Unsurprisingly, iPhone 17 rumored to come in four colors including blue

In a less than earthshaking leak, a new report claims that the expected slimline iPhone 17 Air will be issued in four different colors — just like so many iPhone ranges before it.

Unless you're hanging on to an alpine green 2022 iPhone 13 Pro, having a colorful iPhone means having bought on of the regular models. Where the iPhone and iPhone Plus ranges get all the colors, the Pro ones rarely do.

So as the expected iPhone 17 Air is predicted to replace the iPhone 16 Pro at the lower end of the lineup, it is not shocking to hear that it will come in various colors. But leaker Majin Bu claims to know what those colors are, and has now shown an image purporting to be them.

Battle of the leakers: iPhone 17 Air may get binned A19 Pro chip, it may not

Three sleek smartphones in gold, white, and mint green are aligned against a gradient background, showcasing their rear cameras and minimalist design.
Renders of what the iPhone 17 Air could look like

Apple's current chip strategy for the iPhone lineup is to include a Pro version of a chip in its Pro models, and a lesser-powered non-Pro variant in its standard versions. For the iPhone 17 Air, it may go down a different path.

According to serial leaker Fixed Focus Digital in a Weibo post, the iPhone 17 will be the only model to have the A19 chip. It will also be the model with the least memory at 8GB.

Apple wants to update boxed Macs in store like it does for iPhone

Apple is laying the groundwork to let stores update macOS on sealed Macs wirelessly before sale, mirroring a system it already uses for iPhones.

Apple is increasingly going wireless

With macOS 26, codenamed Tahoe, Apple's latest beta includes signs of work on a retail system for updating Macs in their boxes. The system would resemble Apple's "Presto" technology, which enables Apple Stores to update iPhones still sealed in their retail packaging.

That approach ensures devices are on the latest iOS version before they reach buyers. It reduces headaches such as forced day-one updates.

FTC 'Click to Cancel' rule that was annoying some services cancelled by the courts

The Federal Trade Commission's so-called "Click to Cancel" rule that would have required single-click subscription cancellation everywhere like it is on the App Store now has been killed off, after a U.S. Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling.

App subscriptions in the App Store are reasonably simple to cancel

The rule, which would force companies to make it clear and simple for users to cancel subscriptions and services, would've made lives easier for consumers across the United States. However, the ruling by the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals effectively leaves the rule ineffectual.

While the rule was finalized in October 2024, the implementation of the rule was delayed until July 14. However, that is no longer a possibility following the ruling.

Returning Steve Jobs took over Apple 28 years ago

The departure and return of Steve Jobs from Apple is as central to Apple history as just about anything else. It's been pored over in numerous books, two different feature films, more than one documentary, and rather more than a few articles.

Both his exit and his coming back got ugly at times, too, but things happening the way they did helped make the many subsequent Apple triumphs possible.

If you thought Apple's constant promotion of F1 would end after the film leaves theaters and starts streaming, you might be wrong. According to the Financial Times, Apple is in talks to acquire the US rights to screen F1, once the organizers' current broadcast contract ends in 2026.

Apple tends to try buying worldwide rights to programming, but that doesn't appear to be possible this time. At present, Disney-owned EPSN has the US rights, and it's that contract which is due to expire.

Eero 7 Max mesh router review: The best kind of Wi-Fi overkill

The Eero Max 7 can easily blanket your home with extremely high-speed mesh Wi-Fi 7 and provide routing duties for a 10-gigabit wired network, but at this price, you should wait for sales before going nuts.

Eero Max 7 review: High spec Wi-Fi, possibly overkill

Home Wi-Fi is a lesser thought-about area of computing. People care more about whether their ISP-supplied router can cover enough of their home to do a good job than fixing it by buying more Wi-Fi access points.

Those who do go for the do-it-yourself approach also care more about coverage than capability. This is fine for small households with more modest bandwidth needs, but for larger families and power users, other factors become important and make the Wi-Fi upgrade more expensive.

Those keeping score at home will know that Apple CEO Tim Cook is an excellent industry supply chain strategist that launched Apple into what it is today. Cook isn't exactly known for his merits in industrial or software design, if he has any to claim.

However, it doesn't matter because by the end of 2025, the design team at Apple will be reporting directly to Tim Cook. The COO Jeff Williams, who is currently overseeing the design team, will be retiring later in 2025.
