Apple says not every Apple Silicon generation will get an Ultra

Apple released the M3 Ultra alongside M4 generation chips — but here's why we probably won't see the M4 Ultra.

On Wednesday, Apple announced its new Mac Studio. As anticipated, it launched with an M4 chip — the M4 Max, specifically.

But it also launched with the M3 Ultra. This left many people, including AppleInsider staff, wondering what Apple's reasoning was.

Apple's extortionate upgrade prices can't stop the MacBook Air being a bargain

Apple will never sell a cheap upgrade to anything, but choices the firm has made about the MacBook Air mean even it can't wring all that much more cash out of buyers.

Apple's Build to Order options for the MacBook Air start with a minor processor difference

Apple would never say this publicly, but so often you know it has released a version of a device solely to hit a price point. It wants to be able to say you can get a MacBook Air for under a thousand bucks, for instance, so it makes that more or less true.

Usually less. Usually the configuration you get for the lowest price of any Apple device is at the very best just about adequate, and usually not even that.

New M4 MacBook Air fixes the line's biggest problem

The new M4 MacBook Air fixes what's been a key problem with the line, and now supports up to two external monitors — and does so without the limitations of the previous M3 edition.

Using two external displays plus the MacBook Air's own screen

The newly launched MacBook Air brings with it a significant improvement for users of multiple monitors. While the previous M3 model featured support for two monitors, it was only possible to use both when the MacBook Air's lid was closed.

So while users gained the wider screen real estate of two external monitors, they lost the use of their MacBook Air internal display. Now the M4 MacBook Air supports two monitors of up to 6K resolution each, plus the built in 13.6-inch or 15.3-inch screen.

The Mac Studio was last updated in 2023 with an M2 chip upgrade, securing the desktop Mac's position as the one to get if you care about performance, but not enough to get a Mac Pro. A few years later, and Apple's finally refreshed it.

The 2025 Mac Studio is Apple's typical spec-bump update, with the changes largely being internal instead of externally-visible alterations. The design remains the same as the previous model, one that was good enough for the Mac mini to steal for itself.

Apple has long been on a drive to get its Apple TV+ seen by more viewers, whether they're on an aircraft, in France subscribing to Canal+, or even using Android. Now for the first time, a single show has been put up for sale and will be screened on another streamer.

According to UK trade magazine Broadcast, ITVX bought "Suspicion" from Apple TV+ via international sales distributor Fifth Season. If that is strictly accurate, that it came direct from Apple TV+, then it is the first such deal and suggests that Apple is now marketing its shows internationally.

We've tried our fair share of three-in-one chargers. While there are a lot of great ones, this model from Nimble adds additional functionality for users at a similar price point.

What we found especially impressive, is that it manages to have fast charging, premium materials — like a walnut wood frame, is very eco-friendly, and yet it isn't priced any higher than other comparable chargers.

MagSafe does connect to the iPhone 16e, but incredibly badly

Be clear about this from the start — it is a curiosity, it is not an actually useful magnetic connection for chargers. The iPhone 16e does lack MagSafe, and that is a problem, but MagSafe chargers will still connect magnetically to the metals inside it.

It was already known that the iPhone 16e would actually charge from MagSafe chargers, it just wouldn't stick to them magnetically. So the phone could never be used on a vertical or reclining MagSafe charger, and it won't ever be mountable in a car.

In one teardown a few days after release, the iPhone 16e is shown to have excellent repairability, compared to iPhones just a few years old, and commensurate with the rest of the iPhone 16 lineup.

The teardown by iFixit, published on Monday shows that techniques such as the electrically-released battery adhesive is being used in the new model. The system, which replaces the stretch-release adhesive technique, requires power to be applied to a screw post and a conductive tab, releasing the battery within seconds.

It is true that Apple has made things better, both by increasing the amount of RAM that base model gets, and also by making 256GB the smallest amount of storage you can buy.

Apple's introduction of the iPhone 16e did away with the iPhone SE line in favor of something closer to the main iPhone releases. It also made it tougher for those in the market for an iPhone to go for the cheapest option, as the pricing is now much closer between the variants.

Apple robots are coming - what the rumor mill thinks is coming, and when

Apple is widely believed to be working on two different robotics projects, both related to the Apple Home of the future. Here's what to expect from both projects.

Apple is said to be working on multiple robots, one of which resembles an iPad attached to a robotic arm.

A few months after the untimely demise of the Apple Car project, claims of a new robotics development within Apple appeared in April 2024. The iPhone maker had reportedly decided to shift focus, with increased efforts and research into products that would offer integration with smart home devices.

Part of that vision reportedly involves robots — a mobile humanoid unit, and a largely stationary anthropomorphic robot. The goal of these two apparent robotics projects is different.

Siri may only get minor Apple Intelligence improvements before iOS 19

A new report claims that certain Apple Intelligence improvements to Siri have been delayed to May 2025, and that may take until 2027 before there is a significant update.

Siri has gained a new animation around the edge of iPhone screens but real improvements are much delayed

Siri was supposed to adopt Apple Intelligence features from iOS 18.4, but following rumors of delays, the first developer beta of that shipped without any Siri changes. It's possible that the improvements will come in later rounds of the iOS 18.4 beta testing, but Bloomberg now says Apple is far behind on its AI plans.

The new claim is that Siri will now get the promised integration with Apple Intelligence in May 2025. This first round of improvements was seeming meant to be the one where, as in Apple's now months-old ads, a user could ask Siri the name of someone they met before and it would read their calendar for the answer.

New Ikea smart home device will work with any Thread hub

A new regulatory filing shows Ikea is planning a temperature and humidity sensor that will use Matter-over-Thread, meaning HomeKit users won't be required to also buy an Ikea hub.

Ikea's new sensor should work with any Matter-compatible hub, not just the company's own Dirigera device

After slow and delayed moves to support the Matter standard for smart homes, Ikea's as-yet unannounced temperature and humidity sensor called Timmerflotte, will support the Matter-over-Thread connectivity standard. Details of the device have been revealed in an FCC regulatory filing.

Up until now, the company's smart home products have largely relied on Wi-Fi or the Zigbee protocol to communicate with its own hubs, though it has released sensors that work with HomeKit since 2018. The new Timmerflotte sensor shouldn't require an Ikea hub, and is expected to work with any Matter-compatible smart home hubs.

While other device manufacturers have embraced the idea of foldable smartphones, such as Samsung's Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Flip ranges, Apple has steered clear of making its own version. All of its iPhones and iPads continue to be solid, flat devices with fixed screens that won't bend.

That's not to say that Apple hasn't been working on one in the background. Development of a foldable iPhone, often referred to as the iPhone Fold, has been speculated about for years, and leaks certainly put forward the idea that Apple's actually going through with it.

Microsoft blew $8.5 billion on Skype only to spend 14 years killing it

Skype will be closed down in May 2025, but it really died in 2011 when it was bought by Microsoft. It's just been a death by a thousand slow-motion cuts.

You didn't know Skype was still a thing, and in a few weeks' time, it won't be. Once a revolutionary app that brought free voice calls over the internet, it was important enough and valuable enough that in 2006, eBay bought it for $2.6 billion.

If it seems peculiar that eBay would be the one that bought it, give the auction site some credit — it flipped the service and sold Skype on in 2011 for a huge profit. Five years is a long time to have it on "Buy it Now," but Microsoft eventually snapped it up for $8.5 billion.

Bose Ultra Open wireless earbuds review: Great, but buy AirPods instead

For the last few months now I've been using Apple's (AirPods 4 (ANC), but alongside those, I've been testing another pair of wireless earbuds as well. The Bose Ultra Open earbuds are expensive and weird, and I kinda love them — but you probably shouldn't buy them.

Testing two pairs of earbuds simultaneously has the benefit of giving you an easy comparison at the end of it all. But for all their similarities — both are open, so you can hear the outside world — they're also very, very different.

SVG allows graphics to be smoothly scaled to any size.
Scalable Vector Graphics are now widely used on the web.

Modern web browsers and image apps have the ability to scale images using mathematical calculations, such as Bezier curves. This is as opposed to fixed bitmap graphics, which don't scale well and offer a blocky, pixelated appearance at times.

Scalable (or "vector") graphics use math-based descriptions of images. When an image is resized, it can be fully recalculated at the new size with no visible loss of quality.
