The Sinking City Remastered officially announced

2 avril 2025 à 13:00

Known for their work on the somewhat charming Sherlock Holmes series of games, Frogwares’ single most high-profile title is likely The Sinking City. Released back in 2019, this H. P. Lovecraft inspired 3rd person action-adventure game is perhaps known best for its messy distribution – with the devs eventually obtaining full rights to the IP. Now, in anticipation of its sequel, The Sinking City is getting a free remastered upgrade.

Making the announcement on Steam, the team at Frogwares officially unveiled The Sinking City: Remastered, writing: “Charles Reed returns to Oakmont, a city drowning in supernatural mystery and eldritch terror – now fully remastered with Unreal Engine 5! Coming soon to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series, including a free upgrade for existing owners.”

Though we have not gotten a full breakdown of all the changes / improvements coming with this remaster, the team have promised lighting enhancements thanks to Unreal Engine 5. Whether this means ray-tracing is involved however is still unknown.

The Sinking City Frogwares

Beyond this, The Sinking City: Remastered will also benefit from:

  • Enhanced locations with additional levels of detail and objects
  • 4K textures and improved reflections
  • Addition of a Photo Mode
  • Support for DLSS, FSR and TSR upscaling

No price nor release date has been given for this remaster, however, as mentioned above, those who already own the game will be entitled to a free upgrade – which is always welcome to see.

In case you missed it, Frogwares is currently running a Kickstarter campaign for The Sinking City 2 with just a few days left to go. The full details can be found HERE.

KitGuru says: What did you think of The Sinking City? Will this remaster suffer from common UE5 issues? How much do you think the game will cost if you don’t already own it? Let us know down below.

Nightdive Studios gears up to remaster PS3 / Xbox 360 exclusives

2 avril 2025 à 12:00

Nightdive Studios has amassed a solid reputation for their work on remastering many classic titles from history across PC and old-gen consoles. Following the likes of System Shock; DOOM; Quake; Turok and much more, Nightdive looks set to tackle the 7th generation next with PS3 and Xbox 360 remasters.

In an interview conducted by VGC, Nightdive Studios founder and CEO Stephen Kick (alongside director of business development Larry Kuperman) spoke on their future plans for the team. According to the two, Nightdive is gearing up to remaster games from the 7th generation of consoles – meaning PS3 and Xbox 360.

In discussing their approach, Kuperman said “I would begin asking a couple of questions. Was it Xbox 360 exclusive, or was there a PC version out too? Because that also changes things, the little preservation that’s available. Do we have source code? If so, what’s the quality of the source code? How about the assets? Those are the kinds of considerations that we have there. That being said, there were some really good games that came out in that era that shouldn’t be lost.”

Nightdive PS3

In talking about the PlayStation 3 specifically and its unique CELL architecture (which is the reason why there is no backwards compatibility on PS4/5 with PS3), Kick stated:

“If we get to that – or I should say when – we get to the PS3 era games, it will be a challenge that we have to face. But I think that we’ve had enough experience to where we can do a serviceable job on a PS3 remaster”. The full interview can be found HERE.

All in all, there still remains plenty of 7th-gen titles trapped on these older systems – especially on the PS3 front. With Sony recently working more and more alongside 3rd-party developers to remaster their old games, hopefully Nightdive could be tasked with bringing the classic inFAMOUS duology, Killzone or even Resistance back.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Nightdive’s work? What PS3-era games would you like to see remastered? What one game would you want to be their top priority? Let us know down below.

Black Ops 6 Season 3 introduces console-only crossplay toggle

2 avril 2025 à 11:00

Over the course of this generation, we’ve seen an increasing number of titles offer crossplay between all consoles and PC, opening up the potential pool of players greatly. Interestingly, we’ve now started to see a bit of back-sliding in this regard. As part of Season 3 for Call of Duty Black Ops 6, console players will now be able to opt out of crossplay with PC entirely.

Alongside the launch of Black Ops 6 Season 3 today, console players across both Xbox and PlayStation will now be able to toggle a new option in the settings. Previously, players could enable or disable crossplay, however there was no in-between.

Starting with Season 3, those on console across both regular multiplayer and ranked mode will be able to toggle between full crossplay, console-only crossplay or of course no crossplay – meaning you’ll only match with others on the same platform.

Black Ops Crossplay

While this new toggle could cause potential matchmaking issues in the future, the move has been met with support from fans, owing to a cheating issue experienced by some console players when engaging with PC folk online.

Though a more permanent solution to the cheating would be preferable, this serves at least as somewhat of a solid plaster on the issue for now.

KitGuru says: Are you excited for Season 3? What do you think of this change? Have you encountered many cheaters when playing Black Ops 6? Let us know down below.

Prince of Persia The Lost Crown is coming to iOS and Android next month

31 mars 2025 à 14:30

Prince of Persia The Lost Crown was an unfortunately underrated recent release from Ubisoft, with the side-scrolling metroidvania seeing a ton of praise from critics and fans alike following its release last year. Though the game failed to meet Ubisoft’s expectations, it seems to be getting a second chance at life with The Lost Crown announced to be coming to both iOS and Android soon.

Making the surprise announcement, Ubisoft officially revealed that Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is set to come to smartphones on the 14th of April, writing:
“Adapted to mobile by Ubisoft Da Nang, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown will run at 60 FPS on recent generations of mobile devices. The game can be played either with an external controller or touch screen controls, with the ability to fully remap controls available for both options.”

The port brings with it some additional quality-of-life improvements to help with controls, including “auto-potion, auto-parry, and slow time options, as well as a host of other quality-of-life features.”

In the past few years we have seen an influx of console games brought over to mobile. From the likes of Stardew Valley; to Dredge; Death Stranding; Resident Evil; Slay the Spire; Balatro; Little Nightmares; Wreckfest and so much more, it seems like developers/publishers are finally acknowledging the potential of current-day smartphones and their power.

Hopefully Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown proves to be a success on mobile. No price has been provided, but the game will be free-to-start with an additional fee to unlock the full game.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this announcement? Are you surprised? Will The Lost Crown do better on mobile than consoles/PC? Let us know your thoughts down below.

Satisfactory is finally getting controller support and much more in next update

31 mars 2025 à 13:45

Following years spent in Early Access, the management/construction/automation game Satisfactory finally saw its 1.0 launch last year. Already a solid release with a ton of additions, the game’s upcoming 1.1 update is set to introduce a bunch of new and welcome features – including the long-awaited controller support.

Releasing a video to YouTube, the team at Coffee Stain Studios officially announced and detailed update 1.1 for Satisfactory.

Said to be coming to the game’s experimental branch tomorrow on the 1st of April, the update brings with it a ton of improvements, additions and new features. The full video can be found HERE, but some of the most notable updates include:

  • Added Photo mode
  • Personnel Elevators
  • Curved Conveyor Belts
  • Splitters/mergers now work on vertical conveyor belts
  • Straight + Curved Pipes
  • Curved rails
  • Left handed rail signals
  • Coffee machine
  • Drone pathing
  • Dismantling/destroying more world objects
  • Controller Support

As always, the full list of changes and additions can be found HERE.

While a meaty update, one of the most interesting additions is the support for controllers. Teased back with the launch of 1.0, support for such peripherals were developed in part due to the planned console release.

Though this has yet to materialise, the implementation of controller support seems to suggest that the console release could be making great progress. Here’s to hoping.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the update? Which addition are you most looking forward to? When do you think the console versions will release? Let us know down below.

Sony shares new details on Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Yotei

31 mars 2025 à 13:00

Ghost of Yotei is one of PlayStation big first-party titles planned to release in 2025. Though we have yet to get anything more than the initial teaser trailer, an update to its PlayStation Store listing has now offered a couple of new and interesting details on Sucker Punch Productions' upcoming sequel.

As discovered by ResetEra user ‘nolifebr’ Sony recently updated their PlayStation Store with a listing for Sucker Punch Productions’ upcoming Ghost of Tsushima sequel Ghost of Yotei.

Though light on specifics, the team did offer some new details on the world of Yotei and their approach to developing this game, writing:

“Featuring massive sightlines that let you look far across the environment, skies of twinkling stars and auroras, and vegetation that sways believably in the wind, Ghost of Yōtei has been built from the ground up for PlayStation 5 consoles, with enhanced performance and visuals on PlayStation 5 Pro.”

It continues, “Alongside its stunning new setting, Ghost of Yōtei also features new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons for Atsu to master, including ōdachi, kusarigama, and dual katanas.”

Sucker Punch Ghost of Yotei

Though a number of these details could be inferred from the initial teaser trailer, it is welcome to have such inferences confirmed straight from the horse’s mouth.

The plot synopsis reads as follows: “300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, a new warrior – Atsu – rises from the ashes of her homestead. Filled with fury and determination, Atsu will hunt down those responsible for the death of her family and exact her revenge. Every odd job and bounty will provide the coin she needs for her journey. But how she fights, survives, and evolves the legend of the Ghost, will be up to you.”

Given how the game is still planned to launch in 2025, we will likely begin to hear an increasing number of details regarding Ghost of Yotei over the coming months. Perhaps during the next State of Play? We will have to wait and see.

KitGuru says: What do you think of these new details? How hyped are you for Ghost of Yotei? What month do you think it’ll arrive in? Let us know down below.

The Legend of Zelda film will in fact be an entire trilogy, claims insider

31 mars 2025 à 12:15

Following an official announcement quite a while ago, Nintendo finally offered fans their first details on the currently-in-development Legend of Zelda film. Said to be coming in 2027, new reports have claimed that the company’s ambitions are much larger than expected – with an entire Zelda trilogy reportedly in the works.

As reported by known film industry insider DanielRPK (paywalled) and collated by VGC, the upcoming Legend of Zelda film is said to be just the first part of a planned trilogy, with the films seemingly set to all release within 6 years.

If true, this could mean that Nintendo’s plans for the Zelda film are far more expansive than initially thought.

Zelda Trilogy

Though this is mere conjecture, having a trilogy to work around means that the narrative, pacing and more could all be especially created to work over the span of multiple films – making for a much more epic feeling overall (not too dissimilar to The Lord of The Rings Trilogy).

Nintendo has so far found great success with their film adaptations, with both Detective Pikachu but especially The Super Mario Bros film becoming smashing box office hits.

Giving a Zelda project 3 entire films to work with could lead to a highly rated and lucrative final product. Hopefully the adaptation is treated with as much care as the franchise it’s based off of.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this rumour? How would you want a Zelda trilogy to be formatted? What pitfalls do the team need to try and avoid? Let us know down below.

Leakers offer a ton of updates on Xbox games coming to PS5

31 mars 2025 à 11:37

For a little over a year now, Xbox has been bringing an increasing number of its previously-exclusive titles to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation. With even more titles said to be on the way, notable leakers have now offered updates on the likes of Starfield, Halo and more coming to PS5.

As part of the Xbox Two podcast, known industry insiders RandAlThor and Tom Warren spoke on a number of upcoming Xbox games set to come to PS5.

Of course, Microsoft themselves have confirmed that Forza Horizon 5 and Indiana Jones and The Great Circle are coming to PlayStation soon. According to Rand however, Forza was originally planned to release last year, with the insider claiming: “the Forza Horizon 5 thing was supposed to happen last year too but it didn't.”

This makes some degree of sense as its PS5 release being so close to both Indiana Jones and DOOM The Dark Ages did seem somewhat odd.

Xbox PS5

Perhaps more interestingly, Starfield – which has been rumoured to be coming to PS5 – was supposedly planned to launch on Sony’s console last year, with Tom Warren stating “they were originally going to do it [the port] with that expansion [Shattered Space] and then I don't know what happened there”. According to Warren however, “they have been working on it for a while so it should be ready (for later this year when the next expansion drops), ‘should be’ being the key word.”

Finally, according to the duo, the long-rumoured addition of Halo to PlayStation still seems to be going ahead, but perhaps not in the way fans expected, stating: “I don't know if it's, going to be a collection in the sense of you know, not like [the Master Chief Collection] as it exists right now yeah. I wouldn't think of it (sic) of every game, probably the most uh the most I can say right now.”

While relatively vague, it seems as though Microsoft might be bringing Halo to PlayStation one game at a time. Though this may disappoint some, The Master Chief Collection took years upon years to become a fun and stable port/remaster and so perhaps Microsoft simply wants to avoid any similar issues. We will have to wait and see.

KitGuru says: What do you think of these rumours? What unannounced Xbox game would you want to see come to PlayStation next? Let us know down below.

Naughty Dog has a second mystery game in development right now

31 mars 2025 à 11:30

Since the release of The Last of Us Part II in 2020, Naughty Dog have remained relatively quiet release-wise. While we of course have gotten the likes of TLOU Part I and a remaster for Part II, the cancellation of the studio’s live-service title seemed to push progress back by a bit. In a welcome surprise, it appears as though Naughty Dog are currently not only working on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet but also a second secret project.

As reported by known film industry insider DanielRPK (paywalled) and detailed by TheGamePost, Naughty Dog are said to be working on more than just the previously-announced new IP Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

According to the leaker, beyond Neil Druckmann’s project, a second game is also in the works. Said to not be another entry for The Last of Us, this mysterious project is reportedly being headed by Shaun Escayg – known best for directing the highly-underrated Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

Naughty Dog Second

Little else was shared at the time, however, according to DanielRPK, this project has “been in development for three years now.”

If true, Naughty Dog could be gearing up for a massive set of successive releases; similar to what we saw with Uncharted 3 and The Last of Us – or even Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy.

That said, in today’s day and age, video games can easily take up to 5 years or more to develop, and so perhaps this mysterious title is still a bit further away just it seems. We will have to wait and see.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this mysterious project? Could it be a new Uncharted? If not, what else could it be? Let us know your thoughts down below.

KitGuru Games: The Genius Casting of Kaitlyn Dever in HBO’s The Last of Us

30 mars 2025 à 15:00

Following an explosive and highly popular first series, HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 is almost upon us. Set to premiere on the 13th of April, the sequel season based on Naughty Dog’s controversial Part II is likely to spark up even more discourse than the first. Unlike 2020’s masterpiece however, HBO’s adaptation has made one key decision which – if handled well – could not only serve to build upon the theming of the game itself, but also function as a different way to tell the same message. That being the casting of Kaitlyn Dever as Abby.

The Last of Us Casting

To explain why such a casting choice is so impactful, we have to go back…way back. Prior to the release of Season 1 in 2022 or Part II in 2020 – or even before the ‘next-gen’ version of The Last of Us Remastered in 2014 – Sony announced that they were officially working on a film adaptation based on Naughty Dog’s latest and highly successful new IP.

Little else was known at the time, with one of the few details shared being that it would directly involve Naughty Dog as producers alongside famed director Sam Raimi (who of course worked on Sony’s Spider-Man Trilogy). With not much else to go off, fans of the game started to do what fans do: casting for the film.

At the time, there were three leading selections respectively which rose above the rest when it came to who fans were hoping to see play the iconic roles of Joel and Ellie.

For Joel, there was Wolverine’s own Hugh Jackman; Nikolaj Coster-Waldau of Game of Thrones fame and last but not least King Leonidas himself, Gerard Butler.

When it came to fan-casting Ellie, there was the obvious choice at the time, that being Elliot Page – whose likeness to Ellie upon the initial reveal of TLOU sparked a legal response from Page. While the final design for Ellie was tweaked ahead of launch, Page still resembled the character quite a bit, and thanks to a number of film roles where he’s played the spunky sidekick, the selection was understandable.

The second actor fans had been hopeful for was Maisie Williams. While she didn’t necessarily look like Ellie, aesthetics are but one small part of an actor’s hiring. Couple this up with Williams’ popularity at the time, the connection to Game of Thrones and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as well as the fact that she shares the same last name as Ellie and there were plenty of reasons as to why Maisie Williams could’ve worked.

Raimi and co. seemed to think so as she was said to have been in talks with Sony at the time for the role, though of course the film adaptation never came to be – but I’m getting ahead of myself a bit here.

The final notable fan-casting was for Kaitlyn Dever. While a relatively small name in the industry at the time, she had proven herself capable and as such had started to land on an increasing number of fans’ radars.

More so than anything however, Kaitlyn Dever’s name came up time and time again due to her in many ways resembling Ellie’s final design more accurately than even Elliot Page.

Again, how an actor looks is just a tiny factor in actually casting someone for a role. That being said, when it comes to fan casts however, aesthetics tend to rise to the top of people’s priorities.

And so, with the original film adaptation of The Last of Us, it was clear that the two top choices in the eyes of fans were Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Joel and Kaitlyn Dever as Ellie. Unfortunately,  following years of little to no news, Sony officially canned their film plans for The Last of Us making all of this a moot point – or is it? You see, this is where things get interesting.

Before going ahead, I just want to state that I will try to refrain from any spoilers for TLOU Part II, aside from the acknowledgement that Abby is the game’s antagonist and Ellie the protagonist (a fact which has been illustrated in many trailers for both Part II and Season 2).

With that being said, over a decade on from the original fan-castings and with the hotly-anticipated Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us mere weeks away, fans’ hopes and dreams for Kaitlyn to be cast in the live-action adaptation is coming to fruition – except instead of Ellie, Dever is taking the role of Abby.

Obviously Dever wasn’t going to take over from Bella Ramsey’s excellent portrayal in the first Season, but to cast her as Abby in particular sends an interesting message.

We all know that Druckmann and co. have a heavy hand in the development of the show, with many small but notable changes being made from the source material in order to fit the medium. The same applies to Season 2 – perhaps even more so thanks to the success of the first series – and so it’s safe to conclude that the casting of Kaitlyn Dever was no mere coincidence. Why does this matter? Well, let’s get into it.

Whether it be due to legitimate or illegitimate reasons, reactions towards Abby both prior to and following the release of TLOU Part II were visceral, with some ‘fans’ even going so far as to send death threats and more to the character’s voice actor.

Such actions are in no way condonable regardless of how much you despise a fictional character; and while violence is an easy and cheap method to express your feelings, it does unfortunately serve as a strong way for people to voice their opinions – and people had OPINIONS.

While I personally love The Last of Us Part II and the narrative that it tells, I acknowledge that some players ultimately walked away from the experience with a different opinion on the events that unfurled. That’s perfectly fine, as long as these opinions come from a place of good faith.

All this is to say that Abby is not only a polarising character, but perhaps one of the most polarising in video game history.

With all that context in mind, why would anyone want to play one of the most hated video game characters of all time? Well, aside from being a major part of one of the biggest and most celebrated shows in recent memory, it appears as though Druckmann, Mazin and co. have a grand plan on how to handle the highly controversial Abby; neither in a better nor worse way – but in a different way.

When you play a game, quite often you will inherit the mind of the character which you are playing, be it due to the time you’ve spent as them, the inherent connection through direct interactivity or just some damn good writing. Through a combination of these and more, many players wound up holding Ellie and Joel close to their hearts, and so naturally anyone who opposes them would be viewed negatively as a result.

This is what came to be with the introduction of Abby in Part II. A direct contrast to Ellie in many ways – but especially aesthetically – fans found it easy to hate a character who looks so drastically different to the protagonist which they’ve come to know and love.

Tackling this challenge was one of Naughty Dog’s greatest tasks for TLOU Part II, and in my eyes, it worked perfectly. My own analysis and interpretation of each scene matched the intentions of the creators, and so their messaging was made clear to me.

Unfortunately, not everyone was swayed by what Naughty Dog were trying to say. And so what do you do when a piece of media has been co-opted by a group who do not understand the message that was being told? Well you do a Joker 2: Folie Deux of course, but the correct way. Not really, but also yes.

While the showrunners have already explained why Dever isn't bulking up for the role of Abby, there’s no denying that the character’s stature and musculature played a major role in both the narrative and gameplay of Part II.

Yes, the show’s second Season won’t be as action-heavy as the game it’s based on due to wanting to focus more on the narrative and characters, as TV shows are not an interactive medium. This makes sense and on its own could be enough of a reason for Druckmann to justify this creative change, however, I believe there is much more going on.

So, what do I think Druckmann’s grand plan is? Well, given how split players were on Abby in The Last of Us Part II (due to story reasons, gameplay implications and even just the fact that she is a very buff woman), I feel as though Season 2 will instead represent a telling of the story’s themes using a different tactic.

I’m sure that regardless of how Abby looked, Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us would have undoubtedly faced less backlash from viewers. This is because ‘Gamers’ are a fickle bunch and can get caught on particular details irrespective of context – leading to the aforementioned anger/vitriol referenced above.

For those who did not understand (or chose not to) the thematic relationship between Ellie and Abby, Druckmann seems intent on making sure that the message goes through this time.

Not only are fans of The Last of Us going to see an Ellie who looks nothing like her game version go up against Abby in HBO’s upcoming season, but will be doing so against an actor who looks more like Ellie than Ellie herself.

In making this choice, Druckmann is forcing ‘fans’ of the game to reflect on their first interpretation of Part II’s lessons through subtle yet (literally) in-your-face tactics.

Those who already enjoyed the game were going to like Season 2 regardless, and those who have not played the series will be none-the-wiser when it comes to the subconscious inception which Druckmann, Mazin and the rest have cooked up for the rest. Will it work out? We’ll have to wait and see. I’ll be crying my eyes out regardless when…[REDACTED].

Simplified Chinese becomes the most-used language on Steam

28 mars 2025 à 13:30

Black Myth Wukong launched last year to a huge influx of players, with the action-adventure title selling over 25 million copies in just 6 months. While a surprise to some, the Chinese-developed title received a ton of support from players in the region – with China now representing the greatest number of accounts on Steam.

As part of Valve’s recent Game Developers Conference talk (reported by GameDiscover), the company offered a new breakdown of Steam’s user stats. According to the platform holder, Simplified Chinese is now the most-used language on Steam, taking up 33.7% of all active accounts (with English landing at second place with 33.5%).

Chinese Steam

It’s worth noting that these figures come from Steam’s own internal reports as opposed to the semi-regular Steam hardware survey, meaning that this breakdown is likely to be much more representative of the current state of the platform.

Of course, home consoles are quite heavily controlled by the government in China, leaving PC as easily the most accessible gaming console (aside from phones).

With even more major Chinese-developed titles set to launch over the coming months and years, it will be interesting to see how this breakdown continues to evolve with time.

inZOI has removed Denuvo DRM ahead of launch

28 mars 2025 à 12:45

Denuvo is universally disliked by pretty much everyone, with the PC-focused anti-tamper DRM not only causing unforeseen issues, but can also impact a game’s stability and performance. Fortunately, an increasing number of developers seem to be moving away from the DRM, with the upcoming life-sim inZOI getting rid of Denuvo before the game’s even launched.

Making a post on their Steam page, the team behind inZOI addressed the inclusion of Denuvo ahead of its official Early Access launch on the 28th of March, writing:

“Recently, we’ve seen growing concern around the implementation of the Denuvo anti-tamper solution in inZOI. While we wanted to respond as quickly as possible, we also felt it was important to approach the issue with care—consulting with teams from around the world to make a thoughtful and informed decision. We sincerely apologize for the delay in providing this official response. To address the most important point: we have decided to remove Denuvo from the Early Access build of inZOI.”

inZOI DRM

The full post is rather lengthy and goes into much greater depth on why Denuvo was initially added – and why it’s now been removed. According to the team:

“Our initial application of Denuvo on our main development build made it so that the inZOI: Creative Studio demo build, a branch from the main build, was also applied with the same anti-tamper. Unfortunately, we failed to properly inform our players of this application during the demo period, and we sincerely apologize for that oversight.”

In essence, it seems as though Denuvo was primarily added ahead of launch due to the ongoing pre-EA period which saw a small select number of players gain access to the title.

In instances such as this, having DRM could make sense. Even so, it is highly welcome to see the team at inZOI Studio being so transparent and responsive.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows surpasses 3 million players in under a week

28 mars 2025 à 10:00

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a massively important game for Ubisoft, with the publisher suffering from a long string of commercial disappointments and the fear of being absorbed into competing companies. Fortunately, for now Shadows seems to be doing what was needed – with the game having already surpassed 3 million players.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Assassin’s Creed page shared some updated player numbers, writing:

“OVER 3 MILLION PLAYERS FOR AC SHADOWS!

  • 2nd highest Day 1 sales revenue in Assassin's Creed franchise history
  • Biggest Ubisoft Day 1 ever on PlayStation Digital Store
  • Best community ever, with over 40 Million hours already played

Justice is forged in the Shadows.”

Creed 3 million

For context, AC: Shadows reached 1 million total players within hours of the game’s launch. Following this, the title saw a further million players join over the next couple days. Now, within less than a week from launch, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has reached yet another major milestone.

That said, it is worth noting that 3 million players does not equate to 3 million copies sold, with Shadows being available day-one on Ubisoft’s subscription service.

Still, it is encouraging to see Assassin’s Creed Shadows continue to maintain its momentum. Hopefully its success encourages Ubisoft to put more time and care into their games.

Microsoft brings new ‘benefits’ to Game Pass subscribers

27 mars 2025 à 13:00

Game Pass is the big unique selling point for Xbox, with the service offering a boatload of both first and 3rd party titles for a relatively cheap (though increasingly less so) monthly price. In an effort to add “even more value” Game Pass is set to get new in-game benefits for select free-to-play games.

Making the announcement on the Xbox Wire Blog, Xbox’s Product Marketing Manager – Steve Masline – wrote: “Starting this week, we’re rolling out even more value to Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members with in-game benefits for free-to-play games. Members will get items like cosmetics, characters, in-game currency, and more for additional games.”

Between now and April, a decent selection of titles will be supported, with even more said to be added over time. So far, the list is as follows:

  • Heroes of the Storm – unlock 30 heroes
  • Naraka: Bladepoint – unlock all heroes and a couple cosmetics
  • Smite 2 – unlock 5 gods and a could cosmetics
  • The Finals – Stryker Grid Set, match XP boost and in-game currency
  • Asphalt Legends Unite
  • Call of Duty: Warzone
  • Enlisted
  • War Thunder

Other contemporary services such as PlayStation Plus offer similar benefits and so it’s nothing necessarily new. Still, it is nice to see more ‘value’ being given to Game Pass subscribers.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Call of Duty benefits wind up being – given that Activision is owned by Microsoft. We’ll have to wait and see.

Gran Turismo 7 update brings new vehicles, events and SophyAI 2.1

27 mars 2025 à 11:00

Polyphony Digital has kept Gran Turismo 7 fresh and interesting thanks to a solid number of consistent updates, bringing new cars; tracks; physics; features and more. The latest update – Patch 1.57 – brings with it some of the usual additions, as well as enhancements to the game’s SophyAI rival.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, SIE Senior Product Manager Ken Chan wrote, “Gran Turismo players! Update 1.57 for Gran Turismo 7 available as of Wednesday, March 26 at 10:00pm PT / March 27 at 5:00am GMT / 2:00pm JST.”

A mostly standard update for Gran Turismo 7 (with one exception), patch 1.57 brings with it:

  • Aston Martin Vintage ‘18
  • Mazda CX-30 X Smart Edition ‘21
  • Renault Kangoo 1.4 ‘01
  • Cafe menu additions
  • 3 new World Circuit events
  • ‘The Faroe Islands’ Scape

Last but certainly not least, this update brings with it a new version of the company’s advanced SophyAI driver.

Pitched as a more realistic take on how it would feel to race a real-world driver (with dynamic reactions and more), version 2.1 expands the functionality to custom races – letting you go up against Sophy across many more instances.

Hopefully this feature will only continue to improve and expand to more of the game over time. Gran Turismo 7 Update 1.57 is available now. The full list of changes and additions can be found HERE.

Rocksteady Batman game reportedly in development as cross-gen title

27 mars 2025 à 10:00

With Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s post-launch support prematurely coming to an end last year, Rocksteady looks set to move on to their next major project. Rumoured to be another Batman title, a new job listing has now popped up offering a bunch of interesting details.

As discovered by ResetEra user ‘PSES’, Rocksteady recently published a new job listing looking for a ‘Senior Core Engine Programmer’. As part of the job description for an “unannounced AAA title”, the post notes:

“Your work will enable the team to deliver the highest quality game experience on our target hardware, including high-end PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and the next generation of consoles.”

Batman Rocksteady

Beyond the confirmation that the game will be a cross-gen release (meaning it will likely launch alongside the next-gen consoles in 2027 or so), the post also revealed that the team are planning to utilise Unreal Engine 5 for their next project.

While not surprising given the fact that Rocksteady has a long history with UE, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League ran on Unreal Engine 4, and so it will be interesting to see what Rocksteady will be able to achieve with these updated tools.

Following the disappointment that was Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, hopefully Rocksteady will be able to prove themselves worthy of their high reputation.

Upcoming Street Fighter film removed from Sony’s release calendar

26 mars 2025 à 12:15

Ever since the resurgence of films and TV shows based on video games began around 5 years ago or so, we’ve seen countless different projects get unveiled, released, and cancelled. Unfortunately, Sony’s upcoming Street Fighter film has now had its previously-announced release date removed from calendars.

As reported by Deadline, the Sony Pictures-distributed and Legendary-developed Street Fighter film has had its previously-announced release date of the ‘20th of March 2026’ removed from calendars with no current replacement date.

Fortunately, it seems as though this is likely to be a mere bump in the road, with the reason for its release date removal being due to Sony’s global distribution deal with Legendary having ended on the 31st of December last year.

Street Fighter film

That said, it’s entirely possible that this could have greater and more far-reaching ramifications if the project struggles to find a new distributor.

We will have to wait and see, but regardless, there will always be the old classic Street Fighter films to watch and enjoy.

Multiple major publishers reportedly delaying games due to GTA VI

26 mars 2025 à 11:30

Grand Theft Auto is easily one of the biggest names in gaming, with GTA V alone selling over 200 million copies in the decade since its release. With GTA VI slated to come out later this year, many publishers are reportedly getting ready to weather the storm – with plans to delay their games in order to not clash with Rockstar’s upcoming juggernaut.

In a newsletter written by known industry insider Christopher Dring (via TheGameBusiness), the leaker claimed that they’ve heard from 3 major publishers who have all put plans in motion to delay their upcoming titles should they clash with GTA VI.

According to “the boss of one of the world’s biggest game publishers,” Rockstar’s games “always suck a lot of money and, more importantly, time out of the market. We don’t want to be anywhere near that. We are working up multiple different plans for our titles.”

GTA VI Publishers

Another source added: “Even without GTA. It's immensely difficult to find free time for new games to shine. Time is the real scarcity for us, not money. It’s tough out there.”

While we have yet to get an official release date, Take-Two have on multiple occasions reaffirmed that GTA VI is still set to arrive some time this year. Should this wind up being the case, it will be interesting to see exactly how the rest of the industry responds.

Switch 2 is set to have a 3-phase launch plan according to insiders

26 mars 2025 à 10:45

Since the official unveiling of The Nintendo Switch 2 a couple months ago, fans have been eagerly awaiting the full blowout event scheduled for early April. Ahead of this Direct, one insider has revealed Nintendo’s 3-phase strategy for game releases – starting with first-party titles.

As reported by known industry leakers Insider-Gaming, during the recent Game Developers Conference sources spoke to the publication to reveal Nintendo’s “three-phase strategy” when it comes to their game release plans.

According to the publication, the first stage is set for around the Switch 2’s launch (rumoured to be in June) and will focus on first-party launch titles.

Switch 2 3-phase

Phase two meanwhile will arrive in October/November, this time with an emphasis on 3rd-party titles. Finally, the 3rd phase is planned for the Holiday period – though no further details were shared.

As mentioned, the official Switch 2 Direct is set to go live in just a week’s time on the 2nd of April, and so we will likely hear more from Nintendo’s post-release plans then.

Almost 2/3rds of all Cyberpunk 2077 players are on PC

26 mars 2025 à 10:00

Despite its ubiquity across multiple gaming platforms nowadays, CD Projekt Red has always been a PC-centric studio, with the original The Witcher being a PC exclusive and its sequel coming only to Xbox on the console side. Despite selling millions upon millions of copies of both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 across PlayStation/Xbox since, new data has revealed just how much of the audience still hail from CDPR's home platform.

As part of the company’s latest earnings report, CDPR shared a ton of new and interesting details surrounding the platform audience breakdown of both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.

Since its launch back in 2020, Cyberpunk has gone on to sell over 30 million copies – with its Phantom Liberty expansion alone adding a further 8 million. Between all these copies, PC easily takes the greatest market share, with CDPR revealing that 63% of all sales for the game have come from the PC platform. This is followed by PlayStation at 26% and Xbox at 12%.

Cyberpunk 2077 PC

Interestingly, The Witcher 3 saw a much more even distribution of sales across systems, with PlayStation seeing 32.7% of all sales and PC landing at 40.3% (with the remaining 27% split between Xbox and Switch).

Of course, Cyberpunk 2077 is a much more advanced game technologically and graphically when compared to The Witcher 3, lending itself better to PCs. Combine this with an infamous poor launch on consoles, and it makes sense why Cyberpunk 2077 has done so well on PC. It will be interesting to see what the split for The Witcher 4 winds up looking like.

Bloodborne is the 10th best-selling first-party PS4 game of all time

25 mars 2025 à 13:45

While it may have launched as a ‘relatively’ niche title back in 2015, FromSoftware’s PS4 exclusive Bloodborne has only grown in popularity with each passing year. Despite Sony doing very little with the IP since, Bloodborne was in fact one of PlayStation’s biggest PS4 titles of all time.

As reported by known industry analyst Mat Piscatella in honour of Bloodborne’s 10th anniversary, it was revealed that the FromSoftware/PlayStation collaboration worked out massively in the long term.

Though the last official figures placed Bloodborne as having sold 7.5 million copies by February 2022, according to Piscatella the game managed to become one of the biggest for PlayStation during the 8th generation, writing:

“Bloodborne is top 70 all-time in PS4 US full game dollars (phys & digital for DLP). Ranks #12 in PS4 US full game dollars for Sony published titles (10th if you remove Destiny & Destiny 2 which were published by other folks at the time of release).”

Bloodborne PS4

This achievement is extra impressive when considering that the game was one of Sony’s lesser-marketed titles and remains a 1080p 30fps experience with uneven frame pacing and no current-gen (or even PS4 Pro) support.

Whether we will ever see the return of Bloodborne is unknown, but financially at least, it seems as though Sony would be silly not to do more with the IP. Here’s to hoping.

Hazelight Studios’ Split fiction is getting a film adaptation

25 mars 2025 à 13:00

Earlier this month, the team at Hazelight Studios celebrated the launch of their latest title Split Fiction – revealing that the game had sold over 2 million copies in a single week. The title’s early success seems to have resonated across mediums, with a film adaptation of Split fiction said to be now in the works.

As reported by Variety, the highly successful and recently-released local co-op title from Hazelight Studios – Split fiction – is set to get a film adaptation, with a “bidding war” said to be currently ongoing.

Interestingly, this won’t be the first adaptation of one of Hazelight’s projects, with 2021’s It Takes Two previously confirmed to be getting a film, though we’ve heard little from the project since its announcement.

Regardless, the consistency at which Josef Fares / Hazelight’s games are being turned into movies is interesting to see, especially as Fares himself started out as a film director before getting into game development.

Hazelight Split fiction

While we have yet to get any official confirmation of the adaptation, Variety has claimed that work is already underway on the project, with media company Story Kitchen currently “putting together” the cast list, director, writers and more.

Hazelight Studios’ games are well known for their focus on story. Equally however, the titles are celebrated for their creativity within the interactive medium of gaming. As such, it will be interesting to see how both It Takes Two and now Split Fiction wind up performing on the silver screen.

The Sims competitor inZOI dethrones Silksong as the most wishlisted Steam game

25 mars 2025 à 12:15

While EA might be doing very little with The Sims IP, wanting to rest on its laurels with the now 10 year old SIms 4, other studios have come in to pick up the slack. One of the most promising upcoming games in the life-sim genre is inZOI. Set to launch in Early Access latest this week, the title has now surpassed Hollow Knight Silksong as the most-wishlisted game on Steam.

The ambitious life-sim inZOI has seen a great deal of buzz ahead of its Early Access launch on the 28th of March. Aided by a decade-long wait for a Sims 5 which will never come to be, fans of the genre have seemingly found a replacement for EA’s once-loved franchise – now becoming the most-wishlisted game on Steam.

Of course, Steam’s wishlist is dynamic and has seen a change in its rankings over time, but aside from small stints, Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight Silksong has remained at the top for quite a while – making its (likely-temporary) dethroning rather notable.

inZOI Wishlisted

All that said, it will be interesting to see how this changes following its Early Access launch. As mentioned, while seemingly a highly promising title, reactions to inZOI by those who managed to get in ahead of its public launch have walked away with mixed opinions.

Regardless, whether inZOI becomes the next Sims or not, it is exciting to have a new IP with a great deal of promise be met with such high enthusiasm. Hopefully it manages to meet or even exceed expectations.

“A lot more” Xbox games are coming to PS5 and Switch 2 in 2025, claims insider

25 mars 2025 à 11:30

Over the past couple years, we’ve seen Microsoft bring over a select number of first-party Xbox titles to both PlayStation and the Nintendo Switch. Despite Indiana Jones and the Great Circle; DOOM The Dark Ages and Forza Horizon 5 all slated for a PS5 launch this year, one insider has claimed that there are “a lot more” titles planned to be ported in 2025 alone.

Following the official announcement that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be coming to PlayStation 5 on the 17th of April, known insider Tom Warren revealed (via TheVerge) that many more ex-Xbox exclusives can be expected over the course of 2025, writing:

“Microsoft first started launching previous Xbox-exclusive titles like Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded on PS5 last year, and 2025 will include a lot more titles appearing on both PS5 and Nintendo's Switch 2.”

Xbox PS5

As mentioned, 3 titles are already confirmed to be coming to PS5, with many more having been rumoured – including the likes of Starfield; Halo and Gears of War.

Similarly, while Microsoft has yet to officially announce any titles for Switch 2 (likely due to rules put in place by Nintendo), a number of Xbox games have also been rumoured for the Switch’s successor, including the aforementioned DOOM: The Dark Ages; Halo and Starfield.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has the 2nd biggest launch in series history

25 mars 2025 à 10:45

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a pivotal title for Ubisoft as its success could secure the publisher’s future for at least a couple more years. Fortunately for the company, Ubisoft's latest and greatest appears to be pulling its weight, with the title having now achieved the 2nd-biggest launch in the series' history.

As reported by industry analysts TheGameBusiness via Twitter: “Assassin's Creed Shadows is the second biggest Assassin's Creed launch in history (behind 2020's Assassin's Creed Valhalla).”

Putting this figure into a bit more context, Christopher Dring revealed that AC: Shadows has managed to have the biggest launch of the year so far when it comes to physical game sales in the UK – said to be “comfortably ahead of Monster Hunter Wilds” while also outselling Star Wars Outlaws’ 3 months worth of units in just a single week.

Creed Shadows

On a more global front, VGC confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows achieved the “best-ever Day 1 launch on the PlayStation digital store” while also managing to become the most wishlisted game in Ubisoft’s history.

Finally, adding a feather onto their cap, the game also performed strongly on PC, with 27% of all players hailing from the platform – thanks in part to its day-one release on Steam.

All in all, with more than 2 million players so far and multiple records broken, Assassin’s Creed Shadows could wind up being the shot in the arm that Ubisoft have desperately needed. We will have to wait and see.

Minecraft is finally getting a massive visual overhaul in upcoming update

24 mars 2025 à 13:00

Despite evolving over the course of more than a decade, Minecraft has remained pretty much the same since its launch – at least visually. Finally, the game is set to get a massive overhaul to its lighting and atmospherics in the upcoming ‘Vibrant Visuals’ update.

Making the announcement during Minecraft LIVE, the team at Mojang officially unveiled the Vibrant Visuals update, writing:

“Vibrant Visuals is a visual graphics upgrade that will transform the way players experience Minecraft. Initially releasing for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, it is our developer’s vision for what Minecraft looks like with improved visual elements such as directional lighting, volumetric fog, and more.”

More specifically, the update will introduce many new visual techniques, including “thousands of individually crafted elements” – though the most obvious will be the overhaul to lighting and shadows thanks to the addition of volumetrics, making for a vastly different aesthetic.

While not quite the ray-tracing patch which has been teased for years now, the upcoming Vibrant Visuals update will be transformative for the overall look and feel of the game across (hopefully) as many supported devices as possible. Further details on the update can be found HERE.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows to get major PS5 Pro upgrades in future patch

24 mars 2025 à 12:15

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the first new entry in Ubisoft’s stealth-action franchise to take advantage of Sony’s recently-released PS5 Pro. Despite an already solid uptick in visuals, Sony’s Pro console is set to get a further notable boost in visuals via an upcoming patch.

As part of a technology deep-dive conducted by Digital Foundry’s Alex Battaglia, Ubisoft confirmed to the publication that Sony’s PS5 Pro would be seeing further enhancements in a future update.

For the uninitiated, as it stands the PS5 Pro already brings notable improvements over the base machine, including specular ray-tracing; improved resolutions – and the addition of RT reflections specifically in the game’s 30fps mode.

Fortunately, what few downsides the PS5 Pro version currently suffers from should be ironed out in the future, with Ubisoft confirming that “We use our own TAA implementation that we've continuously refined – though we'll add support for PSSR on PS5 Pro in a future update.”

Creed PS5 Pro

While this may give some Pro users pause as the implementation of PSSR has not been the greatest across the board, Ubisoft claimed that “after an in-depth collaboration with Sony over the past few months, many issues have been addressed, mostly around moving vegetation and water – problems that other titles have faced, adding “we're now confident that the image quality with PSSR will always be better than with TAA.”

Beyond this, the Pro’s 40fps Balanced mode is set to also see new benefits, with the publisher confirming: “We've continued to optimise RT reflections and the game in general, and we're happy to say that a future update will enable RT reflections on PS5 Pro's balanced mode.”

Given that Digital Foundry already labelled Assassin’s Creed Shadows as one of the better implementations of PS5 Pro support, it is exciting to hear that things will only get better with time.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows breaks concurrent user record on Steam

24 mars 2025 à 11:30

One of the many changes seen with Assassin’s Creed Shadows prior to its release involved Ubisoft making the title a day-one release on Steam. So far, this pivot seems to have paid off, with AC Shadows breaking its franchise record for the highest peak concurrent users on the platform.

With a peak of 64,825 concurrent players, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is officially the most played entry in the series on Steam – surpassing the previous record holder (AC: Odyssey’s) 62,069 concurrents.

As mentioned, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the first AC game in a long time to launch day-one on Steam, with prior entries having an exclusivity period on PC (via Epic Games and Ubisoft’s Connect launcher).

Creed Steam

As such, it isn’t too surprising to see the latest entry surpass prior titles in this particular metric. Of course, Steam charts are just one way to determine a game’s success.

That said, given that the title has so far surpassed 2 million players in a couple days and has received pretty solid reviews (especially for the series), Assassin’s Creed Shadows could very well become the hit that Ubisoft desperately needs.

Capcom announces upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds Update Showcase

24 mars 2025 à 10:45

As with past Monster Hunter titles, Capcom’s recently-released MH: Wilds will soon be getting its first (of many) major post-launch updates. Labeled as the “first free title update”, the publisher has announced an upcoming showcase ahead of its April release.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Monster Hunter page wrote:

“Join us March 25 at 7am PT/2pm GMT for the Monster Hunter Wilds Showcase, hosted by producer Ryozo Tsujimoto! We'll be detailing the first Free Title Update coming in early April, which includes Mizutsune and a host of other new additions.”

Given how important hunting monsters is in Monster Hunter Wilds, the addition of a new (returning) Leviathan to the game should give plenty for players to sink their teeth into.

What these ‘other additions’ are however is yet to be seen. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait long to find out, as the showcase is set to go live in just a day’s time.

God of War to get surprise spin-off this year, claims insider

24 mars 2025 à 10:00

God of War’s 20th anniversary has officially come and gone, and while we did get a couple cool new things in celebration, the rumoured remaster for the OG trilogy was nowhere to be seen. Fortunately, it does appear a God of War game is in fact slated for launch in 2025 – though it’s said to be a Greece-based spin-off.

Taking to BlueSky, known industry insider / leaker Jeff Grubb offered some tangentially-hopeful news for fans who were waiting for a GoW Remaster announcement, writing:

“OK. Everyone keeps asking about this, so I've tried to find out more: There's still a Greek God of War thing coming out this year, but it's not a remaster collection. It's a new side-story project.”

God of War Spin-off

Offering further context, Grubb added, “I was never told about a Remaster collection, but I asked a source about the rumors (that I saw were focused on a collection) and they told me that nothing God of War would happen at the State of Play but something could show up at the anniversary. ”

As mentioned, the anniversary for God of War 1 has just come and gone (in the US at least). That said, the EU region didn’t see the game until months later on the 8th of July 2005. As such, there remains some time still for PlayStation / Sony Santa Monica to unveil this rumoured project in a timely manner.

KitGuru Games: The Best Console is the One in Your Pocket

23 mars 2025 à 13:00

Emulation is the saving grace of the video games industry. Despite its controversial nature, the technology will be the only way in which all games are preserved for the future – free from licensing agreements and other such nonsense. Better still is the fact that in a majority of cases, emulation allows for a more accurate recreation of the game’s original experience than official offerings, due to countless complex shaders, filters and tweakable settings. And the best part? Thanks to the progression of technology, your humble smartphone is able to do all this and more – giving you the power of 10,000 games in the palm of your hand.

Games Emulation

I won’t belabour the point of why emulation is so important, as I feel most of us are clear on this matter and likely have some familiarity with the practice. Neither will I delve in the legal grey areas of emulation – that’s a tiring discussion for another day.

No, for the purposes of this KitGuru Games my objective is to make clear the benefits and downsides to the different mediums for emulation across the spectrum; and ultimately explaining why I think mobile phones are truly one of the best ways to experience these retro (and not so retro) classics.

Before going into all that, we should establish a baseline, that being the original experience. Should you wish to play any older titles, you’ll have to do one of two things: either pull out your old CRT TV/monitor and hook it up to your console, put in the disc and voila you’re officially gaming – or if you only have a modern HD TV then you’ll likely need to invest in an analogue-to-HDMI converter.

Either instance is far from optimal. While for me being able to have the absolute original experience on a screen in which the games were designed for trumps all other alternatives, owning a CRT in 2025 is becoming increasingly rare and costly. Using HDMI converters on the other hand can lead to an ugly, smeary and stretched out experience if you go for a relatively cheap option. There are of course more costly alternatives out there, however they focus primarily on upscaling and clearing up the picture, rather than translating and maintaining the original visual identity.

With the baseline now set, let’s look into some of the most common devices used for emulation, their benefits, drawbacks and where exactly they stack up against the rest of the pack.

I despise the unremovable pattern on the pillar boxing

Coming in last place are official emulators, meaning the likes of PlayStation 5’s classics collection and the Nintendo Switch’s NSO service. While being able to play older titles on newer hardware is appreciated and should be available for as many systems / games as possible, the current implementation leaves so much to be desired.

On the good front, these official emulators are typically quite user friendly, with little to no faffing about necessary. In addition, they can sometimes include a couple enhancements over the original experience such as being able to save at any point, rewind if necessary and alter the aspect ratio.

If they’re feeling extra generous, the games might also include trophy support and even some old-school filters (though in the case of the latter they are typically rather simple in nature).

I mean, it's better than nothing I guess

That about covers the benefits. On the flip side, as mentioned their support for shaders is typically rudimentary and sometimes inaccurate, leading to a lower-quality representation of the game and its polygons/pixel art. In addition, the selection of games is highly limited in most cases, with a great deal of classics being unavailable for one reason or another – be it a lack of demand or licensing issues.

Unlike most community-driven and open source emulators, these official offerings are also unfortunately rather undercooked, leading to unforeseen issues and consequences. On the PlayStation front, you had 50hz games playing in a 60hz container, leading to an uneven pacing. Switch’s NSO meanwhile saw a number of its games launch with visual bugs and issues, be it the removal of fog, colour inaccuracies and the like.

Given how most people don’t care for the minutiae of emulation (or don’t yet know that they care), these official emulators are viewed as good enough for the general person – letting them play games from their childhood on a HD screen and lament about how it looks so much uglier than they remember.

Coming up second-to-last are emulation handhelds. While they have existed for many years, the past couple have seen an influx in the number of quality devices available across different manufacturers. Be it Anbernic; Retroid Pocket; Miyoo or AYANEO, there are dozens if not hundreds of solid options out there to meet most of your particular needs – satisfying your nostalgic desires with retro throwback designs and colours.

Not only do many of these handhelds feature much higher quality LCD screens than the originals, but can also be the exact size and aspect ratio for a number of different devices leading to minimal pillar or letterboxing. Unfortunately, the screens are one of the retro handheld’s primary downsides.

While yes, in almost all instances the screens attached to these retro handhelds are much superior to the originals, they still pale in comparison to alternatives which we will get to. Be it due to their LCD nature; specific resolutions/aspect ratios or just quality control, you are unlikely to find many retro handhelds which suit the needs of all your older games across different consoles/handhelds. Beyond this, the chipsets powering these devices are typically quite a few years older than current smartphones and the like, leading to lesser support for more modern retro systems.

The lack of horsepower and the low-res displays also means that shaders are pretty much a no-go for most devices. While not an issue if you’re playing a pixel-matched GBA game in which all the subpixels align with the original system, but then wanting to play a SNES title on the same handheld presents a far inferior visual experience.

While almost a one-size-fits-all – and great for that dedicated retro handheld feel – these devices are just a couple years away still from being able to do all that they were designed for; especially depending on the operating system used for the device.

In the runner-up spot is the Steam Deck, more specifically the Steam Deck OLED. To get it out of the way, the original Steam Deck would have fallen far further down this list due to the many issues I already addressed regarding LCD panels (and to be honest, the Steam Deck’s LCD screen is incredibly middling).

Thanks to its HDR OLED screen however, the refreshed Steam Deck is shot up near the top of the ranks, showcasing just how important a good screen can be for one’s gaming experience. One benefit of an OLED’s expanded colour spectrum is the fact that emulators can allow you to then tweak the screen’s colour values to match specific colour palettes of different devices for a more accurate representation of the image and its colour science.

In addition, while perhaps not the perfect shape, the Steam Deck’s 16:10 aspect ratio offers greater support for narrower/older games thanks to that extra bit of added height. Being a linux-based device, the Steam Deck has excellent support for a wide variety of emulators including Retroarch – which thanks to its near infinite customisation means the Steam Deck also has near infinite options when it comes to emulation settings.

While not the beefiest system in the world, the Steam Deck is more than powerful enough to play most if not all games, even including some 7th-gen titles. Sadly, one of the Steam Deck’s biggest benefits is also one of its major drawbacks.

Despite being a beautiful OLED screen with more than enough resolution to play games of all kinds at a great enough pixel density for a pleasant presentation, the 800p display is unfortunately too low-res for a majority of the more impactful shader options, which in my opinion is just as if not more important than the remaining aspects of emulation.

I can deal with many emulation quirks, but having an ugly image is not one of them. Of course, no matter what, the picture will look preferable to that of an analogue-HDMI converter due to its much smaller screen size when compared to TVs, but it is still too far removed from the original experience to be good enough for my personal proclivities.

Finally, we’ve reached the perfect emulation machine – the smartphone. To get it out of the way quickly, I’ll be switching things around this time and starting with the bad: you will probably need to buy a controller accessory. That’s pretty much it. From my years of emulating on mobile this is the main downside I encountered.

The one other possible issue could be the aspect ratio of most smartphones. Over the years, as phones have gotten increasingly taller, many smartphones unfortunately need to feature black bars across the sides of the screen, in particular when it comes to 4:3 titles. That said, this is dependent on the smartphone and as such is not a problem in the case of my Google Pixel Fold.

Flipping over to the good side now, the aspect ratio can also be seen as a plus. Thanks to these tall proportions and support for touch screens, both the Nintendo DS and 3DS (alongside slower RPG and turn-based games) are excellently represented on mobile, featuring not only a similar shape to the original handhelds, but a similar size too. The same can be said for most other handhelds when held vertically – though this could lead to some wasted screen space depending on how you choose to control the game.

We’re just getting started on screens however. In today’s day and age, pretty much any and all smartphones that you buy will feature a high resolution OLED screen, with the lower-end typically offering a 120hz 1080p display. Even in this lower-end, the smartphone screen smashes all others listed above in terms of accuracy, pixel density, brightness; input lag and more; allowing us to make use of emulators’ most transformative technology – shaders.

Even a basic shader can make a substantial difference

Even a basic shader can make a notable difference

Thanks to the pixel density packed into a 6 and a half-ish inch 2K OLED screen, smartphones are able to replicate many complex display types using multi-layered shaders – going so far as to accurately represent the subpixel structure of an LCD screen for handheld titles, or the analogue scanlines; bloom; distortion and more needed to make a correct-feeling CRT experience.

Despite the small screen, the quality of the shaders in combination with a smartphone's super bright 1000+ nits displays can make it feel as though you are peering through your phone and into a portalised Cathode Ray Tube TV; darkening your surroundings and leaving nothing but you and the game in front of you.

Another aforementioned drawback which can actually be a benefit is the requirement to purchase a controller. Though of course an added cost, in recent years we have seen the market explode with a ton of different and unique mobile accessories, from telescopic controllers to vertical oriented ones; sleek and modern to more throwback designs, you’ll likely find a controller with the exact size, shape and button-feel as you desire.

My personal favourite is the Hyperkin SmartBoy controller which makes great use of a phone’s aspect ratio to allow for an experience eerily close to an original GBA. In addition, all these controllers being removable means that they are much more portable than the likes of the Steam Deck.

Just a small sample of the MANY available shaders

Like the Steam Deck however, the smartphone (and in particular Android) offers just as much in the way of customisation as any PC when it comes to emulators. If you want you can simply hop onto the Play Store and download a basic but highly functional and sleek multipurpose app such as Lemuroid, or you can go for something more purpose built and specific such as PPSSPP; Dolphin and Pizza Boy.

Last but certainly not least, those who want it all can install Retroarch and go wild with as many shaders and bits of customisation as desired. You really can make the whole experience as simple or as complex as you desire.

Finally, smartphones nowadays are powerful, and I mean really POWERFUL. Aside from the most demanding of console ports, a majority of mid-range and above smartphones are more than powerful enough to emulate decades worth of systems – with recent advancements in both mobile software and hardware allowing consoles as recent as the Switch to look and run better on mobile than the hardware itself. We’ve even started to see Windows emulation come into play, making the bounds of the platform truly endless.

Considering the fact that it will only get better with time, smartphones are given far less credit than they deserve when it comes to gaming – and when all said and done are right up there with dedicated consoles for the best gaming devices available.

Wreckfest 2 is out now in Early Access

21 mars 2025 à 13:00

Last year, Bugbear Entertainment officially announced that they were working on a sequel to the much-loved Wreckfest. With the game officially out now in Early Access, the team have shared a ton of new details on both the current and future state of Wreckfest 2.

Alongside the official Early Access launch of Wreckfest 2, the team at Bugbear Entertainment have explained their thought process surrounding the game and its EA release, writing:

“Just like its predecessor, Wreckfest 2 will keep evolving throughout Early Access, with fresh content and features rolling in regularly. Bugbear and THQ Nordic are all about making this a game for the players, shaped by the players. We want your feedback – tell us what you love, what you want more of, and what crazy ideas we absolutely need to implement. We’ve got a truckload of ideas (and an actual truck), but we want to hear which ones you like the most!”

They continued, “Now, a fair warning: don’t expect Wreckfest 2’s Early Access version to be as jam-packed with content as Wreckfest 1 after nearly a decade of updates, patches, and DLCs. This is just the beginning of an epic ride, and the game will grow with regular updates, guided by our living roadmap – powered by you.”

Currently, the game is priced at £24.99 and includes:

  • Single-player racing & derby with up to 24 players (bots)
  • Multiplayer racing & derby with up to 24 players + bot support
  • 3 maps with multiple tracks (6 in total)
  • 1 Singleplayer Map Stunt arena
  • 4 Cars
  • Basic paint customization for all cars
  • Garage to edit & save car designs
  • Early version of the replay mode
  • Leaderboard support

While an overall rather light package, much of the work done for Wreckfest 2 has been with the game’s underbelly – including the destruction tech; physics engine and more.

Hopefully this marks a strong start for Wreckfest 2 (and hopefully the team can get new cars/tracks out at a regular cadence.)

Apple Arcade reportedly saw just 2 million subscribers in its first year

21 mars 2025 à 12:15

All the way back in 2019, Apple launched its Arcade subscription service – letting iOS/Mac users access over 100 games ranging from ad-free classics to Apple Arcade exclusives. Despite continued support, the service has reportedly seen quite little in the way of adoption with just 2 million users in its first year.

In a report titled ‘Apple Streaming Losses Top $1 Billion a Year’ (paywalled), publication The Information spoke on a range of the iPhone maker’s current services from TV+ to Apple News+ and more.

In discussing Apple Arcade specifically, The Information revealed that the company saw just 2 million users join Apple Arcade in its first year of operation – 25% of which were using a free trial.

Of course, as mentioned, the service has existed since 2019 and so has had many years since to attract further customers, especially with new exclusives.

Apple Arcade Million

Even so, 2 million in one year seems like a low figure for a company whose user base exceeds 2 billion across its products (a majority of which support Apple Arcade).

All that being said, Apple has near-infinite money to burn on whatever project they desire, and so it is at least nice to see the company continue to invest in new games from iconic franchises.

Phil Spencer addresses Halo TV show’s failings

21 mars 2025 à 11:30

While Microsoft has seen massive success with the release of the Fallout TV show, the console maker’s other efforts in bringing its IPs to TV has not fared as well. In the wake of the cancellation of Paramount’s Halo TV show last year, Xbox head Phil Spencer claims to have “learned from doing Halo.”

In an interview discussing the upcoming ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Phil Spencer spoke to Variety on Xbox’s past history with video game adaptations, saying:

“We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more.”

Spencer Halo

Spencer continued, “We learned from doing ‘Halo.’ We learned from doing ‘Fallout.’ So all of these build on themselves. And obviously we’ll have a couple that miss. But what I’d say to the Xbox community that likes this work is: You’re going to see more, because we’re gaining confidence and we’re learning through this.”

Unfortunately, as expected, Spencer did not state exactly what these lessons were, just that Xbox has ‘learned’ from its past. We will simply have to wait and see what becomes of the Minecraft film when it arrives in a couple weeks’ time.

Housemarque CEO talks Saros and growing development costs

21 mars 2025 à 10:45

With each passing console generation, we’ve seen the average cost of video game development balloon into upwards of hundreds of millions of dollars. In a surprising move, the next game from PlayStation Studios’ Housemarque – Saros – has a relatively modest budget for a first-party title.

In an interview conducted by the Finnish publication ‘Helsingin Sanomat’ (and translated by WCCFTECH), the CEO of Housemarque Ilari Kuittinen offered some of the first details we’ve heard regarding the upcoming arcadey rogue-like Saros since its initial announcement last month.

While little was revealed regarding the game’s narrative or mechanics, Kuittinen did claim that the title would not have been possible had the studio remained independent due to its development cost.

Housemarque Saros

Interestingly, despite this, Saros looks to have one of the more modest budgets for a AAA first-party title, with the publication revealing it to be around the same as Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake 2 ($70 million).

With other first-party titles costing up to $300 million on Sony’s front (and closer to a billion for Xbox with Call of Duty), seeing a major upcoming AAA game’s budget be less than $100 million is a welcome surprise.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows surpasses 1 million players on day-one

21 mars 2025 à 10:00

After a ton of waiting and many delays, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is finally here. While Ubisoft’s latest AC title may not be able to singlehandedly dig the publisher out of the hole it’s found itself in, initial response to the game appears solid, with the title having surpassed 1 million players in just a couple hours.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Assassin’s Creed page wrote “It's not even 4PM here in Canada and Assassin's Creed Shadows has already passed 1 million players! Thank YOU from the bottom of our hearts for joining this adventure in Feudal Japan. We are beyond excited to start this journey with you!”

While an impressive figure, given that the game only launched at 2PM in the region, Ubisoft made sure to specify that Shadows had amassed 1 million players – not 1 million copies solid.

Shadows 1 million

With the publisher’s offering of its Ubisoft+ subscription (which includes day-one titles), it is unknown how many of these 1 million players are buyers and how many are playing through Ubisoft’s service.

All that said, the publisher isn’t one to shy away from celebrating a game’s success, and so we will have to wait and see what else Ubisoft has to say about Assassin’s Creed Shadows over the coming days.

Plants vs. Zombies Reloaded has been rated in Brazil

20 mars 2025 à 13:45

Plants vs Zombies is a classic lane-based tower defence game which released back in 2009 to a great deal of success. Since then, the game has gotten a couple sequels and multiple spin-offs. The first PvZ still holds a place in many people’s hearts – and in recognition of this PopCap seems to be bringing the OG game back in a new form with Plants vs. Zombies Reloaded.

As discovered by the publication Gematsu, a new game – listed as Plants vs. Zombies Reloaded – has appeared on the Brazilian ratings board.

Said to be coming to PS5; Xbox Series; Switch; PC; iOS; as well as Android, little else can be gleaned from the listing currently.

Plants vs. Zombies Reloaded

Interestingly, while the PS5, Xbox Series and Switch would be getting this classic for the first time, Plants vs. Zombies has been available on PC since 2009 – and on iOS/Android since 2010/2011 respectively.

That said, the current version is rife with ads and various in-app purchases and so hopefully this Reloaded release serves as a nice way to play the original PvZ with little to no interruptions and at a reasonable price.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the OG Plants vs. Zombies? Would you consider it a classic? Will EA mess up this release somehow? Let us know your thoughts down below.
