How to Watch the Super Bowl Live for Free in 2025: Chiefs vs. Eagles

9 février 2025 à 00:15

Super Bowl 59 is almost here, and it has all of the intrigue you'd expect from the biggest live event of the year. It's the Kansas City Chiefs vs. the Philadelphia Eagles battling it out for the title. While this is a rematch of Super Bowl 57, it is also the chance for the Chiefs to win a third consecutive Super Bowl Championship.

The Kansas City Chiefs, led by popular quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce, are favored to win going into the event. All eyes are on them this year as they hope to defend their legacy. The drama kicks off on Sunday, February 9.

When Does the Super Bowl Start in 2025?

Super Bowl 59 starts on Sunday, February 9 at 6:30pm ET / 3:30pm PT. The big game is taking place in the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, the home of the Saints. The Super Bowl pregame show will begin much earlier, so you can tune in starting at 1pm ET / 10am PT for the commentary.

What about the Halftime Show?

If you don't care about the actual game and just want to tune in for Kendrick Lamar's Halftime Show, there is unfortunately not an exact time it takes place. That being said, the first half of the game usually takes around two hours, which would put the halftime show start time somewhere around 8 or 8:30pm ET.

How to Watch the Super Bowl Live

Super Bowl 59 will be airing on Fox in 2025. The Fox Network is available on different TV channels depending on what U.S. city you're located in. To find out what channel Fox is actually on in your location, ou can use this helpful guide that lists local channels by city. If your TV doesn't have a built-in antenna, you may want to invest in a good external TV antenna, or check out where to watch the game online below.

How to watch online for free

There are a few different ways to watch the Super Bowl online for free, but the easiest option is Tubi.com. Tubi is owned by Fox and is one of the better free streaming services. You don't need to pay for a subscription; you just need to make an account and you can stream the event for free. It also includes all of the same Super Bowl commercials as the main broadcast, so you won't miss out on those either.

Alternative ways to watch the big game for free are utilizing free trials for popular live TV services. This includes FuboTV, which currently offers a seven-day free trial, as well as DirecTV Stream, which has a five-day free trial for new subscribers.

How to Watch Live in the UK for Free

If you live across the pond, you'll be happy to know that Super Bowl 59 will be airing live on ITV1 this year. You can also stream it live onlie via ITVX if you plan on watching from your phone, tablet, or computer.

Beyond that, you could make use of one of the better VPNs for streaming to log in to Tubi outside of the U.S. and stream it online. We recommend ExpressVPN for all-things streaming in this regard.

Murder Mystery 2 is an asymmetric horror game where you play as one of three roles: an innocent, a murderer or a sheriff. From there, the match plays out similarly to social deduction games like Among Us. The murderer stalks the map, killing unsuspecting innocents, who try to flee to survive. Meanwhile, the sheriff tries to deduce who the killer is so they can shoot them to save the innocents.

Each round ends when the murderer kills all the innocents or is taken down by the sheriff, so you’ll need to be suspicious of everyone, watch your back and be cautious to survive.

Firaxis Makes Surprise Sid Meier's Civilization 7 - VR Announcement

8 février 2025 à 19:00

Firaxis has announced a virtual reality version of the recently released Civilization 7.

Sid Meier's Civilization 7 - VR is the long-running strategy franchise’s first foray into VR, and launches spring 2025 exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S.

Publisher 2K Games said Sid Meier's Civilization 7 - VR is developed by PlaySide Studios, which worked on VR games The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and Meta Horizon Worlds.

Here’s the official blurb:

In Civilization 7 - VR, the world of Civilization is brought to life like never before. The map takes shape atop a Command Table that lets you peer down from high above or lean all the way in to appreciate the finer details of buildings and units, like a tabletop game come to life. Players will chart a course for their people and engage face-to-face with iconic world leaders around the Command Table, each reacting as you forge alliances or declare war through the Ages.
Civilization 7 - VR is available to play in either immersive virtual reality or mixed reality, and you'll be able to freely switch between the two at any time. In virtual reality, players are transported to an ornate museum as they look out onto a vista personalized to their leader; in mixed reality, the Command Table adapts to its placement in a player's physical space. Detailed dioramas can be viewed in The Archives, a room in your museum dedicated to your gameplay achievements displayed in both virtual and mixed reality. In addition to single-player, Civilization 7 - VR can compete to rule the world in online multiplayer matches with up to three other Meta Quest 3 and 3S players.

Firaxis’ 4X strategy sequel is currently available on PC and console to those who paid more for advanced access, and they’re certainly letting their voices be known in Steam user reviews, highlighting issues with the user interface, a lack of map variety, and a feeling that Civilization 7 has launched without a number of features they've come come to expect.

Firaxis has responded to this feedback, promising improvements to the UI, the addition of teams to multiplayer games so people can play co-operatively, and a wider variety of map types, among other things.

In an interview with IGN ahead of the release of third quarter financial results, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged that Civilization 7 had received some negative reviews from press and players, but insisted that the “legacy Civ audience” will come around the more they play, and called Civilization 7’s early performance “very encouraging.”

How to Redeem Dress to Impress Codes

Follow the steps below to redeem Dress to Impress codes and claim free rewards in DTI:

  1. Open the Dress to Impress Roblox Experience.
  2. Click on the handbag icon on the left-hand side to open the DTI Codes menu.
  3. Enter your code in the "Type here..." field.
  4. Check for any spelling mistakes or errors.
  5. Click the checkmark icon to redeem the code.

Why Isn't My Dress to Impress Code Working?

If the code you're trying to redeem in DTI isn't working, it's likely because of one of two reasons:

  • The Dress to Impress code is expired
  • There's a spelling mistake in the code

When inputting a DTI code in Roblox, make sure it's spelled correctly (for example, a capital I isn't a lowercase l, 0 and not O, and vice versa) and that there are no spaces before or after the code. We'd recommend copying and pasting codes straight from our article to ensure they're correct as we've tested and verified that the codes on this page are working ourselves.

If your DTI code still isn't working after checking for typos, it's more than likely expired and can no longer be redeemed in Dress to Impress.

How to Get More DTI Codes

To get more Dress to Impress codes, the best way is to join the official DTI Discord server. While we check for new codes daily, the quickest way to know about new Dress to Impress codes is to follow the Roblox experience's official Discord server where updates are posted in real time.

Are There Any Upcoming DTI Codes?

Currently, we don't know of any upcoming DTI codes now that the Winter Update is here. We'll update this once any information on new codes is shared.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer May Be Getting a Reboot, But Maybe That's Not a Good Thing

8 février 2025 à 14:00

Streaming Wars is a weekly opinion column by IGN’s Streaming Editor, Amelia Emberwing. Check out the last entry This One Spider-Man Moment Is Key to Marvel TV’s Success.

Variety has reported that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in final talks to reprise her role as Buffy Summers in a Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival at Hulu. The team announced is currently all women, featuring Nora and Lila Zuckerman to write, showrun, and executive produce, with Chloe Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) tapped to direct the pilot and serve as an EP alongside the showrunners. Some former EPs will return as well, including Gail Berman, Fran and Kaz Kuzui, and the Dolly Parton. Notably absent is Joss Whedon, who was largely ousted from Hollywood after repeated allegations of his toxic work environment and mistreatment of his actors. But just because he isn’t involved in the property doesn’t mean he won’t see financial gain from the revival.

Every generation may have a chosen one, and this generation hasn’t gotten their dose of slayer goodness yet but I don’t know, y’all. There’s a lot to process here, and I’m worried on several different fronts about Buffy’s return.

Broadly speaking, I am a huge proponent of reboots, remakes, and legacy sequels. I enjoy new spins on stuff that I love. Sometimes they’re successful, sometimes they’re downright awful, but I will always, always give them a shot. Typically with enthusiasm, even! I am not enthusiastic about this Buffy news. I am, at best, trepidatious and, at worst, completely apathetic. I have been waffling between the two since Variety broke the news of the slayer’s potential return.

Obviously, part of that trepidation is the Whedon of it all. Though he may not be creatively involved in the show, he remains the creator of the character. Will he see royalties from the revival, or did he sell the rights entirely? These aren’t questions we have answers to yet, but it remains at the forefront of my mind as we look at the possibility of future slayer outings.

This line of thinking, of course, brings up the longstanding debate of whether or not we should separate art from the artist. From my perspective, I am happy to separate art from the artist on already existing works that were experienced or purchased prior to whatever buffoonery was pulled. My Buffy, Angel and Firefly box sets still sit happily on my shelves. However, separating art from the artist does not mean that we are ethically free to continue to line bad people’s pockets via ticket sales, streaming, or additional purchases. Each person decides where their line is personally, but Joss Whedon will not be getting any more of my money.

The thing is, though, this isn’t where my concerns for a Buffy reboot end. When I found out about the news, my first response was “I don’t have the emotional fortitude for this,” and I didn’t mean it in a fun, fangirl-y kind of way. I am a firm believer in the power of fandom and how it can be used for good. However, it’s not news to anyone that that very power has been used for ill as much as it’s been used for good over recent years. I really don’t know if seeing Buffy Summers back on the small screen is worth dealing with armies of entitled people mad over nothing (read: Whedon’s lack of involvement, a female creative team, stories centering on women, updating the slayer’s story to fit into the current time period, etc.) and making it everyone else’s problem. Sure, it very well could be if the new series is great. But will it be?

This isn’t a lack of faith in the creators. The Zuckerman’s have done admirable work in their tenure ala Poker Face, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and even Suits, and Chloe Zhao has an entire Oscar. Zhao is, admittedly, a weird choice to direct the pilot given her proclivity for longing landscape shots, but hey, I trust her!

I also have a lack of faith in whether or not there’s a story to be told here after the original series petered out. Are we really going to have to spend another indeterminate amount of seasons dealing with failed Spike redemption arcs? Will enough of the ensemble (not you, Nicholas Brendon, Xander died on the way back to his home planet) return to re-spark the magic? Will fans engage with a story where Buffy Summers is basically the new Giles? What more does the Slayer really have to say? It’s too early to have answers to any of these questions. But, at the end of the day, I’m pretty sure the response to news of a much-beloved character’s return should be excitement rather than a simple “I’m tired.”

But, while tired, I do, at least, hope to be proven wrong.

It has premium features such as anti-glare coating, G-Sync compatibility, HDMI 2.1, and DisplayPort 1.4. At £1,298.99 (down from £1,499.00), it's still pricey, but this is one of the best deals for a high-end 4K OLED gaming monitor.

Aside from buttery-smooth performance, Samsung packed this display with features like AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, built-in speakers, and a complete smart platform with gaming hub support. It's a premium pick, but at £1,199.00 (down from £1,599.99), it's a serious bargain for high-end enthusiasts who want top-tier visuals and performance in one package.

Samsung Odyssey G4 LS25BG400EUXXU

At just £149.00 (down from £249.99), this 240Hz, 1ms IPS panel delivers incredibly smooth performance for competitive gaming. Its NVIDIA G-Sync compatibility ensures a tear-free experience, and the Full HD resolution keeps everything looking sharp without requiring a beastly GPU.

It also comes with an ergonomic stand that allows for height adjustment, tilt, and swivel, making it a great choice for esports players looking for an optimized setup. At 40% off, this is an unbeatable deal for a high-refresh-rate gaming monitor, perfect for fast-paced games like CS: GO, Valorant, or Call of Duty.

AOC Gaming Q27G4XD

AOC Q27G4XD is one of the best-value 1440p gaming monitors available, now available for £189.00 (down from £249.00). This 27-inch Fast IPS panel boasts a 180Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time, it's perfect for gamers who want high-speed performance without sacrificing image quality. Adaptive Sync smoothes out gameplay, with HDR400 looking after brightness and contrast for a better visual experience.

It's height-adjustable stand is a suprising rarity with gaming monitor, making it a comfortable choice for pretty much anyone. Looking for a mid-range monitor with great specs at a reasonable price? QHD resolution, high refresh rate, and a solid discount is a win in my book.

Save $575 Off the Powerful Alienware m16 RTX 4070 Gaming Laptop at Best Buy

8 février 2025 à 03:30

Best Buy is offering a great deal on a well equipped Alienware laptop. For Friday and Saturday only, you can get the Alienware m16 R2 RTX 4070 gaming laptop for just $1,374.99 shipped. That's $500 less than buying it directly from Dell. The m16 R2 is Alienware's most popular gaming laptop, which isn't surprising considering its excellent build quality, top-of-the-line gaming prowess, and reasonable price point. The "R2" is the second generation model that was released in 2024; it's 14% lighter and more compact than its predecessor without compromising on performance.

Alienware m16 R2 16" Gaming Laptop

This laptop features a 16" 2560x1600 QHD+ display, Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor, GeForce RTX 4070 GPU, 16GB of DDR5-5600MHz RAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD. The Intel Core Ultra 7 155H is a power efficient, low voltage Meteor Lake CPU with a max turbo frequency of 4.8GHz and 16 total cores. Although Best Buy does have a Core Ultra 9 model for $300 more, gamers will find little reason to upgrade to it since most games are limited by the GPU, not the CPU.

You absolutely will, however, need a decent amount of GPU power to be able to run games smoothly on the display's bumped-up 2560x1600 resolution. Alienware never throttles the GPU on its m16 laptops, and that includes the RTX 4070 found in this laptop, which boasts a 115W (140W with Dynamic Boost) TGP. The 4070 is powerful enough to comfortabley run most games at 60fps or higher on the 1600p display, moreso if the game supports DLSS 3.0.

Best Buy is an authorized Dell retailer, so you'll be getting the same 1 year warranty as buying from Dell direct. This laptop is also currently in stock and will be delivered to you within a week.

Insomniac Games Pitched Resistance 4, But Never Got It Approved

8 février 2025 à 01:55

There was apparently a real push to get Resistance 4 made by the folks at Insomniac Games, but unfortunately the game never received the green light.

Insomniac Games founder and outgoing president Ted Price is sitting down for interviews now that it’s been announced he’s retiring after 30 years at the helm of the studio. He most recently hung out with Kinda Funny Games for a chat and was asked if there was a favorite game of his that was pitched but never made, to which he gave his answer.

“Yeah, I’ll share one. Resistance 4.”

According to Price, he and the developers “did pitch that one and it was a wonderful concept, and it just in terms of timing and market opportunity, didn’t work out.” He added that the Insomniac team were “passionate about extending the story further because I do believe that Resistance has set up a really cool alternate history base where anything can happen with the Chimera and where they go and what their origins are.”

Resistance is a series of first-person shooters Insomniac developed following their work on the Ratchet and Clank games. Set in an alternate history where aliens invade the UK in 1951. There were three Resistance games made, all for the PlayStation 3 before Insomniac moved on to other projects like Marvel’s Spider-Man and new Ratchet and Clank games.

Price announced earlier this year that he will be retiring from Insomniac Games after over 30 years at the company. He has named Chad Dezern, Ryan Schneider, and Jen Huang as Co-Studio Heads who will succeed him.

Insomniac Games’ most recent title was Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 which just received a PC release, and their next game is set to be Marvel’s Wolverine.

Yes, PSN Is Down

8 février 2025 à 01:11

This is a helpful PSA from us to let you know that PSN is currently down. In fact, PSN has been down for over 12 hours now without an update as to when this will be resolved.

According to Downdetector, PSN has been suffering from an outage since at least 3pm PST/6pm EST. The PlayStation Network Service page also shows that all services, from sign-in to gaming to the PlayStation Store are all down.

In a tweet, Sony said it was "aware some users might be currently experiencing issues with PSN." Sony has not made an additional update to this post.

It's unclear when services will resume for PSN, but the outage means that this weekend begins without access to some of your favorite games including Marvel Rivals, Call of Duty, Fortnite, and more.

The situation was bad enough that publishers warned their players about the downtime. NetEase Games, the company behind Marvel Rivals, told its community via Discord that "due to PlayStation server’s emergent issue today," users might have difficulty launching games, apps, or network features. "We are actively communicating with the PlayStation team and will restore the game once we receive a solution plan from the PlayStation team," NetEase continued.

"We apologize for any inconvenience and will notify the community through official channels once the issue is fixed. Thank you for your patience and understanding."

Meanwhile, EA was forced to extend FC 25's Ultimate Team Champs Finals, its most hardcore competitive multiplayer event. Once entered, players make time during the weekend to grind through the required number of matches as they battle for Ultimate Team's best rewards. If they haven’t completed all of their matches before the weekend event ends, they'll only get the rewards for what they've earned.

We'll have an update for when services resume. In the meantime, no other platforms are reporting outages so it appears specific to PSN.

Synduality Echo of Ada Review

8 février 2025 à 00:40

The first time I lost my mech in Synduality Echo of Ada was on my second sortie, and a lot of things went wrong. I didn’t buy insurance beforehand and I took way too much stuff out with me because I hit the wrong button, and then I chose not to take a moment to repair right before I got into the encounter that killed me. I made a series of avoidable mistakes followed by a bad decision, and this mech-flavored extraction shooter made sure I lost everything I had for it – so it’s a good sign that, after I was done cursing Synduality and then myself, I was immediately excited to try and get it all back. Satisfying combat means going out on a sortie is always tense, but its slow start can really bog down an otherwise great run, and I wouldn’t blame anyone for dipping out before they see the good stuff.

There’s a pretty cool premise: In the far future, humanity has been nearly wiped out by a mysterious blue rain which, in addition to killing humans on contact, makes animals and plants gigantic and aggressive. To survive, society has moved underground and adopted the use of enormous mechs called Cradlecoffins to explore the surface world and gather energy-producing crystals. Your goal: Get up there, get the things you need to upgrade your base and make some cash, and get out before the locals turn your Cradlecoffin into a… gravecoffin?

Cradlecoffins aren’t your traditional mechs. They’re slower than something you’d find in Armored Core – though similarly armed – but faster than the behemoths you’d see in MechWarrior. Ready for a deep cut? They’re actually a lot like the mechs from 2002’s Phantom Crash, which is to say they are a nice balance of being reasonably fast but still heavy and limited in terms of, shall we say, vertical mobility. Armored Core mechs can dunk like Jordan; Cradlecoffins got no ups.

But you’re not out there alone. In addition to your mech, you’ve got a Magus — think a humanoid AI you can fully customize and play dress-up with — helping to guide you when you’re out on the surface by marking objectives on your map, alerting you to threats, and even keeping track of the weather. You can be as normal or as strangely intimate as you want about the creation process (you can bathe them, which is… weird), though it kinda seems as if Synduality assumes you’re more likely to pick a robo-girlfriend than a robo-boyfriend based on the clothing choices available. (Even the AI-controlled Cradelcoffins largely have robo-girlfriends.) There are several different personalities to choose from, including supportive mentor lady; demure, eager-to-please girl; encouraging big brother; and spicy athlete who just wants you to be the best version of yourself. They’re an oddly likeable little crew — I chuckled when my robo-girlfriend essentially told me to stop whining and eat my veggies (read: weeds that we had removed from the base) or she’d beat me up. And since they’re the only companion you’ll have for most of your time with Synduality, their presence is welcome.

Most of the other players I've seen aren’t out there to kill you.

In addition to their clothes and look, you can also customize the special abilities and focus of your Magus, whether that’s finding crystals, providing more info about different hostile creatures (called Enders), or giving you the lowdown on the other Cradlecoffins you’ll run into once you pop out on the surface. I liked both the option that’s good at protecting me from the evil rain and the one who has a knack for spotting other Cradlecoffins at range because hearing another potentially hostile player’s engine in this game is stressful, but I appreciate that you can tailor your Maguses (Magi?) to assist you be the best pilot (AKA Drifter) you wanna be.

You’ll run into other players in Synduality’s world, but in my experience, most of them aren’t out there to kill you and take your things. Usually, an encounter means the two of you being very cagey, aiming your guns at each other, until one of you finally uses the wave emote. Then the other returns it and you both go on your way, always facing each other as you retreat like you’re a gunslinger staring down somebody you’re unsure of, because the back of your Cradlecoffin is its most vulnerable point. It’s admittedly tense, as an extraction shooter like this should be, because you’re never more than a single uninsured run away from losing all your things.

The whole “we’re all working together to help humanity” thing sets up that cautious camaraderie, but there is always the danger that someone’s gonna see your shiny shotgun and think “I want that and I don’t wanna work for it.” I’ve exchanged some gunfire with other pilots, but it’s pretty rare early on. It’s very funny when three Craddlecoffins share one of the elevators that bring you to and from the safety of the underground, and very relieving when you’re about to put a sniper round through the back of someone’s Cradle but then notice that they are running with two buddies and your patience probably saved your life.

Of course, another time I saw somebody take a bad fight against some Enders with their back to me while I was above them with a sniper rifle, and… well, I hope they were insured. That was exhilarating and tense and, one day, somebody’s going to nail me and I won’t blame them. What’s that old Hemingway quote? “There is no hunting like the hunting of mechs, and those who have hunted armed mechs long enough and liked it, never care for anything else thereafter.” Yeah. Yeah. Admittedly, taking a golden opportunity like this will put you on the Drifter Support Association’s naughty list for a while (and doing it enough will make you a bounty target for other players), but if you go long enough without taking a shot at somebody when you’re only on probation you’ll be fine.

One day, somebody’s going to nail me and I won’t blame them.

Managing each mission means making a lot of interesting choices. How far from the elevators are you willing to venture? What kind of materials are you looking to collect for your base, and how much are you going to risk to get them? How much ammo will you head out with? What kind of mech? Will you prioritize carrying capacity or defense? All of these choices matter, and you may regret your words and deeds when you’re sitting at low health with no repair kits, far away from an elevator in a world where everything wants to kill you. Knowing what you want to accomplish on a given run, and choosing the right tools to do it, is key.

The stuff you bring back to base can be used to spruce it up, which is good because it starts off as a literal cave covered in weeds. That could mean something simple like adding floors to your living space, upgrading your Item Warehouse so you can store more stuff, or building a Production Space to create your own repair kits. Every little upgrade you manage feels meaningful, and it’s cool to watch your base go from an empty shell to something functional with a lot of different systems to make your life easier.

But this also brings me to Synduality’s biggest problem: the grind. There’s just not a lot of variety here, and the first dozen or so hours have you doing the same thing over and over again: you’ll go out on the same map, head to the same areas to find the upgrade supplies you’ve wishlisted so your Magus can track them, fight the same Enders, deal with the everpresent threat of violence from other players, and then head back to base and do it all again. That’s fine; this loop remains tense, and while fighting Enders loses its appeal after a while because you learn how to deal with them quickly and then just repeat those strategies, the threat of losing all your stuff carries the day.

Again, though, the issue is how long it takes to make real progress. Getting enough of the supplies you need for any given upgrade or to complete a Request (quests that send you to do something specific on the map, like collecting so many of X thing, killing so many of Y Ender, and so on) takes several runs, and a lot of progress early on is hidden behind unlocking the right stuff. Once you do, things really open up, but those early hours can drag.

Even when you do finally get enough materials, you often have to wait for an arbitrary, real-world time gate before your next upgrade goes through, which means you’re stuck either vibing in your base with your Magus in admittedly pretty enjoyable chatting sequences, taking a break to go do something else (like make a sandwich), filling that time with sorties to stockpile resources, or ponying up some currency (either in-game or real-money) to make it go faster.

This brings me to Synduality’s biggest problem: the grind.

That said, you’re only ever one run away from something really cool. Once, I had two back-to-back deaths to Enders; the first time I was repairing and a flying Gazer swooped in and ended me before I could react; the second, I got jumped by a group of Chasers. I was insured, thankfully, but insurance takes a while to pay out, and it doesn’t actually replace what you lost – it just reimburses the total cost of those items. I was… upset, to put it lightly. Some of the lost stuff I’d gotten from progressing through Synduality’s battle pass, which meant I didn’t actually have the means to replace it manually yet.

But on my very next run, where I was forced to play small ball with a basic mech that costs nothing to replace, I ran into someone else’s destroyed mech and took everything I could, which got me some parts I’d lost on my very first death and stuff I could use while I waited for my insurance payout. The luck I had early on had mostly been bad, but that was the moment things changed – including my view on Synduality overall, which had been more mixed until that moment. Once you get into the groove it’s a lot of fun, and you can really drill down on what you want to focus on each run, whether that’s finding supplies to upgrade your base, completing requests, or whatever else.

And you never know when you might find something cool. Once, I ran into two downed Craddlecoffins full of loot and grabbed as much as I could, then booked it immediately back to the elevator. Christmas came early. It’s just a shame it takes so long to get to that point – though, to Synduality’s credit, it does try to ease you in and is more friendly to new players than many extraction shooters because of the insurance system and the way it flags people who’ve been hostile to other players. I just wish it opened up for you faster after that introduction.

Synduality does, eventually, give you more to do. You’ll unlock another map with new environments, harder Enders, and more difficult objectives, but that also means more experienced players with better stuff, some of whom will be helpful and some… not. There are also single-player missions which play out like combat gauntlets, and I really enjoyed the ones I played. They’re a great way to learn to deal with other Cradlecoffins in particular. Unfortunately, they don’t give you anything you can carry back with you besides some video and audio logs that explain the lore. These missions are fun, but right now they feel disconnected from the main activity of hunting for resources, and that’s a shame; I just wish completing them gave you money or plans to build some of the mechs you use, or something.

Beyond those there are co-op missions you can do, but since there’s unfortunately no way to squad up with your friends before you head out onto a map you have to team up with players you run into. Joining up with them gives you a new co-op objective — the first one I did asked us to destroy a corrupted crystal protected by lots and lots of Enders who spawned in to give us trouble. The thing with these missions is you’re only squaded up for as long as that objective lasts, so once that crystal was history, our alliance was broken. Neither of us ended up shooting at each other, but we were both pretty wary as we backed away. Like everything else in Synduality, there’s a lot of risk/reward to co-op missions, but you also get a lot of good stuff if you get home alive.

Then there are the microtransactions and battle pass (we live in Hell!) that can speed up the process of getting a better Cradlecoffin (or goodies for your Magus) substantially, which chafes because this is not a free-to-play game. When I lost everything in that first run, I was able to get back on my feet pretty quickly because the code provided by Bandai Namco for this review unexpectedly came with the deluxe version of the battle pass and several level skips. If I hadn’t had that, progress would have been slow outside of regularly completing daily and weekly quests, which award a ton of experience – though at least you’re always making progress towards one and they rarely feel stuck.

Because of that, Synduality feels like it’s made to be played in chunks – but to its credit, the battle pass gives you a decent amount of stuff for free… assuming you don’t then immediately lose all of that stuff to another player. Whether it’s in-game currency or real money, you’ll have to pony up for everything, but Synduality is at least upfront about that, and it does feel like you can make progress at a reasonable pace even if you don’t open your wallet to buy the deluxe version.

The Best Streaming Services With Free Trials in 2025

7 février 2025 à 19:20

In today’s world of seemingly endless streaming platforms and bundles, shopping for the right one(s) can be a trying ordeal. Since so many have their own expansive media libraries, it can be hard to commit to a monthly payment for one or multiple options. Do you want access to every Transformers movie before watching Transformers One? Paramount+ would be a good option. How about all the anime your heart desires? You’ll want to try out Crunchyroll to satisfy that craving. Luckily, most streaming services these days offer a sneak peek via free trials into their cache of goodies. So whatever you’re looking to watch in 2025, these nine free trials are a great way to test the waters of the streaming landscape.

1. Hulu (30-Day Free Trial)

The mecca of popular series both original and classic, Hulu has almost everything a series-binger would need. Adding to its impressive library over the years with some quality, sought-after films as well as TV shows, Hulu also has a wealth of groundbreaking, interesting, original content to dive into. After exploring every nook and cranny that Hulu has to offer in this generous 30-day trial, there are a wide range of subscription options to opt into, from $9.99 a month (with ads) all the way up to just over $100 a month – if you want to include live TV or premium add-ons such as Max, ESPN+, Disney+, Cinemax, Paramount+ with Showtime, Starz, and more. However, the Hulu + Live TV free trial only lasts for three days compared to the 30-day free trial of the standalone streaming service.

It's worth noting that Disney now offers a bundle that combines Hulu, Disney+, and Max into a single streaming package. While that bundle does not have a free trial, it is arguably the best streaming deal available.

Read our review of Hulu or check out all of the Hulu bundles available.

2. Paramount+ (7-Day Free Trial)

Much like Hulu, Paramount+ has dug deep into the nostalgia bin while also offering a breadth of modern shows and movies to choose from. Paramount+ offers exclusive access to media such as the Transformers movies, the Halo series, and the entire Star Trek film/series universe. With new shows and movies added every week along with some well-made originals of its own, Paramount+ is quickly becoming a contender with the big names in streaming. After the seven-day free trial of its services, the recurring monthly amount to stay subscribed will be as low as $7.99 (or $59.99 a year) with limited ads, or $12.99 a month (or $119.99 a year) to add Showtime’s full library and remove almost all ads. You can also get access to Parmount+ via a Walmart+ membership if you're hoping to avoid a free trial all together.

If you're looking to watch the new Knuckles TV series or are wating for Sonic 3 to become available to stream, Paramount+ is the destination for that franchise..

3. Apple TV+ (7-Day Free Trial)

An up-and-coming streaming service in the streaming wars, Apple TV+ takes exclusivity to a whole new level. Featuring some highly praised original shows (Ted Lasso, Severance, Shrinking, The Morning Show, Masters of the Air) and movies (Killers of the Flower Moon, Spirited, Napoleon), Apple is quickly gaining momentum in the race against its competitors. After the seven-day free trial has expired, the monthly subscription will cost $9.99 at base cost, depending on how many users are added to the account. As a disclaimer for those without Apple products, you will have to create a verified Apple ID to access the premium Apple TV+ streaming library. With season 2 of Severance and season 4 of Mythic Quest happening right now, this is a great service to try out.

4. Crunchyroll (7-Day Free Trial)

For viewers looking to expand their Anime horizons and join in on the millions of viewers worldwide, Crunchyroll has an offer that is hard to beat. While there are three different membership tiers to choose from ($7.99/mo to $14.99/mo), Crunchyroll also has a decent amount of anime content streaming for free. With the various membership packages available, subscribers can also gain access to Crunchyroll games as well as discounts at the Crunchyroll online store. Any fan of anime knows that Japan is the leader in anime production, which is why Crunchyroll gives users premium access to brand-new episodes shortly after its initial release in Japan. It's arguably the best place to watch anime online in 2025.

5. fuboTV (7-Day Free Trial)

Another streaming service targeted on live TV streams with a focus on sports, fuboTV is the leading streaming service for sports fans across the globe. While it may be most popular for streaming sporting events, fuboTV has subscription packages that offer up to 10 screens, 1,000 hours of Cloud DVR space, 4k streaming quality, up to 448 TV channels, and even a premium Showtime add-on option. Besides these features, there is also a catalog of popular shows and movies available for on-demand streaming. Once the seven-day trial has expired, subscribers will pay as low as $59.99 for the first month, then $79.99 for the remainder of the membership. If you're looking for a way to watch the Super Bowl online this year, this is a good service to test out over the weekend.

Disney recently struck a deal to combine its service with fuboTV, so while you can still access the free trial now, it may eventually become merged with other Disney properties down the line.

6. DirecTV Stream (5-Day Free Trial)

Although many may remember DirecTV only as a satellite TV service, the company also offers a pretty solid streaming service. DirecTV Stream has an array of streaming options that include various movies, series, and live TV access. Though the trial may be a short one at five days, DirecTV sweetens the deal with some premium content offered upon subscription. When customers sign up for one of three packages ranging in content and priced from $79.99 a month to $119.99 a month, it includes Max, Paramount+ with Showtime, Starz, MGM+, and Cinemax in the first three months of the subscription.

It's worth noting that DirecTV was able to reach an agreement with Disney over various channels. Because of this DirecTV subscribers now has access to ESPN channels again in 2025.

7. Philo TV (7-Day Free Trial)

An additional option for those looking to stream premium TV channels from their living room, Philo TV offers similar options but for a bargain. While many consider this simply an alternative to cable TV (considering its 70+ channels for a much cheaper rate), it also has over 70,000 titles to stream on-demand even without utilizing the DVR capabilities. Set at a constant monthly rate that includes everything Philo has to offer, subscribers only pay $25 a month after their seven-day free trial to keep using one of the more underrated TV services the internet has to offer.

8. Mubi (7-Day Free Trial)

A streaming service catered to the arthouse/foreign film cinephiles, Mubi takes streaming subscriptions to a whole new level. Headlining with some of the more obscure and cerebral films to date, Mubi takes pride in its appreciation of the auteur and the directors who made it happen. Presented as a movie theater in a subscription, users can pick from 30 available films – every day one is added and one is removed. After the seven-day free trial, subscribers will be charged $14.99 a month to retain their membership. With the add-on of a fairly new premium feature called MubiGo, users (in select cities) have access to one movie theater ticket every week – a movie chosen by Mubi – and the Mubi library for $19.99 a month.

9. Amazon Prime (30-Day Free Trial)

As one of the biggest competitors in the streaming wars, Amazon Prime offers a surprisingly long trial of 30 days to decide if you enjoy what it has to offer. Responsible for the production of more high-quality films and series every year (including Rings of Power and the new Fallout series), it’s hard to look away from the Amazon Prime catalog. With access to exclusive content as well as a vast library of established films, much of the content is included with the membership but with an option to rent much newer releases. After the 30-day trial is concluded, users will be charged $14.99 a month (or $139 a year) to continue viewing and enjoy free shipping on orders from Amazon’s shopping center. There is also a student discount of $7.49 a month (or $69 a year).

What are the best free streaming services?

If you're looking for a streaming service that is permanently free, there are actually quite a few. One of the biggest names in free streeming is the Roku Channel, which offers tons of movies and shows without the need for a paid subscription. Tubi is also a great option for free movies, TV shows, and live TV channels. Alternatively, if you just want access to live TV directly from the air, you can buy a TV antenna and get access to local channels.

HP Slashes the Price of the Omen 35L RTX 4070 Super Gaming PC to Well Under $1,400

7 février 2025 à 22:20

As part of its Early President's Day Sale, HP is currently offering an Omen 35L RTX 4070 Super gaming PC for only $1,359.99 shipped after you apply a 20% off coupon code: "DUO20". That's an excellent price for a gaming PC that can run pretty much any game at 1080p or 1440p. In fact, the RTX 4070 Super is powerful enough to handle 4K gaming as well.

HP Omen 35L RTX 4070 Super Gaming PC for $1,360

This particular system is preconfigured with an Intel Core Ultra 5 245K CPU, GeForce RTX 4070 Super GPU, 16GB of DDR5-6000MHz RAM, and a 512GB SSD for $1,699.99. Apply code "DUO20" in your cart to get the $1,359.99 price.

The Intel Core Ultra 5 is the latest generation Intel Meteor Lake 14-core CPU with a max turbo frequency of 5.2GHz. This is a very capable processor that's a solid pick for both gaming and workstation tasks, is AI optimized thanks to a discrete NPU, and uses less power than previous generation CPUs. You have the option of upgrading to a Core Ultra 7 or even a 9, but you won't see much of an improvement in high resolution gaming, since performance is mostly GPU-bound.

The RTX 4070 Super video card is a significant improvement in performance over the 4070 (about 10-15% faster at 1440p). This is an outstanding GPU for gaming at 1080p and 1440p and you'll easily be able to get 60+fps in just about any game. With DLSS enabled, the 4070 Super is also a great affordable option for 4K gaming. The only reasons you would want to spend more would be (1) if you want to play the most demanding games in 4K with more intensive graphics settings like ray tracing, or (2) if you want to push very high framerates (240fps or more) at 1440p.

What's new about the Omen 35L?

The Omen 35L is HP's newest chassis, and it is redesigned to provide ample amounts of cooling in a smaller design. Most of the internal components are now off-the-shelf form factors that can be more easily swapped and upgraded on your own. The front panel contains two 140mm intake fans with sufficient ventilation, and a 120mm rear fan and top-mounted 240mm all-in-one liquid cooling system serves as the exhaust, while also siphoning heat away from the CPU.

The PDP Riffmaster Wireless Guitar Controller for PS5 Just Dropped to Its Lowest Ever Price

7 février 2025 à 21:44

Although I love playing my guitar whenever I get the chance, some of my favorite memories with a guitar are actually Rock Band memories. There's something so satisfying about holding a guitar controller and feeling like I'm actually playing songs that I would never dream of playing on a real guitar.

While my own Rock Band days ended a long time ago, the music goes on with the likes of Rock Band 4 and Fortnite Festival. And if you want to keep playing those games or get back into them, PDP released a new wireless guitar controller just last year that can help you do that. It's pretty expensive, but Amazon has just dropped the price to a new low with a 20% discount.

PDP Riffmaster Wireless Guitar Controller Sale

When this controller first came out back in May 2024, it sold out very quickly. This is largely because there just aren't really any new guitar controller options available outside of this one. The compatibility with Rock Band 4 and Fortnite Festival allow new and old players to experience an upgrade that feels more in line with modern controllers.

While it is normally priced at $129.99, the discount Amazon is running right now drops that down to $104. This is the lowest-ever price we've seen on Amazon for the PlayStation compatible version of this controller, and likely the lowest one we'll see until sales events later in the year.

While this is a fairly unique controller, it's the overall best PS5 controller you can buy if you're looking to play Rock Band 4 or Fortnite Festival on your PS5 or PS4. If you're interested in more PS5 accessories, however, we've gathered some below.

Save $50 Off the Meta Quest 3S VR Headset and Get a Bonus $50 Best Buy Gift Card

7 février 2025 à 19:10

If you've wanted to give VR gaming a try but the cost of entry has kept you at bay, then you might be interested in the first great Meta Quest deal for 2025. For a limited time, Best Buy is taking $50 off the Quest 3S 256GB VR headset, now only $349.99. But that's not all. You also get a bonus $50 Best Buy gift card and 1 month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. That essentially brings the price down to the same level as the base 128GB model.

To sweeten the pot even more, the package also includes a copy of Batman: Arkham Shadow VR game and a three-month trial of Meta Quest+. In IGN's 8/10 review, Dan Stapleton wrote that "Batman: Arkham Shadow makes most of the Arkham series' defining gameplay work respectably well in VR, and its mystery story pays off."

Meta Quest 3S VR Headset with Batman: Arkham Shadow

The Quest 3S is an improvement over the original Quest 2 in every way and, amazingly, without a price increase. It also adopts many of the same features of the more expensive Quest 3, like the new and improved Touch controllers, the upgraded SnapDragon APU, and support for full color AR passthrough. In IGN's 9/10 Quest 3S review, Gabriel Moss wrote that "raw processing power, full-color passthrough, and snappy Touch Plus controllers make the Quest 3S a fantastic standalone VR headset that also brings entry-level mixed-reality gaming to the masses for – arguably – the very first time.

What really sets this deal above all other VR deals is that the Meta Quest 3S can be played completely untethered. That means you can play games like Beat Saber or Pistol Whip without having to own a powerful gaming PC or a PlayStation 5 console. How Is the Quest 3S Different from the Quest 3?

Even at retail price, the Quest 3S comes in at $200, or 40% cheaper than the $500 Quest 3. Obviously, some compromises were made to get the 3S to its competitive price point. The spec comparisons are listed below:

Quest 3S vs. Quest 3 Similarities

  • Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor
  • Touch Plus controllers
  • 120Hz refresh rate
  • Mixed reality passthrough (same cameras, different layout)

Quest 3S vs. Quest 3 Differences

  • Lower per-eye resolution (1832x1920 vs 2064×2208)
  • Fresnel lens vs. pancake lens
  • Lower FOV (96°/90° vs 104°/96°)
  • Smaller storage capacity (128GB vs 512GB)
  • Longer battery life (2.5hrs vs 2.2hrs)

In essence, the Quest 3S is nearly the same headset but with downgraded optics. On the plus side, since both headsets use the same processor, running at a lower resolution reduces the load on the APU, which could theoretically improve performance in games and also account for the increased battery life.

For the price, the Quest 3S is unquestionably a better value than the Quest 3, and a better choice for most gamers, especially if the Quest 3 was completely out of your budget in the first place. Compared to the previous generation Quest 2, the decision is even easier.

Monster Hunter Wilds Beta Players Share Love — and Fear — for Its New Flagship Monster Arkveld

7 février 2025 à 18:54

The Monster Hunter Wilds beta is back, and it's got a few new fights in tow. Beta players are already grappling with its big challenge, a fearsome new foe called Arkveld, and its eliciting both excitement and dread.

Arkveld is the new flagship monster for Monster Hunter Wilds. This means the beast is the cover star for the game, and stands to play a significant role in the course of players' journeys through Wilds. As part of the new beta test, courageous hunters can try to tackle a hunt for the Chained Arkveld, with a 20-minute time limit and five "faint" limit.

As ambitious players are discovering, this new monster packs a punch. Arkveld is a massive winged beast, with electric chains stretching out from each of its arms. It can swing them around and make the air crackle with its thunderous attacks, and it's surprisingly fast, too.

Experienced hunters are still finding themselves sent back in a cart by its powerful moves. It's an impressive display of the new technology, as Arkveld uses its whips to move around, throw out long-reaching attacks, and generally be a menace. One attack in particular has Monster Hunter players in the beta thunderstruck, as it grabs the hunter and roars at them before slamming them down.

Arkveld is even causing some mild unexpected havoc. I really enjoyed this video one player on the r/MHWilds subreddit captured, of Arkveld interrupting their meal. The wilds are no place to go for lunch, it seems.

It's a visually impressive fight and an incredibly dangerous monster. While the difficulty might be worrisome for some, the Monster Hunter faithful seem spurred on by it. Taking down big, dangerous monsters is the name of the game after all, and seeing Wilds' flagship monster be so fearsome and iconic in equal measure is a reaffirming notion. Additionally, the "Chained" note — plus Arkveld's flagship status — has some players considering whether there could be an even more terrifying "Unchained" version down the line.

The Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta Test 2 runs February 6 through 9, and then returns February 13 through 16. Both Arkveld and returning monster Gypceros are available to hunt, and there are some other added features, like a Training Area and Private Lobbies.

Monster Hunter Wilds will be out on February 28, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. You can read more about Capcom's latest hunting expedition in our IGN First coverage, including our Monster Hunter Wilds Final Preview here.

Check out our guide to the Monster Hunter Wilds Beta, including info on how to play multiplayer with friends, all the Monster Hunter Wilds weapon types, and the confirmed monsters you could encounter.

Pokémon TCG Pocket Trading Has Spurred a Strange Black Market for High Rarity Cards

7 février 2025 à 17:58

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket has a strange black market where players are buying and selling the digital cards online via its controversial trading mechanic.

Myriad listings for Pokémon TCG Pocket cards have appeared on eBay, with players charging $5 to $10 per card. This is only possible through the game's recently introduced trading mechanic, as these sellers are simply asking to exchange friend codes with the buyers and then sending a card over.

One $5.99 listing for a Starmie ex, for example, asks buyers to ensure they have 500 Trade Tokens, one Trade Stamina, and most importantly, an "unwanted Pokémon ex" to exchange for the card they actually want.

This is where things get a bit strange. While it's already a blatant breach of the Pokémon TCG Pocket terms of service — as "buying or selling virtual contents or data on the service" is not allowed — the seller in these situations essentially loses nothing.

The buyer gives up a card they don't need for a card they do, which is a regular trade beyond the price tag, but the buyer doesn't lose stock. Per the restrictions on trading, only cards of the same rarity can be traded, meaning the seller gains an ex Pokémon when they sell one and can therefore just sell it again.

Myriad listings for ex Pokémon and 1 Star, alternate art cards, the two rarest available to trade, are listed on eBay, each with varying price tags. Entire accounts are on sale too, offering the likes of Pack Hourglasses and rare cards within them, though this is a fairly common for online games, breach of service or not.

Trading in Pokémon TCG Pocket proved controversial upon its release last week, though this trading online isn't directly related to the complaints.

Alongside the standard mechanic that restricts players from opening packs or Wonder Picking or, now, trading too much without spending real world money, the feature was also introduced with an extra restriction called Trade Tokens. Players criticized the high cost of obtaining these, as they essentially had to delete from their collections five cards before trading one of the same rarity.

This black market would have spawned even if trading had been released with absolutely no restrictions, however. The only relation to what players have complained about so far is in how bare bones the mechanic is, as there is no way to trade without being friends with another player.

This is because some players, like siraquakip on Reddit, were hoping for "a pretty safe way for the community to connect more." Players have called for the ability to put cards up for trade publicly within the app, alleviating the need for using external websites like Reddit and Discord, and now eBay, to find the cards they need.

Developer Creatures Inc. has already warned players against buying and selling cards using real world money and other methods of cheating, telling players before trading launched that "if we confirm that a player has engaged in behavior that violates the Terms of Use, we will warn them, suspend their account, or take other action."

The irony is that Creatures Inc. deployed the hated Trade Tokens mechanic in order to stop exploiting the system in ways exactly like these eBay sellers are doing. It's therefore clearly not worked, but has turned much of the community against the developer.

It's currently "actively investigating ways to improve" the trading feature but hasn't released any specifics on how it will do so despite complaints starting three weeks ago when it first unveiled the feature.

Fans have claimed trading is being implemented as a means of increasing revenue for Pokémon TCG Pocket, which is estimated to have made half a billion dollars in less than three months, before trading was possible.

This is also evidenced by the inability to trade cards of 2 Star rarity or higher, as if players could immediately trade for their missing cards, they wouldn't need to spend $10 or $100 or more for a random chance of getting them. It cost one player around $1,500 just to complete the first set, for example, and the third in three months arrived last week.

World of Warcraft Takes a Jab at Final Fantasy 14 With Its Housing Plans

7 février 2025 à 17:35

Player housing is coming to World of Warcraft, and Blizzard has unveiled its first look at how the MMO will handle it. In a new preview, the WoW team walked through early details, and even threw a quick jab at Final Fantasy XIV's housing in the process.

World of Warcraft is adding a sought-after housing feature in its upcoming expansion, World of Warcraft: Midnight. Amid its pillars and goals for housing in the recent dev blog, Blizzard listed "A Home for Everyone" as one of its targets.

"As a part of our focus on wide adoption, we wanted to ensure that Housing is available to everyone. If you want a house, you can have a house," Blizzard said. "No exorbitant requirements or high purchase costs, no lotteries, and no onerous upkeep (and if your subscription lapses, don’t worry, your house doesn’t get repossessed!)."

Player housing is, in essence, what it sounds like: physical homes players can buy in these MMO worlds, with plenty of room for personalization and decoration, that other players can visit. It's a very popular facet of Final Fantasy XIV where housing feeds player ingenuity, resulting in theater productions, nightclubs, cafes, and museums.

Of course, Final Fantasy XIV also has some rather infamous housing woes. There are a limited number of plots per server, you have to pay high amounts of Gil and enter a lottery, and then risk your house being demolished if left alone too long.

World of Warcraft's aim seems to be countering some concerns players might have about housing, based on Final Fantasy XIV's situation. Housing is even shared among the Warband, so characters can come and go, and rewards are also shared across characters and factional lines. While a Human character can't buy a house in the Horde zone, a Troll character in your Warband can, and then the Human character can use it.

Additionally, while World of Warcraft's housing will be split into just two housing zones and "Neighborhoods" of roughly 50 plots apiece, they are instanced and have both Public and Private options. The former is maintained by game servers and created "as needed," so there's no clear limit yet on Neighborhoods.

Blizzard seems to be in it for the long haul with World of Warcraft housing. In its stated pillars, alongside "boundless self-expression" and "deeply social," the team said it wants housing to be a "long lasting journey" with its own roadmap, and updates stretching out into future patches and expansions. It certainly feels like a commitment, and though it took a jab at XIV's systems, it also shows Blizzard is aware of the pitfalls.

There are still more details to iron out between now and the expected summer unveiling of World of Warcraft: Midnight.

Hasbro Reveals Liokaiser Combiner Figure Based on Transformers: Victory

7 février 2025 à 17:05

Old-school Transformers fans with a fondness for the Japanese G1 spinoff Transformers: Victory will be stoked to see Hasbro's latest Transformers figure reveal. The company is producing a massive Liokaiser Combiner figure, featuring no fewer than six Decepticon figures that combine to form one truly massive toy.

IGN can exclusively debut the first images of the Transformers Legacy: HasLab Liokaiser Combiner figure. Get a closer look in the slideshow gallery below:

This set consists of six individual Chest-force Decepticon figures - Leozak, Gaihawk, Ellbat, Jaruga, Killbison, and Drillhorn. Each figure is part of the Voyager Class scale and measures about 5.5 inches tall. Each also includes a removable Chest Animal accessory that converts into a weapon. Together, the six figures merge to form Liokaiser, which measures 14 inches tall.

The Liokaiser set is produced in conjunction with TOMY and is being crowdfunded through Hasbro's HasLab program. It's a follow-up to previous Transformers: Victory-inspired figures Star Saber and Deathsaurus (both of which are sold out and no longer available, unfortunately). The Liokaiser figure is priced at $299.99, with the campaign running from February 7 at 8:59pm PT to March 24. If successfully funded, the preorders are expected to ship beginning in Fall 2026.

The HasLab campaign has a minimum of 10,000 backers in order to be successfully funded. But as with past campaigns, there are several stretch goals that unlock at higher thresholds. At 13,000 backers, Hasbro will include a seventh Deathcobra figure. At 16,000 backers, they'll include an electromagnetic nunchaku accessory. At 18,000 backers, they'll include a set of three display bases that can be used to recreate the opening shot from the anime and also combine to form a support structure for Liokaiser.

Will you be backing the Liokaiser campaign? Let us know in the comments.

Apple Cider Vinegar Review

7 février 2025 à 16:37

There are few stories more demoralizing than that of Belle Gibson, the lifestyle influencer at the center of Apple Cider Vinegar. In the 2010s, Gibson built her brand by faking cancer and used the resulting clout to encourage actual cancer patients to spurn conventional, evidence-based medical treatment in favor of “clean” eating and a handful of other inadvisable, pseudoscientific (and potentially lethal) alternative therapies. If just reading that sentence blackened your soul a little, I suggest you stay far, far away from Netflix’s latest scammer drama, a six-episode spectacle that fictionalizes – and gleefully, cynically emulates – Gibson’s many deceptions. Though there are other reasons to skip it as well.

After a montage of Gibson’s fantastical claims centered on the major whopper that she cured terminal brain cancer with a healthy diet, the series opens in an L.A. publicist’s office. Belle, played by Kaitlyn Dever, is there to beg one of Hollywood’s best fixers to perform emergency surgery on her reputation. Before launching into her sob-story, she looks at the camera and announces, “This is a true story based on a lie.” That’s at least an accurate way to set the tone for this exhausting exercise in hatred and hypocrisy. Apple Cider Vinegar manages to both relentlessly scorn Gibson, rendering her inhuman, and shill her lies with panache. And the spectacle begins early: Within the first five minutes, Dever and her co-stars Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Alycia Debnam-Carey, and Aisha Dee do a choreographed dance to Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” The six hours that follow offer a heavily fictionalized version of the Belle Gibson story. It’s ostensibly based on Nick Toscano and Beau Donelly’s exposé The Woman Who Fooled the World, but creator Samantha Strauss has set up a show that delights in obfuscation as much as its main character.

Apple Cider Vinegar doesn’t shed light on Gibson’s myriad bizarre deceptions; it uses them as a storytelling framework. The show is intentionally disorienting as it jumps around in time, pulling details of Gibson’s life from journalistic recountings as often as it pulls them from thin air. Watching it will only further confuse you about Gibson’s age (at present, 33) and her experiences with fraudulent cancer “doctors” (unproven), both topics about which she has been famously inconsistent. Further muddying the waters are unverified backstory details such as Belle running away to live with a grown man at age 12 and suffering a miscarriage. The final episode even forgoes ending title cards that might tell viewers what happened next – like the fact that Gibson is still dodging a six-figure fine incurred from her crimes. Instead, Dever-as-Gibson simply reappears on screen and instructs viewers to “google it.”

There are some merits to this telling of the story. Unlike Belle – who’s rendered cartoonishly despicable in spite of Dever’s savvy acting and impressive mastery of an Australian accent – the secondary characters offer much-needed emotional depth. Debnam-Carey and Cobham-Hervey bring gravity to the proceedings as Milla, a woo-woo cancer influencer whose dismissal of mainstream medicine costs her dearly, and Lucy, an admirer of Belle’s who is actively battling breast cancer. If only their arcs, which reckon with mortality, powerlessness, and the very vulnerable mindset that Gibson so infamously exploited, were given as much screen time as Belle’s narcissistic meltdowns.

“Stories were meant to connect us, but our compulsion to narrativize and dramatize heroes’ journeys, goodies, baddies – we’ve become incapable of objective thought,” Belle’s fixer, Hek (Phoenix Raei), explains to camera at the beginning of one episode, mid-coke binge. Such feeble attempts at self-awareness bring to mind Gibson’s halting admissions of guilt during her infamous 60 Minutes Australia interview. Yes, she lied about having cancer, but it’s not her fault. Yes, Netflix has answered Gibson’s soulless actions with even further cynicism, but that’s just because there’s a problem with society.

Pass. That’s precisely the kind of intellectual dishonesty and sensationalism that allows influencers like Gibson to flourish. Producers can cast the best actors possible for this project and insert as many winking lines into the script as they want, but their motivations are still obvious. They’re right there, in the first few minutes, courtesy of Britney. Apple Cider Vinegar loves what Belle Gibson did, even if it knows that she’s toxic.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak 2 Review

7 février 2025 à 15:00

The concept of a multiverse is one that often seems to fit video games very naturally. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Bioshock Infinite both took good advantage of it to open their stories up to new possibilities, for example, but The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak 2 has hopped on the multiverse train with some mixed results. At times, its story doesn’t seem to go anywhere for hours on end, but it has some of the best character development the series has ever seen in exchange for that momentum. Daybreak 2 also introduces meaningful improvements to its hybrid action/turn-based combat, making it more engaging than ever before. The outcome is an RPG with pacing struggles, but still manages to be a good sequel in an already great series.

Daybreak 2 takes place shortly after the events of the previous game, following your mercenary hero Van Akride and his friend Elaine as they encounter a mysterious but familiar-looking red monster. In an entertaining twist, that first encounter actually ends with both Van and Elaine dead, with Van’s assistant, Agnes, somehow rewinding time in an act of desperation to save them. It’s an explosive setup that introduces the timeline-hopping mechanic in an interesting way. But rather than making the most of a multiverse’s potential for effective and emotional storytelling like the excellent Zero Escape series, Daybreak 2 mostly uses it as a deus ex machina to let the party opt out of sticky situations.

This causes the main story to be too drawn out over the roughly 60-hour campaign, and the mystery behind that crimson monster takes an unfortunate backseat as Van constantly dies in different timelines and tries to find a way to avoid his fate – sometimes going out in overly silly ways, like randomly stepping into a room filled with explosives. Being forced into bad endings like this just adds tedium, and hopping back in time gets particularly annoying in Chapter 3 as its sporadic use makes the story’s flow feel choppy.

However, even when the overarching tale falls flat, Daybreak 2 is filled to the brim with some of the best character development in the series. For example, the group’s researcher and tech geek Quatre comes to terms with his upbringing and his abusive cultish parents, while Feri, a young and naive mercenary, finds her inner sense of self after being kicked out of her family in the previous game. This is essentially the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 of the Trails series: It doesn't move the larger plot forward much, but the more personal, character-driven stories it focuses on instead are excellent.

Daybreak 2 manages to keep its growing roster under control.

It also manages to keep its growing roster under control by elevating some minor characters into full party members. A few old ones have been brought back as well, including Swin and Nadia from Trails into Reverie, who finally feel like complete characters here as their arcs cleverly conclude. Speaking of Reverie, Daybreak 2 follows a somewhat similar story structure – the first two chapters are actually split into two different routes, with Van leading one and Swin and Nadia the other. It’s a smart decision, and another example of how Daybreak 2 skillfully handles its expanding cast.

There is even a version of the Reverie Corridor called the Marchen Garten, which brings characters from the split routes together to fight through a rogue-lite dungeon full of randomized floors with a boss monster at the end. While this dungeon is completely optional, there are plenty of worthwhile incentives to tackle it. The main rewards are skill points, which let you permanently boost the capabilities of your party’s attacks. You can also unlock cosmetic goodies like alternate costumes – and in what’s always a breath of fresh air, those can only be earned in-game in the Marchen Garten as there are no real-world microtransactions at all.

The Trails series is known for its in-depth side quests, and Daybreak 2 is no different. They offer incredible amounts of worldbuilding, along with useful rewards such as rare items to help out Van and his friends on their journeys. One memorable side quest was about a company wondering why its migrant workers were leaving for a competitor that was offering them better pay, and it led to a deep dive into the multicultural history of Calvard, the country where Daybreak’s story takes place. Van and his friends eventually stumbled upon a human trafficking scheme to take advantage of the migrants and dismantled the operation. It showed that despite Van’s more morally gray methods, he has a strong code of ethics and knows when to stand up for what’s right.

With Van’s unique approach to mercenary work and the complex situations that come with it, it makes sense that the LGC morality system returns as well, but it lacks a similar impact this time. After completing a side quest, you can sometimes decide its conclusion, which then makes progress towards Van’s Law, Gray, and Chaos parameters. For example, Van could recommend that a victim in need of medical help go to the hospital, increasing his affinity for Law, or instead that they visit an underground doctor, which could increase his affinity towards Gray or Chaos. In the first game, Van’s affinity impacted which allies would join him in the later chapters, but there’s disappointingly no such trade-offs in Daybreak 2, which makes the LGC’s inclusion puzzling as it literally doesn’t affect the story.

It’s the little things

Trails Through Daybreak mixed up the series’ traditional turn-based combat by weaving in real-time action elements, much like Falcom’s sister series Ys. You approach an enemy out in the field and attack enough times to stun it, then transition to the much more fleshed out turn-based portion – and if that sounds familiar, it’s a system the incredible Metaphor: ReFantazio took some cues from just last year. But while it was admirable to try something new, Daybreak’s attempt at action felt quite barebones, so it’s nice that the sequel has added a few new mechanics to help make that real-time kickoff have a bigger impact.

For starters, when an enemy is stunned, you can now execute a powerful dual attack called Ex-Chain between two characters, which brings a much more exciting and quick end to battles than ever before. Dodging enemy attacks at the last moment also lets you swap control of characters and unleash a powerful strike that guarantees a stun. While the bulk of the combat system and the majority of its depth still revolves around the turn-based elements, these additions to the real-time action make it feel like the perfect appetizer to a main course.

This sequel doesn’t mess up what makes combat fun.

Like previous games, turn-based battles involve a turn order timeline for you to plan around. During battle, various bonuses will appear on the timeline, such as critical hit guarantees and zero-arts, which make it so magic spells that usually have long casting times can be fired off immediately. It provides an extra layer of strategy as you have to take into consideration which bonuses align with which characters on the timeline. For example, if a boss’s next turn is going to line up with a critical hit icon, you can either use an attack with the Delay effect to try and push back its action (potentially making it line up with an ally instead), or try to inflict the Freeze status effect so that it can’t act on its next turn, wasting the icon. Learning how to manipulate the timeline order makes combat much more engaging, and it is crucial to winning some of the harder late-game fights.

The positioning of your party still plays an important role in combat, too, as some attacks have various additional effects when used in certain spots. For example, Aaron’s Falcon Talon skill does extra damage when hitting enemies from behind. However, even if he can’t position himself at their backs, it also has the ability to inflict Seal, which is the Trails version of paralysis. Each skill has multiple effects like this, so even if you don’t manage to take advantage of all of their effects in one turn, they’re still incredibly useful. None of that is new to Daybreak 2 necessarily, but it’s important that this sequel doesn’t mess any of it up either.

The customization system remains virtually unchanged from its predecessor as well, but it still offers a great degree of flexibility when building out your party. Each character has four lines: Weapon, Shield, Drive, and Extra. By slotting elemental gems called Quartz in certain lines, your characters can learn Shard Skills, which are passive abilities. For example, slotting two water elemental Quartz in the Shield line nullifies the freeze status effect, but putting three in the Extra line provides HP regeneration every turn. It’s fun to play around with the various Quartz to see which combinations you can create to unlock different abilities.

To take your customization game to the next level, you’ll also have to take elemental values into consideration. For example, a simple Attack+1 Quartz you can purchase from the shop only has a fire elemental value of one, but a rare Burn Quartz you might find in a late game dungeon has an elemental value of five. In order to unlock one of the most powerful shard skills, called Executioner, which grants a follow-up attack on stunned enemies, you’ll need six fire and 12 wind elemental values in the Weapon Line. With at most four slots per line, that’s impossible to achieve with those puny Attack+1 Quartz, so finding more powerful Quartz and experimenting with them adds a nice layer of progression, making your characters feel even stronger as they reach the finale.

One step forward, one step back

Daybreak’s bonding events are back, called Connections here, and once again let Van hang out with his allies between big events in order to get to know them better. They offer a lot of character development outside of the main story, like one event where he spars with Trails into Reverie’s Shizuna. Afterwards, we learn about how her assistant, Kurogane, is actually an amazing cook alongside being a masked assassin. Shizuna also talks about her Black God One Blade fighting style and how it compares to others in the same school, referencing the Eight Leaves One Blade fighting style of Trails of Cold Steel protagonist, Rean Schwarzer. Small details like these really expand the Trails lore in a way that other ongoing series could only dream of.

Thankfully, Daybreak 2 has also brought back minigames that its predecessor noticeably removed. Not only is the fishing minigame back, it’s been revamped and simplified for the better. Instead of laborious button mashing to reel in fish like how so many other RPGs approach it, you just have to time your button presses well within a certain area multiple times to catch the fish. It’s a much smoother experience and less tiring on my thumbs.

Sadly, the other minigames are hit and miss. Its new card game, Seven Hearts, involves stacking elemental cards to deal damage to your opponents. It’s a faster-paced and welcome substitute to Blade from Trails of Cold Steel, but it isn’t as fleshed out as the collectible Vantage Masters minigame from Trails of Cold Steel III.

There is also a rather plain but innocuous new hacking game where you simply avoid hostile robots and reach the end of a maze, but the basketball and “tailing” minigames are the true offenders. The former is entirely too easy, and the latter is just as bad as it might sound. You’ll occasionally be asked to tail a suspect and hide whenever they look back at you, and these sequences are always just boring, annoying time wasters that I wish weren’t included at all.

Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 8 Gets a Patch of Its Own... Signalling Progress Towards a Full Release

7 février 2025 à 14:17

Larian Studios has released a patch for the Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 8 stress test, signalling progress is being made towards a full release of the final major update to the beloved Dungeons & Dragons based role-playing game.

Stress Test Update 1 is now available across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC, and includes mostly bug fixes focusing on things like Gale getting greedy for magical items again and radial menus showing their descriptions as intended.

Larian has also made "some fixes" for crossplay but is still investigating how to get it working properly. Photo mode has also been updated to include additional features and quality-of-life changes, alongside regular big fixes too. The full patch notes are available below.

Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 8 marks the end of an era for what's arguably the most beloved role-playing game of all time, though given its grandeur Larian released it in a closed beta form to iron out kinks ahead of a proper launch.

It originally went live a touch early but everything is in order now, with Larian seemingly planning to release a few patches for the patch before it's deemed ready for public release. No release window has been given for when this might be.

In our 10/10 review of the base Baldur's Gate 3, IGN said: "With crunchy, tactical RPG combat, a memorable story with complex characters, highly polished cinematic presentation, and a world that always rewards exploration and creativity, Baldur's Gate 3 is the new high-water mark for CRPGs."

Rocksteady Reportedly Working on Single-Player Batman Game, Monolith Productions’ Wonder Woman in Trouble

7 février 2025 à 14:15

A new report has shed light on the turmoil at Warner Bros. Games, while providing an update on the various projects in the works at its developers.

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported on concern about the upcoming slate of games from Warner Bros. Games following the exit of chief David Haddad.

The company has had a troubled 12 months, first with the catastrophic release of Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, then the disappointing release of Smash Bros.-style brawler MultiVersus.

Warner Bros. Discovery has said Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s failure contributed to a $200 million hit to its business, and MultiVersus added another $100 million on top. Warner Bros. Games' only other recent release was Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, which failed to make an impression.

Speaking in a financial call, Warner Bros. Discovery President and CEO David Zaslav said: "We recognise [the games business] is substantially underperforming its potential right now.”

Since then, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League post-launch content has come to an end with the delivery of its year one roadmap, and Warner Bros. has announced the impending closure of MultiVersus. Rocksteady, meanwhile, has suffered significant layoffs.

There are also question marks over Mortal Kombat 1’s financial performance, although NetherRealm chief Ed Boon recently announced over five million sales and teased future DLC following the release of the T-1000 Terminator guest character.

During the same financial call, Zaslav said Warner Bros. was doubling down on just four games: Hogwarts Legacy (a sequel is already in the works), Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, and DC, "in particular Batman."

"We are focusing our development efforts on those core franchises, with proven studios to improve our success ratio," Zaslav added.

But it may be some time before fans see the result of this work. Bloomberg said Monolith Productions’ Wonder Woman game is in trouble after reportedly rebooting and switching directors early last year. It’s already cost more than $100 million and is still years away from release, Bloomberg added.

Monolith’s reimagined Nemesis system (it developed the much-loved Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel) that would see Wonder Woman befriending enemies has been ditched in favor of a more traditional action adventure game. Its fate “remains in question.”

Gotham Knights developer WB Games Montreal, meanwhile, pitched a John Constantine game but it was never approved. A Flash game was scrapped after the DCU Flash film bombed. It’s now helping out with other games and is reportedly working on a pitch for a new Game of Thrones game.

Hogwarts Legacy developer Avalanche is, as officially announced, working on new content for Hogwarts Legacy as well as a sequel.

Fans of Rocksteady will be excited to hear the studio “is looking to return to Batman for a single-player game,” but according to Bloomberg, it’s years away. There is no word in Bloomberg’s report on what’s next from NetherRealm.

The upshot of this is Warner Bros. Games has, according to Bloomberg, a refreshed version of Hogwarts Legacy, a Lego game, and a few mobile games in the works for the next two years.

How Much Will Switch 2 Cost? Nintendo Says It Needs to Consider ‘The Price Range That Consumers Expect for Nintendo Products’

7 février 2025 à 13:42

Nintendo has outlined the various factors currently under consideration as it works to decide the price of the Switch 2.

While analysts have told IGN they expect the Switch 2 to cost $400 when it comes out later this year, Nintendo has yet to make any announcement on the next-gen console’s price.

In an investor-focused Q&A, Nintendo boss Shuntaro Furukawa responded to a question on whether the company’s thinking on what price ranges would be acceptable to consumers for the Switch 2, given changes in inflation and exchange rates compared to the situation when the OG Switch launched back in 2017.

“We are aware that, in addition to how inflation is currently proceeding, the exchange rate environment has also changed significantly since around the time we launched Nintendo Switch in 2017,” Furukawa said.

“We also need to consider the price range that consumers expect for Nintendo products. We think a multifaceted consideration of these factors is needed when deciding on the price of a product. I cannot tell you a specific price for Nintendo Switch 2 at this time, but we are taking various factors into account.”

It’s worth digging into the details here. Nintendo Switch launched at $299.99 and it held that price for a number of years. Now, nearly eight years later, what is the price range consumers expect for Nintendo products? Rival console makers Sony and Microsoft have increased the price of their current-gen consoles in unprecedented moves sparked by increased costs and inflation and currency trends.

As we’ve mentioned, analysts predict Nintendo will go with $400 for the Switch 2. This would be a step up from the $300 launch price of the original Nintendo Switch, a price NIntendo still maintains to this day outside of sales or bundles. The Nintendo Switch OLED model is $350, while the Nintendo Switch Lite costs $200. We don't know anything about the Switch 2’s specs or features beyond what was shown by Nintendo’s drive-by video reveal, but everything points to a bigger, more powerful next-gen console, making $400 seem like a reasonable landing zone.

Nintendo plans a Switch 2 Direct for April 2, when Nintendo will share a “closer look” at the console following its reveal last month. That reveal offered a look at the Switch 2 form factor, a glimpse at what looks like Mario Kart 9, and teased a potential ‘mouse’ mode for the new Joy-Con.

But there are still a number of unanswered questions about Switch 2, including what the mysterious new Joy-Con button does, how powerful the console is, and what its new ports might be used for. Nintendo will also hold Switch 2 hands-on events in cities around the world.

Meanwhile, Furukawa confirmed Nintendo has no plans to change the price of the OG Switch, despite the impending launch of the Switch 2, so expect little movement there.

Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Shared By Super Smash Bros. Creator and Fans Are Going Wild Over a New Game

7 février 2025 à 12:49

Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai has re-posted the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct date and time announcement with a single sound of excitement and fans are freaking out about it teasing a new entry in the beloved brawler series.

As reported by Automaton, Sakurai shared the Japanese version of Nintendo's announcement that it will fully unveil the Nintendo Switch 2 on April 2. "Ooh!" he said in the post, and while this could just be his own excitement, fans are hoping it means a new Super Smash Bros. game is coming to the next-generation hardware.

While the post doesn't mean too much by itself, there has been a stream of small hints and teases that could signify Sakurai is gearing up for another Super Smash Bros. game reveal. The famed developer began his own YouTube channel in 2022 but wound it down after promising he wasn't done making games, and his final video revealed he'd been working on a new game that could be revealed "sooner or later."

Nothing has been announced regarding a new Super Smash Bros. game, however, and Sakurai said previously he doesn't know how the franchise can get any bigger or better than the Switch entry, which even includes characters from beyond Nintendo like Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, Joker from Persona 5, Steve and Alex from Minecraft, and many more.

But it seems likely there will be a new Super Smash Bros. game for Switch 2, given the incredible sales success of Ultimate (35.88 million and counting). And it's worth remembering Nintendo has released a new Super Smash Bros. game for each of its consoles ever since the launch of the original Super Smash Bros. for N64 in 1999.

Dragon Age Co-Creator Offers EA Some Advice: Follow Baldur’s Gate 3 Developer Larian’s Lead

7 février 2025 à 12:44

Former BioWare developers have offered their thoughts on Dragon Age: The Veilguard and recent comments from the CEO of EA about its relative failure.

During a financial call, EA boss Andrew Wilson said Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to "resonate with a broad enough audience."

Last week, EA restructured Dragon Age developer BioWare to focus on Mass Effect 5 only, meaning some who worked on The Veilguard were moved to projects at other EA studios, while other staff were laid off.

The decision followed EA’s announcement that Dragon Age: The Veilguard had underperformed on its expectations for the long-awaited action RPG. EA said Dragon Age "engaged" 1.5 million players during its recent financial quarter, which was down nearly 50% from the company's projections.

IGN has chronicled some of Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s development challenges, including layoffs and the departure of several project leads at different stages. According to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, BioWare staff believe it was a miracle Dragon Age: The Veilguard released a complete game “after EA forced live-service into it, then reversed course.”

Wilson, however, suggested BioWare’s role-playing games need to have “shared-world features and deeper engagement alongside high-quality narratives” to reach the success EA demands.

“In order to break out beyond the core audience, games need to directly connect to the evolving demands of players who increasingly seek shared-world features and deeper engagement alongside high-quality narratives in this beloved category,” Wilson said.

“Dragon Age had a high-quality launch and was well-reviewed by critics and those who played. However, it did not resonate with a broad enough audience in this highly competitive market.”

Most took Wilson’s comments to mean that if Dragon Age: The Veilguard had “shared-world features" and “deeper engagement,” it might have sold more copies. But, as IGN has reported, a development reboot, backed by EA, saw Dragon Age shift from the skeleton of a multiplayer game with repeatable quests, a tech base, and the outline of a story, to a full-blown single-player RPG.

Now, former prominent BioWare staff are having their say on social media. David Gaider, who created the setting for Dragon Age and was its narrative lead before leaving BioWare in 2016, said EA isn’t learning the right lessons from The Veilguard.

“There are certainly all sorts of lessons a company could learn from a game like Veilguard (I still haven't played it, so I'm going off what other people have said), but ‘maybe it should have been live service’ being the takeaway seems a bit short-sighted and self-serving,” Gaider, now creative director at Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical developer Summerfall Studios, said.

“Not that there's any shortage of that, when it comes to deciding why a game doesn't do well. For the anti-woke crowd, for instance, there are woke games that do well and woke games that do poorly and only the ones that did poorly did so *because* they were woke. Says more about them than the game.”

Gaider then said EA should follow the lead of Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian and double-down on what Dragon Age did best. Baldur’s Gate 3 is of course a massive hit, and while it has multiplayer co-op, it is a predominantly single-player RPG experience.

“My advice to EA (not that they care): you have an IP that a lot of people love. Deeply. At its height, it sold well enough to make you happy, right? Look at what it did best at the point where it sold the most. Follow Larian's lead and double down on that. The audience is still there. And waiting,” Gaider continued.

Gaider wasn’t the only former prominent Dragon Age developer to respond to Wilson’s comments. Mike Laidlaw, chief creative officer at Eternal Strands developer Yellow Brick Games and former creative director on Dragon Age, went further and said that he’d quit if forced to turn a much-loved single-player game into a purely multiplayer game.

“Look, I'm not a fancy CEO guy, but if someone said to me ‘the key to this successful single-player IP's success is to make it purely a multiplayer game. No, not a spin off: fundamentally change the DNA of what people loved about the core game’ to me, I'd probably, like, quit that job or something,” he said.

Laidlaw continued: “Just thinking out loud, of course. Who'd be silly enough to demand something like that?

“...twice.”

Of course, Laidlaw did quit BioWare, back in 2017 amid Dragon Age's development troubles. BioWare's ill-fated live service game Anthem launched in 2019.

The upshot of recent events is that Dragon Age now appears dead, and BioWare is fully focused on Mass Effect 5, which is led by series veterans including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, and Parrish Ley.

EA CFO Stuart Canfield touched on EA’s decision to restructure BioWare to focus on the next Mass Effect, which has reportedly involved cutting the 200-person studio down to less than 100 people.

“Historically, blockbuster storytelling has been the primary way our industry bought beloved IP to players,” Canfield said. “The game's financial performance highlights the evolving industry landscape and reinforces the importance of our actions to reallocate resources towards our most significant and highest potential opportunities.”

Take-Two Boss Says 'Legacy' Civilization Audience Will Eventually Come Around on Civilization 7 Amid 'Mixed' Steam User Reviews

7 février 2025 à 10:53

Civilization 7 is out, and while the game has launched to a ‘mixed’ user review rating on Steam, the boss of parent company Take-Two believes hardcore fans of the series will eventually come to love it.

Firaxis’ 4X strategy sequel is currently available to those who pay more for advanced access, typically more hardcore fans of Civilization. And they’re certainly letting their voices be known in Steam user reviews, highlighting issues with the user interface, a lack of map variety, and a feeling that the game has launched without a number of features fans have come to expect.

Firaxis has responded to this feedback, promising improvements to the UI, the addition of teams to multiplayer games so people can play co-operatively, and a wider variety of map types, among other things.

In an interview with IGN ahead of the release of third quarter financial results, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged that Civilization 7 had received some negative reviews from press and players, namechecking Eurogamer’s 2/5 review, but insisted that the “legacy Civ audience” will come around the more they play, and called Civilization 7’s early performance “very encouraging.”

“The Metacritic reviews are at 81, which is really solid,” Zelnick said. “We have more than 20 press reviews with a score over 90. We have some negative outliers as well, including a 40 from Eurogamer.

“We think that as people play the game longer, the sentiment improves because with every launch of a new Civ, the team pushes the envelope a little bit and our legacy Civ audience is a little bit nervous about what they initially see and then they realize, wow, this is actually really incredible, and they dive in.

“So we feel really, really good about it. We know we have a couple of issues. We have a bit of an issue with the UI, for example. We'll address that. So I wouldn't say the early access release is perfect in every way. I think it's very, very encouraging and I think the areas that are concerning are areas that we can and will address, and as you can tell, we're quite mindful of them.”

Zelnick’s mention of hardcore Civ players being a little nervous about Civ 7 at launch is no-doubt a reference to some of the dramatic changes Firaxis has made to the game.

A full campaign in Civilization 7 is one that goes through all three Ages: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. Once the Age is completed, all players (and any AI opponents) experience an Age Transition simultaneously. During an Age Transition, three things happen: you select a new civilization from the new Age to represent your empire, you choose which Legacies you want to retain in the new Age, and the game world evolves. The Civilization games have never had such a system. Clearly, Zelnick believes Civ fans will come to love it over time.

In the shorter term, Firaxis has work to do turning sentiment around, particularly on Steam. A game’s Steam user review rating is crucial for its success on Valve’s platform. Not only is it a very public indication of what a player base thinks of a game, but it affects visibility on Steam itself.
