spirit 16.1

spirit OS is a lightweight remaster of Tiny Core Linux, designed for very old 32-bit computers without UEFI. It includes the IceWM window manager, full multimedia support (video and music with codecs), WiFi tools and the Dillo web browser. It is powered by glibc and a recent Linux kernel. The ISO image weighs less than 400 MB and includes fewer than 300 packages, including GPicView (a fast and simple image viewer), ROX-Filer (a minimal and responsive file manager), VLC (a media player), XMMS (a retro-style music player), and compression tools for handling various archive formats. Extra software can be installed using xpkg.

Xtraceroute Ported To GTK4 + Vulkan For Demonstrating The Open-Source Potential For AI

Christian Schaller, a Fedora developer and Director of Software Engineering at Red Hat, recently began exploring the potential of AI usage more from the open-source/Linux perspective. He was left impressed from his ability to easily generate a Python application for internal Red Hat use to porting the venerable Xtraceroute program to GTK4 and Vulkan...

Farewell Benchmarks Of Intel's Clear Linux On AMD EPYC Shows More Performance Left To Tap

Last week I ran the last planned benchmarks of Intel CPU performance on Clear Linux vs. Ubuntu with Intel having ceased development of Clear Linux following the restructuring at the company. In today's article is a final look at how the AMD EPYC performance compares on Clear Linux relative to Ubuntu Linux and AlmaLinux. An AMD EPYC 9965 "Turin" dual socket server was used for showing the strong out-of-the-box performance on Intel's Clear Linux even for this competing server processor.

Volumio 3.832

Volumio (formerly RaspyFi) is a Debian-based distribution originally made for the Raspberry Pi single-board computer, but later expanded to other embedded devices, including CuBox, BeagleBone Black and UDOO. It aims to fully integrate Music Player Daemon, an open-source music player server, into the current Debian releases and to optimise it for Audiophile-quality music playback. Volumio also makes it simple to play music library directly from a USB storage device or from any network-attached storage and it also enables users to listen to web-based radio stations from Spotify, Last.fm and SoundCloud. Starting in October 2014 the project no longer provided a complete Linux distribution; instead it develops Volumio as a music player application only which it makes available for various platforms. The Volumio distribution resumed development in 2016 and is available for x86 computers as well as several ARM devices.
