Apple settles years-old Apple Watch battery suit for $20 million

In 2019, a lawsuit was filed against Apple alleging that Apple Watch Series 1 through Apple Watch Series 3 were unsafe. According to the lawsuit, Apple ignored an issue that could cause the batteries to swell and break critical components, such as the screen.

Now, nearly six years later, a settlement has finally been reached. Apple has agreed to pay out $20 million to resolve the claims — but not because the company admits to any wrongdoing.

After strong earnings, Morgan Stanley inches up AAPL target to $275

Apple's latest earnings have impressed some investment advisors, with Morgan Stanley inching its Apple stock price target up to $275 mostly because of the long-term strength of Services.

While Apple's iPhone sales came in at a bit over $600 million dollars short of the year-ago quarter, there was enough good news in the report for a firm generally bullish on AAPL to increase its price target.

In a note seen by AppleInsider, investment firm Morgan Stanley has hiked its price target for AAPL to $275. This is a boost over just a week ago, where the firm had a $273 target, it now has a $275 goal.

CalDigit's new Element 5 hub brings more Thunderbolt 5 ports to the Mac

The new Element 5 Hub from CalDigit won't give you a large array of different ports, but is perfect if you want more Thunderbolt 5 ports, and a few USB-A ones.

When CalDigit released its TS4 dock in February 2022, it rapidly became an AppleInsider favorite because of its speed, its number of ports, and how those ports could deliver plenty of power for charging devices. CalDigit also has a compact Element range and now that includes a Thunderbolt 5-enabled Element 5 hub.

Specifically, it comes with nine ports, of which three are Thunderbolt 5. Those ports are also backwards compatible with both Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4, plus they can deliver up to 15W of power each.

Apple rumored to have a foldable display supplier selected soon

A new report claims Apple's decision over a supplier for a foldable screen is imminent, although it's not clear whether that's for an iPhone Fold or another device.

Despite recent rumors that Apple will not release a foldable device before 2027, a new leak says that the company is finalizing its supply chain's main contractor for a folding screen.

"Apple's new foldable display core supplier decision is imminent," writes leaker yeux1122 (in translation). "The industry expects [Apple] to make a decision by the end of February to the beginning of April."

Apple has more than 2.35 billion active devices, up 550 million since 2022

It has been a year since Apple provided insight on its total install base, but on the earnings call Thursday, CEO Tim Cook shared that it is 2.35 billion devices.

The first-quarter earnings call revealed a lot of small details about Apple's business. One metric anticipated by investors hasn't been shared since January 2024.

The previous number was 2.2 billion devices, which was 400 million higher than the number shared in 2022. Apple CEO Tim Cook shared that the number has reached a new record high of 2.35 billion active devices.

In a recent chat with CNBC ahead of the company's earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook explained that regions where the company has rolled out its AI platform, Apple Intelligence, saw stronger iPhone 16 sales compared to areas that didn't have it.

Tim Cook's remarks suggest that Apple Intelligence might have been a key factor in boosting iPhone 16 sales in markets where it's available. However, China has not yet seen the rollout of Apple Intelligence.

The first quarter of Apple's fiscal year is typically the biggest across all periods, following the usually intensive holiday shopping period and iPhone launches. The Q1 2025 results follow exactly the same pattern.

In the first quarter, Apple's revenue hit $124.3 billion, up from $119.58 billion reported one year ago in Q1 2024.

Apple may be considering a restart of advertising on X

The one-liner can be found in a Wall Street Journal report about Amazon increasing ad spend on X. Apple and other big tech companies paused ad spend in November 2023 after CEO Elon Musk promoted a post directed at the US Jewish community.

The report published by the University of Michigan's School of Public Health examined the data from 115,049 Apple Hearing Study participants, capturing levels via the Apple Watch Noise app. The team wanted to know if the noise levels of participants were raised during major events.

Apple enjoys 18th year at the top of Fortune's most admired companies list

Continuing its impressive eighteen-year winning streak, Apple has managed to secure first ranking on Fortune's annual 'Worlds Most Admired Companies' list once again.

To determine the best of the best, Fortune and it's partner, Korn Ferry, began with a list of 1,500 companies, of which 1,000 were the largest U.S. companies, ranked by revenue. The remaining were non-U.S. companies that made more than $10 billion in revenue.

Then, 3,380 executives, directors, and analysts were asked to rate enterprises in their own industry on nine criteria. Categories included things like investment value, quality of management, products, social responsibility, and ability to attract talent.

How TSMC beat Intel to be Apple's main chip foundry

In an interview with YouTube channel Acquired, TSMC founder Morris Chang explained how Apple paused talks with TSMC in February 2011, to hear a proposal from Intel. At the time, Intel wanted to become the firm to construct Apple's chips, in the midst of when Intel chips were used throughout the Mac lineup.
