Federal ‘click to cancel subscriptions’ rule struck down in court [U]

A “click to cancel” law was last month passed in California, and now the FTC has ratified a federal rule designed to achieve the same goal. The idea of both is to force companies to make it as easy to cancel an online or app subscription as it is to sign up in the first place.

Update: Following a court challenge, the US Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals has vacated the rule. See update at the end …

Grok chatbot silenced as even Musk saw how awful it was

HBO Max comes full circle, and this time your apps will auto-update

The HBO streaming video app became HBO Max when the company added Warner Bros movies and Turner TV shows. In the worst rebrand since Twitter became X, the company later dropped the unique and valuable HBO part of the name and kept the generic and worthless Max part.

Report: Apple in active negotiations for Formula 1 streaming rights in the US

Apple is in active talks to acquire the rights to broadcast the sport of Formula 1 on its own streaming service platform, through the Apple TV app, according to a new report from the Financial Times. The league’s current deal with ESPN expires at the end of this year.

If a deal materializes, Apple would stream Formula 1 in the US starting with the 2026 season. However, Apple is not believed to be the only bidder and exact nature of the company’s proposal is currently unknown.

Tim Cook has a new deputy but Apple’s next CEO is probably still someone else

Jeff Williams, often considered Tim Cook’s successor, is leaving Apple. Sabih Khan, a 30-year veteran of the company, is Apple’s next chief operating officer. Does Khan taking Cook’s old job make him CEO-designate? Jeff Williams retiring certainly clears the path for Khan to climb up the succession planning ladder. However, I would wager that Apple’s CEO succession plan isn’t changing.

Apple design team to start reporting directly to Tim Cook later this year

Apple today announced that COO Jeff Williams will retire later this year, with Sabih Khan set to assume the COO role later this month.

In addition to his role as COO, however, Williams is also responsible for overseeing Apple’s design team. Once Williams officially retires later this year, Apple says that the design team will begin reporting directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook.
