Terry Newman: Was Ruby Dhalla too much of a threat to Mark Carney?

24 février 2025 à 21:38
Last Friday, leadership hopeful Ruby Dhalla found out, live, on-air, from CBC Power and Politics' David Cochrane, that the Liberal Party had disqualified her from the race for "extremely serious" violations. Dhalla called these allegations "false and fabricated" suggesting that they were levelled against her in order to "complete Mark Carney's coronation." One thing's for sure, her disqualification happened in the eleventh hour — the story broke just before 5 p.m. EST on Friday, with the two Liberal leadership debates taking place Monday and Tuesday in Montreal.  Read More

Simon Jolin-Barrette: Québec and Alberta are historic allies in combating crime

24 février 2025 à 21:00
In my capacity as Québec minister of justice and minister responsible for Canadian relations, I wish to express my support for Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s recent initiatives to bolster the fight against crime and ensure public safety. In her February 10, 2025 letter addressed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, she emphasized the impact of recent legislative changes adopted by the Liberal government on public confidence in our justice system and, more specifically, the confidence of victims. We agree with this viewpoint. Read More

How Doug Ford keeps steamrolling his Ontario election critics: Full Comment podcast

24 février 2025 à 15:14
They said that calling an early provincial election was hubris, yet Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford may win an even bigger majority on Feb. 27. They scoffed when he claimed a vote was needed to fight U.S. tariffs, but that turned out to be all Ontarians were thinking about. And, as Brian Lilley discusses this week with Postmedia Ontario columnists Chris Selley and Lorrie Goldstein, Ford’s tough-talking tariff campaign has only boosted his popularity. One reason they suggest Ford is winning could be that Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie and NDP Leader Marit Stiles can’t understand what voters see in the guy. But they also weigh whether voters have simply lost faith in idealistic politicians promising they can fix things. (Recorded Feb. 21, 2025.) Read More

J.D. Tuccille: Rank-and-file Democrats are done with the party’s woke obsessions

24 février 2025 à 12:00
Months after voters handed them an unexpectedly stiff loss — widely interpreted as a thorough repudiation by the electorate — Democrats are confused about which direction to turn. Or, more accurately, party leaders seem committed to going further in the progressive direction while the rank and file would like a whole lot less of that. Read More

Janice MacKinnon: Carney repackages Trudeau’s climate plan, hopes we won’t notice

24 février 2025 à 12:00
Mark Carney portrays himself as a political outsider and Liberal leadership candidate who represents change. One of his few policy proposals is to replace the consumer carbon tax with a complex regulatory scheme that will result in a higher industrial carbon tax on big emitters and subsidies for consumer purchases of environmentally friendly products. Further he will place tariffs on products from countries with weak carbon policies as well as tighten financial regulations that will make it more difficult for big emitters to raise capital. Canadian taxpayers will not be better off since companies will pass on their increased costs to consumers, who will lose the consumer carbon tax rebates, and only prosperous Canadians will be able to take advantage of subsidies for products like electric cars. Terry Newman: Carney did not protect Canadians from the 2008 financial crisis

24 février 2025 à 12:00
Recently, Mark Carney sat back and failed to negate the claim that he deserved credit for having saved Canadian banks from the misadventures of our American neighbours during the 2008 financial crisis. Carney can claim no such credit. In actuality, there are historical reasons for Canada's lack of vulnerability to such financial upsets, including a divergent institutional pathway and regulatory changes recommended by Canadian Supreme Court Judge Willard Estey that safe-guarded Canada's banking system from the financial crisis. Colby Cosh: A CBC head tax — the next big Liberal idea that no one asked for

23 février 2025 à 12:00
On Thursday morning, the federal heritage minister, Pascale St-Onge, gave forth the outlines of her plan to reform the CBC and adapt it to the future. You might think such an exercise would involve asking questions about the CBC’s prior performance, or whether a state broadcaster is really necessary in the 21st century, or exactly what parts of it are essential.
