While Apple products can be controlled by many different means, including touch and voice, Apple is keen to work on new interface types. One of those under development is using a person's thoughts to control a device.

In a profile of Apple's work in the field, the Wall Street Journal profiled on Tuesday about its explorations in the field with startup Synchron. While Apple provides devices that could be controlled, Synchron creates the Stentrode implant that works as a brain computer interface.

The tablet market saw renewed energy in the first quarter as consumers upgraded devices bought during the height of COVID-19 lockdowns. With many of those iPads reaching the end of their typical lifecycle, Apple's growth came from a wave of replacements.

A temporary surge in imports, triggered by uncertainty over new U.S. tariffs, added to the momentum.

While Apple never reveals anything else about its next operating systems until each year's WWDC, it now regularly makes an exception for accessibility options. As it did with eye tracking in iOS 18 to let users control their iPhones and Macs, it's now bringing new accessibility features to all of its devices.

"At Apple, accessibility is part of our DNA," Tim Cook said in a statement. "Making technology for everyone is a priority for all of us, and we're proud of the innovations we're sharing this year."

There have been some interesting, and sometimes unfortunate, bugs with Apple's Messages and text-to-speech functions. The latest is a bit odd, but mostly affects names with a specific special character.

Some users may face difficulties stating names of specific brands, such as Ben & Jerry's, Dolce & Gabbana, Tiffany & Co., and so on, via Messages. Users who've tried to send voice messages with such brand names and phrases say their messages won't go through at all. The voice message will appear on the sender's phone, but not on the recipient's device.

Apple discontinuing support for older Home architecture with iOS 19

iOS 19 will not support for the older Home architecture.

The iPhone maker's move doesn't come as much of a surprise, however, as references to the change were discovered back in March 2025. Specifically, the third developer beta of iOS 18.4 contained text strings that effectively urged users to upgrade to the latest Apple Home architecture.

Though it was buried within the operating system, the text would've informed users of the need to "update now to avoid interruptions," as support for the older Apple Home architecture was going to "end soon."

The economically catastrophic and seemingly random tariff wars reached a new milestone on Monday as the Trump administration announced a new tariff deal with China. While Apple was exempt from much of the tariffs for now, it was still set to take a $900 million hit in the June quarter — which now may have been lessened.

According to a report from CNBC, President Trump said he spoke with Apple CEO Tim Cook on the phone after announcing the changes to the tariffs in China. He didn't share details of the conversation, only that Cook will "even up his numbers."

Apple's macOS Ventura remains available for Intel Macs such as the 2017 iMac and 2018 Mac mini, while Sonoma supports a broader range of Apple Silicon devices in addition to late-model Intel systems. The iPadOS 17.7.7 update is available for devices like the iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, and iPad 6th generation.

US & China pausing tariffs does not end the needless damage being done to consumers and businesses

The agreement by both the US and China to pause tariffs might make things easier in the very short term, and it may lead to a deal, but it hides that American consumers and firms will still have to deal with extreme expenses and other trade changes that do nothing but harm.

Trump continues to claim that it is foreign countries who will pay his tariffs, when in fact none of them will. The entire cost is always and invariably borne by the US firms importing goods from overseas, and so at least some of the cost is always passed on to the American consumer.

Then Trump claims that the tariffs will make companies relocate their manufacturing to the US, and it will not. The iPhone simply cannot be made in the States, there is not the labor skill nor the rare minerals needed.

Of all the US firms and consumers affected by Trump's "reciprocal" tariffs, ones importing goods from China have been hit the most. Even with the exemptions, Apple had to perform logistical gymnastics to get the costs of tariffs down to $900 million in the next quarter.

Epic has resubmitted "Fortnite" to Apple for review, aiming to bring the game back to the U.S. App Store nearly four years after the developer violated its agreement, and Apple pulled the title.

Fortnite could return to U.S. App Store soon

In August 2020, Epic willingly violated Apple's App Store rules by allowing players the option to purchase Fortnite's in-game currency directly, rather than through Apple's payment system. This violation not only resulted in the game's removal from the App Store, it kicked off a lengthy legal battle between the two tech giants.

Now it seems like Epic is looking to bring Fortnite back to the iPhone and iPad. On Friday, the company posted on X that it had submitted the game for review.

Apple said to use Brazil for lower-tariff iPhones, despite denials

Sao Paulo media claims that reports of iPhone manufacturer Foxconn expanding in Brazil is correct, even though Apple has said it will not increase production, and isn't trying to beat US tariffs.

For years, Apple has been working to reduce its over-reliance on China as a single or major source of iPhones, and those moves have seen its suppliers establish facilities in several other countries. According to Apple, however, its production in Brazil is expressly for making iPhones to be sold locally and as of late April 2025, will continue to be so.

Apple was responding to a report in local publication Exame, which claimed Foxconn was expanding its facilities in order that it could make iPhones for export to the US. The report was unclear on details, but did say that the expansion was at Foxconn's plant in Jundiai, southeast Brazil.

Inside Apple Weather: get the most out of Apple's own forecasting app

Apple's Weather app has existed for a long time, and has evolved a great deal in the last few years — here's everything you need to know to master the Weather app.

Apple's Weather app shipped with the original iPhone in 2007. And, since 2007, it's appeared on every iteration of the iPhone and the iPod Touch.

For the first seven years, Apple sourced its weather data from Yahoo! Weather. This was clunky, and awkward, as Yahoo! Weather used data from The Weather Channel to provide data to Apple.

News of Apple acquiring a company usually only breaks if Apple decides to announce it — as it did withPrimephonic, the basis for Apple Music Classical — or if the size of the deal requires regulatory oversight. Much more often, it acquires very many firms and absorbs their products and staff.

Now, as spotted by French site MacGeneration, Apple has had to declare several recent acquisitions to European regulators under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), and four are specifically companies working in AI.

iMac anniversary, split iPhone launch, and App Store upheaval on the AppleInsider Podcast

It's time to look back at the legendary iMac on its 27th birthday, but also time to look ahead to rumors of a future shakeup over iPhone launches — and the present day shakeup in the App Store, on the AppleInsider podcast.

Without the iMac in 1998, there wouldn't be an Apple today — and there probably wouldn't have been an Apple even in 1999. So much depended on that little machine, and so many of us have relished it and its later versions over nearly three decades now.

But over the next decade, according to Apple's Eddy Cue, it's possible we'll move on from the iMac's eventual successor, the iPhone. And if we do, it'll be because of AI, which Apple is now turning to for search as it prepares to lose its lucrative deal that sees Google the default search option on iOS.

After Apple and Amazon made an agreement in 2018 that would bring more Apple products to the online store, the number of resellers took a nosedive. A class action lawsuit sprung up hoping to reimburse consumers for allegedly paying more money for Apple products thanks to this price fixing "scheme."

As always, these lawsuits take time, and led to Apple and Amazon issuing a discovery order against the plaintiff in September 2023. According to a report from Reuters, the law firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro failed to disclose that the plaintiff didn't want to go through the discovery process and wanted out of the suit.

One strongly possible outcome of the Department of Justice's antitrust case against Google is that it may be forced to stop paying Apple to be the default search engine on iOS. Fortnite could return to the US App Store later this week.

Fortnite was removed from the U.S. App Store back in 2020, as a result of a lengthy legal battle between Epic Games and Apple. Epic attempted to circumvent Apple's then-30% commission by giving users the option to purchase in-game V-bucks externally, which led to the app's removal.
