‘Pandamonium’ as giant pandas from China make debut at DC’s National Zoo

Three-year-old bears Qing Bao and Bao Li can be seen on the zoo’s ‘giant panda cam’ after arriving in US in October

Two new giant pandas made their public debut at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington DC on Friday morning amid growing excitement about newcomers to the nation’s capital, quickly dubbed by some media outlets as “pandamonium”.

The three-year-old pandas, Qing Bao, whose name means “green treasure” in Mandarin, and Bao Li, whose name means “active and vital power”, arrived in the US from China last October, making them the first pandas to come to DC from China in 24 years, but have been in quarantine since.

Jan Johnson arrested after deputies made discovery during search warrant in investigation into animal neglect

A woman in California was arrested on Wednesday after authorities discovered 27 dead horses across multiple properties, police said.

Jan Johnson of Clements, California, was arrested and booked into the San Joaquin county jail on multiple charges, officials said, including cruelty to an animal, threatening a public official, criminal threats, and possession of a short-barrel shotgun.

Bishop who angered Trump with call for mercy says she will not apologize

Mariann Edgar Budde defends sermon asking president to show compassion to immigrants and LGBTQ+ people

The bishop at the National Cathedral prayer service in Washington on Tuesday who urged Donald Trump to “have mercy upon” immigrants and LGBTQ+ people, has defended her remarks and said that she will not apologize.

The Right Rev Mariann Edgar Budde’s sermon on Tuesday garnered national attention when she made a direct plea to Trump to show mercy and compassion toward scared individuals, including “gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families”, as well as immigrants, and those fleeing war and persecution.
