arrowhead have used for this update (“High Command believes this Fleet's ultimate objective to be the invasion of Super Earth itself” and “Battle on Super Earth is inevitable”).

So, fans think the Czech account accidentally leaked Helldivers 2’s next major update, and with it plans to fight on Super Earth itself. If true, this would be a significant upgrade for the explosive third-person action game, which currently includes alien planet maps only. Playing on Super Earth would certainly offer something different.

Warning! Spoilers for Helldivers 2 follow:

Now, in a recent development, gameplay of Super Earth Mega Cities has leaked online, via social media account IronS1ghts and their YouTube channel. The gameplay shows Super Earth as a destination in Helldivers 2. You’re able to choose from a variety of city missions, as you can on other planets (“York Supreme” is a city in North America).

On the surface we see future Earth urban areas, with the Illuminate invasion ongoing. SEAF (the equivalent of the national guard or militia) soldiers are fighting alongside the Helldivers. For me, this reminds me a lot of Halo 3: ODST, with the Covenant invading Earth.

How is this gameplay possible? Apparently the Super Earth content is in the Helldivers 2 game files already, waiting to launch.

While we wait for an official announcement, check out the details of this week’s update.

Pokémon TCG: Prismatic Evolutions Surprise Boxes Were Restocked at Amazon Today

Amazon has restocked Pokémon TCG: Prismatic Evolutions Surprise Boxes today... for $59.99. But is it worth it? Well, in the TCG community right now, you've got MSRP vigilants ($22.99), and those willing to pay at "Market Price" ($59.99).

This Surprise Box is sold and shipped by Amazon, so it's what you'd consider market price; it's just way above MSRP. Whatever side of the fence you sit on, the debate is fascinating.

Let's dig into whether it's worth paying $59.99 for this set. For starters, the box itself is nice, and it's cool to get stamped versions of the standard Eeveelution ex cards: Eevee ex, Vaporeon ex, Jolteon ex, Flareon ex, Espeon ex, Umbreon ex, Leafeon ex, Glaceon ex, or Sylveon ex.

But you also only get one per box at random, and I'm not going to give myself an anxiety attack trying to work out the odds on hunting all of these down, but that's a big bag of bones going off Amazon's pricing.

Is it a nice gift? Sure. Is it practical enough to buy a couple of boxes for just ripping open packs and hoping for your favorite Eeveelution? At $59.99... jeesh, maybe not.

Prismatic Evolution Stamped Surprise Box Cards

But still, it's been a popular pick amongst IGN's Daily Deals readers, so who am I to judge? Make your own decisions when buying, just don't say I didn't warn you.

Otherwise, you can also consider picking up the singles you might be chasing via trusted retailers like TCGPlayer. Let's explore the top Prismatic Evolutions cards available to pick up today as well.

If you're, like me, just interested in the Suprise Box for the promo cards, it might be worth just buying the cards standlone. The most expensive (of course it's Umbreon) is going for the same price as one of these boxes, with the rest coming in at well under $20.

So for the price of two to three Suprise Boxes, you can get the complete collection. If you want to rip open packs and pull these promos yourself then go for it, but it'll cost you.

Prismatic Evolution Chase Cards

Dropping over a grand on a Pokémon card sounds mental, but this Umbreon SIR has come down quite a bit after release. Sitting at $1100, that's a fall of around $500 and change.

All the other chase cards of Prismatic Evolutions have fallen to under the $500 mark, with my favorite Roaring Moon ex SIR dropping to $221 at the time of writing.

These prices may very well fall more as the year goes on and attention shifts, but these are pretty good prices considering what the bloated Pokémon card market would have you believe just a month ago.

Pokémon TCG: Best Deals Today

Pokémon TCG's Prismatic Evolutions expansion for Scarlet & Violet has been crazy popular, sending Pokémania 2025 over the edge due to tough pull rates and having few opportunities to rip the set open.

But, if you're trying to keep up with all the other Pokémon TCG without getting ripped off or left behind, here's where to start, including the latest update on what can be bought here and now from trusted retailers in the US.

Want to know more about the best single Pokémon cards out there right now? My weekly Crashes and Climbers articles do just that. Want to pay less? The Glory of Team Rocket Japanese set singles are going for great prices right now too.

Looking to preorder the new sets Destined Rivals or Black Bolt/White Flare? We've also got you covered, alongside every upcoming release for Pokémon TCG in 2025.

Dragon Quest 12 Creator Yuji Horii 'Can't Say Anything' Specific, But Wants You To Know He's 'Putting Lots of Work Into' The Secretive Sequel

Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii has confirmed Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate has not been canceled.

Dragon Quest 12 was announced as part of the series' 35th anniversary celebration back in 2021, signalling the first mainline entry since 2017's Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age. It's been pretty quiet ever since, however; the last we heard about Dragon Quest 12 was in February, when Horii broke his silence to say the development team at Square Enix is “working hard” and information about the game will be released “little by little."

And he wasn't wrong. Since then it's been complete radio silence, but in a new interview with Gamereactor, Horii has once again popped up to reassure fans everything is still on track.

"Yes, indeed, I can't say anything, I apologize," he said. "I am making it, putting lots of work into it... I can only say that the next work will be great too, [I'm] working really hard. Please look forward to it is the only thing I can say."

While perhaps not quite as reassuring as a trailer or even some screenshots, this should at least come as a relief to fans who'd worried Dragon Quest 12 might have been canceled amid restructuring at Square Enix and a lack up updates.

In May 2024 Horii noted the deaths of Dragon Quest character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama. The series’ lead producer Yu Miyake had by that point already stepped down from his position to lead Square Enix’s mobile game division.

Wait, Is That a Kid in GTA 6?

The Grand Theft Auto series does not feature kids in gameplay. It’s a golden rule for pretty much all video games that let you indiscriminately kill NPCs. Look at what happened with The Sims competitor inZoi earlier this year, when players found they were able to run over children (the developer quickly patched it out and called it a bug).

So, you can understand why a seemingly innocuous screenshot released for GTA 6 that looks like it shows a kid in-game has sparked so much speculation.

The screenshot in question is of the Grassrivers section of GTA 6 (we’ve got a whole page devoted to the area if you want to know more). If you look closely at the bottom right-hand corner of the image, below, you can make out a few people sitting at an outside table. One of these people looks a lot smaller than the other two, so much so that observers are saying it’s a child.

This detail was picked up by X / Twitter account TheGTAVerse and their post has since gone viral, picking up over 1.5 million views.

A kid spotted in #GTAVI screenshot 👀 pic.twitter.com/pGjSuNn9yt

— TheGTAVerse (@TheGTAVerse) May 12, 2025

It’s worth noting that there is a zero chance that kids will be out and about in the GTA 6 game world, because that would mean you would be able to kill them, and that is a big no-no. GTA games are famous for letting you kill pretty much anyone in all manner of over-the-top ways. From simply beating a poor NPC to death with your bare hands to landing a plane on their head, GTA 6 will no-doubt ramp up the reckless NPC destruction.

So no, this screenshot does not confirm you can kill children in GTA 6. It is a screenshot of GTA 6 over a year away from the game’s release date. It is a snapshot of the game at this moment, and nothing more.

But it is… odd to see what could be a child in a GTA 6 screenshot. If it is indeed a child. While most people do think it is a child, it could be a small adult, or there could be some sort of graphics effect at play here that makes what is an adult look smaller in this situation.

The release of GTA 6 Trailer 2 and Rockstar's accompanying info-dump has sparked all sorts of speculation about what to expect from what is sure to be the biggest video game of all time. Some GTA fans even think Liberty City may end up in GTA 6 either at launch or as post-launch DLC.

While we wait to find out, we’ve got plenty more on GTA 6, including all the details we’ve discovered so far, a roundup of 70 brand new screenshots, and the expert opinion on how GTA 6 will look on PS5 Pro.

Microsoft Raised Xbox Console and Game Prices; Analysts Say PlayStation (and Everyone Else) Could Be Next

A few weeks ago, Microsoft raised the prices of all its Xbox Series consoles and many of its accessories globally, and confirmed that some new games would cost $80 this holiday season. Just a week earlier, PlayStation similarly raised prices on consoles in some regions, and shortly before that, Nintendo bumped its Switch 2 accessory prices and announced its own first $80 game.

The tariff-induced price hikes have arrived, and if you’re watching it all unfold news story by news story, the numerous increases across seemingly everything can be dizzying to behold. So in an effort to make sense of it all in the wake of Xbox’s announcement, I chased down the usual conclave of analysts for comment on just what was going on, how expensive being a gamer is realistically going to get in the next year or so, and if the video game industry or Xbox or anyone is doomed. The good news is that none of the video games, consoles, or major platforms are going anywhere.

But the bad news is yes, we’re going to be paying a lot more for video games... and everything else.

Why is it all so dang expensive?

As usual, my first question to the analysts I spoke with was a simple one: why? Why did Microsoft raise its console and accessories prices now, and so drastically? Appropriately, the responses I got were also straightforward, and a refrain we’ve been hearing a lot lately: tariffs. It’s tariffs. Rising development and manufacturing costs, yes, but mainly tariffs, or at least the fear of them as U.S. President Donald Trump turns different tariffs for different countries on and off again.

“Microsoft's consoles are made in Asia, so seriously: who in this world can now be surprised about these price hikes?” asked Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, Inc. He added that high prices were coming, one way or another, but the recent tariff chaos in the U.S. made for good timing to announce the increase with less risk of blowback. “It was a clever move from Microsoft to use the current economic climate as a backdrop to not only push the price hikes in the U.S. but also globally. What was also clever is that they did this in one fell swoop instead of riling up fans over a longer period of time and from one territory to the next.”

Joost van Dreunen, NYU Stern professor and author of the SuperJoost Playlist newsletter, agreed with Toto’s assessment of why Microsoft raised all its prices at once, instead of doing just a few increases at a time. “Microsoft is ripping off the Band-Aid all at once rather than death by a thousand cuts. I read Microsoft's synchronized global price adjustment as a strategic recalibration in response to tariff pressures rather than incremental market testing. By implementing comprehensive increases across hardware, subscriptions, and first-party titles simultaneously, they're consolidating consumer reaction into a single news cycle while attempting to maintain their pricing position relative to competitors in what's becoming an increasingly service-oriented market where hardware is merely the entry point.”

Other analysts I spoke to also mentioned tariffs as a key factor. Manu Rosier, director of market intelligence at Newzoo, noted that the timing of the price increase well ahead of the holiday season gave Xbox’s partners time to adjust and consumers time to recalibrate expectations. And Rhys Elliott, head of market analysis at Alinea Analytics, pointed out that while digital software won’t be impacted by tariffs, the price increase to games would help offset the tariff-induced higher cost of hardware manufacturing. “If costs increase in one part of the business, balancing the books elsewhere is necessary. That’s largely what’s going on here.”

Microsoft is ripping off the Band-Aid all at once rather than death by a thousand cuts.

All that said, Piers Harding-Rolls, game research director at Ampere Analytics, pointed out the other, non-tariff factors leading to an inevitable Xbox hardware price increase:

“The macroeconomic backdrop is also a contributing factor, with higher-than-expected persistent inflation and increases in supply chain costs. The launch price of Switch 2 and Sony’s recent price hike will have made it easier to move now. It’s also not a surprise that the company waited until after the earnings announcement.

“I think Microsoft probably saw a significant gap between its entry level pricing and that of PS5 and Switch 2. Even with a 27% increase in the U.S., the cheapest Xbox Series S console is $70 cheaper than the Switch 2, so there was a lot of headroom there. The increases are generally the heaviest in the U.S. in percentage increase terms and I think we can lay that at the door of the tariff policy. Beyond the U.S., price increases in the EU and UK are generally more sedate and are more heavily focused on the cheaper consoles in the portfolio.”

Blinking Third

So, onto the bigger question: is Sony going to follow suit with price increases on PlayStation hardware, accessories, and games? Almost every analyst I asked seemed to think it was likely to do so. Elliott in particular was very confident, especially regarding the future of $80 games.

“This is just the beginning,” he said. “On top of the hardware price hikes, we’ll likely see PlayStation increasing software prices as well. With Nintendo and Xbox raising software prices, the floodgates are now open. Every publisher — first- and third-party, PC and console alike — that can charge $80 will charge it. The market will bear it. Plenty of gamers are willing to pay price points above $70, as shown by the high numbers of those willing to pay $100 for a few days’ early access (which can be in the millions for some games, as per our data).”

Elliott went on to explain that it was likely the higher ceiling would also lead to more varied pricing, with more games at $50, $60, $70, and other price points, with lower priced games able to sell more copies thanks to the perceived discount. (Notably, after we spoke with Elliott and the others, EA specifically said it would not raise prices on its games... for now.)

“Alinea data shows that when a game’s price is discounted below $50 on Steam, for example, many gamers bite the bullet and buy,” he continued. “For similar reasons, I expect to see games launching at $80, maximising launch sales among superfans, then the price decaying over time, leading to a longer tail for premium game sales. This already happens to some extent, but I think it will be an even bigger part of pricing strategies for publishers going forward.”

As for hardware, Daniel Ahmad, director of research and insights at Niko Partners, noted that Sony had just raised its console prices in certain regions, but the U.S. might be next.

James McWhirter, senior analyst at Omdia, had this observation to add. “PS5 hardware is predominantly manufactured in China, exposing Sony's supply chain to greater risk from tariffs originating from the U.S.,” he said.

We would not be surprised to see Sony follow suit with price increases on the PS5 in the U.S.

“With Microsoft having blinked first with price readjustments this week, it now opens the door for Sony to follow with PS5. This is going to be a particularly tough decision in the U.S., the world's largest console market, which has historically been spared — save for PS5 Digital rising by $50 in late 2023.”

And finally, when I asked Mat Piscatella at Circana, he was reluctant to make bold predictions about what Sony would do. But he did point back at what the Entertainment Software Association had to say about the impact of tariffs on video game prices, saying that rising prices were “the symptom, not the disease.”

And notably, while we spoke to analysts about Sony specifically, Nintendo just said it may consider “what kind of price adjustments would be appropriate” if tariffs continue to change.

Video Games Are Fine... But Are We?

In the wake of Xbox’s price increases and the growing suspicion that Sony may follow suit, some have speculated that this will cause more hurt than harm to console manufacturers. It’s all well and good to make more money off consoles and accessory sales, but what if no one can afford to buy them?

Fortunately for those multi-million dollar corporations, the analysts I spoke to don’t think this is an issue. Multiple experts pointed to Microsoft’s recent 'This Is An Xbox' campaign as evidence that Xbox, at least, has been bracing itself for this for a while. Sure, fewer people might purchase Xboxes, but the company’s console sales have been falling behind its competitors for a long time now, and it’s already been in the process of rebranding itself as a service platform rather than an experience locked to one piece of expensive hardware. Plus, there’s always GTA 6!

“Xbox hardware sales revenue has been in decline, and I see that continuing, moderated to an extent by the higher price points,” said Harding-Rolls. “We expect a boost in Q2 2026 due to the launch of GTA 6. Last quarter Microsoft gaming hardware sales fell by 6% and the prediction is for a further drop next quarter. Overall, I think higher prices have some dampening effect, but the delay of GTA 6 is probably more significant in terms of 2025 performance.”

The error bars on any forecast are bigger now than they've ever been given the uncertainty in the market.

But more broadly, the analysts largely suggested that games spending generally would likely not take a meaningful blow — it just might shift around a bit. As Elliott explained:

“The rising prices won’t necessarily reduce spending. Even in the toughest of economic times, games are incredibly price-inelastic. The market will bear it. Early adopters will always be early adopters. PlayStation and Nintendo console sales have been tracking above or in-line with previous generations, despite consoles not dropping in price like previous generations. PlayStation actually increased its unit prices for the PS5, while Nintendo did for the Switch more stealthily by charging more for the OLED model. What’s more, in-app purchases generate vast spending these days — more than premium game purchases when looking at the market as a whole.”

And Rosier agreed: “Not necessarily a decline, but we may see shifts in where and how money is spent. As prices rise, consumers may become more selective — spending less on individual full-priced titles and more on subscriptions, discounted bundles, or long-tail live-service games. The total spend may remain steady or even grow modestly, but the distribution across formats and platforms will likely continue to evolve. Xbox’s pricing changes, and similar moves by others, could accelerate this transition toward services and ecosystems over standalone product purchases.”

Harding-Rolls added that the U.S. may feel more of the impact, given that it’s the largest console market and where the tariffs are localized. And Ahmad suggested that the Asian and MENA markets, though still impacted by global economic factors, would still see growth, especially in markets such as India, Thailand, and China. As for software, McWhirter noted that while pricing of full games has historically not followed inflation and has been more subject to consumer pushback, Xbox moving to $80 full-priced games so quickly after Nintendo suggests that more publishers will soon follow suit.

“Importantly, we don't expect this to directly impact sales volumes, especially given 2025's high-quality content pipeline — but publishers will continue to explore ways in which they can add value post-release,” he continued. “Many already do this via frequent discounting, multi-tiered pricing strategies, DLC, bundling. On the platform holder side, companies like Nintendo can always pull the right levers after launch — we expect Nintendo Switch Online Game Vouchers to make a return at a higher price point to accommodate $80 games.”

Piscatella was a bit less optimistic than the others, but his uncertainty echoed what every analyst I speak to regularly has been saying for months now ever since tariff discussion began: everything is uncertain, now moreso than ever, and no one actually knows for sure what’s going to happen to the economy, the global tech market, or video games.

“My expectation for the remainder of the trade war is that consumers will shift even more towards free-to-play and other more easily accessible forms of gaming, including games they already own or have access to,” Piscatella said. “Games like Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox, etc will likely see even more players and hours spent in their ecosystems. Players will also rely on and continue to play devices they already own a bit more rather than buy new hardware. And, as prices rise in everyday spending categories like food, gas, shelter, automotive, etc, there will be fewer and fewer dollars available for categories like gaming in the U.S.

“I was trying to hold on to the +4.8% outlook I had at the beginning of the year for as long as I could, but that's looking more and more foolishly optimistic every day. Can easily see a high single-digit percentage decline, or even into the teens, depending on the other dominoes that fall when it comes to pricing. The error bars on any forecast are bigger now than they've ever been given the uncertainty in the market.”

Hideo Kojima Has an Amazing Idea for a 'Forgetting Game' Where the Main Character Gradually Forgets Important Information and Abilities if You Take Too Long a Break From Playing

Hideo Kojima’s Japanese radio podcast KOJI10 has been giving listeners insight into how the Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator thinks. In the most recent broadcast (Episode 17), Kojima shared his thoughts on how time passing in real life can be used in video games. Not only did Kojima comment on time-related mechanics he has implemented in past games, but he also revealed concepts that he hasn’t used yet. This includes an idea that he scrapped from the upcoming Death Stranding 2: On The Beach.

Kojima is no stranger to gameplay mechanics that make use of your console or PC’s internal clock as a timer.

He starts out by mentioning two examples from 2004’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater on the PS2. To add to the realism of surviving in the jungle, the fresh food you had acquired would go off after a few days had passed in real life. Eating rotten food could make Snake violently sick, or you could turn spoiled food into a novel weapon by throwing it at hungry enemy soldiers.

Kojima also made use of the system clock for MGS3’s cat-and-mouse boss battle against elderly sniper The End. “Although he is a really tough boss, if the player waits a week, The End will die of old age,” recalls Kojima. Indeed, if the player loads their in-battle save at least one week later, they will be treated to a cutscene in which Snake discovers that The End is dead.

“I’ve thought about having characters’ hair grow in games,” Kojima reveals. “Originally in Death Stranding 2, I was going to have Sam’s beard gradually grow out over time, and the player would have to shave it. If they didn’t, Sam would end up looking unkempt,” he explains. “However, as Norman Reedus is a big star, I didn’t want to make him look uncool!” Despite this, the director says it is still something he might add to another game one day.

Kojima also comes up with three game concepts that have the passing of time in real life as a major mechanic. The first is a kind of game of life: “It starts out with the player being born, you’re a child and then gradually over time you become an adult. In the game, you fight various enemies. Like with the previous example (MGS3’s The End), if you keep playing the game, you will become a 70 or 80 year old man. However, at this age you will be weaker, your eyesight will worsen. When you are a teenager you’ll be able to run faster but by the time you reach 60 you’ll slow down a bit,” Kojima explains, revealing that although your character will be in better physical condition when they are younger, they will have more knowledge and experience when they are older. This aging will affect your strategy as to how you deal with enemies. “But no-one would buy it!” Kojima adds, however the other people on the podcast expressed enthusiasm about playing such a “Kojima-like game.”

Another idea he mentions is a game where you are creating something that takes time to mature, such as wine or cheese. This requires the player to continue gradually playing it over a long period of time, and sounds like it would work as a background/idle game.

On the flip side, Kojima also proposes a “forgetting game” that the player would have to “play through quickly.” In this concept, the main character gradually forgets important information and abilities if you take too long a break from the game. For example, if you don’t play every day, the main character will gradually forget things such as “how to fire their gun or what their job is.” This forgetfulness builds up until finally the player is unable to move. “Players would have to take a week off work or school to play it,” Kojima laughs.

Speaking of taking time off, doubtless many Kojima fans will be doing just that when Death Stranding 2 releases on June 26. For more about the upcoming game, check out our interview with Kojima, and our impressions after playing through the first 30 hours.

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link Mobile Game Cancelled, But It's Not All Bad News As Square Enix Teases It Is 'Hard at Work on Kingdom Hearts 4'

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, the GPS-based action-RPG for mobile, has been cancelled — but it's not all bad news for Kingdom Hearts fans, as Square Enix confirmed it is still "hard at work" on Kingdom Hearts 4.

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link would have taken us to the realm of Scala ad Caelum in a new, original story in the grand battle against the Heartless on mobile devices, and had been originally slated to release in 2024.

However, in an unsigned statement posted to the game's X/Twitter account, Square Enix wished to "convey [its] heartfelt apologies to everyone who have been looking forward" to it, but cancelled the project because it was "determined that it would be difficult [...] to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time." The statement did not elaborate on what, exactly, was proving difficult.

"We wish to convey our heartfelt apologies to everyone who has been looking forward to the start of service," the statement said. "Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would enjoyed by lots of players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development.

"We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to everyone who gave us their support and assistance with the multiple closed beta tests. We are truly sorry to have to make this announcement."

Right at the end of the statement, however, Square Enix assured fans the "Kingdom Hearts series will continue," and hinted "we are hard at work on Kingdom Hearts 4, and hope you'll continue to support the series as you keep an eye out for further updates."

This is the first official mention of the highly-anticipated sequel fans have had in months, the last being a tiny, cryptic tease for Kingdom Hearts 4 back in January. Despite being revealed in September 2022 with a full cinematic trailer, developer Square Enix has since gone incredibly quiet since and, in series tradition, left fans pining for more.

Kingdom Hearts series director Tetsuya Nomura has however hinted that Kingdom Hearts 4 will, after 22 years and a whopping 18 games, finally shift the Kingdom Hearts narrative towards its conclusion.

Unannounced Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel Title 'Super Mario World' Published Then Pulled From NBCUniversal Press Release

We might have the name of the The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel ahead of time after an NBCUniversal press release appeared to jump the gun.

As spotted across the internet, NBCUniversal published a press release announcing its Upfront Showcase offerings, and in it mentioned Super Mario World as one of the upcoming films from Universal Pictures and Illumination that will eventually be released on its streaming service, Peacock.

It didn’t take long for Universal to change the wording of the press release to remove all mention of Mario entirely.

"Super Mario World" title removed from the post pic.twitter.com/l88T05I096

— Wario64 (@Wario64) May 14, 2025

It’s worth noting that the original paragraph in the NBCUniversal press release referred to “Super Mario World, Shrek, and Minions." We know Shrek and Minions are Shrek 5 and Minions 3, which perhaps means NBCUniversal did not list the correct final title of the Mario movie sequel either, instead a potential umbrella term. That is to say, the next Shrek movie is not simply called Shrek, and the next Minions movie is not simply called Minions.

However, Super Mario World is a more specific title than a simple Super Mario or Super Mario Bros., so it’s worth speculating based on it being correct. And indeed, Super Mario World as the title of the next Mario movie would make a lot of sense.

Warning! Spoilers for The Super Mario Bors. Movie follow:

The Super Mario Bros. Movie post-credits scene gave us a glimpse of a character who’s almost certainly going to play a big part in the next movie. We return to the underground sewer system of the real world and see a quick glimpse of a polka-dotted egg. That egg is starting to hatch, and we know who’s inside: Mario’s faithful dinosaur companion Yoshi. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is teeing up Yoshi in basically the same way the first Sonic the Hedgehog teased the debut of Tails.

Fans of the Mario video games will know 1990 SNES platformer masterpiece Super Mario World marked Yoshi’s video game debut. Perhaps ‘The Super Mario World Movie’ will do the same in the movie adaptation franchise.

According to the lore in Super Mario World (what little there is), Bowser magically trapped the Yoshis in eggs, leaving Mario to find and free them over the course of the game. The Yoshi we see in the post-credits scene could be part of one of Bowser’s schemes. Maybe the Koopa King has a contingency plan in case he’s defeated?

The Super Mario Bros. Movie arrived in 2023 and was a smash hit for Nintendo, pulling in $1.36 billion worldwide. This quickly led to the announcement of a second film, but outside an April 3, 2026 release date, practically nothing is known about it.

In our 8/10 review of the first film, IGN said: "The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a fireball of animated fantasy, overcoming a Paper Mario-thin plot with undeniable charm and energy."

Andor Season 2 Ending Explained - Why the Series Is More than Just a Rogue One Prequel

Warning: this article contains full spoilers for Andor Season 2’s finale. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out IGN's review for Andor Season 2, Episodes 10-12.

Andor Season 2 just wrapped on Disney+, capping off what is easily one of the best Star Wars projects to come out of the Disney era. In the process, the series leads directly into the events of 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story bringing Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor full circle at last.

We already know what happens next for Cassian and the Rebel Alliance. His tragic future is already set in stone. But despite that, there’s a lot to unpack in the dramatic finale of Andor, as the series reveals the fates of many major characters and drops a major twist with big ramifications for the Star Wars franchise. Let’s break down everything that happens and how the series paves the way for future Star Wars adventures.

Andor Season 2’s Ending Explained

Andor Season 2 has been busy chronicling the final four years in the life of Cassian Andor. Or, at least, the most pivotal moments in those four years. First, in 4 BBY, we saw Cassian’s mission to steal a prototype TIE Avenger and his temporary imprisonment on Yavin IV, destined to become the new operating base of the fledgling Rebel Alliance. Then, in 3 BBY, we saw the role Cassian and the Empire each played in propping up the resistance cell known as The Ghorman Front. Those actions then bore fruit in 2 BBY, as the Empire responded to its manufactured political crisis and instigated the Ghorman Massacre, galvanizing Genevieve O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma and the Rebels.

The series now takes its final bow in 1 BBY, just days before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: A New Hope. As expected, Andor ends by showing us the final sequence of events leading up to the first major conflict between the Rebellion and the Empire on Scarif. It’s all catalyzed by Stellan Skarsgård’s Luthen Rael, who proves to be the Rebel agent who first uncovers evidence of the Death Star.

These final three episodes follow what happens next, as Luthen sacrifices himself (with a little assistance from Elizabeth Dulau’s Kleya Marki) and Cassian and friends make a high-stakes trip to Coruscant to bring Kleya in. It’s a mission that would surely have ended in torture and death for all involved if not for the assistance of Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO.

Rogue One emphasized the idea that the Rebellion’s victory at the Battle of Yavin was a miracle that was accomplished through many individual acts of heroism. At any point in the chain, something could have gone wrong that doomed the Rebellion to failure. Now we have a better appreciation for how far back that chain extends. If not for Luthen and Kleya’s bravery, the Rebels would have no idea of the danger looming over them. Hope persists in the darkest of times.

The series ends with the Alliance High Command finally accepting the reality of what Cassian and Kleya are telling them. The Empire is building a super-weapon. They don’t yet know that it’s one with the power to destroy entire planets, but they do know it’s connected to the Empire’s supposed energy program, its kyber mining efforts on Jedha, and its actions on Ghorman. The pieces are falling into place, leaving Cassian free to meet his contact Tivik on the Ring of Kafrene. That encounter unfolds in one of the first scenes in Rogue One, where Cassian learns the full truth about the Death Star and the defection of Riz Ahmed’s Bodhi Rook.

The series also shows us the fates of many of the other major players in this prequel series. Kleya seems ready to integrate with the Rebels, joining loyal soldiers like Faye Marsay’s Vel Sartha and Muhannad Bhaier’s Wilmon Paak. We also see one last glimpse of Forest Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera, who watches in paranoid agitation as an Imperial Star Destroyer looms above Jedha. On the Imperial side of things, Anton Lesser’s Major Partagaz is forced to pay the ultimate price for his failure to contain the Death Star leak, committing suicide rather than submitting to whatever other punishments the Emperor had in mind.

Meanwhile, Dedra is seen languishing in an Imperial prison cell, ironically in the same facility on Narkina 5 where Cassian was imprisoned in Season 1.

Meanwhile, Dedra is seen languishing in an Imperial prison cell, ironically in the same facility on Narkina 5 where Cassian was imprisoned in Season 1. She’s clearly wracked by shame and guilt, contending with everything she sacrificed in the name of the Empire and the realization that none of it mattered in the end. The series has a lot to say about the perils of living under fascism. Dedra is proof that no amount of loyalty and sacrifice can change the fact that everyone serving the Empire is merely a pawn to be discarded when they outlive their usefulness.

“I always think of it like Dedra is in a gang,” Gough told IGN in a recent roundtable interview. “These guys are in a tribe and Dedra is in a gang, and the gang just disperse at the first sign of trouble. They throw each other to the wolves. There's no loyalties. And so it was really clear to me that going through it, that when you commit your whole life and she's indoctrinated into the gang, so she can't see anything outside it. It's actually really tragic. She can't have intimacy or vulnerability or anything. And so it's a real kind of a foil to what the people in the Rebellion do have, which is loyalty, trust, love, intimacy, community, all of those things.”

Episode 12 serves as a neat and tidy way to end the series, albeit somewhat bittersweet. We know that Cassian himself has only a few days left to live before he and the rest of the Rogue One team sacrifice their lives on Scarif. But there is one, final reveal saved for the very end.

Revealing Cassian Andor’s Child

The final scene in Episode 12 reveals that Adria Arjona’s Bix Caleen has returned to Mina-Rau to live out her days in peace. Not only that, she’s raising a baby. As hinted at in Episode 9, Bix was pregnant when she left Cassian on Yavin IV. While she claimed to be leaving Cassian to ensure he would continue serving the Rebellion, it’s clear now that she also wanted to bring their unborn child somewhere he could grow up safe from the Empire.

Cassian may be doomed to die fighting on Scarif, but his legacy lives on in a very tangible way. That’s probably the happiest ending fans could hope for from this generally very somber Star Wars series.

“[Showrunner Tony Gilroy] really believes that information is power,” Arjona told IGN. “And he told me months before I read the scene where I sort of send Cassian off. He told me that that was going to happen. And so for months I was kind of lingering on that effect or that feeling before I ever read it. And when I read it, it shook me. I started crying immediately. And I love Rogue One, and I respect that movie so much. So to sort of send Cassian on this journey meant the world to me.”

“For anyone who had doubts in [Episode] 9 about her motivation, it underlines it at the end. Absolutely,” Gilroy adds. “It makes his sacrifice even more powerful. So much stronger. I mean, you want hope at the end… It would be cruel and unnatural to put all these people through all this stuff and not have a candle in the window at the end.”

Does Andor Season 2 Have a Post-Credits Scene?

The Star Wars franchise isn’t as big about post-credits scenes and stingers as Marvel, but we have seen them in the past with some live-action Star Wars shows. That includes Andor Season 1, which ended with the reveal that the Narkina 5 prisoners were manufacturing equipment being used on the Death Star.

Based on that, fans might be expecting Season 2 to also end with a post-credits scene of some sort. But not in this case. The series is done once the final credits start rolling. When Andor segues this neatly into the beginning of Rogue One, what’s the point of a post-credits scene?

Besides, the final scene with Bix is all the series really needs in terms of setting the stage for future stories. There’s another Andor out there in the galaxy, and no doubt they have a grand destiny ahead of them, too. On that note…

How Andor Sets Up Future Star Wars Stories

As much as Andor serves as a direct prequel to Rogue One, the series does leave some loose ends open for future Star Wars projects to build upon. As mentioned, key characters like Will, Kleya, and Vel are still alive and active in the Rebellion. This leaves room for future Star Wars comics and novels to explore the ongoing role they play in the Galactic Civil War. Did they fight in the Battle of Scarif or other major conflicts like the Battle of Endor? Did they ever rub elbows with the likes of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker? Andor is so far removed from the Jedi business that usually dominates the franchise, so it might be fascinating to read a story that explores how these ordinary heroes react to fighting alongside a living legend like Luke.

It’s also worth pointing out that, though Season 2 explores the last four years of Cassian’s life, it only focuses on very specific periods within those four years. Now that Andor has wrapped, there’s ample room for Lucasfilm to double back and commission new books that flesh out other conflicts during this era. How did the bond between Cassian and K-2SO form? What other high-stakes missions did Cassian undertake? Lucasfilm is dabbling in this area with the recently announced Reign of the Empire trilogy, but there’s room for plenty more stories spinning out of Andor.

Then there’s poor Dedra. As much as the series delivers a poetic ending to her story, we can’t help but wonder if there’s more story to be told. What becomes of Dedra? Does she spend the remainder of the Galactic Civil War locked up on Narkina 5? What happens when the Empire is overthrown? How does she react to seeing her precious Empire fall? Is she freed? Is she put on trial for her role in orchestrating the Ghorman Massacre? We can’t help but feel there’s more to be explored there.

No doubt the child will grow up hearing stories of Cassian’s heroism and bravery, inspiring them to follow in their father’s footsteps.

But above all, Andor leaves us to question what becomes of Bix and her child. No doubt the child will grow up hearing stories of Cassian’s heroism and bravery, inspiring them to follow in their father’s footsteps. Given the time period in which this series is set, there’s no way Cassian’s child could participate in the Rebel Alliance (unless they grow so desperate they start relying on child soldiers). But they would be the right age to take part in the war between the Resistance and the First Order. It would be a comforting thought to know that Leia’s forces have another tie to the classic Rebellion era in the form of Cassian Andor’s offspring.

One intriguing possibility is that Cassian Jr. could wind up being a character in Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter. We don’t know much about that film, other than that it’ll star Ryan Gosling and it’s set about five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Cassian and Bix’s child would be in their 40s at that point, leaving them in a perfect position to take up arms in whatever conflict exists after the fall of Palpatine’s Final Order.

Regardless of where and when it happens, we have to assume it’s only a matter of time before Cassian and Bix’s child makes their presence known in the Star Wars franchise. Cassian himself may be gone, but his sacrifice wasn’t in vain. The Rebellion survives, and so does his family. That’s everything Cassian was fighting for.

For more on Andor, find out how the series created a major Star Wars plot hole (and why that doesn't matter), and see the cast react to Episode 9’s shocking death.

Andor Series Finale Review

Andor’s series finale is all about tying up loose ends. After an incredible crescendo on Ghorman in chapter 3, Tony Gilroy and company set out to get Andor’s affairs in order, with a last batch of episodes that feeds directly into Rogue One and only really leaves a single character behind.

There are TV shows that don’t know they’re getting cancelled when they end their runs, and then there are those that get to decide how they go out. And then there’s Andor, a show that knew its end point even before they decided to make it. I’ve talked in my reviews of this season about the absolute brilliance of telling a story that thematically aligns with that situation, that highlights the fact that these characters are on a course that was set for them nearly a decade ago. It should come as no surprise that the loose ends that Andor’s final chapter ties off are as integral to the onscreen story as they are baked into the proposition of doing a prequel in the first place – especially a prequel that feeds so directly into the established big screen lore of the franchise.

But that’s bigger picture stuff, and I’d rather start small when talking about chapter 4. There’s a conversation very early in episode 10 between Luthen and his double agent at the ISB, Lonni Jung, that is shot so pristinely that it kind of drives me nuts. This scene on the page is, I would argue, pretty straightforward spycraft stuff. It lives more in ’70s thriller territory with 3 Days of the Condor than it does with Star Wars. It’s just two guys talking on a bench next to a pond. That’s as stock as it gets. What sets this scene apart though is its visual language. The camera blocking that clearly asks and answers the question, “How do we make this interesting on screen?”

I’m going to slip into film-technique nerd mode for a second and just talk about the composition of the first wide shot. It’s a wide open space, underneath a set of bridges, not another soul to be seen. But the lines formed by the bricks on the ground draw your eyes up to the two men, who are dressed in dark wardrobe that stands out against the white concrete of their surroundings. The bridges overheard are looping, circuitous paths leading to different destinations off in the future somewhere while the skyline of Coruscant – where life proceeds completely unaware of Luthen and Lonni’s meeting – looms in the distance. It’s a beautiful shot and even if all of that meaning wasn’t intended, it’s meaning that can certainly be applied to it because of how gorgeous the composition is.

But then as they begin to talk the camera plays a role as well. Lonni wants assurances that he and his family will be safe, while Luthen wants to know what Lonni knows before he assures Lonni of anything. Episode director Alonso Ruizpalacios stages this part of the conversation with what are known as “French Overs,” or close-ups of the characters from behind their backs. This gives a slightly closed view of the actors’ faces and leaves the impression that they’re holding something back. As Lonni becomes more desperate, putting his cards on the table, the camera switches back to the front side of the actors and their intentions become clearer to us. Luthen even leans in like a predator waiting to pounce towards the end of the scene. And this is where camera blocking really becomes invaluable. The pair of them have not moved an inch from their spots on this park bench, but the camera has been actively telling us how to feel about it the whole time. It’s just a quiet scene on the park bench on the page, but on screen, it’s a thrilling game of chess.

This is not meant to be camera blocking 101, though. I’m only getting into gory detail on the technique of a scene to share just how impressive Andor is on a number of levels. The story the writers are telling on the page is interesting and dynamic and more grounded than sci-fi typically tries to be, but Andor is telling the same kind of story visually as well. The way every craftsman and trade on set is pulling in the same direction, the fact that a quiet scene on a park bench is worth breaking down with 300 words worth of film-school stuff, speaks volumes about the high quality of the show.

The unsung heroes of the Star Wars universe are the whole point of Andor.

Meanwhile, the most important thing about Lonni Jung is that to me he is most representative of what this show has been doing right all along. I’ve mentioned it before, but the unsung heroes of the Star Wars universe – the untold stories at the roots of the Rebellion – they’re the whole point of Andor. Without Lonni Jung, Luke Skywalker does not blow up the Death Star. Full stop. Maybe they find another way, and “the chosen one” or whatever ends up bullseyeing a womprat anyway, but here’s this guy, a double agent middle manager in the Empire’s intelligence machine – a side character in this very show – alerting the Rebellion to the Death Star’s very existence, only to be tossed away for somebody’s dog to find dead on a park bench. It’s a reminder that many Lonnis died to bring us this information.

That is an incredible thing for Star Wars to do in this, the year 2025, or ABY 48 if you like. This is how you do a prequel. Not by adding a whole other canvas, but by filling in the details in the background.

But if you were worried about Luthen not getting all his details filled in, chapter 4 has you covered. As the series’ most enigmatic character, there’s something very romantic about him popping up out of nowhere to play a pivotal role in the Rebellion only to disappear as quickly. So, when we get a ton of his backstory via flashback, I honestly didn’t know how to feel about it.

On one hand, he becomes his own loose end to deal with as Dedra finally finds him – which, as a quick aside, is an incredible scene. Luthen is getting the only conclusion that ever made sense for him. It’s the one he knew was not only possible, but likely inevitable, and to have him cling to life for an origin-story-revealing amount of time makes sense. It also doubles as Kleya’s backstory as well, as she remembers her partner in crime in the empty safehouse. On the other hand, I don’t really like flashbacks.

Luthen and Kleya's story sneaks in right at the finish line and does all the things that the rest of Andor has done so well.

As effusive as I’ve been about a double prequel as an entire series, I’ll admit it seems a little hypocritical to balk at a flashback, but more often than not, I don’t like how flashbacks are used. There’s a tendency for them to feel like they’re coming from the writer for our benefit as an audience. It’s easy for them to feel inorganic on screen, like the show is saying “I bet you want to know where Luthen and Kleya came from, so here you go!”

So unfairly or not, the first bits of the pair’s origins had me rolling my eyes a little. But at some point it becomes clear that the development of Luthen and Kleya’s relationship over the years is a surprisingly important thread in the history of the Rebellion and a bit of a microcosm of the whole point of Andor. Their story sneaks in right at the finish line and does all the things that the entire show has done so well.

Firstly, it gives personal and small, emotional stakes to the action on screen. Kleya has for the entire run of the show been a cold and callous, “This is what you signed up for, stop complaining” presence in the show. She's had to keep everybody in check. Her line to Vel in season 1 about needy faces at the door is great. She’s even had to slap Luthen’s hand a bit when he starts to waiver – we saw a lot of that in chapter 2 of this season. Giving her this deep connection to Luthen creates a completely new kind of presence for her. It’s a whole other emotional investment in the job that she is now stuck with, which is of course, to finish killing her father before he can be resuscitated and interrogated.

Kleya also becomes maybe the most important character in the entire Rebellion. If she weren’t around to cross paths with Luthen, if she hadn’t been there to inspire him to do something about the horrors he was witnessing, maybe there is no Rebellion at all, but certainly it starts somewhere else. Like Lonnie Jung, all of a sudden here’s this person who’s a side character in this show but proves to be a central figure in the fight against the Empire.

Meanwhile, that idea of fate that’s been tossed around so thoroughly in this series is present in the flashback as well. During the scene where Luthen and Kleya set off a bomb among a group of troops on a bridge they talk about making choices but does she get to? Luthen is kind of making the choice for her. It’s a scene with multiple reads, I think, on one hand there’s Luthen taking the choice out of Kleya’s hands, on the other there’s Kleya making the choice to do it, but Luthen ultimately sparing her the act of actually doing it. So is he a ruthless and cold father figure here, or is he protecting Kleya in a moment where she’s still very young? Either way, they’re both party to killing people, and there is nothing black-and-white about what’s happening in this scene. It’s one of the best in the final chapter and most emblematic of what the entire series is about and it’s all the more impressive that it does so in a flashback – which, again, is one of my least favorite filmmaking devices of all.

A lot of the back half of this final chapter is about setting up Rogue One more than anything else, however. This is the one pitfall of the prequel series Andor wasn’t able to entirely avoid. Because the other thing is that I've gotten through over 1,800 words of this review without mentioning the show's title character. To be fair, I am fine with that, because, as I've said with characters like Luthen, Lonnie, and Kleya, this is a series dedicated to the side characters. Dedra gets a wonderfully tragic, fitting end, and so does Partagaz. But Cassian’s relative unimportance to the finale is also a point worth scrutinizing.

In a way, Cassian's absence this week makes sense because the final season of Andor is actually Rogue One.

The heavy lifting for Cassian in these final episodes comes when he, Melshi, and K-2SO get an inaugural onscreen mission to go and rescue Kleya from Coruscant – but it’s all very familiar, because we’ve seen that kind of thing from these guys before. There’s a slow motion, walk-and-nod shot at the tail end of the season that feels obligatory more than satisfying. In a way, though his absence makes sense because the final season of Andor is actually Rogue One. That’s the end of his story so as far as Andor the series is concerned. Andor the Rebel is not a loose end yet.

Krysten Ritter Officially Returning as Jessica Jones for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2

Krysten Ritter is officially returning as Jessica Jones for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.

As reported by Variety, news of Ritter’s return as Marvel’s crime-fighting private investigator was revealed during the Disney Upfront presentation in New York today. The confirmation follows months of rumors that the Disney+ show could reunite more than a few of the Netflix Defenders as fans hope to see them make their Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut sooner rather than later.

Ritter took the stage alongside Daredevil and The Defenders co-star Charlie Cox to express her excitement about the return of Jessica Jones.

“It’s so great to be back, returning to Jessica after three seasons and The Defenders and now joining the MCU,” Ritter said. “I’m so excited to bring back this iconic character, and without giving too much away, there is much more in store for Jessica Jones. This is going to be an incredible season!”

Ritter first portrayed the New York-based Marvel hero when Jessica Jones Season 1 premiered on Netflix in 2015. Two more seasons eventually followed, as did The Defenders team-up series, but as Netflix’s time with original Marvel programming began to wind down, so too did hopes that Ritter would ever play the character again.

That was until 2021, when Disney regained ownership of the rights to certain characters, including Jessica Jones. As Cox was eventually brought back for a brief Spider-Man: No Way Home cameo as well as his own Disney+ show with Daredevil: Born Again, fans began to speculate about how the revival project could serve as a vehicle to reintroduce other Netflix heroes. With Punisher serving a pivotal role in Season 1, it makes sense to see Ritter returning for Season 2.

Ritter last played the character in Jessica Jones Season 3, which premiered in 2019. Her tease at the upfront presentation suggests the MCU may see more Jessica Jones in the future, but for now, we can at least expect to see her in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. Disney has yet to announce a release date, but showrunner Dario Scardapane has told fans to expect more episodes in March 2026.

For more, you can read our 8/10 review of the Daredevil revival show’s first season as well as our reviews for Jessica Jones seasons 1, 2, and 3. You can also check out every street-level hero we could potentially see in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 here.

The Best Apple Watch Alternatives for 2025

If you're in the market for a smartwatch but Apple Watch models just don't quite fit your needs, you're in luck: Plenty of fantastic alternatives are out there. Maybe you don't own an iPhone, or you're looking for something a bit more budget-friendly. Whatever your reason, it's good to know that there are plenty of top smartwatches that offer great features and performance without the Apple design – or price tag.

TL;DR – These Are the Best Apple Watch Alternatives:

Given that an Apple Watch doesn't play nicely with Android systems, anyone who doesn't buy into the Apple ecosystem should look at the loads of other smartwatches that can integrate seamlessly with alternative platforms, giving you access to your notifications, fitness tracking, and contactless payments. Or, if you’re mainly interested in health and fitness metrics, some wearables are designed specifically to help you monitor your workouts, sleep, and overall wellness.

1. Samsung Galaxy Watch 7

The Best Apple Watch Alternative

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 is easily the best Android smartwatch, offering comfort, style, and functionality. The latest generation rocks a minimalist band with a sharp, circular, and responsive AMOLED touch display nearly identical to previous models for more of a classic timepiece look. A new gesture feature adds more one-handed functionality, so you won’t constantly be tapping the display.

A wide range of advanced sensors monitor skin temperature, ECG, and blood oxygen saturation, along with reliable automatic exercise detection and solid sleep tracking. A new BioActive sensor improves the accuracy of metrics. Samsung upped this watch’s abilities further, offering ways to detect sleep apnea, like the Apple Watch Series 10. Other AI health tools, including an Energy Score, can offer even more helpful health insights. Unfortunately, the AI features are limited to Galaxy phones like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Those features, plus the ability to send messages, answer calls, and make payments are all thanks to a reliable and snappy 3-nanometer Exynos chip. Performance is smooth across the board, and when paired with Google’s Wear OS and Samsung One UI skin, the experience seamlessly accesses just about any app you'd want. However, this model’s battery life remains virtually unchanged, lasting an average of about 24 hours with typical usage. It’s not great, but still better than the Apple Watch Series 10.

With various color options, 40mm and 44mm sizes, and swappable watch bands and faces, the Galaxy Watch 7 is highly customizable. It’s possible to connect with your phone via Bluetooth and the Samsung Galaxy Wearable app, or you can use cellular connectivity.

2. Google Pixel Watch 3

Best Casual Apple Watch Alternative

The Google Pixel Watch 3 is a game-changer in the world of smartwatches, combining a sleek design with cutting-edge features to help you stay on top of your fitness goals and daily routine. With a 45mm screen that's twice as bright and 40% larger than its predecessor, the Pixel Watch 3 makes it easier than ever to see your stats and information at a glance, whether you're on a run or just checking your messages.

For runners, the Pixel Watch 3 is packed with features to help you maximize your workouts. You can build custom runs, get real-time guidance, and even track your form with advanced metrics. With Fitbit Premium, Google AI takes your goals, past runs, and fitness readiness into account to offer personalized recommendations, making every run more effective and tailored to your needs. Plus, the readiness feature helps you understand what your body can handle each day, attuning to whether it’s time to push hard or focus on recovery.

Beyond fitness, the Pixel Watch 3 is designed to seamlessly integrate with your life. It offers 24 hours of battery life with an always-on display, and up to 36 hours in Battery Saver mode. You can access Google Maps offline, use Google Wallet for payments, and even control your Pixel camera right from your wrist. Whether you’re listening to music with Pixel Buds or checking your Nest Cam feed, this watch makes it simple and convenient to stay connected.

3. Garmin Venu 3

Best Apple Watch Alternative for iPhone Users

Equipped with a sharp AMOLED display and impressive battery life, the Garmin Venu 3 is a fantastic pick for iPhone users (or anyone, really) who want more robust fitness options and a circular watch design.

It comes with the features you’ve come to expect from a smartwatch — including accurate GPS, phone notifications, music, fitness tracking, heart rate monitoring, and much more. The Venu 3 has upgraded the unique Body Battery tool that gives insight into when you should work out and even added nap detection, sleep coaching, and wheelchair tracking. That’s just scratching the surface of its fitness functionality.

The smartwatch is versatile and even does things the Apple Watch just can’t do. However, it doesn’t offer cellular connectivity, so you’ll need to pair it with a smartphone to get the most out of the Venu 3.

4. Fitbit Sense 2

Best Apple Watch Alternative for Fitness

For the physically fit, the Fitbit Sense 2 (by Google) is the smartwatch of choice and one of the best Fitbits overall. It’s loaded with useful fitness sensors, including GPS to track activities with more than 40 exercise modes, a skin temperature sensor to monitor body heat, and continuous ElectroDermal Activity (cEDA) to track stress. The smartwatch is water-resistant too, so you can wear it while swimming laps in a pool.

The Fitbit Sense 2, which can last a very impressive six days per battery charge, also works with the Amazon Alexa voice assistant for real-time updates and Google Wallet for contactless and quick payment.

5. Amazfit Active 2

Best Budget Apple Watch Alternative

For under $100, the Amazfit Active 2 offers tons of sensors, over 160 sports modes, and a GPS to cover every health and fitness tracking need. A unique strength training mode automatically recognizes different moves, while an AI coach can guide workouts. Downloadable maps add more functionality, providing turn-by-turn directions without needing to be connected to a smartphone. Admittedly, not all tracking and sensors will be as accurate and precise as an Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch, but for the price, it can’t be beat.

Rather than Google’s Wear OS or Apple’s watchOS, the Amazfit Active 2 runs on Zepp. This lesser-known software still offers a range of apps and faces. It’s fairly simple to master, and an AI assistant, similar to Siri, is built-in to adjust settings, reply to messages, and more. Unfortunately, it will cost extra to add NFC support. There’s no cellular, but the watch shouldn’t have a problem connecting to iPhones or Androids via Bluetooth.

The Amazfit Active 2 keeps the design sleek and simple with a circular, stainless steel body. It feels surprisingly premium, and the 1.32-inch AMOLED display is responsive and easy to see in just about any lighting conditions. The lightweight build ensures it remains comfortable on wrist, and you won’t need to worry about taking it off often, as the watch can last up to 10 days depending on usage. It's really one of the best budget fitness trackers out there.

6. Garmin Enduro 3

Best Battery Life in an Apple Watch Alternative

Smartwatches bring tons of capability to your wrist, but most are lucky to last 24 hours. The Apple Watch Series 10 averages about 18 hours, and that number can tank when you add in constant GPS tracking. The Garmin Enduro 3 is one of the few watches ready to survive weeks or even months on a single charge depending on usage. Plus, with a unique Power Sapphire lens for solar power-saving, it's possible to squeeze 90 days of charge in smartwatch mode or 320 hours in GPS mode with proper lighting conditions. Even without garnering energy from the sun, the Enduro 3 significantly outlasts other smartwatches.

Beyond battery life, this smartwatch is an absolute powerhouse when it comes to GPS tracking and running features. From topo maps and grade-adjusted pace to a new dynamic round-trip routing feature that adapts your route to stay on schedule, it’s ready to go the distance. Updated sensors provide more accurate insights into your health and wellness journey, and of course, you get all the tracking and sports modes you could need. Other smarts like app notifications, calls, and music playback are slightly limited, as this watch is more fitness-focused.

It’s clear that the Garmin Enduro 3 was built for adventurers. A titanium body and bezel can handle tons of wear and tear, while the 100m water resistance is ideal for divers and swimmers. Its touch display isn’t as flashy as other smartwatches, but it's still reliable and provides easy viewing. Several buttons surrounding the watch make navigating all the features easier, especially if you’re wearing gloves. Garmin even includes a tiny LED flashlight for when you get stuck on a trail later than expected. Just be prepared for this featuref-rich watch to feel a little clunky on smaller wrists.

7. Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro

Best Rugged Apple Watch Alternative

Instead of the Apple Watch Ultra, go with the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro we reviewed and gave high marks, especially for rugged outdoor use. At 45mm, the Android smartwatch is designed for adventure and the great outdoors with a wide range of features, such as GPS map support and Samsung’s “Track Back” for finding your way if you’re lost in the wilderness.

The smartwatch is made from durable Titanium and Sapphire crystal glass, while its long-lasting battery life will get you up to 80 hours of use per charge. Starting at $450, the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro is also nearly 45 percent less expensive than the Apple Watch Ultra or Apple Watch Ultra 2.

8. TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4

Best Luxury Apple Watch Alternative

If money is no object, TAG Heuer makes a brilliant smartwatch that passes for a stunning classic timepiece. The Connected Calibre E4 offers up a crisp, clear touch display set behind sapphire crystal, while the watch’s body is made of durable steel or titanium and ceramic. It’s obvious more attention to detail was paid in the creation of this watch over the Apple Watch, as both sandblasted and polished elements on the frame deliver a truly premium feel. TAG Heuer’s collection of watch faces are equally stunning. A sturdy rubber crown also makes it easy to scroll menus and additional buttons ensure you don’t always need to rely on the touchscreen.

While looks make the Connected Calibre E4 a standout, it’s also full of all the smartwatch features you’d expect. Fitness tracking and workouts are all available via the TAG Heuer Sports app. TAG Heuer is also known for its brilliant golf app, which offers maps, distance, and other tools for out on the green if that's your thing. However, this watch is a little light on the sensors compared to others; only a heart rate monitor, compass, and barometer are included. Still, a GPS can map walks, runs, and more.

Using the watch should be butter smooth, consistent, and simple thanks to a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100+ processor and Google WearOS. It seamlessly connects to Android devices but works pretty well with the best iPhones too. Though the Connected Calibre E4 can receive notifications, it can't answer calls. Battery life is similar to the Apple Watch Series 10, lasting around a day depending on usage. While the smarts may be more subdued on this option, if you’re after luxury, it’s hard to beat.

What to Look for in an Apple Watch Alternative in 2025

The Apple Watch might be the most popular smartwatch in the world, but plenty of people might want something more than what the wearable device can offer. For some, the Apple Watch is limited in function and style, or its price might be out of reach.

Meanwhile, a lot of tAndroid smartphone users can’t use the Apple Watch altogether because the two are just not compatible. With the wide range of Apple Watch alternatives, it might be intimidating to find the best smartwatch for you. IGN experts have put together a guide to make the selection process a little easier.

Compatibility

Although Apple Watch alternatives run different operating systems, the most popular one is Google WearOS. For the most part, it’s compatible with both iOS and Android devices via smartphone app and Bluetooth, but some manufacturers like Samsung and even Google itself restrict their watches to just Android smartphones. Make sure your smartphone is compatible with your smartwatch of choice.

Usability

What’s the difference between a fitness tracker and a smartwatch? These days, the line between them has blurred. However, this doesn’t mean they’re interchangeable, but rather just getting better at adapting features from one to the other.

A fitness tracker is smaller and primarily for tracking health goals, including heart rate monitoring, counting steps, calories burned, blood oxygen levels, and more. It might even include workout specific modes, like running, swimming, cycling, and others. For example: The Fitbit Sense 2 is a fitness tracker that has some features of a smartwatch, like smartphone notifications, and contactless payments, but its main use is for fitness and health.

A smartwatch is typically a bit bigger, looks more like a traditional watch compared to a fitness tracker, and can handle additional tasks, like notifications, emails, messaging, maps, and more. Smartwatches can track fitness and health goals too, but most likely can’t track and record more detailed and workout-specific data.

If you want a wearable device for the gym, then go with a dedicated fitness tracker. For that plus everything else, go with a smartwatch.

Price

One of the biggest drawbacks of the Apple Watch is its price with its least expensive model being the Apple Watch SE, which starts at $249. However, you can get a decent alternative for as little as $100 with the Amazfit Active 2. There are a lot of alternatives that can do just about everything an Apple Watch can do, but at a lower price. The closest comparison to the Apple Watch is the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7.

Style

Let’s face it, most people looking for an Apple Watch alternative aren’t happy with Apple’s rounded-corners square design. Tech manufacturers like Samsung, Google, Garmin, and others have seized this design “flaw” and introduced smartwatches with circular designs, like traditional watches. Simply put, there are a wide range of smartwatches that just look like a watch — which is very appealing to a lot of people.

If you’re looking for a smartwatch with a circular design, go with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 or Google Pixel Watch 3. At first glance, they look like traditional watches, but can do just about everything the Apple Watch can do. If you’re an iPhone user, but want a completely round design in your smartwatch, then go with the Garmin Venu 3 or TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4. Both are compatible with the iPhone and look pretty slick, too.

Apple Watch Alternatives FAQ

What's the difference between a smartwatch and a fitness tracker?

Both smartwatches and fitness trackers focus on tracking your health and fitness, offering a range of sensors for better insights. Smartwatches take things further by providing additional smarts, like app notifications, phone call support, and even music playback. They also feature larger screens and tend to offer GPS support. Some even come with cellular connectivity for an additional charge on your phone bill. Fitness trackers usually pull ahead in battery life due to their smaller size and more limited feature set. Still, there is a good deal of overlap between smartwatches and fitness trackers.

Do all smartwatches support cellular service?

While you can get an Apple Watch with support for cellular service, not all smartwatches will offer this feature. The Google Pixel Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch are two alternatives that have the option to add this feature. However, it costs more to purchase a watch with cellular support, and then there’s another monthly fee added to your phone bill to support it.

Even without cellular, many smartwatches can perform typical features of the best smartphones, like receiving notifications, responding to texts, and answering calls when connected to a phone via Bluetooth or on a Wi-Fi network. If you don’t have any way to access the internet, then a smartwatch won’t be the most useful.

Do I need a smartphone to use a smartwatch?

While a smartphone isn’t always necessary to use a smartwatch, it’s certainly recommended. Some smartwatches support cellular and can function like tiny smartphones. However, if you don’t have that connectivity, the majority of smartwatch features won’t be accessible or as useful without a phone.

Disney's Live-Action Snow White Hits Digital After Re-Release Flop

Disney has spent the past few years going all-in on live-action remakes of the studio's animated classics. Some of these releases were hits at the box office, notably 2019’s The Lion King and 2017’s Beauty and the Beast, but it's safe to say that none have achieved the same level of cultural impact as the original films.

While almost all of these releases have been mired in at least some pushback or controversy, Snow White seemed to be a tipping point. Though Siddhant Adlakha's Snow White review describes star Rachel Zegler as "remarkable," the film as a whole didn't recieved much praise. (Gal Gadot's acting even became a meme over on TikTok.)

After a relatively unsuccessful theatrical run, Disney’s live-action Snow White is now available on digital. While the movie hasn’t made it to Disney+ quite yet, that does mean families (or anyone curious) can watch the movie at home.

Disney’s Snow White Now Available on Digital

Snow White arrives on digital less than two months after the movie’s initial release in theaters. Though $200 million in global box office revenue is nothing to scoff at, it’s still a ways away from the $250 million Variety reports Disney invested in the project.

This gap comes as no surprise; Snow White had struggled at the box office since its opening weekend. The movie appeared to be quickly forgotten in family night movie discourse in the wake of another live-action adaptation: A Minecraft Movie.

For whatever reason, Disney later decided to pull a Morbius and re-release the movie in theaters for Mother's Day weekend in May. The movie's performance at this stage was even more grim, achieving just $330,000 in revenue across almost 2,000 theaters.

Does this spell the beginning of the end for Disney’s live-action remakes? Who knows. We can never predict what lesson film execs will decide to take away from this kind of financial disappointment. In the wake of Snow White, Disney has put a "pause" on its recently-announced Tangled remake. Meanwhile, the live-action Lilo & Stitch movie is still set to hit theaters on May 23.

What I do know for sure is that box office flops like this tend to foster a decent amount of curiosity. If you’re someone who couldn’t quite justify a trip to the theater but ultimately needs to witness Gal Gadot’s performance as the Evil Queen, you're in luck.

Snow White Is Also Available on DVD, Blu-ray

Preorders have also gone live for the physical release of Snow White, which includes a DVD, Blu-ray, and a Collector’s Edition 4K steelbook, all of which are set to release on June 24. We've also rounded up tons of upcoming Blu-rays if you're in the middle of building your collection.

When Will Snow White Stream on Disney+?

The original 1937 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has been streaming on the Disney-owned service since its inception in 2019, and the live-action version will certainly be joining it at some point. Recent Disney releases, like Mufasa: The Lion King and Moana 2, landed on Disney+ around three months after their initial release in theaters. Assuming a similar timeline for the fairest of them all, we should see Snow White on Disney+ by the end of June.

HP Has the Lowest Price on a GeForce RTX 5090 Prebuilt Gaming PC

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card is still night impossible to find a standalone GPU, and your best bet is to get it pre-installed in a ready-made gaming computer. HP is currently the only online retailer I've found that has an RTX 5090 prebuilt gaming PC priced under $5,000. You'll need to follow my directions to configure the options, and HP's estimated June 3 delivery seems pretty optimistic, but if you're bent on getting one of these cards then you have to put in the effort.

HP Omen 45L RTX 5090 Prebuilt Gaming PC for $4,490

Follow the directions below to properly configure this PC:

  1. Click Here
  2. Select Graphics Card - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 (+$1,600)
  3. Select Chassis - Front Bezel Black Glass and 1200W Power Supply (+$60)
  4. Proceed to shopping cart, where price should show as $4,489.99 shipped (plus tax)

The RTX 5090 Is the Most Powerful Graphics Card Ever

The Nvidia 50-series GPUs were officially announced at CES 2025. Although this time around Nvidia has prioritized adding AI features and DLSS 4 technology to improve gameplay performance over the previous generation GPUs, the RTX 5090 has still emerged as the most powerful consumer GPU on the market even if you only factor hardware-based raster performance. This card boasts a 25%-30% uplift over the RTX 4090 and with 32GB of GDDR7 VRAM.

The Omen 45L is HP's Flagship Gaming Chassis

The Omen 45L is HP's flagship gaming PC and, in our opinion, one of the best prebuilt gaming PCs. This is HP's roomiest chassis with plenty of cooling in the form of four 120mm fans for system airflow and an additional 240mm to 360mm all-in-one liquid cooling solution for the CPU. This PC is equipped with a generous 1,200W 80Plus Gold power supply and current-gen components like an Intel Z790 motherboard, Kingston FURY DDR5 RGB memory modules, and a WD Black M.2 SSD. The chassis itself looks great with its blend of steel and tempered glass and RGB lighting. Although it certainly exudes a very premium feel, it doesn't scream "gamer" like some other PC cases.

Palia Review in Progress

There’s something uniquely satisfying about putting down roots in a sleepy town in games like Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, or Disney Dreamlight Valley. Palia evolves this tradition to great effect, injecting large-scale multiplayer into that tried-and-true formula. After 50 hours of chopping down trees, hunting woodland critters, decorating my home, and hanging out with my fellow Palians, I’ve had a fantastic time catching up on all I’ve missed since the early days of the beta. I still have to dive into the new content and loads of updates that arrived today with its console launch and first major expansion, Elderwood, but I am eager to do so ahead of my final review.=

Palia is a cozy life sim with one major tweak: you’re in an online world that occasionally compels you to come out of your shell and interact with other humans – a sometimes Herculean task for the introverts often drawn to this genre. As you explore, you’ll encounter others out in the shared world going about their business, and are encouraged (or sometimes required) to cooperate with them. For example, you’ll get a buff for fishing with others and will find magical trees that can only be chopped down with the help of one or more friends. This has led to a community that’s astoundingly positive and helpful, with the vast majority of the public chat being PSAs from players who have found a valuable resource they’d like to share with strangers, then waiting for minutes on end for everyone to assemble before collecting it as a group. I spend a lot of time playing multiplayer games defined by the community’s potent toxicity and savage greed, so this kind of culture has truly been a shock to my system that I’m still adjusting to.

Although multiplayer is its signature twist, you can still do the vast majority of Palia’s activities by yourself. There’s also just a whole heck of a lot for you to do however you decide to tackle it, all in service of building up your home and improving your relationships with the NPC townsfolk. The usual zen-like staples like cooking and catching bugs are all here and actually quite good – the fishing minigame, for example, is less mindless than you usually find in the genre, having you tug and pull on your rod as the fish leaps into the air and puts up a fight. There’s even a few less common options like hunting, where you’ll pick off poor critters who burrow into the ground and leap into trees as you pepper them with arrows. While an absence of stress is an intentional focus of Palia’s design, it sometimes tries a bit too hard to accomplish that goal, like in how your arrows will magically home in on your target incredibly aggressive, sometimes turning corners to aid your aim. I’m all for a laid back experience, but it can be a bit obnoxious when you’re trying to line up a shot and the magnetism training wheels curve your arrow toward a different creature altogether, frustrating what’s supposed to be a chill activity.

Palia has a surprisingly full-featured main story as well. It has you exploring ancient ruins to uncover the truth about a world which was once populated by humans who are curiously gone now, and the dark history of magic that seemingly caused the collapse of society. This adventure is much more light-hearted than that might sound though, and you’re mostly just given opportunities to learn about the world and hang out with the characters who accompany you on quests while you platform around and solve simple puzzles. Per Palia’s adherence to cozy virtues, none of this is particularly demanding, and the mainline quests can be completed in a matter of hours if you focus on them, but I enjoyed diving just a tad deeper into the world and the break from grinding for iron ore to craft the next piece of furniture I just couldn’t live without. The story was quite incomplete ahead of the Elderwood expansion though, so I’m intrigued to see where it picks up after that abrupt end.

Palia has one of the better home building systems I’ve seen.

Then there’s other minigames that further mix things up, like a hotpot-themed card game I spent way too much time playing, or a surprisingly intricate platforming puzzle that took me hours to master. Sometimes these experiments exceed Palia’s grasp, like the platforming puzzles in particular, which are held back by clunky controls that don’t seem like they were designed with precision in mind. Climbing can be a quite irritating experience as your character will let go of surfaces inconsistently, sending you plummeting to your death. Thankfully the stakes in taking these spills are always very low, so there’s not much to lose aside from a bit of your time wasted, but it can definitely make some of the quests feel a bit tacked on. Other times, you’ll find yourself doing a sliding picture puzzle and think “y’know, this is pretty nice,” so I mostly found myself happy they took these shots nonetheless.

Of course, the purpose behind all these various undertakings is to gain as much gold as you can to upgrade and decorate your home, and Palia has one of the better home building systems I’ve seen. Rather than giving you no control over the blueprint of your house like in Animal Crossing or Disney Dreamlight Valley, or making you monkey around with a building mode that has you placing individual walls like The Sims, Palia favors a modular system: You unlock schematics for pieces of a home that you can freely snap onto various parts of your building, making it easy to design the general layout without having to get lost in the weeds. Then, once you’ve built your place, you can decorate it down to the most minute detail, dragging furniture, dolls, and cups around on a grid to make it just so. I could probably spend dozens of hours on this part of Palia alone, were it not for my insatiable need for cold hard cash to fund my homestead expansion. But that desire to make your place exactly as awesome as you want it to be is a serious motivator that sent me out in search of lumber and iron ore time and time again.

Those resource grinds each have their own progression systems as well, as you level up by repeatedly going out into the world and bringing back your haul of raw materials and collectibles to sell. I played dozens of hours of Palia as part of an early preview way back before it was even in its current open beta (and had my save file from that time tragically deleted), and the biggest change has been that its progression systems for these activities are much more streamlined and feel less grindy. Now, as you plant trees and craft furniture, you’ll unlock new equipment like a loom for creating fabric or a furnace for creating glass. You’ll also get better tools to perform cozy chores with, like a hoe that lets you till land faster or a bow and arrows that will let you take down prey in fewer shots, each of which feels like a handy upgrade that shows up at exactly the right moment you start feeling a need for it. The timegating that sometimes boxes you out of marathoning through everything in other life sims is mercifully absent here for the most part, so you can move as fast or as slow as you care to.

The other major pursuit in Palia is in getting to know and develop relationships with its 25 NPC residents, most of whom are really well-written and have a lot more to them than meets the eye upon first glance. I quite enjoyed hanging out with the sarcastic and moody daughter of the mayor, Kenyatta, who worked the front desk with all the enthusiasm of April from Parks and Recreation – but after helping her down the extremely chaotic path of discovering what she’s passionate about in life, I grew to appreciate her in a less superficial way. Even characters I really didn't jive with, like the cryptid-obsessed hippy who annoyed me to no end, Elouisa, was at least entertainingly irritating and I’ve learned to appreciate how much her personality bothers me over time. (We’ve all got a friend like that, don’t we?) Most characters have an arc that takes place over several quests where they let you see a bit more of their personality as you forge a friendship. And, of course, if you’re looking for more than friendship you can partake in Palia’s quite strong dating mechanics to get yourself a girlfriend or boyfriend, or several of them – no judging here.

Relationships are the one area where timegating gets in the way.

Unfortunately, this is one area where timegating gets in the way of a good time, and is one of the only places Palia boxes you out. You’re only allowed to chat with each character once per in-game day (a 30-minute period of real time), which improves your social links a very small amount, and you can only give each character a gift once per real world day. So if you’re trying to finish a particular character’s story, you’ll have to log on with regularity and be subjected to the same rotation of brief banter before you’re able to make any real progress. This is especially painful early on when your citizenship in Kilima Village is dependent on having someone in town to vouch for you – a task that’s made impossible to do in a short span of time by timegating. When every other area of Palia lets you play to your heart’s content, it’s pretty annoying to see such an essential part of this slice of life block you from progressing at your own pace.

Palia has come a long way since I played it over a year ago, but one thing that remained true ahead of this latest update is that it’s still missing quite a bit. The two maps I’ve explored are fairly small, and though they’ve got nooks and crannies to run around, you can more-or-less see most of what’s available in a few hours. Social features, though awesome when they happen, still feel quite slim for a game where the killer feature is supposed to be its online functionality, and there aren’t enough activities that encourage group play. And although there are quite a few options for decorating your house, surprisingly little of it can be interacted with once placed. You can’t lie in bed, turn on the sink, or really do much of anything with most objects, which sometimes made me feel like I was building a museum rather than a home. They did add the ability to flick the light switches on and off, which is at least something, but there’s a lot missing. These are all issues likely to be built out in the future, and I’m interested to see if Elderwood helps at all, but I’m a bit surprised that some of these aren’t farther along all the same.

The other major issue with Palia has been its bugs and performance issues on PC, which have gotten remarkably better since I last played, but are still pretty common. I quite frequently see NPCs sink into the floor, sometimes altogether hidden underground to the point where I can’t interact with them, there’s a bunch of very visible pop-in that happens while you’re running around, and loading times when traveling between each section of the map feel far longer than they should. Playing on the Nintendo Switch is especially eyebrow raising, as everything looks pretty awful and runs significantly worse, to the point where I really can’t recommend it on that platform in the same way I enthusiastically would elsewhere.

I’ve put quite a bit of time into Palia over the past week and have had a hard time putting it down, even as I’ve completed all the major activities available before the Elderwood expansion arrives. I’m looking forward to seeing how it runs on the PS5 and Xbox, checking out the new area and quality of life improvements, and continuing my chase for unlimited money to flex on my friends with my meticulously decorated estate.

Where to Stream Novocaine Online in 2025

After a press tour that featured Jack Quaid looking progressively more beat up at a Clippers game, Novocaine arrived in theaters. The R-rated action comedy stars Quaid as a man who feels no pain, so it's starting to seem like 'The Boys' veteran goes out of his way to get covered in fake blood.

In her review for IGN, critic Lena Wilson states that “Novocaine offers more depth than its gimmicky 'man who feels no pain' premise may lead you to believe," with "clever storytelling and character writing that reminds us of a time when seeing movies in theaters was just plain fun.”

If you're planning to watch Novocaine at home, check out the details below.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: Preorder and Get Double the Storage and a $50 Gift Card for Free

Samsung has announced a new ultra-slim flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S25 Edge. It’s a lot like the Galaxy S25 that came out earlier this year, but it’s thinner – just 5.8mm thick. That’s thin, man. It’s light, too, weighing in at 163 grams. The phone releases May 30 and costs $1099.99. Preorders are live now (see it at Amazon, where it comes with a free $50 gift card), and you even get double the storage for free if you preorder.

Preorder Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge

Spec-wise, the Galaxy S25 Edge is pretty close to the S25 Plus. It runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chip. It has a 6.7-inch OLED display and Galaxy AI. However, it doesn’t have the telephoto camera lens — just a 12MP selfie camera, a 12MP ultra wide AF, and a 200MP wide-angle 2x optical-quality zoom lens. And because of the thin form factor, the battery doesn’t last as long (the official site says it has up to 24 hours of video playback).

You have three color options for this bad boy: titanium black, titanium icyblue, and titanium silver. They all look suitably classy, in my opinion, with nice coloring that adds to the sleek form factor. Even the selfie camera is just a tiny dot at the top of the display.

The Galaxy AI features include the ability to summarize notes and touch up the photos you take. If you’ve been looking for a thing, light phone that doesn’t skimp on power, this is probably your best bet. It’s the thinnest S-series phone Samsung has ever made.

Some previous ultra-thin phones, it should be noted, have had issues with bending in people’s pockets. That shouldn’t be a problem here, thanks to the titanium used in the casing, and the Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 face. Will the Galaxy S25 Edge be crowned the best smartphone on the market? We'll have to wait and see.

The Best HDMI Cables for Connecting Your PS5 and PS5 Pro

It might not be the most glamorous PS5 accessory, but when it comes to getting the most out of your console, having the right HDMI cable is more important than you may realize. The PlayStation 5 and the more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro are built for stunning graphics and ultra-smooth gameplay, and to fully experience that, you need an HDMI cable that can handle it. Fortunately, there are some great options that will ensure you're getting the best possible performance in 2025.

TL;DR – These Are the Best HDMI Cables for PS5:

The PS5 supports 8K@60Hz or 4K@120Hz, so you’ll want to choose an HDMI cable that’s designed to support, or even future-proof for, the latest features. While an improved connection is a great start, you'll also want to upgrade to a good PS5 TV or one of the best monitors for the PS5 to get the best-possible experience.

1. PowerA Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable

Best HDMI Cable Overall

An officially licensed HDMI cable for your PS5, the PowerA Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable is a sure bet. Yes, it comes with a premium price tag, but if you want the best of the best, you’ll have to part with a bit of cash. Supporting HDMI 2.1, this HDMI cable can output 4K@120Hz, and even 8K@60Hz (though it's not true 8K – not yet, anyway).

Matching the console’s simple, clean aesthetics, the PowerA Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable is equally minimalist, durable, and sports gold-plated connectors. At 10ft long, you’ll have plenty of wiggle room between your console and your display should you need it.

2. Belkin HDMI 2.1 Ultra High Speed

Best High-Speed HDMI Cable

The Belkin HDMI 2.1 Ultra High Speed is one of the priciest HDMI cables for PS5, but that’s because you’re paying to future-proof your setup. With HDMI 2.1, the cable can handle speeds of up to 48Gbps, more than your PS5 or PS5 Pro will ever output.

With slim profile connectors, this HDMI cable fits nicely into the back of your PS5 and your TV. Everything here is high quality. Knowing you can game in 4K@120Hz with a compatible display, or watch videos in 8K@60Hz (if your TV or monitor can handle it) warrants the higher price tag. It's likely you'll even be able to use this for the PlayStation 6 when it eventually arrives, making this a worthwhile long-term investment.

3. Cable Matters 8K Right Angle HDMI Cable

Best Angled HDMI Cable

If your TV is mounted to the wall or you’re limited on space, sometimes a standard HDMI cable won’t fit. Enter the Cable Matters 8K Right Angle HDMI Cable. Instead of taking a risk and bending the HDMI cable or blocking ports, why not invest in a right-angle cable from the outset?

Since it's HDMI 2.1, the cable can handle the 4K/120Hz refresh rate on your PS5 like any other HDMI. The cable is only available at 6.6ft long, but at least it comes in two colorways: black or gray.

Beyond being angled to prevent bending, this HDMI cable is braided to resist breakage or fraying and the connectors are gold-plated to prevent corrosion. Even the connector housing is metal to further improve longevity, so it should last well until we get a PS6 (that might actually support 8K gaming).

4. Amazon Basics HDMI Cable

Cheapest HDMI Cable

If you’re on a budget and need an HDMI cable that’s going to allow you to make the most of the PS5 and PS5 Pro's 4K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, you simply can’t go wrong here. The Amazon Basics HDMI Cable does what it says on the box – there are no fancy features, braided cable, or right angles – but it costs a little over $7 and is capable of speeds of up to 48Gbps.

While the standard length could pose a problem for some, this HDMI cable is also available in 6ft and 10ft options. It’s incredibly affordable and can easily be a suitable replacement for the included HDMI cable you get with the PS5 if you have lost it, broken it, or need a spare.

5. Anker 8K HDMI Cable

Best Everyday HDMI Cable

Anker is a well-known brand; it’s reliable, and that’s what you need when you invest in a HDMI cable for gaming. The Anker 8K HDMI Cable supports 8K@60Hz and 4K@120Hz, making it the perfect PS5 console companion. Since it’s HDMI 2.1, you could use it to connect your monitor to your PC, too, should you need.

While there are definitely more affordable HDMI cables available, if you want a solid cable that’s going to last a long time, Anker’s is a no-brainer. Anker claims it has a "1,000 bend lifespan" based on lab testing; based on our experience so far and with other Anker products like power banks, it sounds absolutely plausible.

6. Cable Matters Premium Braided HDMI Cable

How to Pick the Best HDMI Cable for PS5

You could spend a lot of money on a HDMI cable for your PS5 when you don’t have to. With lots of marketing jargon, it’s easy to get lost and spend over and above for what you need.

The PS5 can output 4K@120Hz or 8K@60Hz, and while many PS5 games aren't capable of reaching those high frame rates, it's still a good idea to have a proper cable for when they can. HDMI 2.1 is the standard that supports this, so if you have a TV or monitor capable of this resolution, you should look for an HDMI 2.1 cable.

The PS5 Pro takes things a step further with its support for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-enhanced feature that boosts games up to 4K while maintaining a higher frame rate. Given that AI-upscaling is a major selling point of the PS5 Pro, it makes sense to grab an HDMI 2.1 cable ready to make the most of its abilities. Just be sure you’ve also got a gaming TV that can handle it, too!

If you’re on a tight budget, don’t have a compatible TV, or just need a spare cable, you could get away with a HDMI 2.0 cable – but this can only reach 4K@60Hz. HDMI 2.1 cables are usually just a couple of bucks more than HDMI 2.0 cables, so it might be a better idea to grab a durable HDMI 2.1 cable to future-proof your setup anyway.

Beyond the HDMI specification, basics like length, durability, and other design features should be taken into account. You need to assess the distance between your PS5 and TV to give yourself enough slack. This is especially true if you don't have a good TV stand with holes in the back for cords to slip through. The standard sizes are around 3ft, 6ft, and 10ft, but you can find cables shorter or longer depending on needs. Right angle cables are ideal for wall-mounted TVs or TVs that are just super close to the wall, helping to prevent kinks or fraying.

When it comes to build quality, you’ll quickly discover that some HDMI cables are built better than others. If you just plan on plugging the cable into your TV and console once and leaving it there, durability shouldn’t be a major issue. However, if you’ll be shuffling the cable between TVs and devices, stronger nylon braided cables or others tested to last thousands of bends are good choices. Finding an option with a secure connector that won’t break when pulled on is also essential.

PS5-compatible HDMI Cables FAQ

Are expensive HDMI cables worth it?

If you have a modern 4K or 8K TV, you shouldn’t get sticker shock when looking for an HDMI cable. At these high resolutions, the amount of data the PS5 is pushing to your PC is massive, and cheaper cables run the risk of corrupting that data by using lackluster materials. However, if you’re playing your PS5 on an older display, you might want to consider either upgrading your TV, or opting for a cheaper HDMI cable.

What kind of HDMI cable does the PS5 and PS5 Pro use?

To get the most out of your PS5 and PS5 Pro, you should use a HDMI 2.1 cable. This supports 4K@120Hz, or 8K@60Hz, providing the best gaming experience.

Does the PS5 come with a HDMI 2.1 cable?

Yes, the PS5 does come with a HDMI 2.1 cable. You don’t need to buy any additional cables unless you want a longer cable, one with features like braiding, or you need a spare.

Is HDMI 2.1 backward compatible?

Yes, HDMI 2.1 is backward compatible. If you plug a HDMI 2.1 cable into a HDMI 2.0 port, it will still work. If you plug a HDMI 2.0 cable into your PS5, it will still work, but it won’t offer support for the same video output.

Will older HDMI standards work with the PS5?

Yes, the PS5 and PS5 Pro support older standard HDMI cables, including 2.0 and 1.4. The only downfall is you’ll be missing out on the full capabilities of the console. HDMI 2.0 can only hit 4K@120Hz while HDMI 1.4 maxes out at 4K@30Hz.
