iPhone 17 Air -- All the rumors about Apple's thinnest iPhone yet

Apple is rumored to be shaking up its 2025 iPhone lineup, with a new ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air. Here's what the rumor mill thinks is coming.

Three sleek smartphones in gold, silver, and green, arranged diagonally against a gradient background, featuring minimalist design and single rear cameras.
Apple is expected to debut an ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air or iPhone 17 Slim in 2025.

The long-rumored iPhone 17 Air, or iPhone 17 Slim as it's sometimes called, is set to launch alongside the standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. It will, however, replace the Plus variant of the iPhone, which hasn't seen significant popularity with end consumers.

Just as the iPhone 14 Plus replaced the iPhone 13 mini in 2022, the iPhone 17 Air will appear in place of the Plus model for 2025. Rather than simply being a larger version of the standard iPhone, Apple's new iPhone Air model will focus on thinness above all else.

Thunderbolt 5 was finalized in 2024, but it wasn't until January's CES 2025 show that we started to see devices get announced. CalDigit, known for its excellent peripherals, was quick as always with its Element5 Hub.

It was soon followed by its more full-featured docks, but the Element 5 Hub is great for something more affordable and compact. Plus, it still has eight downstream ports to utilize.

Five years of Apple Silicon, and ten years of Apple Watch on the AppleInsider Podcast

While we'll never stop looking ahead to what's coming, and never stop looking at what's going on right now, it's also time to look back at how much Apple Silicon and the Apple Watch have meant to us all.

A person with silver hair attentively looks at an open laptop, which reflects a soft, colorful light on their face, in a dimly lit room.
Craig Federighi revealing how Apple Silicon MacBook Pro just switches on the instant you open the lid

It's unbelievable that we've had Apple Silicon for half a decade — or the Apple Watch for a whole decade. Both were so strongly rumored for so long before they were announced, and both have become enormous successes since. It would be hard to go back to the pre-Apple Silicon days now, and you wouldn't rush to give up your Apple Watch either.

This week has also seen developers accusing Apple of using bug reports to train AI, though, and there's also plenty to say about what's been happening with Apple Intelligence. Plus Apple is being sued — again — and this time the reasons for it are a lesson for us all about protecting our iPhones and our data.

Apple wants nearly every iPhone 18 sold in the US to come from India

Apple will reportedly dramatically accelerate manufacturing efforts in India, and may try to import nearly every iPhone 18 sold in the US from the country by the end of 2026. There are reasons to be skeptical that this will happen.

Foxconn's iPhone manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, India

Apple has been manufacturing iPhones in India for a few years. Opinions vary on how many devices imported to the US come from the country, but if Friday morning's report first made by the Financial Times is accurate, that number will skyrocket in the next 20 months.

While a lofty goal, we're skeptical about the report. At the moment, India produces about 40 million iPhones per year for both local distribution requirements and export — a bit less than a fifth of Apple's global iPhone production.

For years before then, the very idea of an "iWatch" was both mocked and longed for. After it was launched in 2015, after Apple Watch became a reality, it was still mocked a little, and it was still longed for a lot.

Uncertainty returns for Apple as Trump tariff pause halved for countries not making a deal

After historic ups and downs in the market, things flattened out a bit while President Trump paused the extreme tariffs levied on "Liberation Day." Markets actually closed slightly up on Wednesday due to signs of the US planning to ease pressure off of China, but that stress relief has only lasted a few hours as things have changed again.

According to a report from CNN based on remarks President Trump made in the Oval Office on Wednesday evening, the 90-day pause will end sooner for select entities. Specifically, any country or company not actively trying to reach a deal with the Trump administration, or those unable to accept offered terms of a deal, will have tariffs set for them.

Compressing folders on an iPad can be useful for two main reasons — optimizing storage and making it easier to handle multiple files. When you compress a folder, you reduce its size in some cases, but not always.

For example, files like JPEGs or other formats that are already compressed won't shrink much further. However, the real benefit of compression is in bundling multiple files into one.

Perhaps especially now when Apple has been granted a patent — that it has already been granted. This happens when the company puts through an amended version after the original is granted, and very often it's close to impossible to spot what has changed.

Apple's artificial intelligence rollout has been anything but smooth, so much so that the BBB National Programs' National Advertising Division spurred the company to rethink its claims to customers.

Apple's had a rough time trying to get its artificial intelligence, which it calls Apple Intelligence, into the hands of its customers. Between backlash over incorrect notification summaries and multiple delays, it seems like Apple can't catch a break.

On Tuesday, the National Advertising Division (NAD) released a statement chiding Apple for dishonest advertising. The division had launched an inquiry into the matter after receiving claims that the company had been promoting features that did not yet exist.

Tariffs not stopping Americans from wanting new iPhones with Apple Intelligence

Investment firm Morgan Stanley's latest US buyer survey shows record numbers intend to upgrade their iPhone — and that they want Apple Intelligence, especially if they can also get a thin or foldable model.

Apple Intelligence is coming this fall

Morgan Stanley has been rapidly dropping its price target for Apple, starting 2025 at $275, then dropping to $252 in March because of fears of lower than expected iPhone upgrades. Then the company expected Apple to drop to between $200 and $210 because of tariffs, which were then so much worse than anticipated, that it predicted a drop to as little as $172.

So even while it maintained its own price target at $220, Morgan Stanley can't have been expecting a great response from buyers in its latest survey. But according to an investor note seen by AppleInsider, that's what it got.

While the series isn't actively being developed by Bungie itself, and ownership of the intellectual property is in question, the franchise is still being worked on by a devoted group of fans.

The April 20 release of Myth: Twice Born Edition is a remaster of titles under the franchise, including the original Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth II: Soulblighter, up to the "Chimera" expansion pack. The remaster includes upgrades to every display asset, either remastered from the original assets, upscaled from the original sprites, or recreated in the same artistic style.

MacBook shipments soared in early 2025 over tariff fears

According to Counterpoint Research, global PC shipments rose 6.7% year over year in the first quarter of 2025, reaching 61.4 million units. That headline figure, though, deserves a closer look.

Much of the uptick came from vendors rushing to ship products before new U.S. tariffs take effect, meaning the spike reflects inventory movement, not consumer demand.

Trade war escalations between Trump and China to significantly impact Apple

China previously called Trump's trade war a joke and said it would not retaliate further than matching what was then said to be a 125% tariff imposed by the US. That tariff was then revealed to actually be 145%, and China did not escalate its own tariffs — although it did halt rare earth mineral exports.

Now, however, CNBC reports that China has responded to what appears to be Trump's next move. While not announced by Trump or any other country involved, it is believed that isolating China is a key part of the White House's tariff negotiations worldwide.

The change was also meant to facilitate a visual distinction between Apple's base model iPhones and the more expensive "Pro" lineup. In April 2023, the hardware was abruptly removed from the iPhone 15 Pro, and it was believed that all work on the Bongo design had ceased. Surprisingly, however, it turns out that Apple had filed a patent application for its haptic button design.

While the reprieve itself is not permanent, with a semiconductor tariff expected to arrive in the future, the exemptions were immediately helpful to Apple. Indeed, a few days later, Trump confirmed that he was in talks with Tim Cook, and that he "helped" him with the tariff exemption.
