A new report from a leaker with a mixed track record says that the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air may get a high-refresh rate display, but it won't be ProMotion.


ProMotion is the display technology that allows for the screen to refresh at different rates, to accommodate different needs. So for games or video, the screen or portions of it, can be faster and more responsive, while at other times it saves battery power with slower refreshing.

The feature was introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022, and has remained a Pro model feature. But since February 2024, persistent rumors have said that ProMotion will come to every model in the iPhone 17 range.

ChatGPT is OpenAI's extremely useful chatbot for answering questions. Here's how to use the generative AI tool in Apple's Notes app in macOS.


Apple Intelligence is now integrated with OpenAi's ChatGPT in macOS, ad well as iOS and iPadOS. Many features of ChatGPT are integrated with Apple apps starting in macOS Sequoia 15.1, and iOS and iPadOS 18.2.

While Apple has stated support for Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT are evolving and still in progress, some features are working and included in Apple's operating systems. Expect a further phased rollout of Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT in the near future.

Sunday night baseball games may soon be available via Apple TV+, as the company is reportedly seeking to land additional MLB streaming rights.


Apple has reportedly emerged as the company most likely to acquire Major League Baseball streaming rights previously held by ESPN. The iPhone maker currently offers Friday Night Baseball via Apple TV+, which consists of two baseball games every Friday without interruptions or restrictions, but that could soon change.

According to a Sports Business Journal report on Monday, Apple is looking to land streaming rights for MLB content beyond the scope of its current arrangement. Legacy media outlets such as NBC are also said to be in talks with MLB over the same streaming rights, but Apple's offer is said to be noticeably higher.

Starting with whether it will be called macOS 26 or macOS 16, there are so many rumors about what the next update to the Mac operating system will bring. Here's what's expected, and most likely to happen.


The only certainty is that the next major update to macOS will be announced on June 9, 2025, during the WWDC keynote. Beyond that, it is now looking highly likely that this successor to macOS 15 Sequoia will be called macOS 26 — and it's strongly rumored that it will be announced as macOS Tahoe.

If Apple does name macOS after a region in California, it will be continuing the now 12-year-long tradition. Previously, the then-called OS X was named after cats for around 11 years.

The classic first-person-shooter game "Doom" has been ported to an unexpected Apple product, with the three decade old Apple Network Server the latest hardware to be added to the compatibility list.


The Apple Network Server is a piece of hardware that, until May 2025, was not able to run ID Software's Doom. Thanks to an enterprising blogger, the game can be played on it.

Sold from 1996 until 1997, Apple Network Server was separate from the Macintosh lineup, as machines designed instead to run IBM's AIX operating system, not Apple's operating systems. Sold for over $10,000 at the time, they were the last non-Macintosh desktop computers that Apple made.

While the higher-profile DOJ antitrust lawsuit against Google continues, the company has reached a provisional settlement over similar accusations from its shareholders.


The Department of Justice continues to want Google to be broken up, and that case may be ruled on by August. But separately, shareholders led by two pension funds, took Google to court over antitrust violations, and according to Reuters, that case may now have been settled.

Google and the shareholders have reported agreed a settlement that will see the company commit half a billion dollars into overhauling its compliance structure. That investment is said to be spent over the next 10 years, though the settlement mandates that such compliance changes must stay in place for at least 4 years.

Apple has launched a WWDC placeholder video on YouTube where users can choose to be notified ahead of the live stream.


Just as it has before, Apple has begun its WWDC promotion on YouTube with an upload one week before the keynote, which streams on June 9, 2025. It's a regular YouTube Premiere, which means a holding image is available at the link, and there's also the option to turn on notifications.

The placeholder "a sleek peek at what's to come this WWDC," but the punning title is the event's strapline, rather than a promise of anything actually being shown before the keynote. "Set a reminder, turn on your notifications, and we'll send you an update before the keynote begins," it continues.

Apple appears to be preparing a unified design update across its platforms, with hints pointing to a visionOS-inspired redesign at WWDC 2025.


In early March, it was first rumored that Apple would overhaul its operating systems in hopes of making its platforms more cohesive. The reasoning is that the change should make the platforms feel familiar to people coming from one device to another.

The iPad has been credited with helping a concert pianist get over her stage fright, with the presence of the tablet making her feel more confident during a performance.


Artists of all kinds often suffer from stage fright, an anxiety that occurs when a person is about to perform to an audience. People deal with stage fright in various ways, but for one musician, it was simply having an iPad nearby.

In a Monday interview with NPR to promote her new album, concert pianist Simone Dinnerstein explained that she had to deal with decades of performance anxiety. Being onstage caused her to have panic attacks, which affected her confidence and ability to play.

Europe welcomed the iPhone 16e into its top 10 sellers in March, but Apple's midtier offering appears to still not be cheap enough for the local market.


Apple's new iPhone 16e secured a spot in Europe's top 10 smartphone rankings during its first full month on the market. But the midtier model underperformed compared to the company's earlier iPhone SE launches and may face headwinds from internal competition and economic pressures.

Launched at the end of February 2025, the iPhone 16e was the ninth best-selling smartphone in Europe in March, according to data from Counterpoint Research. It accounted for 8% of Apple's sales and 2% of total smartphone sales during the month.

As expected, Apple has formally filed an appeal against the European Union's ruling on interoperability, saying that it constitutes a massive privacy risk.


In December 2024, Apple made public its objections to the EU's interoperability plans in a white paper, centering on what it described as the Digital Markets Act's (DMA) security and privacy implications. Now as first spotted by Axios, the company's official appeal filing against the EU's fine repeats the points, and in particular stresses how other firms are set to exploit the ruling.

In a statement to AppleInsider, an Apple spokesperson says that the company is filing its appeal on behalf of the users it believes may potentially be harmed by the ruling.

As Jony Ive's AI startup is bought by OpenAI, he and investor Laurene Powell Jobs talk about collaboration, and how technology has damaged society as well as benefited it.


Jony Ive and Sam Altman's startup "io" was bought in May 2025 by Altman's OpenAI company, and is working on a new AI device. Prior to being bought, Laurene Powell Jobs invested in "io," and in a new Financial Times interview with both of them, Ive reveals that she has been crucial to his post-Apple work, including forming his own LoveFrom company.

"If it wasn't for Laurene," said Jony Ive, "there wouldn't be LoveFrom."

Like its previous OS versions that denoted significant changes, Apple is rumored to give the upcoming macOS 26 the name of a particularly notable California location.


Apple is reportedly overhauling the look of its various OSes with its next set of releases, expected to arrive in the fall of this year. Adopting the nomenclature of vehicle models, the company is set to jump from version numbers to reflecting the year ahead of release.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, macOS 26 will adopt the name Tahoe, after California's Lake Tahoe resort area.

The upcoming WWDC keynote may not help raise the profile and functionality of Apple Intelligence much, with a report claiming Apple's AI announcements will be sparse, and disappointing.


Following the introduction of Apple Intelligence at WWDC in 2024, the AI effort at Apple has endured an agonizingly slow and rocky rollout. While the 2025 event offers an opportunity for Apple to turn things around, a report offers little hope that Apple will do just that.

A new report claims that internally, Apple has already been testing Large Language Models for Siri that are vastly more powerful than the shipping Apple Intelligence, but executives disagree about when to release it.


Backing up AppleInsider's position that Apple is not behind on AI, the company has regularly been publishing research showing its progress moving the field forward. Now according to Bloomberg, Apple has already been working with AI systems considerably more power than the on-device Apple Intelligence it has shipped so far.

A leaker has broken from the pack, and is now saying that the core iPhone 17 will stick with the already released A18 chip, while the rest of the line gets chips derived from the A19.


It's generally accepted by the vast majority of leakers that the entire iPhone 17 line, including the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro, will boast the A19 chip, with varying amounts of RAM.

Now in a new note to investors, Jeff Pu from GF Securities is recanting one of his previous reports. He is now going against every other leaker in saying that the core iPhone 17 will stick with the A18 processor found in the iPhone 16 lineup.

While the iOS 18 update focused largely on Apple Intelligence features, such as Image Playground, email summarization, and a new Clean Up tool in the Photos app, its successor is expected to take a noticeably different approach.

Apple rejected nearly two million apps in 2024, cracking down harder than ever on fraud, spam, and low-effort software.


The company rejected 1.93 million app submissions in 2024, according to its App Store Transparency Report, released in May 2025. The annual report outlines how Apple enforces App Store policies and manages content across its global platform.

Apple reviewed approximately 7.7 million app submissions in 2024, rejecting over 1.9 million for failing to meet its standards. Nearly one in four were denied, typically for violating rules around performance, design, or business practices.

Apple's iPhone has taken a bite out of Hollywood horror, playing a key role in the visual storytelling of the new "28 Years Later" movie.

Apple's WWDC 25 may change not just the numbering but also absolutely everything about how macOS, iOS, and iPadOS feel, Nothing's CEO says Apple has lost all creativity, and yet more tariff drama, all on this' week's episode of the AppleInsider Podcast.


We're so close now to WWDC that more details appear to be leaking out, including the surprise news that Apple may renumber all of its operating systems so that they have the same, consistent branding. It turns out that it's 12 years since Apple started naming macOS with Californian placenames — and for about 11 years before that, it was using cat names. So maybe it's time.

Just hours after courts allowed the "liberation day" tariffs to continue pending appeal, President Donald Trump is claiming that China has violated a preliminary trade agreement with the US.


In a post on Truth Social, the President claims that the 90-day tariff pause resulted in already-closed factories, and "civil unrest" in the country — neither of which appear to have happened. The post on Friday also says that China has violated whatever agreement was in place for a 90-day pause in tariffs presently in place.

Haptic buttons are coming not just for the iPhone, but also devices including the iPad and the Apple Watch, as Project Bungo is said to have been revived.


In 2024, AppleInsider exclusively proved that Apple had intended for the iPhone 15 Pro to feature haptic buttons, replacing its physical ones. The design even reached Apple's EVT-stage prototyping, and was later revealed in a patent application.

The so-called Project Bongo was reportedly cancelled because of continuing technical problems. Reportedly, test results were unsatisfactory, and there were high hardware failure rates.

Showrunner and executive producer Jonathan Tropper has been signed to his third exclusive deal with Apple TV+, following the success of his latest Jon Hamm drama.


Tropper is currently writing a forthcoming "Star Wars" movie, but was previously the showrunner on "See," which he joined in 2019, and then had his Apple TV+ deal renewed in 2022. According to industry publication Deadline, Tropper has now signed his third consecutive and exclusive deal with Apple TV+ for television projects.

"See," created and written by Steven Knight, concluded in 2022. Since then, most of Tropper's Apple TV+ work has been on projects that have yet to start streaming, such as the limited series called "Lucky," based on Marissa Stapley's novel.

A U.S. trade court ruled that President Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs were illegal on Wednesday, but the administration has been granted a temporary stay until arguments are filed.


The Trump administration implemented wide-ranging and incredibly high tariffs throughout its initial weeks of being in power. After a lot of back and forth, exemptions, threats of new tariffs, and a lot of uncertainty, the madness seemed to be ending thanks to a U.S. trade court ruling.

That respite was short-lived, however, as CNBC reports that an appeals court has stayed the permanent injunction until June 9. That's the deadline for both parties to file arguments about the case, and the courts will then decide if a longer stay is in order during appeal.

Apple is allowing emulators on the App Store. Here's what's arrived, and what's on the way to play your favorite retro games on your iPhone, updated on May 29.


The early April changes to the App Store Review Guidelines reversed a rule that practically banned emulators from the App Store. After the rule was removed, it was expected that there would be a sudden rush of emulators being submitted to Apple for inclusion in the digital storefront.

Emulators for the iPhone have existed for a while, but outside of the App Store as a side-loadable app. With Apple's changes, some of the projects are making the transition, and potentially gaining more traction from a larger user base in the process.

The iPhone 17 could end up with a larger display than the iPhone 16, with a new supply chain rumor reinforcing previous rumors of a 6.3 inches diagonal screen.


The iPhone range has different sizes of display, depending on the model. For the iPhone 16 generation, the smallest was 6.1 inches diagonally, but the size of the standard model could be a bit bigger in the iPhone 17 family.

According to a subscriber post on X from DSCC founder and Counterpoint Research VP Ross Young, the screen of the base iPhone 17 will be bigger than that of the iPhone 16. Specifically, the iPhone 17 will be shifting from 6.1 inches in the previous model to 6.3 inches.
