Apple Notes got a power user feature in iOS 18 that’s rare in other apps

But a few years back, Apple started investing heavily in making Notes a worthy competitor with third-party alternatives. When it comes to building out a HomeKit environment, I always look for products that do more than one thing. The checks a lot of boxes. It’s a HomeKit Secure Video camera, but it also doubles as a hub for other Aqara sensors and accessories, so they can to work with HomeKit. I thought my days of wearing a smartwatch were over, after making the switch to dumb watches and relying instead on a smart ring, but the chance to try out a $65 Apple Watch clone proved too intriguing to refuse!

I fully expected it to be pretty terrible. But while I wouldn’t recommend buying the WithIt Giga instead of an Apple Watch, I was actually quite pleasantly surprised …

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, or IC3 for short. Since its inception in 2000, the organization has released an annual report detailing trends based on the thousands of cybercrime complaints it receives daily from victims. This week, the FBI released its 2024 Internet Crime Report, revealing a record $16.6 billion in reported losses—a 33% increase and “a new record for losses reported to IC3.”

If there’s one thing this report highlights best, it’s that humans are more vulnerable than machines.

By 2027, Apple to import all iPhones sold in the US from India, rather than China

In the wake of the recent tariffs debacle, both Bloomberg and The Financial Times are reporting that Apple aims to manufacture import almost all of its iPhones sold in the United States from India, rather than China, by the end of next year.

This means Apple would need India to make more than 60 million phones a year, in order to satisfy its domestic sales. Overall India iPhone assembly would have to approximately double to meet this target, to about 80 million per year.

Apple removing key robotics team from John Giannandrea’s oversight

Apple is preparing another leadership shakeup, this time for its secretive robotics team. Bloomberg reports that Apple is shifting its robotics team from AI chief John Giannandrea to John Ternus, its Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering.

This move comes just a month after Apple removed Siri from Giannandrea’s oversight after Tim Cook “lost confidence in the ability” of the former Google executive to “execute on product development.” Siri is now led by Mike Rockwell, the creator of Apple Vision Pro, who reports to software boss Craig Federighi.

Ray-Ban Meta glasses now offer a live translation feature to all owners, after an earlier small-scale test. You can download language packs in advance, enabling translation even when you don’t have a mobile data connection.

The Meta AI features, which lets you ask the glasses questions about what you’re seeing, has also now launched in EU countries, and there are new frame and lens combos too …

TSMC chips to hit 1.4nm in 2028, with confusing name confirmed

Apple chipmaker TSMC says that it will make chips with a sub-2nm process size for the first time ever in 2028, and that the development of 1.4nm chips will allow for greater AI capabilities.

The iPhone maker is generally first in line for the company’s most advanced chipmaking capabilities, so we can expect the chips – slightly confusingly dubbed A14 – to debut in 2028 iPhones …

Anger as Meta AI chatbot added to WhatsApp, raising privacy fears

WhatsApp users have expressed frustration at the fact that there is no way to remove the new Meta AI chatbot feature from the messaging app, raising concerns that the company is seeking to use their private chats to train the bot.

Meta says the AI chatbot can’t read messages unless one of the chat participants chooses to share it, but adds that the company is “listening to feedback” from users …

Apple appealing $570M EU fine, White House says it won’t be tolerated [U]

Apple was yesterday fined €500M ($570M) by the EU for its App Store policies. Apple has now responded, stating that it is being unfairly targeted, with the White House also weighing in to describe fines levied against Apple and Meta as “extortion.”

Update: While there had earlier appeared some softenting in position on both sides of the antitrust dispute, Apple has now told us that it will appeal the ruling – see the end of the piece …

Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders are now live at Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and more. Nintendo hosted its long-awaited Switch 2 Direct on April 2, 2025 after officially unveiling the new Switch 2 console back in January, and, after pre-orders were initially delayed, they are finally set to go live at (just about) all major retailers in the U.S any minute, and it might be a good idea to go get in the queue folks, just in case.
