FTC 'Click to Cancel' rule that was annoying some services cancelled by the courts

The Federal Trade Commission's so-called "Click to Cancel" rule that would have required single-click subscription cancellation everywhere like it is on the App Store now has been killed off, after a U.S. Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling.

App subscriptions in the App Store are reasonably simple to cancel

The rule, which would force companies to make it clear and simple for users to cancel subscriptions and services, would've made lives easier for consumers across the United States. However, the ruling by the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals effectively leaves the rule ineffectual.

While the rule was finalized in October 2024, the implementation of the rule was delayed until July 14. However, that is no longer a possibility following the ruling.

Ikea's Dirigera smart home hub

Homeowners wanting smart home devices have often turned to Ikea for their connected floor lamps and speakers. However, while useful, most of the hardware requires intermediary devices like the Dirigera hub to work with Apple HomeKit.

The furniture producer intends to go big on smart home tech, and to also simplify connectivity at the same time. Speaking to The Verge, Ikea's David Granath said that Ikea is going to be adding considerably to its smart home lineup.

Returning Steve Jobs took over Apple 28 years ago

In July of 1997, five months after Apple bought NeXT and brought him back into the fold, Steve Jobs became Apple's de facto interim CEO, kicking off the most successful comeback by an executive in the history of American business.

The departure and return of Steve Jobs from Apple is as central to Apple history as just about anything else. It's been pored over in numerous books, two different feature films, more than one documentary, and rather more than a few articles.

Both his exit and his coming back got ugly at times, too, but things happening the way they did helped make the many subsequent Apple triumphs possible.

Apple wants to screen real F1 races after its film's success

Apple TV+ is reportedly looking to expand its sports coverage with a bid for the rights to F1 motor racing, specifically following the success of its Brad Pitt movie.

If you thought Apple's constant promotion of F1 would end after the film leaves theaters and starts streaming, you might be wrong. According to the Financial Times, Apple is in talks to acquire the US rights to screen F1, once the organizers' current broadcast contract ends in 2026.

Apple tends to try buying worldwide rights to programming, but that doesn't appear to be possible this time. At present, Disney-owned EPSN has the US rights, and it's that contract which is due to expire.

Eero 7 Max mesh router review: The best kind of Wi-Fi overkill

The Eero Max 7 can easily blanket your home with extremely high-speed mesh Wi-Fi 7 and provide routing duties for a 10-gigabit wired network, but at this price, you should wait for sales before going nuts.

Eero Max 7 review: High spec Wi-Fi, possibly overkill

Home Wi-Fi is a lesser thought-about area of computing. People care more about whether their ISP-supplied router can cover enough of their home to do a good job than fixing it by buying more Wi-Fi access points.

Those who do go for the do-it-yourself approach also care more about coverage than capability. This is fine for small households with more modest bandwidth needs, but for larger families and power users, other factors become important and make the Wi-Fi upgrade more expensive.

Apple's design team leadership in flux once again with Jeff Williams retirement

The legendary Apple design team hasn't had much luck holding onto leadership since Jony Ive left, and with COO Jeff Williams retiring, the leadership role will shift to CEO Tim Cook.

Those keeping score at home will know that Apple CEO Tim Cook is an excellent industry supply chain strategist that launched Apple into what it is today. Cook isn't exactly known for his merits in industrial or software design, if he has any to claim.

However, it doesn't matter because by the end of 2025, the design team at Apple will be reporting directly to Tim Cook. The COO Jeff Williams, who is currently overseeing the design team, will be retiring later in 2025.

In a report from IDC on Tuesday, global PC shipments in the second quarter of 2025 grew 6.5 percent year-over-year. The growth means there was a total volume of 68.4 million shipments globally in the quarter.

However, while most major PC companies saw some improvement, Apple seemingly gained the most. The figures for the top five PC vendors in terms of worldwide PC shipments puts Apple in fourth place with 6.2 million shipments in Q2 2025. This gives it a 9.1% market share.

You can use sous vide to help iPhone repairs, but please don't

It turns out that you can unglue an iPhone using sous vide to start screen repairs. While interesting, repairing an iPhone using a water bath is fraught with peril.

Repairing an iPhone means having to tackle Apple's famous use of adhesives. Apple is known for being extremely... generous... when applying glue to its products to hold components together and keep water out.

It turns out that you can use a very hot water bath to soften that adhesive, assuming you take proper protections and are a little bit lucky.

Apple tends to bunch together its operating system build releases, both for the final public versions and while they are still being tested. For the "26" generation being tested out, tvOS 26 has lagged behind the rest of the pack.

Apple seeded the third developer betas of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, and visionOS 26 on July 7, with tvOS 26 being the only absent build. That was corrected on July 8, with the issuing of the third developer beta build of tvOS 26.

Future Apple Pencil could write on iPhone, MacBook Pro, or even Apple Watch

New research from Apple shows it is considering an Apple Pencil that does not require a touch-sensitive iPad screen, and instead can write or draw using any surface.

Two diagrams illustrate a pencil-shaped device with a rotating tip or trackball and an optical sensor interacting with a surface. Various labels identify parts.

Apple applies for many hundreds of patents every year, but even when one is granted, it's no guarantee we'll ever see the technology used in a product. But it is often a sign that Apple is pursuing a particular idea, such as how it's previously investigated adding Apple Pencil support to the iPhone.

Now a newly-granted patent called "Input device with optical sensors," proposes a system that would let a future Apple Pencil be used on — or above — any surface at all. It's about moving all of the sensors into the Apple Pencil, rather than relying on it interacting with ones in an iPad.

Details on AirPods with cameras revealed by new research

Newly-revealed Apple research details just how AirPods could have cameras added to them — and exactly what benefits that would bring.

Back in June 2024, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that infra-red cameras would come to AirPods, specifically to help enhance Spatial Audio in the Apple Vision Pro. He then doubled down on this a year later, saying that camera-equipped AirPods will be launched in 2026.

Now a newly-granted patent called "Wavelength mixing for optical systems," proves that Apple has at least been investigating the idea. As ever with a patent, it seeks to describe technology without particularly giving examples of its practical use, but for once, it gives a little list of devices such cameras could be fitted to.

Atomic Stealer infects macOS via illegitimate software, and now it has a backdoor

Atomic macOS Stealer, also known as AMOS, has been around since 2023, and was immediately a hit for cyber criminals wanting to steal data from infected Macs. While it was popular enough amongst bad actors to warrant the creation of a new variant in 2024, its 2025 update is a potential nightmare for victims.

According to MacPaw cybersecurity division Moonlock, a version of AMOS has been found with a major update, adding an embedded backdoor for the first time.
