14 juillet 2025 à 05:14

Research papers found carrying hidden white text giving instructions not to highlight negatives as concern grows over use of large language models for peer review

Academics are reportedly hiding prompts in preprint papers for artificial intelligence tools, encouraging them to give positive reviews.

Nikkei reported on 1 July it had reviewed research papers from 14 academic institutions in eight countries, including Japan, South Korea, China, Singapore and two in the United States.

Caught in the contest between China and the west, the Cook Islands asks where its future lies

After the Pacific nation struck deals with Beijing, New Zealand abruptly cut off millions of dollars in critical aid and funding

On a remote stretch of land in the Cook Islands lies a second world war airstrip. Once used as a wartime supply route by American forces, the narrow runway is in dire need of resealing to allow larger tourist jets to land. Leaders on the northern island of Penrhyn have asked New Zealand, Australia and the US to help, but none have come through. Now, they hope China will step in and fund it.

“That is the dream,” says Penrhyn’s executive director, Puna John Vano. “We want to maintain our traditional partners, but if not, we’re going to get assistance from elsewhere.”

On the Cook Islands’ main island of Rarotonga, many people are angry over the damage caused to relations with New Zealand.

Ukrainian intelligence agents killed members of a Russian secret service cell wanted on suspicion of having shot dead a colonel last week, the SBU said.

The SBU intelligence agency said in a statement that the operation had sought the arrest of the agents of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), who it believes were behind the killing of Colonel Ivan Voronych – also a member of the SBU security service – in Kyiv on Thursday.

Australia’s multiculturalism lives mostly on the surface. Inclusion without voice is tokenism | Shadi Khan Saif

14 juillet 2025 à 02:51

Migrants want more than just celebration of their cultures; they want to be part of decision-making

The first thing that hit me when I landed in Melbourne from Kabul wasn’t the city’s famously unpredictable weather but the incredible diversity on the streets and in the food. It was nothing like the Australia I had imagined growing up: a cricket-mad nation led by white politicians in suits, in the headlines occasionally for either good or controversial reasons.

This vibrant reality surprised me in the best way.

The tourists went to stumps on night two at Sabina Park at 99-6 in their second innings, leading West Indies by 181 but with the game firmly in the balance.

Scientists detect biggest ever merger of two massive black holes

14 juillet 2025 à 01:01

Ripples in space-time from collision recorded by gravitational wave detector forces a rethink of how the objects form

Scientists have detected ripples in space-time from the violent collision of two massive black holes that spiralled into one another far beyond the distant edge of the Milky Way.

The black holes, each more than 100 times the mass of the sun, began circling each other long ago and finally slammed together to form an even more massive black hole about 10bn light years from Earth.

Buckingham Palace to host US president during party conferences removing chance of Commons address

King Charles has invited Donald Trump for an unprecedented second state visit in September, scheduling the trip for three days when parliament is not sitting and removing the possibility of the US president addressing parliament.

Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that Trump would come to the UK from 17-19 September, soon after the House of Commons rises for its traditional break for the annual party conferences.

England call the Toone and now look serious contenders at Euro 2025 | Suzanne Wrack

14 juillet 2025 à 00:16

Ella Toone has made a huge impact since returning to the side and her link-up with Bronze and James on the right in the 6-1 win against Wales was electric

The Greek inscription above the door to the stunning Abbey Library of Saint Gall in St Gallen translates as “healing place of the soul”. To the west, heart and soul was the talk of the city overrun with red and white shirts, Wales desperate for their heart, their Welsh spirit, to help them overcome a huge gap in quality and professional development over their neighbours England.

There would be no healing of the soul for Wales, though there is plenty of heart to take from their first major tournament appearance drawn in the toughest of groups. Two goals, including one in St Gallen, set up by the mercurial Jess Fishlock and scored by Hannah Cain against England, were the reward for their labour against Europe’s elite.

Chelsea stun PSG to win Club World Cup after Cole Palmer’s cool double

13 juillet 2025 à 23:17
  • Final: Chelsea 3-0 Paris Saint-Germain

  • Palmer 22 30, João Pedro 43

The boy from Wythenshawe who had sat on top of the Rockefeller on Friday took Chelsea to the top of the world on Sunday, that shiver celebration shown to everyone. It was 90F (32C) in New Jersey, humid too, but oh, this was cold, all right.

Two wonderful, almost identical strikes, executed with an effortless ease, and a lovely soft-shoed assist from Cole Palmer led Chelsea to the expanded Club World Cup. That Tiffany trophy, a great, big gold coin, had their name engraved into it alongside Gianni Infantino’s, the billion-dollar team that won the billion-dollar competition.

Delphine Cascarino’s quick double takes France top and denies Netherlands

13 juillet 2025 à 23:11

Andries Jonker had maintained that “on some days miracles happen” but this was most definitely not one of them.

Admittedly there was a spell when Jonker’s Netherlands teased everyone by threatening France with the prospect of an unlikely elimination but, ultimately, Delphine Cascarino, Marie-Antoinette Katoto and the rest of Laurent Bonadei’s attacking armoury were far too powerful to be eclipsed.

England surge into last eight after Stanway sparks emphatic win against Wales

13 juillet 2025 à 23:06

An increasingly formidable-looking England swept Wales aside to reach the Euro 2025 quarter-finals and send the tournament debutants home without any points, as the Lionesses booked a meeting with Sweden in the last eight.

England finished as the runners‑up in Group D after France’s victory against the Netherlands in Basel, but they will head into the knockout stages with a strong feeling of positivity after notching up six goals in St Gallen, while Wales gave their loyal supporters a moment to savour when Hannah Cain scored a second-half consolation in front of their red wall.

Sinner cried like a little boy who had reached for the sweets but came away with the whole jar | Jonathan Liew

13 juillet 2025 à 23:01

The Italian was overcome with joy after learning harsh lesson from his French Open defeat at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz

As a boy, Jannik Sinner was a champion skier. As he stood on Centre Court match point up against Carlos Alcaraz, perhaps some of the old skills kicked in. Skiing teaches balance, it teaches flexibility and endurance, but most of all it teaches faith. There is a moment in every slide, before friction kicks in, when the body is basically at the mercy of powder and physics. And the greatest skiers learn that this is the moment to hold your nerve. When it feels like you’re falling, keep falling. When it feels like the edge of disaster, keep going.

Three match points against Alcaraz; take two. You’ve lost your last five matches against this guy. He’s the double defending champion. The last time you played, a few short weeks ago, he came back from two sets and three match points down to win. It was one of the most dramatic comebacks ever seen in a grand slam final, and here we are again. Alcaraz saves the first match point. He saves the second. The noise level is rising to a climax. When it feels like you’re falling, keep falling.

Heavy rain in Texas halts rescue efforts as officials warn of further flooding

13 juillet 2025 à 22:37

State authorities believe more than 160 people could still be missing as flash flood warnings remain in Kerr county

More heavy rains in Texas on Sunday paused a weeklong search for victims of catastrophic flooding along the Guadalupe River and led to high-water rescues elsewhere as officials warned that the downpours could again cause waterways to surge.

It was the first time a new round of severe weather had paused the search since the 4 July floods, which killed at least 129 people. Authorities believe more than 160 people may still be missing in Kerr county.

The kindness of strangers: she bought a new sim card for my mum and installed it on her phone

Dad was in hospital in Spain; Mum couldn’t speak Spanish and didn’t know how to contact me, so I reached out to an expat community on Facebook

One week before I was due to fly to Sweden to see my son get married, I got a frantic, jumbled message from Mum. My elderly parents were desperate to attend the big wedding but as they were both in their 80s, they’d decided it would be more comfortable to take a cruise ship from Australia to Europe than to fly. They’d set off two months before the rest of us.

Mum’s message asked me to call her. “We’re being thrown off the ship,” she wrote. “Your father’s in an ambulance – I think it’s pneumonia. We’re somewhere in Spain.”

Chris Gotterup keeps nerve to hold off Rory McIlroy and win Scottish Open

13 juillet 2025 à 21:43
  • World No 158 claims second tour title with North Berwick triumph

  • American also had to battle the clock during the closing stages

East Lothian witnessed a David v Goliath story as Rory McIlroy was denied victory immediately before his return to Northern Ireland for the Open Championship. Chris Gotterup, who arrived at the Scottish Open as the 158th-ranked player in the world, saw off McIlroy for the biggest win of his career.

McIlroy’s thoughts have already turned towards Royal Portrush and the major that has carried even more significance for the 36-year-old since he completed a career grand slam at Augusta National in April.

Ignore the memes, Harry – those splayed stumps speak of Brook’s focus on glory | Barney Ronay

13 juillet 2025 à 21:12

An ugly dismissal against India looked dreadful, but Brook’s bold approach has won England more Tests than it has lost

By strict formal logic any serious defence of Harry Brook’s stump-splaying dismissal 13 minutes before lunch on the fourth day at Lord’s should be showy, ill-timed and based almost entirely on hot air and flimflam.

You could probably also chuck in unapologetic and maddeningly super-cool, peering down from its balcony, guns out, wraparounds in place. Be where your keyboard is. This, mate, this is how we save colour match reporting. It’s just the way I sidebar.

UK ministers urged to pass bill protecting DEI whistleblowers

Legislation would compel employers of more than 250 workers to reveal disability and ethnicity pay gaps

Ministers have been urged to pass legislation that would protect whistleblowers who expose employers who flout forthcoming UK diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) laws.

The equality (race and disability) bill, which the equalities minister Seema Malhotra has described as part of the government’s “absolute” commitment to DEI, is expected to be published this year.
