In the UK, more than 170 women have been murdered by their sons in the past 15 years. An anonymous mother reveals what it is like to be frightened of your child while desperately wanting to support him

I am staring at the faces of women on my screen, transfixed by emotions too complex to disentangle; discernible, though, are grief, rage... and fear.

For the women pictured are some of the more than 170 who have been killed by their sons in the UK in the past 15 years. Their appalling tragedy – being killed by the person to whom they gave life – has a chilling resonance. Like many of those whose deaths have been highlighted in the 2,000 Women report by the Femicide Census, I am a professional with adored adult children and a close circle of friends. I am also frightened of my son.

Northern Ireland police chief appeals to students over serial rapist Zhenhao Zou

Zou found guilty of raping 10 women in the UK and China, but police fear he may have attacked more than 50 women

Northern Ireland’s police chief has appealed to students who may have had concerns about the serial rapist Zhenhao Zou, who studied at Queen’s University Belfast for two years.

Jon Boutcher, the chief constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, said the force had been unable to speak before the conviction this week of Zou, who is feared to have drugged and attacked more than 50 women while in London.

Zhenhao Zou: ‘charming’ PhD student who filmed dozens of attacks on women

Police say it could be ‘extraordinary amount of time’ before scale of crimes is known, as UCL student convicted of raping 10 women

Zhenhao Zou thought, acted and offended as if he was untouchable. When detectives searched the south London flat he rented for thousands of pounds a month, they found the trappings of a comfortable, if not lavish, lifestyle.

DCI Richard Mackenzie said of the search in January 2024: “There were designer bags, jewellery, a Rolex, designer clothes, some in the wardrobe with the tags still on.”

Nearly one in 10 women who have died at the hands of men in the UK in the past 15 years were killed by their sons. Here are 10 such cases

A report has revealed that more than 170 mothers across the UK have been killed by their sons in the past 15 years – nearly one in 10 of all women who died at the hands of men.

Here we look at 10 cases of mothers killed by their sons. They underline the range of ages, backgrounds and family circumstances of the victims and perpetrators, and some key factors – most strikingly, mental health problems – that led to the killings.

In the UK, Samaritans can be contacted on 116 123 and the domestic abuse helpline is 0808 2000 247. In Australia, the crisis support service Lifeline is on 13 11 14 and the national family violence counselling service is on 1800 737 732. In the US, the suicide prevention lifeline is 1-800-273-8255 and the domestic violence hotline is 1-800-799-SAFE (7233). Other international helplines can be found via www.befrienders.org
