Bukayo Saka agrees new five-year Arsenal contract with big wage increase

  • Deal understood to lift pay to about £300,000 a week

  • Arsenal keen to reward Declan Rice with new deal

Bukayo Saka has agreed a new five-year contract at Arsenal that will make him one of the highest-paid players in the club’s history.

The England forward’s deal that he signed in May 2023 is thought to be worth about £200,000 a week and is due to expire in 2027. Saka said before the Champions League quarter-final victory against Real Madrid in April that he wanted to “win wearing this badge” but also said he was in “no rush” to sign a new contract.

Smart, independent and in demand … but would Glasner be a good fit for Manchester United?

The Austrian has thrived at teams who do not expect to have much of the ball but this style may not work at Old Trafford where possession is expected

Oliver Glasner has shown a penchant for one-liners, as well a 3-4-2-1 formation, since he took over at Crystal Palace almost two years ago. The Austrian declared he was “not David Copperfield” in his first press conference and usually has a saying for whatever situation Palace are in, such as declaring they must not be “one-hit wonders” after winning the FA Cup.

It was therefore no surprise to find Glasner had come prepared when he played a straight bat to questions about his future this week after Ruben Amorim’s sacking by Manchester United. “I’m not allowed to bet,” he said when asked to comment on the fact he is the bookmakers’ favourite to take over at Old Trafford in the summer.

Arsenal fail to take advantage of City slip as Liverpool hold leaders to draw

Point proven? Well, not exactly. Just when Arsenal looked ready to lay down a real marker for their title aspirations, a rejuvenated Liverpool side that has been through the wringer since they were crowned champions last season showed the Gunners remain fallible.

It could have been even worse for Mikel Arteta’s side if Liverpool had been awarded one of two potential penalties or if Conor Bradley’s brilliant chip had not struck the crossbar in the first half.

Oliver Glasner set to decide on Crystal Palace contract and hints at Guéhi sale

  • Resolution has been delayed by packed fixture schedule

  • Manager says defender may be sold for the right price

Oliver Glasner expects to decide in the coming weeks whether he will sign a new contract at Crystal Palace and has said Marc Guéhi could be sold this month if his “threshold” is met.

Glasner is the bookmakers’ early favourite to be the permanent replacement for Ruben Amorim at Manchester United. The Austrian’s contract expires this summer and the ambitious 51-year-old is understood to be open then to joining United or another big club.

Mikel Arteta lauds Arsenal’s ‘personality and presence’ in win at Bournemouth

  • Manager praises ‘remarkable’ Gabriel reaction after error

  • Rice makes impact after disappointment of missing Villa

Mikel Arteta paid tribute to Arsenal’s newfound “personality and presence” after they came back from a goal down to defeat Bournemouth and move six points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Gabriel Magalhães made up for his error in gifting Evanilson the opening goal by lashing in the equaliser at the other end minutes later before Declan Rice scored twice after returning from a knee injury. Eli Junior Kroupi pulled one back late on but Arsenal were able to comfortably hang on as they began the new year with a fifth straight league win.

Declan Rice leads Arsenal to thrilling comeback win at Bournemouth

Arsenal’s revenge mission this week has been a dish best served cold. After Unai Emery’s Aston Villa felt the force of the Premier League leaders in a 4-1 thrashing, this time it was Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth who were vanquished despite being gifted the opening goal by Gabriel Magalhães.

The Brazilian promptly equalised before Declan Rice capped his return from injury with two goals as Arsenal moved six points clear at the top, even if they had to survive a nervous last 16 minutes after the substitute Eli Junior Kroupi pulled one back.
