Trump steps up Canada trade war after Carney’s Palestine pledge – US politics live

President says Canada’s move to recognise a Palestine state ‘will make it very hard for us’ to conclude a trade deal

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday the US will charge a 15% tariff on imports from South Korea, down from a threatened 25%, as part of a deal that eases tensions with a top-10 trading partner and key Asian ally.

South Korea also agreed to invest $350 billion in the United States in projects selected by Trump and to purchase energy products worth $100 billion, Reuters reported.

Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh’ Canada!!!

Trump has said the US will charge a 15% tariff on imports from South Korea as part of an agreement with the key Asian trading partner and ally that avoids even higher levies. In contrast on Wednesday, Trump placed 25% tariffs on imports from India and 50% on those from Brazil.

Brown University has reached an agreement with the Trump administration that will reinstate nearly $50m in research funding by agreeing a commitment to nondiscrimination in both admissions and campus programs, and will grant federal officials access to its admissions data. Meanwhile $108m in federal research funding to Duke University has been frozen.

The US Federal Reserve left its benchmark interest rate unchanged on Wednesday, even amid intense pressure from Trump to lower rates. Earlier in the day, figures showed US gross domestic product (GDP) grew at a better-than-expected annual rate of 3% in the second quarter of 2025.

Kamala Harris announced on Wednesday that she will not run for governor of California – a highly anticipated decision that leaves the contest to lead the country’s largest blue state wide open.

Europe live: Zelenskyy suggests need to ‘change regime’ in Russia as death toll rises from overnight attacks

Eight die in strikes on Ukraine as Russia shrugs off threat of sanctions and secondary tariffs with reduced US ceasefire deadline

Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Svyrydenko just posted an update after overnight attacks on Kyiv, saying that the death toll from the strikes rose to eight as rescue efforts “continue across several districts” of the capital.

More than eighty people were injured, she added.

This is how the Kremlin responds to calls for peace: with deliberate terror and the systematic targeting of Ukraine’s civilian population.

Putin is not seeking a solution. He is testing the world’s resolve, continuing to receive confirmation that mass murder has no real consequences.”

IDF gunfire kills 30 Palestinians waiting for aid, Gaza defence ministry says, as US special envoy due to visit Israel – Israel-Gaza war live

Up to 300 people reported as wounded in incident north of Gaza City as Steve Witkoff set to visit Israel

Syrian foreign minister Asaad al-Shaibani said his country wants Russia “by our side” and called for “mutual respect” between the two nations following the overthrow of Syria’s previous Moscow-backed government last year, AFP reports.

“The current period is full of various challenges and threats, but it is also an opportunity to build a united and strong Syria. And, of course, we are interested in having Russia by our side on this path,” he told his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov during a visit to Moscow, according to a Russian translation of his comments.

The situation in Gaza is utterly deplorable, and Israel is not fulfilling its most basic obligations and agreed-upon commitments regarding humanitarian aid.

Sweden therefore demands that the EU, as soon as possible, freezes the trade component of the association agreement. Economic pressure on Israel must increase. The Israeli government must allow unrestricted humanitarian aid in Gaza.

England v India: fifth men’s cricket Test, day one – live

  • Updates from the 11am BST start at the Oval

  • Get in touch! Share your thoughts with Taha

Ollie Pope wins it and England will bowl first. It’s green, it’s overcast, it’s pretty much a no-brainer.

Matt Dony writes in:

Your preamble makes it sound a bit like Stokes has been replaced by 3 players. Which makes complete sense, as it often feels like he’s worth at least three ‘normal’ cricketers. Ben Stokes the inspirational captain, Ben Stokes the outrageously gifted cricketer, Ben Stokes the maelstrom of personality and will-to-win. I don’t think I’ve ever seen another sportsperson who just makes things happen around him like Stokes does. He’s astonishing.

'Killed for what, religion?': inside the horror of southern Syria's sectarian violence – video

Last month, sectarian violence involving opposing fighters from the Druze minority faith and Bedouin tribes engulfed southern Syria again, forcing the government to send troops in an attempt to quell the violence. Amid the fighting, examples of humiliation and summary executions were documented on social media. Three Druze men from the same Arnous family: Osama, 26, Mouath, 24, and Baraa, 20, were among those killed as they took shelter from the violence. Guardian journalist William Christou talked to Osama's brother-in-law Hadi Neman who recounted their last moments
