Ecuadorians are voting in a presidential election that has shaped up to be a repeat of the 2023 race, when they chose a young, conservative millionaire over the former leftist president’s protege.

Luisa González and the incumbent, Daniel Noboa, are the clear frontrunners in the pool of 16 candidates. All have promised to reduce the widespread crime that pushed the country into an unnerving new normal four years ago.

Australia crush Sri Lanka in second Test to complete rare series sweep

Australia have capped off a brilliant summer with a nine-wicket defeat of Sri Lanka that confirms their first clean sweep of a subcontinent Test series in almost 20 years.

Chasing just 75 runs in sunny Galle on Sunday, Australia (75-1) secured victory in the second Test and two-match series when Marnus Labuschagne (26 not out) hit the winning run to square leg just before lunch on day four.

Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s first president, dies aged 95

Charismatic father of the nation led the fight for independence from South Africa and ruled for 15 years as the country’s first president

Sam Nujoma, the fiery freedom fighter who led Namibia to independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990 and served as its first president for 15 years, has died aged 95.

Nujoma’s death was announced Sunday by current Namibian president Nangolo Mbumba. Mbumba said Nujoma died on Saturday night after being hospitalised in the capital, Windhoek.

Australia’s Tyler Wright makes surfing history with second Pipe Pro title

Australia’s Tyler Wright has made surfing history, becoming the first woman to win Hawaii’s iconic Pipe Pro event twice as she snapped her title drought. The two-time world champion beat American defending world champion Caitlin Simmers in a low-scoring final on Sunday (AEDT) at Banzai Pipeline.

Wright won the first women’s Pipe Pro in 2020 and Simmers took out the event a year ago. Simmers was shut down on a wave with a minute left, and Wright won the opening round of the season 7.70 to 3.94.

Narendra Modi’s ruling Hindu nationalist party has won the most seats in the high-stakes state legislature election in India’s federal territory for the first time in more than a quarter-century.

Modi’s Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) won 47 seats in the 70-member assembly that includes India’s capital, New Delhi, ousting the Aam Aadmi party (AAP), which has ruled it since 2015. The AAP won 22 seats. The outcome of the race in one remaining seat had yet to be declared, according to the Election Commission of India.

Alaska plane crash: remains of all 10 victims have been recovered, authorities say

Ten people died in the crash on Thursday, and authorities are still trying to piece together why the aircraft went down

The remains of all 10 people killed when their small plane crashed into ice on the Bering Sea have been recovered, authorities said.

The Nome Volunteer Fire Department made the announcement on its Facebook page Saturday afternoon. Recovery crews had been racing to recover the bodies before a winter storm was expected to hit the region.

“All 10 individuals aboard the Bering Air plane have been officially brought home,” the fire department wrote in the social media post at about 3pm.

Crews were still working on recovering the aircraft, the fire department said.

The Bering Air single-engine turboprop plane was traveling from Unalakleet to the hub community of Nome when it disappeared on Thursday afternoon. It was found the next day after an extensive search with all nine passengers and the pilot dead.
