Crowds gather outside Giorgio Armani’s Milan HQ to pay respects before funeral

5 septembre 2025 à 18:39

Funeral chamber to be set up at Teatro Armani where people can view casket before a private service on Monday

Twice a year, the usually calm Via Bergognone in Milan shuts down due to excited fashion week crowds descending on Teatro Armani. Home to the Giorgio Armani headquarters since 2000, the sprawling space includes a purpose-built theatre where each show season a catwalk is constructed.

On Friday, crowds again began to gather outside but this time the mood was much more sombre. They had come to pay their final respects to the visionary Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, who died on Thursday at the age of 91.

Kennedy Center ticket sales take a nosedive after Trump takeover

5 septembre 2025 à 18:03

Prestigious Stuttgart Ballet likely to face 80% empty seats at DC’s premier arts venue as audiences ‘vote with their feet’

Ticket sales at the Kennedy Center have continued to plummet following Donald Trump’s takeover of Washington DC’s premier performing arts venue, with the prestigious Stuttgart Ballet expected to dance next month to houses less than 20% full.

Audiences are “voting with their feet to skip out” on shows that would once have been packed, in protest at the US president inserting himself into the center’s management and operations as its new chairman, amid discussions around the notion of renaming it after Trump, according to an analysis by the Washingtonian magazine.

Abby Dow and England near record territory as Australia search for upset

5 septembre 2025 à 17:46

Red Roses hoping to extend winning streak to 30 games while Wallaroos hunt for spot in quarter-finals

Nothing the Red Roses do is boring. Those are the words of the centre Tatyana Heard as England head into their final pool match of the Rugby World Cup with the aim of topping the group and equalling their own world record of consecutive wins. If the heavy favourites come away with a victory against Australia, they will extend their winning streak to 30 games.

Their previous 30-match run ended in the 2022 World Cup final defeat, which is the last time they were beaten. Discussions in the buildup to this tournament had been around whether it would be beneficial for England to have lost a game between the World Cups to bank a different experience. But that is not the mentality in the Red Roses camp and the defence coach, Sarah Hunter, says the current run of victories has not been brought up.

Daniel Levy was a loyal custodian of Spurs who knew his job was to protect the club | David Pleat

5 septembre 2025 à 17:35

Many supporters regard winning as the only thing that matters but the fan on the street doesn’t understand the intricacies of running a club

When Daniel Levy took over as Tottenham’s chair in 2001 I was introduced to him by Alan Sugar and promised that, as director of football, I would help him get his feet under the table as quickly as possible. The club he leaves behind almost 25 years later is one many players from around the world would love to be part of.

Daniel very swiftly understood the difficulties of running a big football organisation with so much emotion attached. He had to parry a great deal of hurtful and at times unfair criticism but he remained a sensible custodian and a workaholic who was astute and principled.

Western troops in Ukraine would be ‘legitimate targets’, Putin says

Russian president’s threat follows French proposal for postwar support for Kyiv that would include presence of Nato countries’ forces

Vladimir Putin has said any western troops placed in Ukraine would be “legitimate targets” for Russian strikes, upping the stakes as Kyiv’s allies scramble to come up with a convincing offer of postwar support to Ukraine.

Speaking a day after the French president, Emmanuel Macron, announced still-vague plans for a package of support for Ukraine backed by 26 nations, Putin on Friday said any guarantees that involved boots on the ground would violate Moscow’s longstanding objections to Nato troops in Ukraine.

US and UN discuss Gaza reconstruction plan before general assembly

5 septembre 2025 à 17:27

Talks aimed at preventing row at UN conference, where several countries plan to recognise state of Palestine

A potential UN-endorsed reconstruction plan for Gaza, including a one-year technocratic government, an international stabilisation force, disarmament of Hamas and a rejection of mass deportation of Palestinians, is being discussed with the US to prevent the UN general assembly descending into a bitter row about the symbolic recognition of Palestine as a state.

It is almost certain that the UK, France, Canada, Belgium and Malta will recognise the state of Palestine at a UN conference on 22 September to be held on the sidelines of the general assembly, in the week when world leaders deliver major speeches.

‘Humanity is facing a reckoning’: Venice shrugs off the glamour to take aim at politics

5 septembre 2025 à 17:23

Stars waved as usual from the city’s water taxis, but there was a repeated focus on films that help audiences interpret a chaotic world

For most of its 82 years, Venice has been perceived as the world’s most glamorous film festival. This year was no exception: stars including Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett, Jude Law and George Clooney dutifully waved from canals and trooped down red carpets (although Law tripped while on a water taxi and Clooney got ill).

But the films themselves struck a different note. Jury president Alexander Payne may have rebutted questions about current affairs during his opening press conference, declaring himself concerned only with discussing cinema, but cinema at Venice this year was concerned largely, it turned out, with discussing current events.

Trump’s radical agenda will ultimately reach a supreme court stacked in favor of conservatives

5 septembre 2025 à 13:03

Court has already dramatically limited ability of lower courts to issue injunctions to pause administration policies across the US

This week’s dramatic court ruling that Donald Trump’s sweeping trade tariffs, which he has used to upend global trade, were in fact illegal is the latest in a series of losses for the president’s radical agenda that are ultimately heading for a final showdown in the US supreme court.

Trump has already asked the supreme court to overturn the lower court ruling in the tariffs case. Almost certain to follow are Trump’s invocation of the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelans, his hostile conflict with Harvard University and his deployment of the national guard and marines to Los Angeles. All have been deemed unlawful in lower courts.

US Navy Seals shot and killed a number of North Korean civilians during a botched covert mission to plant a listening device in the nuclear-armed country during high-stakes diplomatic negotiations in 2019, the New York Times reported on Friday.

Citing unidentified sources, including current and former military officials with knowledge of the still-classified details, the newspaper said Donald Trump approved the operation during his first administration, as he was involved in historic talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Inside the gun absolutists’ bold plot to repeal one of America’s strongest firearms laws

5 septembre 2025 à 16:00

Gun Owners of America, which sees the NRA as soft, has the National Firearms Act in its sights – and it’s ready for battle

Before Donald Trump had even won last year’s presidential election, Gun Owners of America, one of the country’s most aggressive second amendment champions, saw an opportunity to use the coming budget bill to overturn one of the country’s core gun laws. Their target: the National Firearms Act.

Passed in 1934 in response to gangster-era crime, the NFA imposed registration and a $200 tax on machine guns, silencers, and short-barreled rifles and shotguns. The tax roughly equaled nearly $5,000 back then, acting as a de facto ban for most would-be buyers.

Why is much of the media ignoring questions about Trump’s health? | Margaret Sullivan

5 septembre 2025 à 16:00

Most of the mainstream media is overly cautious in approaching the fair topic of the president’s health

Prestigious news organizations gave scant attention when, for several days recently, Donald Trump faded from public view. Other than some social media posts and some blurry golf-course images, the normally ubiquitous president seemed almost to disappear.

But most of Big Journalism gave that subject a pass.

Swiftie boyfriends face proposal pressure: ‘Taylor and Travis put you on the clock’

5 septembre 2025 à 15:00

After Swift and Kelce’s blowout news, some diehard fans are eager to be engaged at the same time as their pop idol

Colleen O’Connor knows it sounds strange, but she thinks of Taylor Swift as a friend. The pop singer is 35; O’Connor, who works in public relations and lives in Long Island, New York, is just one year younger. “I’ve been a fan since day one, back in high school, and she’s been there through every phrase and journey of my life,” O’Connor said.

So when Swift announced her engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce last week, O’Connor reacted as many thirtysomething women do when they learn that a girlfriend secured a ring. First, she screamed so loudly her boyfriend thought someone had died. Then she wondered aloud to him: “When’s it going to happen for us?”

The day
Taylor Swift
got engaged,

little girls screamed,
grown women cried,

RFK Jr’s anti-science agenda will be catastrophic for the United States | Moustafa Bayoumi

5 septembre 2025 à 15:00

The CDC – the federal agency in charge of protecting the health of Americans – is in shambles. And that is all thanks to one man

Things seem to be going well at the CDC, the federal agency charged with protecting US public health. By “well” I mean terrible, thanks to the leadership of the health and human services secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr. Not only is the agency in complete disarray under his leadership, but the secretary’s fringe agenda is now also putting the lives of everyone in the country at risk.

Let me recount a few of Kennedy’s stellar accomplishments. He is, after all, a man labeled “a crown jewel of this administration” by Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff. In June, Kennedy fired all 17 members of the CDC’s advisory committee on immunization practices (ACIP), a panel that has long developed scientifically based recommendations on the use of vaccines. Kennedy dropped them like a hot beaker and replaced them with new members, several of whom share his anti-vaccine views and half-baked skepticism of the most common mRNA Covid-19 vaccines.
