UK competition regulator wants iPhone browser competition, but Apple not allowed to win [U]

The UK competition watchdog has effectively told Apple that it must allow free and open competition between iPhone web browsers, but at the same time Safari cannot be better than its competitors.

Update: The final report is now out, with no change to the CMA’s stance.

Apple has responded by stating that making new features available within WebKit “would lead to free-riding” by developers creating competing browsers …

Apple commenter John Gruber launches blistering attack on ‘rotten’ Apple over Siri vaporware

John Gruber is one of the more high-profile Apple commenters, and generally takes a pretty upbeat view of the company, so it was a big surprise to see him launch a blistering attack on the iPhone maker.

Referring to Apple advertising Siri features which don’t yet exist, he argues that the company is “in disarray if not crisis,” is making “bullshit” claims, and has “squandered” its reputation with “a fiasco” …

Jon Hamm leads a secret life of crime in this new Apple TV+ series, watch the trailer here

Apple TV+ today released the trailer for its buzzy new drama series, called Your Friends & Neighbors. The show stars Jon Hamm in the lead role as a man named Coop, a hedge fund manager who is down on his luck. In an effort to maintain his luxurious lifestyle, he turns to the world of crime, secretly stealing possessions from his affluent neighbors to sell them on.

The show has received early praise and — months ahead of its premiere — Apple renewed the show for a second season as another sign of confidence in the project. Watch the trailer after the break …

Is it time for some truly colorful MacBook Air models? [Poll]

One of the most attention-grabbing aspects of the new M4 MacBook Air was the announcement of a new color: sky blue. While I’m of the view that gadgets should be silver or black, plenty of people clearly welcome the idea of more colorful MacBook Air models.

Only, reviewers all seem to agree that the new blue color isn’t very, well, either blue or colorful. So is it time for Apple to offer some truly colorful MacBook Air finishes … ?

At least one iPhone 17 model to get liquid cooling, says 3rd report

There have been a couple of previous reports suggesting that at least one iPhone 17 model will run cooler, thanks to a hi-tech liquid cooling system known as a vapor chamber. This has today been backed by a third one – though it’s uncertain which models will get the new feature.

While Apple chips have grown progressively more powerful each year, they can run hot when performing demanding tasks like running graphic-intensive games, forcing the device to reduce power …

Apple adds new disclaimer on its website advertising delayed AI Siri features

Apple is still reeling from the last-week’s news that the most compelling new Apple Intelligence features for Siri have been indefinitely delayed. Over the weekend, it pulled a YouTube ad showcasing personal context running on the .

Now, it has updated the Apple website with a new disclaimer wherever the unreleased Siri features are mentioned on the iPhone marketing pages.
