16 août 2025 à 21:34

Protesters holding placards outside City Hall detained on suspicion of displaying item in support of proscribed group

Police arrested 13 people at a protest in Norfolk on Saturday on suspicion of showing support for the proscribed group Palestine Action.

A group assembled outside City Hall in St Peters Street, Norwich, holding placards referencing the organisation, Norfolk police said. The force said they were arrested on suspicion of displaying an item in support of a proscribed organisation, contrary to section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Cyprus welcomes resignation of UK trade envoy after visit to occupied north

16 août 2025 à 21:10

Afzal Khan had said visit to Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus was in personal capacity but resigned after furore

Cyprus has welcomed the resignation of the UK’s trade envoy to Turkey, Afzal Khan, saying it sends “a resounding message” amid widespread criticism of the Labour MP’s recent visit to the island’s breakaway Turkish-occupied north.

Khan had defended his trip on 8 August in a letter to the British prime minister, Keir Starmer, claiming it was conducted “in a personal capacity during the parliamentary recess”.

Grealish never conformed as Guardiola’s ‘obedient little schoolboy’ but glorious third act beckons | Jonathan Wilson

16 août 2025 à 21:00

Midfielder’s time at Man City has been turbulent but there is hope Everton can help him rediscover sense of joy on the pitch

A figure toils alone at Bodymoor Heath. The light fades, but against the setting sun his silhouette is distinctive: the floppy hair, the hunched gait, the vast calves. Jack Grealish is working, honing and polishing, inventing, striving at the limits of technical excellence.

He has inspired Aston Villa to promotion. He has helped them avoid relegation, establish themselves as a Premier League side. He is enormously popular. Even opposing fans admire his ability, warm to the sense he is still in some way the impish kid in the playground, revelling in his ability, having fun. That summer at the Euros he had become a cause célèbre, the figure behind whom the clamour for Gareth Southgate to release the handbrake rallied, the poster boy for the sort of pundit who wished England would just believe in talent.

Manchester City sweep Wolves aside with Haaland double and debut goals

16 août 2025 à 20:39

Whether Manchester City restore their powers as the Premier League’s formidable force after a summer of change remains one of the great unknowns but for Pep Guardiola the early evidence in victory at Wolves was supremely encouraging.

The substitute Rayan Cherki, a summer signing from Lyon, capped the scoring within eight minutes of entering and Tijjani Reijnders, another one of those pinpointed to drive the close-season makeover, was peerless on his league debut; the Netherlands midfielder was the architect for Erling Haaland’s double, which bookended Reijnders’s first City goal, a feathery first-time finish. “City are back,” crooned the away support and, by the end, it was hard to argue otherwise.

Wilson double sparks remarkable Australia comeback win to stun South Africa

Par :Reuters
16 août 2025 à 19:14
  • South Africa 22-38 Australia

  • Wallabies recover from 22-0 down to sink Springboks

Australia rallied from 22-0 down as Harry Wilson, their captain, scored two tries in a stunning 38-22 bonus-point victory over South Africa in their Rugby Championship opener on Saturday, the Wallabies’ first victory at Ellis Park in Johannesburg since 1963.

South Africa raced into a seemingly commanding lead through tries by the wing Kurt-Lee Arendse, the centre André Esterhuizen and the No 8 Siya Kolisi, but their achilles heel has been the breakdown and it was there that Australia began to take control.

Mayenda sparks stunning Sunderland start to increase Potter’s West Ham pain

Advertising hoardings dotted around Sunderland are adorned with enticing images of long sandy beaches and invite visitors to embark on adventures in “our city by the sea”. It is all part of an £80m project intended to reinvent and regenerate the post-industrial riverside area around the Stadium of Light but West Ham had evidently not bargained for this rejuvenation extending to the football team.

As the second half unfolded, an exhilarating afternoon that exceeded the wildest dreams of even the most optimistic Sunderland fans became not so much an adventure as an ordeal by the North Sea for West Ham’s manager.

Rodrigo Muniz’s last-gasp strike rescues point for Fulham at Brighton

16 août 2025 à 18:13

A season opener with rustiness abounding was heading Brighton’s way. Then came echoes of last season, when 22 points were conceded from winning positions. Once Matt O’Riley had slotted a penalty after Sander Berge’s ill-judged challenge, Fulham had to wait for the 95th minute for a genuine chance. Volleyed wide by an aghast Kenny Tete it would not be the last, Rodrigo Muniz smashing in a Harry Wilson corner to equalise.

The ball had been allowed to travel to the second-half sub on the back post. Muniz, one of many strikers linked with Newcastle, and this week linked with Atalanta and Champions League football, chested down to crash home. The delighted away fans implored the Brazilian to stay. “He’s very strong,” said Marco Silva, the Fulham manager. “Rodrigo created something with the fans that is not easy to do.”

Thomas Frank off to perfect league start as Richarlison helps Spurs beat Burnley

It is hard to imagine how this could have gone any better for Thomas Frank. In front of an exuberant home crowd still basking in ending their long wait for a trophy, a breathtaking bicycle kick from a rejuvenated Richarlison sealed a convincing victory in the Dane’s first Premier League match in charge of Tottenham.

The new £55m signing Mohammed Kudus was also outstanding as he set up both of the Brazilian’s goals before Brennan Johnson rounded things off against a Burnley side that proved a tough nut to crack. After conceding the opener to Richarlison – who was a bit-part player under Ange Postecoglou last season and had been linked with a move away this summer – in the 10th minute, Scott Parker’s side had their chances against a Spurs defence that creaked at times. They ultimately paid the price of their profligacy but will be encouraged by this display.

Farage adviser said UK would be better off if it had not fought in WW2

Exclusive: Jack Anderton says UK may ‘regain’ former colonies in future and suggests end to support for Ukraine

An adviser used by Nigel Farage and others in Reform UK to boost their social media popularity has suggested that Britain would be better off had it stayed neutral in the second world war instead of fighting Nazi Germany.

Jack Anderton, who ran Farage’s hugely successful TikTok account before helping Luke Campbell become the Reform mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire, also said the UK should not support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.

Dan Ndoye’s journey from ‘little lion’ to Nottingham Forest’s new main man

16 août 2025 à 18:00

Swiss signing ignored interest from Serie A winners Napoli because he senses ‘something special’ at the City Ground

During Dan Ndoye’s couple of seasons at Bologna, he kept a few shirts – with his name and number on the reverse – stashed in the glove box of his car in case he bumped into young supporters around town. Naturally, he had a pen handy for autographs, too. It is a nugget that epitomises his down-to-earth character, which radiates as he discusses his £35m move to Nottingham Forest this summer. “If I can give away a couple of shirts here, I will do so with pleasure,” he says. “Sometimes a small gesture can make a big difference.”

As a kid who idolised Neymar, a signed shirt from one of his heroes was the stuff of dreams. Ndoye, who trained with his Forest teammates for the first time last week, was born in Nyon to a Senegalese father, Saliou, and a Swiss mother, Virginie, and came through the ranks at Lausanne. The 24-year-old values his African roots – he visits his grandmother in Dakar when time allows – and incorporated them into his now-trademark celebration, where he mimics a growling big cat displaying its claws. “I was always asking myself: ‘What celebration can I do that represents myself?’ The Senegal national team are known as the Lions of Teranga and my mum, since I was a kid, always called me a little lion, because every time I would always give my best.”

Wolves v Manchester City: Premier League – live

16 août 2025 à 20:07
  • Updates from the 5.30pm BST kick-off at Molineux

  • Get in touch! Share your thoughts with Scott

4 min: City have settled quickly. They’re already dominating possession. Bobb slips Reijnders into space on the right but the £34m signing from Milan runs the ball out for a goal kick.

2 min: Doku scampers down the left and crosses deep. Haaland is lurking, so Moller Wolfe is taking no chances, and heads behind for the first corner of the match. Silva swings it in, but it’s cleared easily enough.

Putin demands full control of Donetsk and Luhansk as condition for ending Ukraine war – live

16 août 2025 à 21:47

Putin told Trump he would halt further advances and freeze Ukrainian frontline where Russian forces occupy significant areas, sources say

For those who feared the summit on Ukraine might resemble Neville Chamberlain’s appeasement of Adolf Hitler in 1938, the reality was worse.

The Guardian’s David Smith has this politics sketch from Anchorage:

Today, following a conversation with President Trump, we further coordinated positions with European leaders. The positions are clear. A real peace must be achieved, one that will be lasting, not just another pause between Russian invasions.

Killings must stop as soon as possible, the fire must cease both on the battlefield and in the sky, as well as against our port infrastructure. All Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians must be released, and the children abducted by Russia must be returned. Thousands of our people remain in captivity – they all must be brought home. Pressure on Russia must be maintained while the aggression and occupation continue.

Zuhri had come to Italy with her mother on one of three Italian air force flights that arrived this week with a total of 31 critical patients suffering from serious congenital diseases, wounds or amputations, the Italian foreign ministry said at the time.

Keely Hodgkinson takes astonishing 800m Diamond League win after 376 days out

16 août 2025 à 17:11
  • Olympic 800m champion had not raced since Paris final

  • Time of 1:54.74 is fastest of year and ninth on all-time list

Even by Keely Hodgkinson’s standards this was astonishing. The Olympic 800m gold medallist had not raced for 376 days due to a series of hamstring problems. Yet on a blistering hot day in Poland she marked her return by destroying a quality field in 1min 54.74sec – the fastest time in the world this year by nearly two seconds.

Hodgkinson’s effort was also the ninth fastest in history and it was perfect timing, given the world championships in Tokyo starts in a month.

Hurricane Erin intensifies to category 5, moving through north-east Caribbean

16 août 2025 à 18:11

Erin not expected to make landfall, though nearby islands, including Puerto Rico, brace for flooding

Hurricane Erin has intensified into a category 5 storm as it churns its way over the Atlantic, brushing past islands in the north-east Caribbean.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC), in Miami, said on Saturday that Erin – which it described as “catastrophic” – was still not expected to hit land in the US and would swerve away, but forecasters have warned that strong winds and heavy rain could cause flooding and landslides on nearby islands.

16 août 2025 à 16:42

Corrections department review shows how Grant Hardin made fake guard uniform and details lax security at facility

A former police chief and convicted murderer known as “the devil in the Ozarks” spent months planning his escape from an Arkansas prison, and he said lax security in the kitchen where he worked allowed him to gather the supplies he needed, according to an internal review by prison officials released on Friday.

The state corrections department’s critical incident review of Grant Hardin’s 25 May escape from the Calico Rock prison provides the most detailed description so far of his planning – and the issues that allowed him to walk out of the facility.

  • Third T20i: Australia, 173-8, bt SA, 172-7, by two wkts

  • Maxwell’s 62 gets hosts home with one ball to spare

Australia’s Glenn Maxwell produced an unbeaten half-century in a tense chase to help the hosts edge out South Africa by two wickets in the third and final T20 international in Cairns on Saturday. Maxwell’s unbeaten 62 off 36 balls helped Australia chase down 173 with one ball to spare at the Cazalys Stadium, completing a 2-1 series victory in style.

After 18 overs, it was a run-a-ball target for Australia with Maxwell in the middle. The South African bowler Corbin Bosch (three for 26) claimed two wickets and kept Maxwell away from the strike. Needing 10 off the last over from Lungi Ngidi, Maxwell took six from the first four balls before reverse-sweeping for four to seal Australia’s dramatic victory.

Hundreds of titles are being pulled from library and classroom shelves in the Republican-dominated state

A new wave of book bans has hit Florida school districts, with hundreds of titles being pulled from library and classroom shelves as the school year kicks off.

The Republican-dominated state, which has already had the highest rate of book bans nationwide this year, is continuing to censor reading materials in schools, bowing to external pressures in an effort to avoid conflict and government retaliation.

Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa sees red as Newcastle draw blank without Isak

16 août 2025 à 15:43

Newcastle demonstrated how united they are without Alexander Isak but also how much they miss his goals. Despite dominating this match, before and after Ezri Konsa was sent off for Aston Villa, Eddie Howe’s team had to settle for a draw against the side they pipped for a Champions League place on goal difference.

The travelling fans’ chant – saved until after the final whistle – that “There’s only one greedy bastard” may, numerically speaking, be a moot claim in modern football but you got their point.

‘You don’t see many locals at anti-migrant protests’: Kent residents work for community cohesion

People have formed networks of practical support in response to the growing numbers of migrants seeking help

Images of Dover and the beaches along the Kent coastline have come to symbolise small boat crossings in the UK, often attracting anti-migrant protests as a result.

“Everyone’s like, ‘Oh look at Dover, everyone’s coming here’ – they’re really not,” said Charlie Zosseder, the director of the charity Samphire, which works to improve community cohesion between migrants and local people in the town.

Call to ban ‘intolerant’ child-free resorts and hotels in France

16 août 2025 à 14:00

Debate grows as Senator Laurence Rossignol says ‘we can’t organise society by separating children off’

Child-free resorts and adult-only hotels are discriminatory, risk creating a society of intolerance and should be banned, a French senator has said, amid a growing debate in France on whether it is inhumane to exclude children from holidays.

“We can’t organise society by separating children off from ourselves in the same way some establishments don’t take dogs,” said Socialist senator and former French families minister Laurence Rossignol. “Children aren’t troublesome pets.”
