Alongside iOS 26 and Apple's other next-gen operating systems, WWDC saw the debut of Xcode 26, which contains references to an unreleased Apple Vision Pro model.


On June 9, Apple previewed its latest assortment of operating systems, all of which share the same "26" version number and "Liquid Glass" design language. Shortly after the keynote, Apple rolled out the first developer betas of iOS 26 and Xcode 26.

Xcode is an application used by developers to create third-party applications for Apple platforms. As such, it includes operating system and device names, but it appears as though Apple accidentally included the name of an unreleased product with Xcode 26.

In 2025, Apple slapped a new coat of paint on its operating systems at WWDC and called it good — but perhaps there was a chance that it actually had planned something entirely different.


WWDC 2025 was certainly one of the more subdued I've personally seen. Granted, I am admittedly one of the newer Mac users to AppleInsider staff — I made the switch in 2019.

But even in 2019, we had all the excitement of a new operating system: iPadOS. This change would ultimately cement the iPad as its own thing, and not just a larger iPhone.

The new Apple Projected Media Profile expands what video formats work with visionOS, increasing the content library and making inbound headset releases more attractive to consumers.


One of the features of Apple Vision Pro is the ability to enjoy content that you wouldn't necessarily be able to view on a normal screen. For the headset, this has so far included 2D and 3D content, Spatial footage, and Apple Immersive Video, but Apple is making more video formats available for people to use.

Announced during the WWDC 25 Platforms State of the Union, the changes to visionOS 26 include a new addition called the Apple Projected Media Profile (APMP). With APMP, visionOS now supports content produced in 180-degree, 360-degree, and wide field-of-view formats.

Apple's iOS 26 only made its debut on June 9, and researchers have already found mentions of unreleased hardware in the operating system code.


At WWDC, the iPhone maker revealed its latest assortment of operating systems, all of which bear the same "26" version number and design language, dubbed 'Liquid Glass'. The first developer betas of iOS 26 and its counterparts were rolled out shortly after the keynote, and a surprising discovery has since been made.

iOS 26 features an explicit mention of the as-of-yet unreleased AirPods Pro 3, alongside the current AirPods Pro 2 and original AirPods Pro. This is the second time this has happened, as an Apple software release on May 15 included the phrase "AirPods Pro 2 or later."

The iOS 26 Camera app overhaul is one for content creators, simultaneously streamlining the UI while also making managing formats and resolutions less frustrating.


The Camera app has always been an important way for Apple to sell its iPhone to consumers. With a reasonably simple interface, it allowed for images to be quickly taken and stored in Photos.

With some digging, it also provided ways to accentuate the shots in different ways, such as panoramas. It also handled video, with users able to take advantage of things like recording in ProRES video or in LOG format.

On June 9, at its annual Worldwide Developers' Conference, the iPhone maker finally unveiled the long-rumored visionOS-style redesign we were all waiting for. The company's latest operating systems all received a revamped user interface with a new material dubbed 'Liquid Glass.'

Apple says that Liquid Glass uses real-time rendering to imitate the way glass refracts light, and explains that the new material reacts to movement dynamically with specular highlights. It's used across various user interface elements, including buttons, switches, app icons, the Lock Screen, Control Center, and more.

Apple software chief Craig Federighi confirmed Monday that promised artificial intelligence upgrades to Siri have been delayed, saying the company needs more time to meet quality standards before launching the features in iOS 26.


In a WWDC 2025 interview with YouTuber iJustine, Federighi said the new Siri features were working internally but didn't perform well enough to ship.

Apple originally previewed major Siri upgrades at WWDC 2024, including more natural conversations, richer contextual understanding, and the ability to perform multi-step actions. At the time, many of those features were expected to ship in 2025.

Apple has launched a new Games app as part of iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, aiming to bring together Apple Arcade titles, Game Center activity, and App Store games in one place. The company announced the app on June 9, 2025, during its WWDC keynote.

It's not just Intel code — after a period of undeath, Time Capsule's time is coming, with Apple cutting off support for Time Machine backups using the hardware in macOS 27.


Time Capsules, Apple's long-discontinued network hardware, allowed users to back up their Macs and hardware over a home network. However, the days of the hardware still being usable by Mac users are running out.

Long-awaited improvements to audio recording on the iPad have arrived with the beta of iPadOS 26, and what was a severe failing is now a big advantage.


There is a strong argument that iPadOS 26 is Apple fixing the barn door after the iPad's most vocal proponents have left. But at least the new Local Capture is a very good bolt.

The problem was that Apple's tight iPad security meant however you switched between apps, you were still really running just one at a time. You couldn't use two, and that meant you couldn't be on a call and also record audio.

At the WWDC keynote, Apple revealed that Car Key will roll out to thirteen new car brands— though we're not entirely sure when.


The Car Key feature has allowed iPhone owners to open and start their cars using their mobile devices for quite some time now. And it looks like Apple has partnered with even more brands to add support for Car Key.

The clock is ticking for Intel apps on Mac, with only two more iterations of macOS providing full support for Intel-only apps Rosetta 2 — here's how to find out which of your apps may lose support in Fall 2027.


In 2020, Apple introduced Apple Silicon. While exciting, it also came with the caveat that Intel-based apps wouldn't be natively supported.

To ease the transition between Silicon and Intel, Apple promised the transition would be slow. Rosetta 2, a translation software that enables Silicon to run many Intel applications, has helped make the leap a little less jarring.

Apple appears to be working on a satellite-powered weather update feature for iPhones, according to evidence found in the iOS 26 developer beta.


The feature, discovered in the developer beta by Macworld, lets iPhones download weather forecasts via satellite. Apple didn't mention the tool at its WWDC 2025 keynote, but it's in the iOS 26 codebase and aimed at users in remote environments.

When iOS 26 arrives later in 2025, supported iPhones will allow users to receive "Weather Updates via Satellite" if standard network access is unavailable. Like Apple's existing Emergency SOS feature, users will need to aim their device at the sky to connect to a satellite.

Sometimes CarPlay is trigger happy and starts blasting out your audio before you've taken off your AirPods, or even got into your car. One new setting in iOS 26 should fix that forever.


There are two things that Apple has created tremendous technology for, but which don't work. One is how when you say "Siri," all your devices compare notes to figure out which one you didn't want, and then make that respond to you.

The other is that there is a brilliant feature across iOS, macOS, and iPadOS, that means your AirPods can automatically switch to whichever device you want to listen to. But while it works and usually works well, there is a problem — or there has been until iOS 26.

We've confirmed at WWDC that tvOS 26 is getting passthrough audio, which could allow a higher quality listening experience by disabling audio preprocessing on the Apple TV hardware, before hand-off to a sound system.


The Apple TV family is a very capable processing device for a set-top box, but one bone of contention has been audio processing. Apple has so far avoided adding passthrough audio features to the Apple TV, but that is seemingly changing.

A reference on the Apple Developer documentation for AVFAudio has an enumeration case for AVAudioContentSource for "passthrough."

Apple has added Intelligent Actions to let users automate their use of Apple Intelligence features, bringing Writing Tools and image creation into Shortcuts and letting users combine options. Here's what it looks like.

The iPhone has, over the years, received quite a few changes to how it handles batteries. Offering information on battery health and settings on how charging takes place, the options can be invaluable to extend the battery lifespan for the iPhone.

The much-rumored second generation of Apple's AirTags appears to be getting closer, as code snippets within iOS 26 refer to as yet unreleased features.


Apple did rather hit it out of the park with the original AirTags. They have become globally-used, pet-saving essentials and not been updated since its launch in April 2021.

Persistent rumors have repeatedly claimed that an updated second generation will be released during 2025, and now there's at least a hint they could be coming soon. That's according to code snippets first spotted in iOS 26 by MacWorld.

Developers relying on Rosetta 2 to keep their legacy code running should begin preparing now, as macOS 27 will be the last to provide full support for the translation technology.


When Apple revealed Apple Silicon in 2020, it shared that the transition would be slow to ensure users and software weren't lost along the way. With the announcement of macOS Tahoe during WWDC 2025, Apple has revealed that not only Intel Macs, but Rosetta 2 are on the chopping block.

WWDC 2025 revealed some upgraded tools for game developers that'll make games render at higher resolutions, faster frame rates, and improved ray tracing with fewer resources.


Apple didn't make that't much time for games during the WWDC 2025 keynote, but there are details surfacing about Apple's upgraded gaming APIs. Metal 4 and Game Porting Toolkit 3 are both here with updates that should make game development and execution easier.

Metal 4 is an API that lets developers build complex graphical interfaces or games with low-level, low-overhead hardware-accelerated processes. Game Porting Toolkit 3 is a tool that lets developers test and work to port games from external development platforms into Apple's.

If you watched the WWDC 2025 keynote on Monday, you probably heard the phrase "Liquid Glass" being thrown around quite a bit. Liquid Glass is Apple's newest design language; it doesn't just apply to one operating system — it was designed to unify them all.

That's right. It's shared across macOS, watchOS, visionOS, tvOS, iPadOS, and, of course, iOS. While it's not identical on each platform, it does certainly make them more similar than it does different.

It wasn't mentioned at the WWDC keynote, but it may have been obvious. Apple has now made it clear that macOS Tahoe is the end of the line for Intel Macs.


Admittedly, I missed my guess on this a bit. I though that September 2025 was probably be when Apple cut off support for Intel Macs in new versions of the operating system. This was until our very own Marko Zivkovic discovered an early compatibility list including a bunch of Intel hardware still.

Just the same, the writing has been on the wall. Apple's Intel-powered Mac days are coming to a close.

Apple has added the Phone app to macOS 26 Tahoe, allowing you to place calls on your iPhone while using your Mac.


Apple's Continuity features between the iPhone and Mac were expanded in 2024 with the introduction of iPhone Mirroring in iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. However, you couldn't actually place a phone call on your iPhone via the Mac, forcing users to pick up their mobile device.

This is annoying for people who may be familiar with using their Mac for almost everything that their iPhone would be usable for. The lack of phone call support meant that you had no choice but to have the iPhone nearby if you had to actually place or receive them.

Apple has now released the first developer beta versions of its iOS 26, macOS 26, and more, but it cannot be over-emphasized they will break some devices, and data will be lost. It doesn't have to happen to you.


There is now not one single iPhone app developer in the world who is not downloading and installing iOS 26. Developers of all types will be grabbing the right betas for them.

But hopefully not one single developer will be installing these betas on the devices they use for their day to day lives.

Apple has unveiled the newly redesigned iOS 26 Camera and Photos apps, which both surface the most commonly used controls, while adding the new 3D effect option.


Announced during WWDC 2025, Camera and Photos are getting new redesign to specifically address making it faster to take the right shot.

Apple is breaking down language barriers with a new Live Translation feature in iOS 26 powered by the company's on-device AI processing models.


The Live Translation feature, announced during the company's WWDC 2025 event, brings real-time language translation to iOS 26. The feature will work across Messages, FaceTime, and other apps.

For example, the Live Translation feature can immediately translate text into other languages as you type out a message in iMessage. As texts in other languages come in, the Apple Intelligence feature can instantly translate them for you.

Apple's WWDC 2025 announcements included changes to the Files app in iPadOS 26 that, well, frankly, makes it actually usable for the first time.


The Files app is a very handy tool on iPadOS for managing documents and folders, but it's not as user-friendly as it could be. And let's be honest, it was a bare-bones effort, that didn't work that well.

For a start, the List view was pretty limited in how it appeared, as you couldn't adjust how the columns appeared size-wise at all. It was also very clunky when it came to navigating between different folders, since you could only see the contents of one folder at a time.

Apple on Monday announced tvOS 26, its next-generation operating system for Apple TV, though only newer models of the company's set-top box will get its features.


The new tvOS 26 brings a redesigned user interface based on Apple's "Liquid Glass" design philosophy. The tvOS redesign uses real-time rendering to create a seemingly translucent material that reacts to its surroundings.

The update runs on everything the previous version of tvOS ran on. It will run on the Apple TV HD hardware, and any generation of the Apple TV 4K.

Running a Linux virtual machine on Mac can be resource-exhaustive, but Apple just made it much better in macOS 26 with native support for running Linux containers without the need for third-party apps like Docker.


WWDC 2025 had a busy keynote with the new Liquid Glass design and several ecosystem-wide upgrades. So, it may have been easy to miss one of the bigger feature updates targeted at developers.

A technical educator named Xe Iaso with a blog sharing their name spotted a quick snippet in Apple's newsroom post about the Containerization framework. This framework will enable developers to run a Linux container directly on the Mac.
