While Apple may still be on the road to augmented reality glasses, a detour it is taking along the way is a future Apple Vision Pro that goes far beyond just mirroring a Mac's display.

Apple isn't abandoning the Apple Vision Pro concept, despite the repeated calls from naysayers to do so. In the lates Power On newsletter, author Mark Gurman details what he's been told Apple is working on, for one of Apple's follow-on units.

The report spits a very fine hair for what's going on with one of the units. A previous report said that Apple had stopped work on glasses that tethered to a Mac. Instead, it is working on a headset that directly connects to a Mac.

In a surprise announcement extremely late on Friday night, President Trump has exempted smart phones, computers, and chips from the so-called reciprocal tariffs, sparing Apple and others billions in import fees.

The exclusions published near midnight eastern time grant exemptions to products that would take years to develop in the US. Apple is greatly helped by the exemptions, with much of Apple's product line now exempt from the 145% tariff applied.

Almost the entirety of Apple's product line is now exempt from the enhanced tariffs. Computers, smartphones, monitors, flash memory, DRAM, and other storage like hard drives are exempt for the time being.

Twopan Portable SSD review: Compact but expensive iPhone storage

The Twopan Portable SSD 2TB is a good external storage option intended for your iPhone and iPad, but its retail cost is prohibitive, so wait for a good sale.

Beating the storage limits of an iPhone or iPad can be done in two ways. You can use cloud storage, or your can attach an external storage device.

All the second option requires is an external drive with a USB-C connection that can plug into an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. However, typical external drives take up space, and aren't great for carrying around.

UK iCloud backdoor mandate hearing must be made public -- eventually

After a legal challenge by Apple, the hearing about blowing open Apple's iCloud encryption in the UK for the sake of national security won't be kept secret, but it's not clear when the details will be made public.

iCloud security is on the line
iCloud security is on the line

After the hearing about a mandated back door happened behind closed doors, Apple very nearly immediately filed an appeal, with the backing of most of the world's governments, privacy advocates, and journalism organizations. That appeal has been heard, and at some point, the results of the hearing will be made clear.

The Investigatory Powers Tribunal rejected claims from the UK government that national security would be hurt by revealing the results of the hearing, or exposing who attended the hearing.

Apple and iPad birthdays, iOS 18.4, and AI health on the AppleInsider Podcast

Now that iOS 18.4 is out, we're looking to the future with iOS 18.5, a rumored AI update to Apple Health, and the first rumors about the M6 processor, all on the AppleInsider Podcast.

The iPad is now 15 years old — and Apple is 49. It's hard to say which seems more unbelievable, but what's much easier to say is that today's iPad and today's Apple may be very different from their origins, yet they are still so clearly the same product from the same company.

But if we must stop to acknowledge these anniversaries, and also acknowledge just how important the iPad and Apple itself have become to us all, there is still much more to come. We've just had the public release of iOS 18.4, but already the beta test versions of iOS 18.5 are out, and of course we are mere moments away from WWDC and the announcement of iOS 19.

2025 Mac Studio review: One clear purchase choice for most buyers

Apple's 2025 Mac Studio brings with it the latest Apple Silicon chips and a few more changes that power users will love. One model is a must-buy, and the other is still excellent — but very clearly not for everybody.

The Mac Studio takes its usual external appearance once again

The Mac Studio isn't called the Mac Pro, but it might as well be. Like the Mac Pro, the Mac Studio is as much computing power as Apple can bring to bear, in a compact metal box.

In 2025, that legacy of power remains intact. For now, it's faster than the fastest Mac Pro, albeit minus PCI-E slots.

Apple has released the second release candidate beta of iOS 18.4.

Apple initially introduced the first round of release candidates for macOS 15.4, iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, tvOS 18.4, watchOS 11.4, and visionOS 2.4 on March 24. Four days later, it has introduced a second RC build of iOS and iPadOS for testing.

It's not uncommon for there to be multiple release candidate builds of software before it is released to the public. While a release candidate is supposed to have the same content as the final release, sometimes there is a missing or incorrect element that needs addressing urgently.
