Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu lights up South Africa’s nine-try rout of Japan

1 novembre 2025 à 19:41
  • South Africa 7-61 Japan

  • Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Arendse score two tries each

A dark, wet evening in Brent is a long way from the sun and sea of Brighton. And, boy, there were not many echoes here of rugby’s greatest upset – quite possibly sport’s – bar the names of the teams and the inimitable fellow sitting in Japan’s coaching box, Eddie Jones. South Africa were 43-point favourites in 2015 and a mere 37 this time, but the reality of lopsided rugby was all too formidably asserted.

Instead it was Wembley that echoed, the lower tier around two-thirds full. South Africa, nine of whose squad play club rugby in Japan, wanted to organise this run-out to bring together their squad from around the world before the big one next weekend against France. As an exercise it worked well enough, the Springboks utterly dominant from start to finish, notching up nine tries in the process.

Iga Swiatek serves warning to rivals by crushing Madison Keys at WTA Finals

1 novembre 2025 à 19:08
  • Pole eases to 6-1, 6-2 opening victory in Saudi Arabia

  • Keys commits 38 unforced errors on return from injury

The second edition of the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia began with the familiar sight of Iga Swiatek brutally laying waste another of the best players in the world. The six-time grand slam champion demolished Madison Keys 6-1, 6-2 in their first match of the group stage.

Swiatek had been struggling in recent tournaments, fatigue seemingly setting in at the end of a draining 10-month season. However, the Pole had three weeks to regroup after her 6-1, 6-2 loss to Jasmine Paolini in the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open. She looked fresh and locked in from the beginning, affirming her status as one of the favourites alongside Aryna Sabalenka, the world No 1, by serving extremely well and putting Keys under relentless pressure off both wings with her weight of shot and defence while offering few mistakes.

JD Vance repeats comments he wants wife Usha to convert to Christianity

1 novembre 2025 à 19:01

US vice-president announces to 10,000 attenders of Turning Point USA that he prefers wife, who is Hindu, to be Christian

JD Vance is doubling down on comments he made about wanting his wife, Usha Vance, to convert to Christianity – remarks that drew political backlash from some quarters.

At an event with Turning Point USA at the University of Mississippi to honor the conservative group’s slain founder Charlie Kirk, an audience member questioned the US vice-president about how he sees the links between American patriotism and Christianity.

Democrats must not cave in to Trump | Bernie Sanders

1 novembre 2025 à 19:00

The government shutdown is not an accident. Trump’s budget would push millions into poverty and must be stopped

Democrats in the US Senate must stand with the working families of our country and in opposition to Donald Trump’s authoritarianism. They must not cave in to the president’s attacks on the working class during this ongoing government shutdown. If they do, the consequences will be catastrophic for our country.

This may be the most consequential moment in American history since the civil war. We have a megalomaniacal president who, consumed by his quest for more and more power, is undermining our constitution and the rule of law. Further, we have an administration that is waging war against the working class of our country and our most vulnerable people.

Amad Diallo rescues Manchester United at Forest despite controversial opener

1 novembre 2025 à 18:31

At the final whistle it felt appropriate to wonder which manager would feel more downbeat. Sean Dyche after being denied a first league win in charge of Nottingham Forest after his side’s weakness at set pieces was again punished? Or Ruben Amorim, who could not celebrate his first anniversary in charge of Manchester United with a victory?

Until Forest scored twice inside 102 seconds at the beginning of the second half, United appeared in control courtesy of a Casemiro header at a corner, controversially awarded after Nicolò Savona was deemed by the officials to have failed to keep a Bruno Fernandes pass in play. In the end a stunning volley by Amad Diallo earned United a deserved point.

Pollock proves the key before England cavalry seal victory over Australia

1 novembre 2025 à 18:23

There will be higher octane games than this one in the coming weeks but for England the primary objective has been safely ticked off. An eighth successive Test victory is in the bag and Steve Borthwick’s team have gone one better than the corresponding fixture last year, when the Wallabies stole the spoils in the dying moments.

While this encounter was not nearly as thrilling, the final scoreline – shining brightly on the big screen in the gathering evening gloom – was what really counted for Borthwick and his players. Defeat by a weakened Wallaby side would have prompted some uncomfortable questions and cast a nagging shadow over the remainder of their November schedule.

Fulham cruise past Wolves to end losing run and turn up heat on Vítor Pereira

1 novembre 2025 à 18:17

The wait goes on and on for Vítor Pereira and Wolves. Not since 26 April – 14 games and 189 days to be precise – have the Portuguese manager and his team tasted victory in the Premier League. That never looked like changing on yet another afternoon this season when nothing seemed to go their way.

From the moment Ryan Sessegnon put Fulham ahead in the ninth minute, there was little prospect of them not going on to end their run of four straight defeats – and even less when Emmanuel Agbadou was sent off at the end of the first half.

Viktor Gyökeres and Declan Rice on target as Arsenal sweep Burnley aside

1 novembre 2025 à 18:02

Arsenal set pieces bring such a degree of organised chaos and unconventional thinking they could be nominated for the Turner Prize. Instead they are just making them favourites for the Premier League crown after extending their lead at the top. The Gunners have reached such a level of expertise, they even scored from a Burnley long throw.

Headers from Viktor Gyökeres and Declan Rice were the difference on a straightforward afternoon in Lancashire for Arsenal. The hosts failed to have a shot on target as Arsenal secured a seventh win in a row without conceding in all competitions, a statistic that will strike fear into the heart of their rivals.

Trump policies loom large over New Jersey’s unpredictable governor’s race

1 novembre 2025 à 18:00

Race between Democrat Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli is drawing attention as preview of 2026 midterms

After last year’s election, when Republicans made significant inroads in the state, New Jersey voters will cast ballots in an off-year, unpredictable gubernatorial race that voters and experts say feels different from any in recent memory.

Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a former navy pilot and federal prosecutor who represents New Jersey’s 11th congressional District, is facing Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a businessman and former state lawmaker, who is making his third bid for governor, this time with Donald Trump’s endorsement.

California is voting on redistricting. An election skeptic runs the process in one county

1 novembre 2025 à 17:00

Clint Curtis is overseeing a 4 November ballot that could add five Democratic seats and reshape US politics

When Clint Curtis was appointed to oversee voting in California’s Shasta county earlier this year, the Florida-based lawyer and election skeptic pledged to “fix” the voting process.

Curtis had never before administered an election and didn’t live in this rural northern California region. But he was well-known to followers of the US election denialism movement, who believe the voting system is not secure and that Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election. Curtis, a former congressional candidate, described himself as an expert in elections law and had long argued that voting machines could be hacked and that the government could manipulate the results of elections.

When does daylight saving time end and how do I adapt?

1 novembre 2025 à 17:00

Experts explain how to reset your body clock and why permanent standard time makes sense

Call me an idealist, but I like to imagine someday my grandchildren will be baffled when I tell them about daylight saving time, and how the clock used to change twice a year. “That’s so wild, Grandma,” they’ll say before switching on their AI neural implants, or whatever other technological horrors will exist by then.

Daylight saving time (DST) was first established in Germany during the first world war as an energy-saving measure – more hours of daylight in the evening meant less coal was needed for fires. Other countries including the UK and the US soon followed suit.

Getting ahead of the change by “gradually shifting bedtime and wake-up time by 15-20 minutes in the days leading up to the clock change”;

Getting exposure to sunlight first thing in the morning “to help reset the biological clock”;

Avoiding “caffeine, alcohol and heavy meals” close to bedtime; and

Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends.

The London consensus is a timely challenge to Trump’s isolationism | Phillip Inman

1 novembre 2025 à 17:00

A debate on how to achieve fairer, greener growth could point the way to a successor for neoliberal capitalism

What replaces neoliberal capitalism is a question at the forefront of Donald Trump’s mind every day.

The US president has never much liked those elements of the Washington consensus that celebrate free markets and liberal trade, as we have come to see in both his presidencies.

Trump’s immigration raids continue through Halloween in Chicago and Los Angeles

1 novembre 2025 à 16:11

In Chicago suburb, protesters confront ICE agents, whom Evanston mayor says ‘assaulted’ residents

Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown continued on Halloween night as federal agents were seen in Chicago and Los Angeles on the holiday, according to multiple reports.

In Chicago, where the president has unleashed military troops to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as agents carry out arrests and push back against protesters, several people were arrested on Friday. ICE agents descended on the city and its suburbs as part of their operations, and protesters were also detained during clashes with law enforcement.

Armed groups of JNIM fighters have blocked key routes used by fuel tankers, disrupting supply lines to the capital Bamako and other regions across Mali.

The al-Qaida-linked jihadist group Jama’at Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) is gradually converging on Mali’s capital, Bamako, with increasing attacks in recent weeks, including on army-backed convoys.
